Congratulations, celebrations and communications Welcome to the Club Awards 2018 winners issue where those of you who couldn’t join us, or watch our live-streaming, can experience it in its paper form. From football clubs to rugby clubs and social clubs to community clubs, the breadth and extent of the UK’s clubland was showcased in style at the glittering evening. The clubs which came together under that one roof on that one night represented the best of the best and rightly take their place in Club Mirror’s Hall of Fame.

The community focus of clubs as always shone through. Whether that’s encouraging youngsters onto the pitches or planning activities for elderly members, the role of clubs as a hub is as clear as ever. We’ll be throwing a spotlight on this theme throughout the year.

As always entertainment remains a key factor in bringing in members and sport continues to provide a unifying bond with big screen action pulling in the crowds. (With this in mind, be sure to check out sister title Sports4Bars.com which will be bringing you listings for the best of the action during 2019.)

Business initiatives were also high in the pecking order with the ingenuity of clubs being praised by the judges. Charity remained a priority (our joint winners raised well over £100k between them during the year) and the dedication of Managers, Stewards and Committees was recognised and applauded. In short, much to celebrate. But it didn’t end there! Club officials really enjoy the chance to meet and network and this was highly evident at Club Mirror’s raceday (the day after the Awards) when over 500 people used their free tickets to extend the celebrations Still on the topic of celebrations, if you haven’t entered the 2019 Hospitality Social Media Awards then now’s the time. As evidenced at the Club Awards, the role of social media in engaging with members continues apace. With categories to suit every outlet – and the only truly pan industry Awards in the UK – now is the time to show how social media is helping to grow the club’s following. Major sport investment The England and Wales Cricket Board is one of 10 national governing bodies (NGBs) which have been given more support to help people keep or develop their sporting habit. More than £16 million will be spent on the 10 sports over the next two years to help work towards an Active Nation.

Dry January a wet squib?

Could ‘Dry January’ be the “perfect decoy” for problem drinkers? The answer is yes, according to Dr Mark Wright, a consultant in liver medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

“Giving up alcohol for a dry January as some sort of detox is like maxing out your credit cards all year and thinking you can solve your financial problems by living like a hermit for a month,” he said. "It just isn't going to make things better if you then go back to your usual habits in February.

“Many who die from alcohol-related causes would not have considered themselves to have had a drink problem, just that they drank too much on a regular basis.

“The danger is that abstaining for a month can make it seem like people have a grip on their levels of drinking but, in fact, it can be the perfect decoy to justify drinking far too

much in the festive season with increased intake for the rest of the year – it is not a fix all solution.

“What people need to do is be aware of their consumption all year round, aiming to stick at about 14 units per week with three to four dry days.”

The Dry January initiative was launched by Alcohol Concern in 2013, urging people to abstain from alcohol for a month following the festive period.

A study amongst 2,000 UK residents who went for a Dry January last year found that participants continued to drink less eight months later. The average number of days drinking each week before the challenge was 4.3. Seven months later, participants reported that this had dropped to 3.3 days. The average units of alcohol people drank dropped too, from 8.6 to 7.1.

Fuller’s is selling its brewing operation to Japanese brewer Asahi for £250 million.

The illustrious West London-based brewer is selling the production and distribution of all its beers including flagship ale London Pride. The deal includes the historic Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, where the company was founded in 1845, as well as well as its Cornish Orchards, Dark Star Brewing, and Nectar Imports businesses.

Chief Executive Simon Emeny said: “We remain incredibly proud of the Fuller’s Beer Business, its history and the high quality premium beer and cider portfolio that we have developed.

“Brewing has formed an integral part of our history and brand identity, however the core of Fuller’s and the driver of our future growth is now our premium pubs and hotels business.”

Although Fuller’s will retain ultimate ownership of its brand name, Asahi will hold the global licence to use the trademark.

Club Awards winners revealed The 2018 Club Mirror Awards took place at the end of last year and celebrated the very best in clubs in front of an audience of over 600, representing the UK’s top clubs from sports clubs and social clubs to political clubs and working men’s clubs.

