Sanctification–Terminology, Definitions, and History Fundamentals Of The Faith– Raymond M. Pruitt Part I of First Lesson on Sanctification

In the study of the doctrine of sanctification, we approach one of the most important, and least understood, doctrines of the Bible. While all evangelicals agree that it is necessary to be sanctified, there are many conflicting interpretations as to what it means to be sanctified, and how and when it is accomplished. It is our intention to show how the Scriptures teach that sanctification is a second, instantaneous and definite work of grace, subsequent to regeneration, which is accomplished in the justified believer by the Holy Ghost through the blood of Christ."

I. The Meaning of Sanctification I. New Testament words. The words "sanctify", "saint", "holy", "hallowed", and all other related English terms, are derived from the Greek root hagios, which literally means "holy"." When used substantively with the article hoi hagioi it is usually translated "the holy ones", or "the saints"." The verb hagiadzo occurs twenty-eight times in the New Testament and has three basic meanings: (1) to make holy or to purify (Eph. 5:26; 1 Thess. 5:23; Heb. 2:11; 9:13, 14; 13:12; Rom. 15:16; 1 Cor. 6:11) (2) to consecrate, or to separate from ungodliness and to dedicate to God (Matt.

23:1?, 19; John 10:36; 17:19; 2 Tim. 2:21); (3) to venerate, or to hallow (Matt. 6:9; Luke 11:2; 1 Pet. 3:15). The adjective hagios occurs 235 times and has the same three-fold meaning as the verb. The noun which indicates "sanctification" is hagiasmos and occurs ten times in the Greek New Testament (Rom. 6:19, 22; 1 Cor. 1:30; 1 Thess.

4:3, 4, 7; 2 Thess. 2:13). The word for "holiness" is hagiosunee and is found only in Romans 1:4; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Thessalonians 3:13 in the Greek New Testament. Hagiotes means "sanctify" (in a moral sense) and is found only in Hebrews 12:10. The adjective hosios meaning "pure, holy, pious", occurs eight times; the adverb hasios, once (1 Thess.

2:10), and the noun hosiotes, twice (Luke 1:75; Eph. 4:24). The adjective hieros which means "sacred, pertaining to God", twice (1 Cor. 9:13; 2 Tim. 3:15)."

We have accounted for all the words in the Greek New Testament pertaining to sanctification and holiness.

Hebrew words in the Old Testament correspond to these in general, and offer no meanings which are very different. From a study of these words, it can be said that sanctification has to do with the purification of the whole nature of the individual, a separation from the sin nature and a dedication to God, an appropriation of Christ as our holiness, and a conformation to His image (Rom. 8:29). Instantaneous sanctification is implied in the use of the aorist tense in a large number of New Testament passages.

2. Examples of instantaneous sanctification from the aorist tense. Olive M. Winchester and Ross E. Price, have made an extensive study "of the evidence for the definite, miraculous experiences of regeneration and sanctification as found in the Greek New Testament, especially in the figures emphasized and in the use of the aorist tense." We give here some of the examples from their book which implies sanctification as an instantaneous and definite act, as opposed to a gradual process: "That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which corrupt according to the deceitful lusts" (Eph. 4:22). "And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor. . ." (Eph. 4:24, 25). "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth.....(Col. 3:5). "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice.....(Rom. 12:1). "Awake to righteousness.....(1 Cor. 15:34). "Purge out therefore the old leaven. (1 Cor. 5:7). ". . . Our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin" (Rom. 6:6). "They that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts" (Gal. 5:24). "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17). "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God" (1 Cor. 6:11). "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly" (1 Thess. 5:23). "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate" (Heb. 13:12). "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" (2 Cor. 7:1). On this Steele comments: W hile the . . . doctrine of instantaneous sanctification is taught by the aorist tense in this verse, the seemingly paradoxical W esleyan doctrine of progressive sanctification is also taught by the present participle, "perfecting" holiness, etc. . . . The perfect inward cleansing instantaneously wrought by the Holy Spirit through faith is to be constantly and progressively carried outward into all the acts of daily life, as the moral discrimination becomes more

and more acute with the increase of knowledge."

II. Various Definitions and Distinctions of Sanctification 1. A summary of Wesleyan views of the doctrine. John L. Peters has summarized Wesleyan views on sanctification which developed during the last three decades of the nineteenth century into two major groups: (1) those who contended that man's holiness, as affected by the grace of God, is accomplished in regeneration; and (2) those who held that it was accomplished by a further infusion of grace subsequent to regeneration. He lists two subgroups under Group 1, and three subgroups under Group 2. This schematization will help us in understanding the way the doctrine has been interpreted with the Wesleyan tradition, in which our roots are deeply imbedded. a. Those who contend that sanctification is accomplished in regeneration.

