YEARBOOK MAGAZINE

Each year there are so many highlights and moments that stands out that we actually find it difficult to identify our favourite! We are thrilled that our students feel the same as well. This year we decided to create a yearbook with all the amazing memories captured in one booklet. It includes all the beautiful stories that photos can tell, don’t you agree?
Throughout the events which our students coordinated we had some strong themes that captured the essence of The Academy and also of this year. Two that stood out were “transition into triumph” and the other “you are your future.” We believe to create opportunities, to equip our students to be job-ready and to ensure that no challenge is too difficult to overcome.
The exciting journey that lies ahead for any student that studied at The Aleit Academy is a special one: The beautiful bonds they form with their peers, the long hours on their feet that makes them fit for the industry, the variety of fields within the industry which they get to experience throughout their internships and workshops as well as the admin skills and professionalism they gain whilst busy with their learner programmes. We focus on creating a sense of belonging as part of our Aleit family and we want to ensure that each student feels like they’re studying for a career as end goal and not just completing a course.
We hope that our mentorship and guidance can transform any student that enters our doors with our motto being: “We create people.”
What is it like to be a first year student at The Aleit Academy?
Some might use the words ‘jam packed’, ‘exciting’, ‘busy’, or even ‘exhausting’. But most of them would say that first year holds numerous opportunities: you grow and learn each and every day, you achieve things you never knew you could, you learn more responsibility and you discover a whole new world filled with possibilities.
First year Students at the Aleit Academy need to complete a total of 350 practical hours throughout their first year which includes setting up events, working as service staff or hostesses and then doing the breakdown as well. They complete these hours through DIENS Hospitality who manages and schedules their hours and events. They worked at amazing events and weddings this year including some of their favourites being the Mining
Indaba, the weddings of both Marciel Hopkins and Danie du Toit from Spoegwolf - two well known names within the South African entertainment industry, the vibrant Adidas Launch as well as a stellar Gucci event at Zeitz Mocaa. At their practical hour sign-off meetings they mentioned that their favourite venues they worked at this year includes Dwarsberg & Bakenhof due to their extremely organised, friendly and welcoming staff and La Roche because of it’s picturesque setting. We love receiving feedback from our students who experienced it all first hand to ensure we improve our course, the overall opportunities and experiences for our prospective students. We strive to implement as well as achieve these improvements effectively in 2023!
The first year students also completed 9 learner programmes from Introduction to Project Management & Events, Travel, Tourism & Hospitality, Health & Safety and Research & Feasibility Studies. This then prepares them for their more managerial learner programmes in 2023 including examples such as Leadership Methodologies and Human Resource Management.
We think one of their favourite things which they have learned and experienced during 2022 is planning, coordinating and executing their own practical event projects such as: ‘The Samaritans Feet Barefoot Gala’ as well as the ‘Helpende Hand Golf Day’. They emailed suppliers, presented their proposals to their clients, drew up budgets, completed the entire set-up for each of these functions and ran the event from start to finish. This provided them with having more confidence in themselves and their abilities and also helped them to learn how to work together in team settings. Both of these events were very successful and raised the necessary funds towards the goals of the involved charity organisations.
Lastly; they also had several social highlights throughout their first year at the Aleit Academy. Their favourites being the Karaoke night and the elementum themed Huisdans hosted at Laurent. They also loved the informal braai’s, picnics and dam days on campus. The first years really became a tightnit group and they enjoy spending time together on-and-off campus! We just adore how they are becoming like a family; just like the family we’ve come to form here at the Aleit group.
We wish them a wonderful, well-deserved break this December holiday and we’re looking forward to seeing them well rested and ready for some fun & exciting new challenges next year!
The life of a sceond year student looks totally different to that of a first year. From day one their focus shifts to becoming ‘job-ready’ and to find their place within the widely expanded hospitality and events industry. They complete internal job shadowing to gain experience within different fields in which The Aleit Group specialise in such as bar and staffing-, venue management, corporate and wedding coordination as well as decor, floral and furniture styling. Along with their job shadowing hours, they also completed wonderful workshops that definitely opened their eyes to even more possibilities within the industry which they can explore.
The rollercoaster of planning and coordinating the annual Huisdans as well as all the relevant fundraising events that went with it was yet another thrilling responsibility that our second years had to take charge of. They did a fantastic job and definitely pulled-off one of the best events ever! Huisdans had an elementum theme where each area represented a different element of nature including fire, water, earth|desert as well as air. They also arranged a very successful karaoke night and a very exciting “it’s a jungle out there”-themed Huisfondsdans.
They have also completed 3 learner programmes that included how to manage people, what type of leader they as individuals are and how important communication is within a business as well as in your professional career. All of these important factors contibute to preparing them for their extremely valuable external internships.
They all individually meet with their Internship Placement coordinator and map their career possibilities and future goals to as a result find the best internship placement for them. This may include fields such as venue management, event, festival, market and wedding coordination, decor, furniture and floral styling, stationery design, hotel management, PR and marketing as well as social media management.
Here are just a few of the companies where our students gained invaluable industry experience:
The final year year of studies. The year that creeps up on you and you actually wish there would be just one more.
Our third year students of 2022 really experienced it all throughout the course of their studies, but their third year was an extremely special one.
The graduates completed their oh-so-important final two learner programmes including financial accounting and project management (also known as their thesis). Now the thesis subject sounds daunting (because it is), but it is a wonderful feeling when you’ve completed all the necessary documentation
required to execute an entire corporate event or wedding. They might have experienced some hurdles along the way but they were all deemed competent! These two learner programmes was accompanied by a very insightful Entrepreneurship and Small Business short course that equips them with the necessary skills to open their own business should they wish.
There was a select group of students who also coordinated their charity event of the year, which was the Jan Kriel Wine Auction. This was the first time in a long whilw that we hosted the event on their campus as well as in their hall. The beautiful and meaningful theme behind the butterfly that goes hand-in-hand with this year’s theme carries numerous symbolistic values, however the one chosen means triumph of the spirit and soul over the physical prison. This year’s Wine Auction embodied the ‘veri peri’ colour scheme which is also the pantone colour of 2022.
We are super proud of our graduates that celebrated their graduation day on the 6th of December 2022. The theme, “you are your future”, was illustrated by using several reflective aspects and the decor represented how their very bright future is now within their own hands. We presented five special awards to students who really stood out in the various fields throughout their three years of studies at the Aleit Academy:
* Top Academic Performance Award: Mia van der Linde
* Creativity Award: Gabriella Lopes
* Advancement Award: Mieke van der Merwe
* Most Promising Event Project Manager Award: Marike Nigrini
* Aleit Academy Award of Excellence: Courtney Lord
