I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Hawaii, where I learned and developed important character traits such as respect, humility and dependability. I have always been inspired by nature and how important it is to keep our environment healthy. I’ve played and been involved with team sports all my life and understand how important it is to work well with others.

I desire to find work that can further my experience and love for Design in the fields of environmental studies, Landscape, and Architecture.

A culture center is special place that celebrates the past, present and future. Being that were so close to the mountains, my culture center pays homage to skiing.

With the activity having records dating back to

2500 BC there is plenty of history to look back at but also so many advancements with the use of modern technology. This being said I tried to design a structure and spaces that can represent all areas

of the spectrum. I used five key words throughout the whole process to make sure I kept my designs identity consistent from beginning to end, the words I chose were Open, Sculptural, Inspiring, E x p e r i m e n tal and angular.

My design process started with multiple parti models, looking at different use of shapes, spacing and alignment.

Something I’ve learned this semester is that function can follow form

and creates opportunities for you to challenge and push your creativity and problem solving. Having unusual shapes be the bases for your design can be difficult but can also lead to creating

some really cool and iconic structures. I created my finished model with walnut and basswood, the use of wood gives me the ability to create very detailed elements and

smooth connections with the use of the laser cutter and various sanding grits. These two different tones of wood also allow me create contrast between structure and base.

The benefits of using Rhino 3D modeling software are endless. This office chair is an exact replica of one that I have in my room and sit in everyday. I really enjoy how detailed and accurate the program allows you to get with materiality through V-ray rendering.

Digital Re-Creation Modern Bedroom

Similarly to the previous project, I used RHINO but this time it’s at a slightly larger scale. We were tasked to create a dream room or space.

I researched quite a bit looking for inspiration and ideas and found a lot of cool bedrooms that had a unique modern feel, which is what I was aiming for.

The use of V-ray rendering allowed me to play with exterior back drops as well as interior lighting. This can really impact the feel of a space.

Personal Touch In most projects I like to hint at some of my personal interests, this one being the show Rick and Morty on the television.

Bui l di ng I nfo rm at io n Mo d elin g (BIM) Architecture Design and Documentation While I progress through my college career not only have I learned about computer programs that help me collect data but also those that aid in illustrating three dimensional design. I’ve had a few classes focused around working in revit and I really enjoy the unlimited possibilities of what can be done in the program. Whether its recreating a well know architectural structure or designing something of your own I really enjoy the tools that this program brings to the table.

This project consisted of creating would then hold a few different structure itself could be placed house as a home workspace office to give someone a little 11

a small 10x10 foot studio that custom pieces of furniture. The anywhere from near someones or even outside an existing more privacy while they work.

Custom Furniture I was tasked to create custom pieces of furniture to be placed in a small 10 by 10 foot studio that was also custom made.

Seeing how small the interior space was I decided to open it up with a large garage door and take advantage of the outdoor space with a sitting area. The pieces of furniture I designed was a chair, desk, and picnic table.

Design Intention My goal was to create an area for work while also giving space to hangout and provide amenities to have a few people over for a bit to eat.

Architecturals For my assignment I digitally recreated the Chuckanut Drive Residence, designed

by The Miller Hull Partnership. This house located in Washington, overlooking the breathtaking San Juan Islands. It is built on a secluded cliff side surrounded by Mature Doug fir trees. Some elements that really stuck out to me were the multiple walls that featured floor to ceiling windows. These bring in natural light to the living room, kitchen and master bedroom located upstairs. Another element that got my attention was their timber construction highlighted by exposed joists on both floors.

Details Prior to taking this revit coarse I was in a class called building materials and systems which aimed to teach us about how structures are actually built. After that I was always interested in the actually components of floors, roofs, walls, etc.

Ponderosa Praxis

North Boulder Neighborhood Redevelopment This praxis explored how best to address a local mobile home park called Ponderosa, by studying and designing for the community’s ecological, infrastructure and housing challenges. We looked at the community through three different scales regional, neighborhood, and building in order to fully understand the project.

Ponderosa Neighborhood, North Boulder

Ecological Factors Native plants provide a few amenities to the area they inhabit such as providing habitat for birds squirrels and rabbits which are key components of the foodchain, reducing the heat island effect in urban hardscaped areas, and most importantly for Ponderosa is their ability to soak up excess water in the soil.

Local wildlife may or may not have a direct affect on the Ponderosa neighborhood at this point in time but there are some key factors they could play. Animals are an interest to most kids and with the families present in Ponderosa, knowing what animals are present in and around your community and what purpose they serve is a great learning point. With mostly small critters and herbivores occupying the area their droppings will serve as fertilizer to the areas soils.

Environmental Design Theory and Development My introduction to Environmental design was like a breath of fresh air after switching from architectural engineering.

We were encouraged to explore a multitude of creative mediums as well as research history of different culture and time periods to really familiarize ourselves with the history of design and planning. Also being taught hand drafting before moving to the computer was very valuable. Some of the projects were quite abstract which was something I had very little experience in but turns out to really enjoy.

Light & Air

Shroder House Precedents are involved in almost all my recent work, but this is when I first began to understood their purpose and importance. This project involved a sequence of design investigations that lead to the development of design concepts.

My analysis of the schroder house by Gerrit Rietveld located in Utrecht, Netherlands showed this building really exemplifies De stijl architecture with the inside not having any accumulation of rooms but more of open differentiable zones.

This house showed me in my early time in ENVD that there are many way to design and a multitude of inspiration to pull from.

The Shroder house resides in a small neighborhood of more classically built homes, yet it seems like the lot at the end of the street was meant for it.

Creek Intervention, East Boulder This was my first model, the design is meant to give local businesses and residence connection over the creek as well as a place to hangout. There are also some opportunities to grow vegetables on vertical grow beds staggered along the pathway.

Other things that were took into consideration for this build were axis, rhythm, and datum.

Model Detail Before partaking in the full model we were tasked with building a small section of our intervention at a slightly larger scale. In this class we were fortunate enough to have access to the laser cutter along with a wood working shop which helped a lot with the topography and small modeling pieces.

Te c hnol o g y Art s a nd Med ia D e s i g n Te c h n o l o g i e s : P r o c e s s & To o l k i t While I loved the curriculum in the environmental design program I also wanted to reach out and familiarize myself more with the technical side of things. The Atlas building is located right across the street so I couldn’t resist taking a few classes to get the TAM certificate. It mainly focused on graphic design but also sharped my skills in the adobe suite and exposed me to some basic coding HTML and CSS.

There is a lot of overlap between TAM and ENVD, not just the coarse materials but also the thought process and some of the finish products. For example during a segments of the semester we focused on product design and branding which led to my creating a personal logo that is featured on the cover. The illustrations above and to the right were attempts of blending of text and image.

The Power of Posters TAM classes challenged students to combine creativity with information and/or thought provoking graphics. Everything from the design process I’ve gone over so many times in environmental design to color schemes and composition, you name it and there’s a good chance they covered it in one of the three ATLS classes in the certificate.

The Images on the left are posters I created that are part of three sequential images illustrating how architecture and design can mimic and mirror nature, also known as biomimicry. Due to the natural world being ever evolving there is always so many cool ways different plants and species adapt to thrive in this world.

The first image shows a building sharing some of the characteristics of the Durian fruit such as its spiky exterior.

Secondly and tree like structures providing shade as well as potential solar gain possibilities.

Lastly on the page to the right is a creation of mine that was part of a project addressing current issues in the world that we are passionate about.

As you can see I focused on environmental issues such as deforestation, climate change and endangered species.
