FOREWORD BY

CEO OF ALEA GLOBAL GROUP

Welcome to another edition of The Alea Journal

As we welcome our friends to our family office investment summit in Latam, I am reminded of how influential family offices have been, and continue to be, in shaping that region. And indeed all regions around the world reap the fruitful rewards from their family offices’ presence, history and loyalty to their own national economy This is why we are taking time in this issue to recognise their contributions to the ecosystems in which they grow

We are also looking at Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, and how they are influencing policy on a global scale In line with this particular topic, we are happy to introduce you to two international ambassadors representing the Middle East in the United States, each one an incredibly accomplished businesswoman in her own right.

Turning our attentions to Japan, we consider what it would be like to visit for a trip during the forthcoming World Expo, and how you can shape your stay to make the most of the event

That futuristic event leads us naturally to discussing developments in AI, and we decided to allow both ChatGPT and DeepSeek to battle it out, in their own words, to tell us which is currently the better choice for users

Looking next at fashion and lifestyle, we have examined the choice between real leather and fur and their synthetic counterparts to see which is better both environmentally and ethically, and the nuances of the argument may surprise you

And finally, we look ahead to our next summit in Europe, assessing the investment landscape in the region to highlight opportunities for those who would like to join us there

As ever, you can contact me at info@aleaglobalgroup.com

The Impact of Family Offices on National Economies

Family offices are becoming increasingly influential in shaping national economies worldwide. With their strategic investment decisions, long-term vision, and ability to deploy significant capital across various sectors, family offices contribute to economic stability, job creation, and innovation As their role expands beyond traditional wealth preservation, they are now key players in global finance, influencing industries, markets, and even public policy

Driving Investment and Economic Growth

Family offices act as powerful engines for national economies by investing in a range of assets, from real estate and private equity to venture capital and impact-driven initiatives Unlike institutional investors, which often operate under short-term constraints, family offices have the flexibility to take a patient, long-term approach This allows them to support emerging industries, fund disruptive startups, and provide

capital to underdeveloped regions In countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and the Gulf states family offices have fueled economic diversification by channeling wealth into technology, healthcare, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects

Job Creation and Business Development

As direct investors, family offices support economic expansion by fostering entrepreneurship and small business growth. By investing in startups and early-stage companies, they create employment opportunities and stimulate local economies Many successful enterprises, including technology unicorns, have benefited from the backing of family offices Additionally, by investing in private equity and acquiring businesses, they contribute to job retention and expansion, particularly in industries that require long-term capital stability.

During periods of financial uncertainty, family offices play a crucial role in stabilizing markets Their ability to allocate capital independently of public market volatility allows them to act countercyclically, providing liquidity when other investors may withdraw For example, in economic downturns, family offices often take advantage of distressed assets, invest in undervalued companies, and support recovery efforts through strategic financing Their influence has been particularly evident during financial crises, when their patient capital helps sustain critical sectors such as manufacturing, real estate, and infrastructure

Shaping National and Global Policy

With their vast financial resources and influence, family offices also shape national economic policies Many engage in philanthropy, social impact investing, and public-private partnerships that contribute to education, healthcare, and sustainable development In some regions, they play a role in economic diplomacy by facilitating cross-border investments, fostering international trade relationships, and engaging with policymakers to create investment-friendly regulations

Challenges and Regulatory Considerations

Despite their positive economic contributions, family offices operate with relatively little oversight compared to institutional investors This raises concerns about financial transparency, taxation, and economic influence Governments are increasingly recognizing the need to regulate and incentivize family office investments while ensuring fair economic participation For example, jurisdictions such as Singapore and the UAE have introduced tax benefits and regulatory frameworks to attract family offices, positioning themselves as global financial hubs.

