Forest

environmental research and development laboratory purpose Shenzhen has a strong relationship with nature as it has few city centres that are connected by the forest, parks and green belts. Shenzhen is also devoted to an emerging trend in research and innovation industry. The consequence of this is the proposed Environmental Research and Development Lab (with the focus on low carbon generation). Emergence of new digital innovations by providing ground breaking solutions to policy makers partners and customers in order to make an awareness. Rise of green economy and environmental industry. project perception The general perception of the project is to bring the awareness to the people. The question is can we combine those 3 qualities of Shenzhen to create the forest within the city. Taking those 3 qualities and collapsing them together within the building. Taking the forest and allowing it to be a void that allows for those possibilities to exist together with distraction. The building as the public realm with no directional movement and the freedom to go wherever you want to and experiencing different effects. typology The building is situated in the business district of Shenzhen – Futian. It is surrounded by the high raised office buildings, government and residential buildings. The relationship between the building and the ground is visible as the site is sunken with the footprint of the building but the building itself is elevated by the columns. To approach the building one is invited to walk down the ramp. Just like in the forest. The typology is the environmental research and development lab as mentioned before. Labs and other offices are served by the void in the middle.. Open to the public to meander around the building with different mechanisms of the forest. The effects of the mechanisms invite one to go and explore more. Giving the chance for people to meet – make new connections trading, business, government - it creates a tension.

To enter the main laboratories and exhibitions spaces one is driven by the compression of the forest to release to the usual height technical spaces, libraries, exhibition halls, conference rooms, up to roof gardens and coffee shops.

Just like the forest the building has a vertical structure but is organised in horizontal way.. The laboratories and offices are served by the void in the middle. They are organised in 4 different zones starting from the public spaces - just like the layers of the forest.

The amount of growth at this layer varies hugely depending on how much light reaches through the canopy

Shenzhen has a strong relationship with nature as it has few city centres that are connected by forest parks, green belts etc. Having that in mind, the pollution in the city, although in comparison with other Chinese cities is not so bad is still above the average norm. Another quality of the city is that Shenzhen is devoted to research and innovation. This lead me to the typology of the project, which is the Environmental Research and Development Lab. The project’s main focus is the achievement of the forest effect Building Mechanisms: Each effect is created by the following: Initially there are 4 main layers of the forest. The zoning of the project is based on those principles. (left hand side)

Mechanisms: The pixelations are part of the formation of the ‘forest’ inside the building In the forest, the thurther away from the tree trunk the branches grow the thinner they get.

Additionally, the cost of LBL can vary greatly depending on location. For areas with local bamboo forests, the cost benefits are immense.

reflection The main challenege of the project was to create the forest effect within the building without using the actual trees. People feel the freedom in the forest. The filtered lighting on the ground, the follies up the top, the shadows. It creates an atmosphere that people enjoy. The person who implicated outside conditions to the inside by using nature references is Olafur Eliasson. One could argue that he is one of the best artists that is able to bring the awareness of the surrounding to the people inside the building. He brings outside to the inside and succeeds. One of the examples of that is his Weather Project, London. Representations of the sun and sky dominate the expanse of the Turbine Hall. A fine mist permeates the space, as if creeping in from the environment outside. Throughout the day, the mist accumulates into faint, cloud-like formations, before dissipating across the space. A glance overhead, to see where the mist might escape, reveals that the ceiling of the Turbine Hall has disappeared, replaced by a reflection of the space below. It made people engage and be in the moment. This is the target that I was hoping to achieve in my design.

I will continue researching on the atmospheric design with the reference to the nature in the future. It became a very big interest of mine because of this project.

STORY ATRIUM shaping/carving the secondary spaces Meandering through the primitive A space for the spectacle to take space: whilst being viewed from the secondary spaces one can peek through those spaces The eye is drawn to the apex/vertex: point of importance for the experience as it has large amount of light coming through Light is our accomplice is creating a point of interest and relates to privacy and publicity: atrium→ strong/direct light → communal/shared space vs. secondary spaces → filtered/ dimmed light coming through COUNTER-OBJECT AND PROGRAMME The sample is chosen for its linearity/ spiral quality that allows it to navigate through the crevices of the atrium to create points of tension The programme is a pharmaceutical laboratory that hosts various companies competing against each other Within her lowest secondary spaces the most hidden experiments and avant-garde tests are made and kept secret. The highest secondary spaces hold seminars and conferences that are visible through the counter-object: it is here that it provides a framing of these spaces creating another point of distraction within the atrium, where the competing companies can try to gather information on upcoming products SHELL - TATTOO AND CRACK Multiple layering relating to the sky connection Perforation filtering light and creating various degrees of luminosity within the secondary spaces whilst hinting/mapping the location of these spaces making it visible from the outside Anticipates the effect of distraction from the outside, deviating ones attention from the apex The crack traces the loop of the atrium and further emphasised the apex, allowing further light to filter through

GROUND Multiple directionality and layering anticipating the effect of distraction that will take place inside Carved out by the primitive which is sinking in the ground: this grounds the object whilst allowing for more hidden/enclosed spaces below the ground level It provides views of the secondary spaces at different angles and distances and allows the user to get a glimpse of what is happening inside whlst at the same time giving them a sense of enclosure and shelter through the carved and semi-covered walkway booleaned out by the atrium