“In celebration of Club Mirror’s 50th birthday, we live streamed the Awards for the very first time, with nearly a thousand people tuning in to watch the event unfold,” said Club Mirror’s Karen Foreman. “We also witnessed around six thousand hits on Facebook.”

Re: Motion Picture Licencing Compan y (MPLC) – Demand letters & Applica tions for Licences

Over recent weeks we have received enqu iries from many clubs for advice regardin g correspondence received from the above. We have also received written feed back from MPLC itself having forwarde d complaints on clubs’ behalf regarding threatened fines and incorrec t information received in relation to Spo rts channels.

The position regarding the requirement for a licence has recently been clarified in writing by MPLC in the following terms: The amendment to Section 72 [Copyri ght, Designs and Patents Act 1988] does not only cover ‘film’, but instead it covers any creative work, which will incl ude not only films, but also television shows.

It has been made clear that a licence is not required for unedited sports coverage or any other TV broadcast which does not contain ‘creative work’. This would arguably include (but isn’t necessarily restricted to) the following: • Sports coverage • News • Weather • Live events (such as the recent marriag e of Harry & Meghan etc)

We have informed MPLC that the maj ority of clubs with television will use them solely to show sport. They have advised on the following terms: It is doubtful that clubs actually know what is being broadcast, and whether films or other creative work are included in the broadcast. Such works frequently come on air, and unless ther e is someone actively monitoring the content that is being broadcast, you cannot be certain that unlicensed wor ks are not being broadcast and that our studio partners’ rights are therefor e being infringed.

In the circumstances our advice to CIU Affiliated Club’s is that providing club s restrict their coverage to sports, news and other events as listed above, they shou ld not need a licence from MPLC or any other similar body.

Please note that this in no way affects the need for additional licences requ ired to show free-to-air broadcasts in relation to music content by the colle ctive licences provided by PRS and PPL .

Please keep me updated if you receive any further direct contact which contrasts with this advice or if your club receives a complaint or a fine for alleged copyrigh t infringement.

CAMRA CLUB OF THE YEAR

Four clubs contend for national title The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Club of the Year competition 2019, run in conjunction with Club Mirror, has announced the top four Real Ale clubs in the country.

T

he CAMRA Club of the Year competition has the simple aim of finding the clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale. The winning club needs to offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition.

Clubs are nominated by CAMRA branches across the country and judged by a panel of CAMRA volunteers throughout the year. Regional Finalists are then invited to Club Mirror’s November Club Awards to discover which four clubs go through as Super Round Winners. These four clubs are then judged by a final panel of four, including Club Mirror’s Sean Ferris.

Sean said: “This is our eighth year working with CAMRA on this important Award, something we’re very proud of. Presenting the four Super Round Winners with their trophies at the Club Awards is an annual highlight, and being a judge of the final round is a badge of honour. The Club Awards celebrate the best in the business and these clubs are certainly that.”

Egham USC has won the Surrey CAMRA Club of the Year Award every year since 2008.

CAMRA’s Keith Spencer, Club of the Year Coordinator, said: "A club is the ultimate community asset; it is created by the community for the community it serves. This competition is a great way of recognising our clubs and raising awareness about the good work that they do."

The Appleton Thorn Village Hall near Warrington is a former school that has been transformed into a thriving village hall, with an ever-changing range of seven beers from regional and microbreweries. A previous national CAMRA Club of the Year winner, the club holds regular events including live music and a very popular annual beer festival.

A popular and welcoming club, the Canine Club in Accrington is a large street-corner venue on a busy street. The central bar serves a comfortable lounge to

the front and a traditional games room to the rear where snooker, pool and darts are played. The changing beer range usually includes a couple of east Lancashire brews and one from further afield.

Winner of the Surrey CAMRA Club of the Year award every year since 2008, the Egham United Services Club offers five ales on at all times, with three rotating guest ales including a dark, and a wide choice of ciders is available from the cellar. Their three annual beer festivals showcase an eclectic range of ales, mostly from the newest microbreweries around. Comfortably furnished with a sports TV and free WiFi, the club hosts live music most Saturday evenings.