Family offices are more than just private wealth managers; they are dynamic economic actors shaping national and global markets Through investment, job creation, economic stabilization, and policy influence, they contribute significantly to financial ecosystems As their influence continues to grow, governments and financial institutions must strike a balance between encouraging their contributions and ensuring regulatory transparency

Ultimately, family offices represent a powerful force in modern economic development, with the potential to drive innovation, sustainability, and long-term prosperity

In recent years, Saudi Arabia and the broader Gulf region have emerged as dynamic and influential players on the global stage, reshaping international policy through visionary leadership, economic diversification, and strategic diplomacy With their unique blend of economic power geographic significance and ambitious reform agendas, the Gulf states are not just adapting to a changing world they are actively shaping it From energy markets to conflict resolution, and from cultural diplomacy to technological innovation, the Gulf’s growing influence is a testament to its ability to balance tradition with transformation

At the heart of the Gulf’s global influence lies its pivotal role in the energy sector As home to some of the world’s largest oil reserves, Saudi Arabia and its neighbors have long been central to global energy security. In an era marked by geopolitical uncertainty such as the RussiaUkraine conflict and the global energy transition, the Gulf has demonstrated remarkable agility Saudi Arabia’s leadership within OPEC+ has been instrumental in stabilizing oil markets, ensuring energy security, and supporting global economic stability. The kingdom’s recent decisions to adjust oil production levels despite external pressures underscore its commitment to balancing market dynamics with long-term sustainability

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf’s Transformative Influence on Global Policy

This strategic approach not only reinforces the Gulf’s role as a reliable energy partner but also highlights its ability to navigate complex global challenges with confidence and foresight

Beyond energy the Gulf states are redefining their global influence through ambitious economic diversification and innovation Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a bold blueprint for reducing the kingdom s reliance on oil, has captured the world’s attention

Mega-projects like NEOM a $500 billion futuristic city and the Red Sea Development Project are not just feats of engineering but symbols of the Gulf’s commitment to a sustainable and innovative future Similarly, the UAE has positioned itself as a global hub for technology, finance, and renewable energy, hosting landmark events like COP28 and investing heavily in green initiatives These efforts are transforming the Gulf into a magnet for international investment, talent, and collaboration, fostering a new era of economic growth and global partnership

The Gulf’s diplomatic influence is equally noteworthy. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have emerged as key mediators in regional and global conflicts leveraging their relationships to promote peace and stability

More recently, Saudi Arabia has played a crucial role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran demonstrating its ability to bridge divides and foster constructive engagement These efforts reflect the Gulf’s growing reputation as a pragmatic and proactive player in international diplomacy, committed to resolving conflicts and building bridges in a fragmented world.

Cultural and soft power initiatives further amplify the Gulf’s global influence Saudi Arabia’s hosting of major international events, such as the 2034 FIFA World Cup, World Expo 2030 and the Dakar Rally, showcases its ambition to become a global cultural and sporting hub The UAE with its world-class museums innovation hubs and sustainability initiatives, has established itself as a beacon of progress and creativity By hosting events like Expo 2020 Dubai and COP28, the UAE has not only elevated its global profile but also provided a platform for international collaboration on pressing issues like climate change and technological innovation These efforts underscore the Gulf’s commitment to fostering dialogue, creativity, and mutual understanding on a global scale

The Gulf’s strategic partnerships with both traditional and emerging powers further enhance its global influence While maintaining strong ties with Western nations, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have also deepened their relationships with China, India, and other Asian economies China’s Belt and Road Initiative, for

instance, has found a natural partner in the Gulf, with significant investments in infrastructure and technology projects that align with the region’s diversification goals

This balanced approach allows the Gulf to navigate a multipolar world with agility, building bridges between East and West and positioning itself as a key player in the global economy

Looking ahead, the Gulf’s influence on global policy is poised to grow even further Its commitment to economic diversification, sustainability, and innovation positions it as a leader in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges By fostering international collaboration promoting peace and driving technological advancement, the Gulf states are not only securing their own future but also contributing to a more stable, prosperous, and interconnected world

In conclusion Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region are redefining their role in global policy moving from regional powerhouses to global leaders Through visionary leadership, strategic investments, and a commitment to peace and progress, the Gulf is shaping a future that balances tradition with innovation and regional priorities with global responsibilities. As the world continues to evolve the Gulf’s influence will undoubtedly play a central role in shaping the 21st century, offering a model of transformation and resilience for others to follow

Fake vs. Real: The Ethical and Environmental Dilemma of Leather and Fur in Fashion

The fashion industry is at a crossroads, grappling with the ethical and environmental implications of its materials As consumers and businesses alike become more conscious of their choices, the debate between fake and real leather and fur has intensified Both options come with their own set of advantages and challenges from animal welfare concerns to the environmental costs of production and disposal This article explores the key considerations for businesses and consumers navigating this complex landscape