1. Complete deliverance from all sin is accomplished in regeneration, the "residue theory" being denied (J.M. Boland, J. O. A. Clark, John E. Edwards, A. J. Endsley, Samuel Franklin, D. W. C. Huntington, George H. Hayes).

2. Complete deliverance from inbred sin is never accomplished in this life; and, therefore, regeneration does all that may ever be done in this sense (D. D. Weldon, J. C. Granbery). b. Those who contend that sanctification is distinct from regeneration.

1. A complete purification is instantaneously accomplished in the crisis of entire sanctification (John R. Brooks, Randolph S. Foster, Jesse T. Peck, Thomas N. Ralston, Leonidas Rosser, Daniel Steele, T. O. Summers, John J. Tigert).

2. A completed purification may be gradually wrought in the process of continuing sanctification (E. E. Ross, John Miley, William V Kelley, William Burt Pope).

3. A progressive purification is wrought through a sanctification combining crises and process (J. Crane, C. W. Rishell, James Mudge)."

During this period, the doctrine of sanctification underwent such controversy within the Methodist Church that not less than ten separate religious bodies were organized around the turn of the century with entire sanctification as their cardinal doctrine, and practically every one of these groups were Methodist in their former church affiliation.

While Methodism was going through the throes of drastic and painful changes, there developed within its ranks separate camps whose theological positions were sometimes incomprehensible to one another. With a remarkable growth in its institutions of higher learning, and the consequent demand for adequately trained professors, many of Methodism's brightest students took their graduate training in the universities of Germany, and returned to train the pastors of Methodism in their universities and seminaries. With them came the thought of Hegel, Schleiermacher, Feuerbach, Comte, Lotze, and Ritschl, which at first questioned and then openly attacked "the startled traditionalism."

Out of the chaotic disturbances which had plagued American Protestantism for forty years, particularly in the Methodist Church, and the consequent splintering of holiness groups, there arose the cry from the faithful for a "new pentecost", and it happened in the early part of the twentieth century. Vinson Synan observes: In historical perspective the pentecostal movement was a child of the holiness movement, which in turn was a child of Methodism. Practically all the early pentecostal leaders were firm advocates of sanctification as a 'second work of grace' and simply added the 'pentecostal baptism' with the evidence of speaking in tongues as a 'third blessing' super-imposed on the other two."째

But it would be a mistake to contend that the doctrine of sanctification as a second definite work of grace is merely a Wesleyan doctrine. John Wesley would be among the first to assert this point. He strongly rejected any suggestion that it was his doctrine. Long before Wesley, early church fathers, such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria had expounded the doctrine at length, and of course, one only needs to read the promises implicit in the Gospels, the statements in Paul's epistles, and John's exhortations, along with the references to it in the epistle to the Hebrews, to see that doctrine of sanctification as a second definite work of grace is a bedrock of New Testament truth.

John Wesley's role reawakens the Christian world to its fundamental significance. As stated in the beginning of this chapter, all evangelicals agree that it is necessary to be sanctified, but what it means, how and when it is accomplished continues to be an area of controversy. Let us continue an examination of other points of view concerning the nature of sanctification.

2. Positional sanctification. Calvinistic and Luthern theologians, along with Plymouth Brethren and the Keswick Movement, generally subscribe to the notion ✓ of positional sanctification. Broadly stated, this view holds that all redeemed souls are saints and are holy even though they are still being sanctified by the work of the Holy Spirit through the Scriptures and will never be completely sanctified until Christ comes again. From the positional perspective, sanctification is the attributing of sanctity to all persons who stand just before God through the merits of the finished work of Christ, which position is attributed to the believer from the moment of his justification.

Our response to this interpretation is that its proponents confuse justification with sanctification. We agree that the justified believer stands objectively righteous before God, since he is clothed in the merits of Christ. As a justified believer, he enjoys the privilege of a right relationship with God, but sanctification goes beyond a changed objective status of imputed righteousness. In sanctification, we are dealing with the eradication of the sin nature (a concept which is denied by practically all advocates of positional sanctification), and the impartation of a holy nature.

3. Initial sanctification. Wesleyans generally distinguish between initial sanctification, which is synonymous with regeneration, and entire sanctification, which is the second definite work of grace. John Wesley believed that sanctification begins simultaneously with justification, but he insisted that entire sanctification itself is a second definite, and instantaneous, work of grace. In response to a question pertaining to when sanctification begins, Wesley said, "In the moment we are justified. The seed of every virtue is then sown in the soul. From that time the believer gradually dies to sin, and grows in grace. Yet sin remains in him yea, the seed of all sin till he is sanctified throughout in spirit, soul, and body."

Our response to this view is that while it is true that justification and regeneration provide the ground for sanctification, to call regeneration "initial sanctification" introduces an unnecessary confusion of terms. Regeneration is the new birth, the impartation of a new life and nature, but the inbred sin nature remains in the same house with the new spiritual nature, warring against it (cf.Gal. 5:16-18), until the old nature is crucified in the second definite work of grace, i.e., sanctification. To speak of initial sanctification and entire sanctification suggests a progressiveness which is foreign to those passages which show sanctification to be an instantaneous crisis experience (see I, 2 above).

Also, the classical Wesleyan insistance on the progressive growth in holiness up to the moment of entire sanctification (which is itself instantaneous), commits its advocates to a time element which is not well supported by Scripture. Indeed, it all but makes it necessary for the person to put a period of time between his regeneration and his sanctification, when in fact there is nothing to prevent a sinner from going through all the stages of repenting, being born again, sanctified, and filled with the Spirit in a few moments. All that is required is that he repent and believe to be born again (cf. Rom. 10:9), and then recognize his need for deliverance from the inbred sin nature (cf. Rom. 8:6, 7; Gal. 5:17), and he can be sanctified wholly. He is then ready to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost as the enduement of power for victorious and effective Christian living and service. On this point, A. J. Tomlinson writes: W hile we hold uncompromisingly to the three definite experiences justification, sanctification, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost evidenced by the speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance yet we do not question God's ability to sweep an honest, humble sinner through these experiences so rapidly that human intelligence may not be able to make any distinction, as if it were all done at once. This has been proven true in not a few instances.

The sinner, having been instructed in the doctrine, went to the altar and began to pray for God to save him. His faith was so fixed on the doctrine that almost like a lightening flash he rushed through the experiences.

Soon he was filled with glory, speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave utterance . . . Let God rush men through as rapidly as their faith will justify Him in doing so, but the doctrine remains the same.

Alex City: KFC (Kid’s For Christ) performed an excellent Mother’s Day program. It was a blessing for all in attendance.

Each mother was presented with a live flower planted in a handpainted ceramic boot.

Each boot was decorated by a member of KFC. This month KFC, also, honored the “Seniors” of the church by preparing a spaghetti supper for them. Many thanks to all their parents for helping out. Justin Peters, a leader of KRC, delivered a short message with help of all the children. They also assisted in two car washes this month. The proceeds from the first one went towards the children’s church and the proceeds from the second went towards the expenses of the local church. God bless our children!

Anniston-Praise & W o r shi p: It wa s a wonderful day at the Praise & Worship Center Mother’s Day Sunday. Carolyn Pierce led an outstanding worship time and presentation honoring the deceased mothers with a legacy in our church and she honored the pastor’s wife, Bobbie Smith, as the Mother of the Church.

“Mother’s Love” was the sermon from 1 Corinthians 13. There was an invitation for unbelievers to receive the greatest gift of all...the love of God through Christ on Calvary.

Several responded as they took someone by the hand and came to the altar asking the Elders (Pastor and Deacons) to pray for them. It began

with a woman who brought her sister for a healing prayer; one woman brought her elderly mother; a young woman brought her two nieces; a middle age woman brought her brother; and a grandmother came to “stand in “ on behalf of her hospitalized grandson.

Following the altar service, Maxine Jenkins led a marvelous presentation, honoring the mothers present from the youngest to the eldest. In addition to the spiritual blessings, the PWC family is thrilled to establish a record attendance of 130.

Several visitors said they would be back. Pray for us as we continue to adjust ourselves to the True North heading.

Browntown: We at Browntown were privileged to have several events this month. There was a Family Day Lunch and Service; Mothers Day Brunch and presentation by the children; a fund-raiser Fish Fry; and Ryan and Jason Hawkins renewed their wedding vows. To God be the Glory!

Carbon Hill: This Sunday morning, the Holy Ghost began to move, seekers

began to flood the altar and the power of God began to fall on them that were hungry and seeking. The greatest blessing of all was when our young people that had been to camp began to respond to the altar call.

Several were slain under the power of God and were lying prostate on their faces.

I gave the young people permission to testify at the end of the service and could not get the microphone back, nearly all of them preached a sermon. It was a glorious time.

Sunday night we preached on Pentecost Sunday and the Holy Ghost moved again.

Chickasaw: Our youth are ready for camp and looking forward for their summer break. Work continues on the dining hall with a new coat of paint. We raised $500 in our yard sale for a new sign. Brenda Blaylock is our new youth Sunday School teacher. She and Cody Parmer recently received their Certified Teaching diploma. Cody has youth service each month. We are so proud of them.