The oldest surviving building in Bargoed is home to the Real Ale Farm. Offering a range of quality beer, which has been selected for flavour and interest, the

Oh what a night!

Club Mirror and Club Rugby readers joined together for a night of rugby razzamatazz at BT Sport’s London studios, forming the audience for a live recording of Rugby Tonight. Couldn’t join us? Here’s how it looked.

ugby-loving readers across the UK are invited to join us at audience takeovers of popular rugby programme Rugby Tonight.

The latest live recording (January 23) featured readers from London, Cambridgeshire and Essex through to teams from the Metropolitan Police and a pub-based rugby club, the Wheatsheaf Cabin Crew RFC. “Despite snow, readers turned up to enjoy the informal drinks reception, photo-opportunities and rugby chat before the main event,” said Club Rugby’s Justin O’Regan. “We then followed instructions from the studio manager and crowded onto the studio floor for the live recording.”

Sarra Elgin was joined by presenters and rugby royalty Ugo Monye and Lawrence Dallaglio, who welcomed Exeter Chief’s Phil Dollman and England Centre Emily Scarratt on set. Hampstead Ladies were on hand to provide the demonstration team for the night, and joined in the Smashometer test.

While many of us will have launched into 2019 with ambitious New Year’s resolutions they’re almost guaranteed to fail, according to the experts.

N

early all of us make the same mistake when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, one that practically guarantees we’ll fail miserably. Sadly, it’s not just New Year’s resolutions that we blow. Anytime we try to change our behaviour, we make the same disastrous mistake.

In the time it takes you to read this, you’ll learn a strategy that you can use to reach any goal or to change any habit. Even the biggest goals, like stopping smoking and getting out of debt, are achievable with this approach.

So, what’s this huge mistake we make when we set goals or try to change a bad habit? We expect to succeed. We have no contingency plan when we fall by the wayside. When we inevitably come up short – the stats are bleak when it comes to sticking with New Year’s resolutions – we have nothing to do but revert to our old behaviour.

Your biggest goals require the biggest changes, the greatest commitments, the most effort and willpower. Those pounds aren’t going to lose themselves; your debt isn’t going away on its own; and the business you want to run isn’t going to start itself.

These are massive undertakings that require a great deal of personal fortitude. The effort required to succeed can seem overwhelming, so much so that you might relent. You ditch your diet and eat the brownie. You forgo your budget and buy the shoes.

You talk yourself out of business ownership and turn on the TV. The good news is that one misstep doesn’t have to derail you if you use the One Day, One Week, One Month Strategy. Here’s what you do:

One Week If you survive the first day –and you will – all you need to do is focus on surviving six more days.

That’s it. You can do anything for a week, and you’ve already made it through the first day.

One Day It doesn’t matter that the book you want to write will take you two years and lots of late nights to complete. It doesn’t matter that the 50 pounds you need

One Month Congratulations! You made it a week. The desire to revert back to old behaviours is strong, but you’ve already gone a whole week. What’s another couple

to lose will take 12 months of sweat and sacrifice to drop. The hard work? The long hours? None of it matters. The only thing you should focus on is one day. That’s it. Surely you can stick to a diet for one day, right? Of course you can follow your budget for one day. It’s just one day. Get over your excuses. Get over the anxiety. You can do anything for a day.

of weeks to make it a month? If at the end of the month you decide it’s not worth it, tell yourself you’ll stop, but give yourself a month.

What happens if you falter? As the old saying goes, if you fall down one step, don’t throw yourself down the whole staircase. If on day four you completely blow it, you simply start over. The next morning, you only focus on getting through one day. Then you take another shot at getting through a week, and you will because it will be much easier the second time. If on week three you crack. No problem. The next morning you simply focus on getting through one day. Then one week. Then take another run at one month. You can do this over and over and over again until you succeed.

And when it comes to New Year’s resolutions?

Well you just may need to try a few times before you succeed!

New Years’ resolutions for your club The sound of Christmas and New Year may have faded but now it’s the time to start thinking about 2019, says Club Insure.

fter a difficult 2018, where stats showed beer sales growing but the number of pubs and bars tumbling, getting this year right is vital for the future of the club industry.

