Fundamentals Of The Faith Pnematology–The Person And W ork Of The Holy Spirit–Conclusion Raymond Pruitt Ill. The M eaning of Pentecost Being the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit had been active from eternity as the Person proceeding from the Father and the Son in applying what had been initiated by the Father and effected by the Son. But He was to be related in a much more intimate and infused sense with the children of God following the finished work of Christ in providing redemption from sin. Pentecost was the fulfillment of the promise of God that the Holy Spirit would come to abide in the hearts and lives of God's people.

Before Jesus ascended, He promised the disciples, "Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence" (Acts 1:5).

Pentecost was the fulfillment of the promise of both the Father and the Son. Just as the birth of Jesus was the advent of the Second Person of the Trinity, Pentecost was the advent of the Third Person of the Trinity. W hy Pentecost was absolutely necessary to the divine plan of redemption will come into focus if we look at it from three perspectives: its doctrinal necessity, its historical necessity, and its personal necessity.

1. Its doctrinal necessity. Pentecost was essential to the completion of the work of God in redemption. In the covenant of redemption made between the Persons of the Trinity before the foundation of the world, each Person had a unique responsibility in the work of redemption. God the Father planned, foreordained, predestined and elected events. In His infinite wisdom, He was elected to determine certain events and to permit others. He foreknew that He would create man and that he would fall into sin, but He determined that salvation would be provided for those who would accept it. God the Father, then, is the originator of the plan of redemption. God the Son is the executor of it. By His incarnation, He took on human flesh and a perfect human nature so that He might obey the perfect law of God, and, as the perfect Sacrifice, He bore the penalty for man's sin and made atonement for it in His death on the cross. God the Holy Spirit is the applier of the work of redemption. It is His work to bring men to Christ, and to bring Christ to men by regenerating and. sanctifying them, and by making real to them the redemption which Christ provided.

The Scriptures are clear that the covenant of redemption was made between the persons of the Trinity in the eternal determinate counsel of God before the creation of the world (see Matt. 13:35; 25:34; John 17:24; Eph. 1:4-12; 3:11; 2 Tim. 1:9, 10; 1 Pet. 1:19-21; Rev. 13:8).

W hen Christ completed His work for our salvation by His death, resurrection, and ascension, it was perfect and complete. There is nothing that can be added that He did not do for our redemption. He paid it all! But it is necessary that the Holy Spirit apply His finished work of redemption, or we could never be saved. It is the Holy Spirit which is the expression of God's personal presence in the life of the believer (cf. 1 Cor. 6:19, 20), and it is through Him that we are brought to God through Christ. It is in His fullness that we experience the presence and the power of God in our lives. But it was essential that Christ finish His work of providing redemption, before the Holy Spirit could be given to apply that finished work and to dwell in a people made holy by the application of the precious blood.

2. Its historical necessity. Pentecost was necessary to give substance to the advent of the Third Person of the Trinity. The historical event, witnessed by multitudes, and experienced by the one hundred and twenty, provided a factual foundation which would mark His coming in a very definite way. Just as the incarnation of Christ, His death, and resurrection, were historical events which occurred at specific times, so the coming of the Holy Spirit was a historical event. It cannot be denied that God brought about an eventful manifestation of His eternal purpose when He sent the Holy Ghost to dwell in the lives of His people, as He had never done before in the history of mankind.

It was proof that He desires to dwell personally in our lives, and that He wants to commune with us in a direct and intimate way. If we are weak and powerless in our personal lives, or if the Church is anemic and ineffective, there is no excuse for it; the Holy Ghost has come to provide all the power and sufficiency we will ever need, and this is a fact of history, and a present reality.

3. Its personal necessity. Pentecost is essential as a guarantee of God's blessings to each of us individually. W ithout Him, the good things of God would still be behind the veil and out of our reach. But with His coming, He makes available to us the treasures of God's goodness (cf. Luke 11:13 with Matt. 7:11). Power is a gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:8; 2 Tim. 1:7); so are the qualities of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Gal. 5:22, 23); and the charismatic gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, interpretation of tongues, etc. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ" (Eph. 1:3).In the light of who the Holy Ghost is, and what He has come to do for us and in us, it is of paramount importance that we be filled with His fullness, If you are not filled with the Spirit, you can be; indeed, you should be, for it is a command that you "be filled with the Spirit" (Eph. 5:18), and that you "walk in the Spirit" (Gal. 5:16, 25, etc.).