The Case for Fake Leather and Fur

Pros

Animal Welfare:

Fake leather (often made from polyurethane or PVC) and fake fur (typically synthetic fibers like acrylic) eliminate the need for animal slaughter This aligns with the growing demand for cruelty-free fashion, particularly among younger, ethically conscious consumers

Innovation in Materials:

Advances in technology have led to the development of plant-based alternatives, such as Piñatex (made from pineapple fibers) and mushroom leather These materials offer a more sustainable and biodegradable option compared to traditional synthetic alternatives

Lower Immediate Environmental Impact:

Producing fake leather and fur generally requires less land, water and energy than raising livestock for real leather and fur For example producing a kilogram of synthetic leather generates approximately 15-20 kg of CO2, compared to 6070 kg for real leather

Cons

Plastic Pollution:

Most fake leather and fur are petroleum-based contributing to the global plastic crisis These materials are nonbiodegradable and can take hundreds of years to break down, often ending up in landfills or oceans

Toxic Chemicals:

The production of synthetic materials involves harmful chemicals, such as phthalates and dioxins, which can pollute waterways and harm ecosystems. Workers in factories producing these materials may also face health risks

Disposable Fashion:

Fake leather and fur are often associated with fast fashion, which encourages a culture of disposability Cheaply made synthetic items are more likely to be discarded after a few uses, exacerbating waste problems.

The Case for Real Leather and Fur

Pros:

Durability and Longevity:

Real leather and fur are known for their durability often outlasting synthetic alternatives A wellmade leather jacket or fur coat can last decades, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing waste

Biodegradability:

Unlike synthetic materials, real leather and fur are biodegradable At the end of their lifecycle they break down naturally, leaving a smaller environmental footprint compared to plastic-based alternatives

Support for Traditional Industries:

The real leather and fur industries provide livelihoods for millions of people worldwide, particularly in rural and indigenous communities Ethically sourced leather and fur can support sustainable practices and cultural heritage

Cons:

Animal Cruelty Concerns:

The production of real leather and fur often involves inhumane practices including cramped living conditions painful slaughter methods and the use of exotic animals These practices have sparked widespread criticism and calls for bans

Choose Innovative Alternatives: Opt for plantbased materials like Piñatex, mushroom leather, or recycled synthetics, which have a lower environmental impact

Invest in Quality: Avoid fast fashion by purchasing high-quality synthetic items that last longer and reduce waste

Recycle and Repurpose: Support brands that offer recycling programs for synthetic materials or repurpose old items into new products

For those who prefer real leather and fur:

Environmental Impact of Livestock Farming: Raising animals for leather and fur contributes to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. The livestock industry is responsible for approximately 14 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with cattle farming being a major contributor

Chemical Use in Tanning:

The tanning process for real leather involves toxic chemicals, such as chromium, which can pollute water sources and harm workers’ health. While vegetable tanning is a more eco-friendly alternative, it is less commonly used due to higher costs

Ethical and Environmental Trade-Offs

The choice between fake and real leather and fur is not black and white. Both options have significant ethical and environmental trade-offs:

Fake materials avoid animal cruelty but contribute to plastic pollution and chemical waste

Real materials are biodegradable and durable but raise concerns about animal welfare and the environmental impact of livestock farming

Best Practices for Businesses and Consumers

For those who prefer fake leather and fur:

Source Ethically: Look for certifications like the Leather Working Group (LWG) or FurMark which ensure humane and sustainable practices

Support Local Artisans: Purchase from small-scale producers who prioritize animal welfare and traditional, eco-friendly methods

Prioritize Longevity: Invest in timeless, highquality pieces that can be repaired and maintained over time

The Path Forward

The fashion industry must move toward greater transparency and innovation to address the ethical and environmental challenges of both fake and real leather and fur. Businesses can lead the way by:

Investing in sustainable materials and production methods

Educating consumers about the lifecycle of their products

Advocating for stricter regulations on animal welfare and environmental protection

Ultimately, the choice between fake and real materials depends on individual values and priorities By making informed decisions, businesses and consumers can contribute to a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry
