part1_visit1 This field study was created in conjunction with Professor Stewart Diemont at SUNY-ESF. During a design charrette in Spain it was found that both parties had a shared interests. These included the development and societal change of traditional viticulture systems as they applied to future growth and potential. However, these topics were approached from two different perspectives, one from the sciences and the other from design. Due to an overlap in schedules and availability, both parties traveled to Northern Portugal in an effort to investigate the potential of this subject.

It started as a very interesting project due to the fact that there was a lack of data on the subject in the region, which is also the reason for initial interest. This purpose of first trip to Portugal was to find out if any of the traditional viticulture systems even still existed. This is the extent to which there was no data on the subject. As a scouting mission, no in-depth data was recorded. Luckily, there were many systems still available and there was an ability to speak with the locals to figure out basic questions and actions for next steps.

The following map shows the routes that were taken during the trip and locations that were of interest to research.

part2_visit2 Due to traditional systems being found during the first visit, there was enough merit to continue the project. As Professor Diemont had already returned back to the United States for the school semester, this was a lone trip.

The purpose of this trip was to go back to locations that contained the traditional viticulture systems and document them in more depth. This data would then provide an overview of both traditional and modern systems in Northern Portugal.
