High chimney stacks and buildings constructed of masonry and timber dominate the area around the canal opposite the main train station of the city - Temple Meads

the slow and meditative style of drawing from a 2 and 3 point perspective starts the design process off slowly and carefully reflecting on the aims of the brief

existing forms materials history and sense of place combine to create the Genus Loci of the built and natural environment using these plaster casts the haptic action of assembling and dispersing these objects creates a feeling of a deeper understanding of the site

grow bristol indoor vertical farming, a pilot project to attract investment into a new form of growing plant based products a forward thinking iniative to address the potential food shortages the city may face in the near future

hands on understanding of the process hydroponic kit from ikea was used to grow parsley from seed, initially using rockwool plugs to sprout the seedlings they are then transferred to larger pots filled with a loose gravel there is no soil the plants are then grown under the blue and red spectrum producing a pink/purple hue, plants do not require white light for photosynthesis

themansard hip roof was influenced by vernacular barn styles in the rural farming area of Harlow the nature of this design maximises light and space in confined size constraints, this roof typology does not immediately mirror the local rooflines of St Philips marsh but is not out of place with the industrial forms of the local area the many chimney stacks compliment the design and express the function of the building the exhibition envisions a future form of living homes are treated as if a subscription to a service enabling the user to live anywhere in the world with the same home personal preferences such as lighting and heating preferences are individualised - he home aims to provide fresh food conveniently and efficiently with indoor growing techniques

the chosen site is built upon the existing Grow Bristol test location

the area benefits from excellent transport links and the encouraging developments and investment contributed by the University of Bristol and local council

the site is exposed to the elements and solar gain, the east, south and west elevations are protected with vertical and horizontal static louvres to diffuse light into the building

windows on the 1st floor of the living / office space open in warm conditions to add extra shade protection and accelerate natural ventilation

We were asked as designers to “respond to the pressing issues society face…In a time of increasing social, political and economic instability...(to) celebrate the unique nature of Bristol and promote its position as a forward thinking sustainable city”

the maps document the development of the site from 1746 to the current day, located in the historic sector of the harbour the site is steeped in history, tourism and conservation any development will have to take the context of the area into careful consideration to conserve the fabric of the local area and enhance the historic value of the site

Bristol resilience categorises these issues into long term stresses (ageing infrastructure, shortage of housing,) and immediate shocks (food shortages, flooding, riots) both of which test the cohesion and fabric of the city

I couldn’t picture a more enduring form than the carriage works in stokes croft, a 4 storey listed facade supported in every possible direction with metres of scaffolding why do we value this architecture and take careful thought and every precaution to ensure its survival, what intrinsic value do these forms have that resonate so deeply with place and people?

“Good architecture is sustainable. It’s built to last. And, if it’s good architecture, future generations will do their best to keep it standing. They may change a building’s use but the architecture will endure.” (Chipperfield)

the city was destroyed over 2000 years ago, excavated and preserved to gain an insight into the workings of an organised and bustling roman city if bristol were to be destroyed in a cataclysmic event will our descendants excavate our city in the same manner, is our contemporary architecture valued enough?

a trip to visit the remnants of an ancient city

in response to this thought the design will aim to create a continuity with tradition whilst not surrendering to nostalgia

flower study on the drawings of Ellsworth Kelly the versions I’ve drawn mimic Kelly’s simplicity and minimalism of the plants

a glued laminated oak super structure that epitomises order and minimalist organisation the building can be opened fully or closed depending on the use, light filters in elegantly through slats in the oak louvres

the fishing hut,NĂ­all McLaughlin Architects wildernesse restaurant, Morris & Co

the wildernesse restaurant is a lesson in the possibilities of clt construction, a 4.5 metre grid is devised with glued laminated timber vaulted ceilings, the building provides an open plan kitchen and due to its frame structure; extensive views of the surrounding area

waterloo city farm by Fielden Fowels maximised a slim strip of unused land to create a learning environment for local schools and charities to grow food and handle animals, the project recycles and reuses all available resources whether water or waste the resilient project will aim to mirror this approach to stress the importance of learning to grow and the provenance of where our food originates from

