My name is Aldo Pavia, photographer and industrial designer. I studied in Florence, Italy, where I got my diploma as an industrial designer in 2018. I have a deep passion and love for bicycles, I used to be a downhill rider. I arrived 2nd place in the national championships in Chile in 2010. Everything changed when I decided to move to Florence where I worked as a photographer for a vintage bicycle shop for 3 years where I learned almost everything about frames, components, years of production, range of models, framebuilders, Eroica, Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and many other things related to the road bicycles between the years 1960 to 2000. 95% of the time I had the opportunity to work only with Italian bikes and Campagnolo components, the rest was related to Shimano and other products for bicycles. I would like to talk about everything of what I saw during those 3 years working there but I also want you to relax and check out what beautiful bikes I had the opportunity to take photos of. Something funny... This homeless, very intelligent, but sometimes with many personalties, always asked me for money, some of the times I had coins with me and sometimes not, well, those times he
got mad at me. Usually the day after he forgot what he made the day before. Once I forgot my tripod for the camera and he was that sweet and saved for me until the day after.
In these pictures, there’s a difference of two days, he was with the same clothes. In the first one, he’s energic and happy, in this page he felt not so well because the alcohol he got in the morning as a breakfast.
One of my favorite moments and events to see every year is definetly l’Eroica. Amazing landscapes in Tuscany, where people from all over the world come with their own bikes to do the “race” or take a look at how beautiful this event is. Such a fun moment where people can meet each other in the “strade bianche” (white streets) or in the vintage market trying to catch the best pieces or the best prices. Personally I didn’t see this world of vintage bicycles grow from the beginning, I saw part of it when it was already developed but constantly growing and expanding to new countries and cultures, which is something really incredible! This picture is from 2016 where this guy was really exhausted after the whole trip to arrive at Gaiole in Chianti, a town in the Chianti Valley. It’s not simple to arrive to this town, it’s pretty far and not well connected with other cities nearby. That’s why in this shot he’s just relaxing after his long trip to get there in his Scapin with Campagnolo Athena groupset.

This is a special bike given as a gift from Bianchi to the movie producer of the Giro d’Italia Enzo De Pasquale in 1982.

Every time I had to walk around 300 mts. from the shop where I used to work in Florence, to get in Piazza del Carmine Square. My tasks were bring the camera gear, products to clean the tires while I had to shoot and at least 2 bicycles.
That’s me cleaning the tires of my own bike in 2017.

All the pictures were taken in Tuscany, Italy. The portraits of the bicycles in front of the door were taken in Piazza del Carmine, Florence, Italy. The door corrispond to the facade of Chiesa Santa Maria del Carmine church, one of the most important paintworks (affreschi) from Masaccio and Masolino are in the interior of Cappella Brancacci, next to the church.