Conclusion: In this chapter we have seen that the Holy Spirit is not merely a divine influence, power, manifestation, or an agent, but He is very God, the Third Person of the Godhead. He is pure spirit, having no need for anything material in His being. He has personality and all the attributes of Deity. It is His special work to bring God's purpose to completion by acting immediately upon and in the creature, and this work is expressed in the creation, in nature in general, in mankind in general, and particularly in believers in which He makes real the finished work of Christ on Calvary. He regenerates, sanctifies, and baptizes with His fullness. The baptism of the Spirit is an enduement of power for victorious living and service, and is imperative for all believers who would be effective in service, and who would glorify Christ as He should be glorified. We are in the world to glorify Him, but only the Holy Ghost is able to glorify Him in truth; therefore, we must be filled with the Spirit (cf. 1 Cor. 6:19, 20).

Aliceville: We had a wonderful Mother’s Day with 20 in attendance. The men cooked steaks, baked potatoes and salad, with dessert.

Wonderful service with all the mothers receiving a gift. What a blessed day.

Browntown: In April, we had an Easter Egg Hunt Party; Easter service and children’s skit/song and couples meeting to eat at Western Sizzling.

May we had Family Day Service and lunch, Mother’s Day Brunch, Senior Fish Fry, Couples’ Luau and Fish Fry fund-raiser. June we had a Family Day Service and lunch, Senior night out at Western Sizzlin, Couples Cookout at Pastor’s home, Father’s Day Breakfast and baby dedication.

Carbon Hill: We had a revival with Evangelist Kenneth Wiggins.

Chickasaw: We had a wonderful Mother’s Day program prepared by our pastor’s wife, Vicki Pigorsch. There were several students graduating from high school this year, and we celebrated with them after church with finger foods and cake. Great fellowship.

Collinsville-Harvest Center: I cannot begin to describe the effect camp has had on the young people that attended from HCC. Our service yesterday was charged with anticipation and we were not disappointed. Four of our teens experienced Spirit Baptism at camp.

They also experience deliverance for besetting sin and a freedom to express themselves in worship and testify publicly. All were grateful for the care they received at camp. I am also grateful for how our youth pastors who worked the camp were treated and recognized for their gifts.

Fayette-North Pointe: North Pointe recognized and awarded certificates to over 40 youth for their

accomplishments this school year.

Miss Sara Beth Holliman, age 8, gave her life to the Lord while practicing her song to sing at church one Sunday morning. When she sang the song at church that day, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Praise God for His Spirit and presence. We had 2 youth that came back from camp all fired up for the Lord yesterday and we are sending 3 more today. These two were in the altar today praising the Lord and praying for others. One young man had his mom, grandmother, and great grandmother all in the altar....4 generations weeping and filled with the Holy Ghost. Thank you Jesus! This is why we have always tried to make a way for our youth to go to camp...we are sowing seeds into the harvest of the Lord and seeing the fruit of the labor.

Nothing is done in vain when you give unto the Lord. We are looking forward to the next wave of the Holy Ghost!

Somebody catch the wave! So many in the altar today and the power was overwhelming. Glory to God...praying you all get the blessing because it’s overflowing.

Gadsden-Living Waters: We are praising God for His love and power we are experiencing here at Gadsden.

People in the community are finding hope through Christ and the love of the local church. We are very proud of one of our youth, Ashley Smith graduated

this month from Gaston High School with honors and one year of college work completed.

Greenpond: Lord, you are to be praised. We are rejoicing, seven souls have been saved this month, seven have been baptized. God’s presence has been manifested in a wonderful way. We had forty-five mothers honored on Mother’s Day. A gift was presented to the oldest mother, youngest mother and the mother with the most children present. A six generation family was honored. A Mother-Daughter Luncheon was enjoyed with one hundred in attendance.

The Pride and Joy Learning Center celebrated the K4 graduation. The children were skilled in Bible verses and flag pledges. It was an honor to see how equipped they were to enter kindergarten. To God all glory is given.