the guaranty building, Buffalo Louis Sullivan a highly conceptual idea of the frame combined with pre fabricated terracotta panels which are highly decorative and ornamental and is uniquely interesting to the lengths sullivan went to clad an office building on the one hand its an example of the machine age with its high level of repetition and on the other its stylised artwork creates many unique and emotive views to

these

artwork was taken from byzantine motifs and laser cut onto plywood before being painted, with machine technology it is easy to envisage a similar example being used throughout the resilient buildings

resilient Bristol is a multi functional project that encompasses the headquarters for the 100 resilient cities Bristol chapter, a cafe + restaurant, and city farm that teaches local schools and organisations to grow and work with traditional methods whilst highlighting the modern benefits of indoor growing of plants by teaching to grow and learning to cook and experiencing the sharing of a meal with others and the powerful sense of community that can be created by breaking bread this project is for all occupants of the city, and by that it also includes the local flora and fauna which will be carefully taken into consideration to maximise the biodiversity of the site

the form of the cafe follows a 4metre grid the exterior columns give a sense of stability and permanance whilst the interior gives a sense of light and space An active decision was made to make the community space only a single floor, the original design incorporated a second level to increase the seating capacity of the restaurant, this approach came across as counter intuitive as humans were being given an overwhelming majority of the available useable space, this runs counter to the philosophy of the project, in turn the roof is now in the image of wild British shrubland

all buildings are clad in powder coated aluminium panels for the purpose of following the inherent technical design philosophy - adaptive architecture

the colour scheme draws upon the victorian history of the local area, adam caruso in a lecture to the Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels, 17.03.2011 when speaking of the museum of children; notes that the Victorian colour theory valued the use of green and red and contrasting colours as a means of conveying a visual energy from room to room

the highly durable powder coating is a continuation of the sites industrial heritage, the soft metallic finish absorbs and reflects light dependant on the time of day and seasons

joseph beuys 1921-86 “His extensive work is grounded in concepts of humanism, social philosophy and anthroposophy; it culminates in his “extended definition of art” and the idea of social sculpture as a gesamtkunstwerk, for which he claimed a creative, participatory role in shaping society and politics” (Tate) The reddish brown hues used in beuys work give an earthy and grounded appearance, his paintings have an visceral sense of grounding, whilst perhaps not his intent as the brown oil paint was a representation of blood and dirt I believe the paintings can inspire a sense of stability and of the earth in the design

The community hall is the connection between the headquarters and the learning space, the program uses the act of cooking and sharing food to foster a community, I firmly believe that breaking bread is the quickest and easiest way for strangers to form friendships. The food writer and thinker Michael Pollan explains that “The shared meal is no small thing. It is a foundation of family life, the place where our children learn the art of conversation and acquire the habits of civilization: sharing, listening, taking turns, navigating differences, arguing without offending� (Pollan, 2014)

the oysters represent biodiversity and the necessity to protect it, oysters can only grow in clean and unpolluted waters

all produce from this dish is created in the garden and indoor farm, a reflection of the project combined in one bowl, modern ice clarification with simple organic ingredients

broccoli hearts are considered a waste product by many, instead they are vacuum packed and cooked sous-vide in a water bath along with the potatoes for the pomme puree, this dish represents the indoor farm, modern techniques in a less wasteful manner

The underlying structural design strategy is further enhanced by the theories as it is laid on a 4x4m grid system inspired by Cedric Price’s curious cube, it incorporates a CLT frame, steel X bracing and tie bars where necessary. Adaptability is a key component to the pragmatic approach and the modular nature of the design allows an ease of flexibility and resilience, the design is prepared for the unexpected.

At the end of its lifecycle every component can be dismantled and recycled, its original program can be manipulated to a new use, it is more than just sustainable.

Adaptability was advocated by Cedric Price as he believed buildings to be stale and static, his thoughts are still relevant for our issues in dealing with possible future climate change.

with modern passive design systems buildings becoming ever more airtight and more efficient creatures and species that have used nooks and crevices in our structures are struggling to adapt native bat and bird numbers are steadily decreasing in numbers, the project aims to help aid the local bio diversity by incorporating spaces and systems for local flora and fauna to prosper