Fayette-North Pointe: We

are excited to welcome our newest addition, Miss Emma Layne Ray. Emma was born May 29th and weighed 7 lb 13 oz. Her parents are Bryan and Khristina Ray and her big sister is Leanna Ray. Bryan plays the bass guitar in the worship band and is also a Trustee. The Ray’s have been members at North Pointe since 2010 and have been a vital part of the ministry here. North Pointe is sponsoring 6 youth this year at Camp Boothe.

The youth department works all year through fund-raisers to sow seeds into the future church.

Gordo: The church at Gordo had the opportunity to open the doors of membership to welcome Brother James Lathem, Sr. We are thankful for him. Brother Lathem is a wonderful and kind man of God! Greenpond: When a woman reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord, she shall be praised. We had an outstanding program as several ladies acted out Women in the Bible. We had 103 present. Forty two mothers were given flowers and a standing ovation. The oldest and youngest mother received a special gift.

A s pe c i a l celebration was given to three high school seniors for their accomplishments.

There were fourteen 4-K children that graduated from our Pride and Joy Learning Center. Memorial Day was observed honoring those that have served in various

branches of service. Thanks to all those and their families that have given so much.

The seniors enjoyed a trip picking strawberries and had lunch at the Peach Park.

Haleyville-Pathway: Praise God for His blessings and the work He is doing in and in our church. To God be the glory for the passion our youth are showing in the praise and worship!

Hartselle: We have recently started a new ministry. We call it “His Will” lawncare.

Our first day is this Saturday June 7th...We are taking care of those who can’t do for themselves.

Here’s the ticker, we are only asking that the family join us in prayer before we leave.

Showing the True Love that Christ showed to us. Praise and Honor given to our Lord for this opportunity.

Jasper-Airport Road: We are still experiencing a mighty move of God in our midst.

We praise God because visitors are coming each month and express a desire to be part of our local church.

We enjoyed a surprise birthday party for our pastor with several in attendance. We appreciate the wonderful people at Airport Road.

God is hearing and answering prayer.

Leesburg: “Queen for the Day” was the theme for our annual Ladies Day Breakfast.

The ladies enjoyed breakfast prepared by the men who did an excellent job!

After breakfast and game and door prizes, the ladies fellowshipped in worship and the Word with a special guest speaker. On Mothers’ Day, all mothers were presented

gift bags from Bath and Body. On a Wednesday night, there were 3 young men who gave their lives to the Lord during the youth Bible study. Two wanted to be baptized right away, so Pastor Tim baptized them down the road from the church in the river.

Lincoln: Brother James Oliver retired from pastoring May 28th because of health issues.

Please pray for them.

Short Creek: Our parsonage has been roofed, the heating and air conditioning unit at church has been replaced and the parking lot at the church prepared for paving. We had a yard sale for Children’s Ministry to help our children go to camp this summer.

We also sold donuts to help the youth.

We had several people to sponsor our children and we are so excited that 13 are attending camps. Besides all the work going on, Pastor Green had a heart attack—giving God the chance to perform a miracle of healing. He had bypass surgery about 29 years ago which was only supposed to be good for 10 years. His lasted 19 years past that.

The artery that was replaced collapsed causing his heart attack. Meanwhile, his heart made its own bypass and formed a new artery to carry the blood flow. Praise the Lord!

He was in the hospital only 4 days. He is home and doing well. Sister Green is preaching the Word while Brother Green is regaining his strength.

Please remember him in your prayers.

Tarrant: The highlight of

the month was receiving 4 new members into the church. Shirley Walker, Jeff Corbin, David Roseberry and Deborah Reese.

Another chapter closed in the lives of our youth as we honored our students for their dedication in their education. Alissa Coufal was our graduate for 2014.

Mother’s Day we paid tribute to our mothers by giving each mother an angel pin. Our hearts were broken as we paid our last respect to James Benefield. Brother James was faithful in his attendance at Tarrant and everyone loved him dearly.

He will be missed. Continue to pray for us.

I was blessed to be a cabin leader at Collegiate Camp this year. Little did I know when I accepted that opportunity that I would be changed forever! W e experienced a place in God that was new to many of us. I want to continue to live in the Spirit and follow Him into the abundance He offers. W e may begin by wading slowly, but if we continue we reach the place where we are no longer walking on our own, but relying completely on Him. Instead of keeping your mind cluttered with the many tasks you must accomplish, keep a pad and paper, or phone, with you and jot down those responsibilities. Any amount of time can make a difference, because prayer makes a difference.