Haleyville-Pathway: June is camp month and our kids are so excited. We have kids going to each camp and we are looking and waiting for word to hear about their experiences. We pray God will fill all with the Holy Spirit.

Hartselle: This month we celebrated the graduation of 3 members. We also held a church wide cook out and baptized 3 people, 2 of which were for the first time.

Hazel Green: The first Sunday, we celebrated our annual homecoming with our State Overseer, Bishop L. V. Jones as our guest speaker. What a wonderful message he delivered. After the morning service, we enjoyed a great lunch the ladies prepared.

The afternoon service, the Singing Ambassadors were our guest singers and we were greatly blessed by the Lord. Some of the men did Bar-b-que Boston Butts to raise money for

sending kids to camp. We sold 108. A Celebration for Mother’s Day with a special program honored all of our mothers.

Our pastor’s wife was honored with flowers and a special song by her sons. Thank the Lord for all He is doing in our lives and at Hazel Green.

Jasper-Airport Road: The Spirit of the Lord is present with us in a great way in our services. We enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day program directed by Sister Sheila Piper. Gifts were given to each mother and a sweet spirit was felt by all. We are happy and blessed to announce we are experiencing growth with new visitors coming to worship with us. God is good and to God be the glory.

Leesburg: “Showers of Blessings” was the theme for our annual Ladies Day Breakfast with guest speaker Pamela Martin from Cottondale Church. We enjoyed breakfast prepared and served by the men. We worshiped in song, enjoyed time in the Word with Sister Pam, had a fun-time skit and door prizes. The Youth Ministries had a celebration party for all the graduates.

We had two new members, Timothy Hamilton and Perry Hooper, to join the church.

Short Creek: What a mighty God we serve! This has been a busy month with memorials and decorations. Sister Judy Pate, our Women’s Ministry Director, honored all the mothers on Mother’s Day with a special gift. She presented Sister Green, our pastor’s wife, with a check for $100.00 in appreciation for all that she does for the church.

We celebrated Memorial Weekend with a special service honoring those who have given their lives for our freedom. We also had a ‘dinner’ with money going for missions. The month ended with a 5th Sunday singing and dinner.

Tarrant: WOW....what a glorious and busy month.....We honored our youth/kids for their academic achievements...We participated in the Tarrant Baccalaureate Service and the

3rd Annual Mayor Prayer Luncheon.

We were blessed to have Ken Donaldson from the Cottondale church to come and speak for us on a Sunday night. We honored all our mothers on Mother’s Day and ended the month with a 5th Sunday Singing and Dinner.

To God be the Glory for everything.

Trinity: Since the message “Fresh Oil”, people have been rejoicing in the presence of the Lord and receiving this fresh oil from Heaven.

Winfield City Family: Women’s Ministries has begun at Winfield with Sister Kim Godsey leading the group.

We thank God for laborers to His Harvest. We are believing God for miracles and salvations. Praise God for all His marvelous works! We had a “fun” day of fellowship and a bar-b-que cookoff May 31st with karoke singing outside.

Tips For Abundant Life Carolyn Guyton

is that we Love Him with all our heart, soul and mind, and that next we are to Love our neighbor as ourselves. If we obey His commandments, the world will see and know we are His by our Love. Is the Love your coworkers and family see in you patient and kind? Does it entertain angels unaware?

Joy. A person reflecting Joy in this day and time is pretty obvious. W hen most people are carrying difficulties and stress around with them that keeps them weighed down, the person who walks around with a big smile gets noticed! The W ord tells us that the Joy of the Lord is our strength and I believe that both the Joy and the strength shine through. Is the Joy of the Lord the primary emotion you walk in?

Peace. This is one of the most longed-for states today. W ith so much unrest in our world, this beautiful place is incredible!

It’s when we make our petitions known to God with thanksgiving, rather than worrying over them, and stand firmly on His promises, that this peace is revealed through us. Does your life reflect the peace that passes all understanding – the only true peace?

Be Fruitful. W hat better abundance can we strive for than bearing beautiful fruit of the Spirit! I enjoy fresh fruit this time of year, especially when it is beautiful and at its best ripeness. Galatians 5:22 tells us that the first three of the fruit of the Spirit are Love, Joy and Peace. How do we ensure that the fruit we bear is attractive to those around us and will entice them to live a fruitful life themselves?