We know there’s external pressures on clubs that you can’t control. We know that costs are growing and consumer habits are changing. But we also saw during the summer of 2018 that demand for local watering holes has never been greater.

This has to be the year, where clubs get their finances spot on. When bottom lines are healthier and a broken roof tile or customer slip doesn’t put the entire business in jeopardy.

We can’t help you set your beer prices or negotiate with suppliers. But we can make sure that you’re not paying large amounts for unnecessary claims.

For 2019, we want you to commit to a number of insurance based New Year’s resolutions for your clubs. These resolutions should not only keep your policy costs down, but also prevent needless claims.

1. You will shop around If your renewal date is coming in 2019, make sure you speak to an insurance expert to make sure you’re getting the best price. 2. You will make the most of risk management Having a policy isn’t the be all and end all of insurance. You need to make the most of the expertise available to you. If your broker has its own risk man-

agement department, like Club Insure does, ask them for advice regularly so that you can ward off claims before they occur.

3. You will think further ahead Insurance is all about foresight. Insurers use it to anticipate the risk factor. And you should use it to eliminate risks. Think one step ahead. If we’re heading towards flood season, follow weather forecasts and make sure your club has adequate sand bags. If England make it to the RWC quarter finals, anticipate that there could be big nights ahead.

6. You will think of insurance as more than just a necessity Insurers and brokers would much rather you have no claims. Therefore they try their hardest to set conditions within your policy to keep accidents and incidents to a minimum. Take their advice when it comes to safety and upkeep of equipment; it’s in their best interest to make your venue claim free.

Keep these resolutions and you can spend 2019 focussing on making your club the hub of social life that it deserves to be.

4. You will educate your staff You can’t leave the insurance responsibilities to one person; everyone must understand their risk management roles and why they’re so important. It’s easier to keep your club claim free if everyone is committed to the same goals.

5. You will read your policy wording Policy wording is designed to make sure you have a full and proper understanding of your commitments and obligations within your policy. It’s not there to

Premises Licence or Club Premises Certificate?

A private members’ club may choose to operate the club’s premises with the benefit of a club premises certificate or a premises licence granted under the Licensing Act 2003. In some cases, the club may choose to have the benefit of both authorisations.

t is worth considering the benefits and burdens of each type of authorisation in order to determine which may be preferable from a licensing point of view.

Club Premises Certificate The application process for the grant of a new club premises certificate is very similar to the process in respect of a premises licence.

Only a “qualifying club” may apply for and hold a club premises certificate. In order to qualify a club must satisfy a number of conditions contained in the Licensing Act, including: • Nobody can be admitted as a member without an interval of at least two days following their nomination or application for membership.

• A person who is admitted as a member other than by prior nomination or application must wait at

least two days before they may enjoy the benefits of membership.

• The club must be established and conducted in good faith as a club.

• The club must have at least 25 members.

• Alcohol must not be supplied, or intended to be supplied, to members on the premises except by or on behalf of the club.

The Licensing Act contains additional conditions

HQ BUILDING THE BUSINESS which a club must satisfy in relation to the supply of alcohol to members or guests: • If the purchase of alcohol for the club is not managed by the club in general meeting or otherwise by the general body of members, it must be managed by a committee made up of members of the club who are at least 18 years old and have been elected by the members of the club.

• No person should receive, at the expense the club, any commission, percentage or similar payment relating to the purchase of alcohol by the club.

• No person should receive a pecuniary benefit from the supply of alcohol by or on behalf of the club to members or guests.

Special provision is made in the Act for registered societies and friendly societies which provides that any such club is to be taken to satisfy the qualifying club conditions if certain requirements relating to their constitution and management are met.

The Act also contains special provisions relating to miners’ welfare institutes in so far as the qualifying conditions are concerned.

The Licensing Act contains a number of specific matters to determine whether a club is established and conducted in good faith: • The club’s freedom to purchase alcohol.

• How money or property of the club is used for the benefit of the club as a whole or for charitable, benevolent or political purposes.

• The arrangements for giving members information about the finances of the club.

• The club’s books of account and other records.

• The nature of the club’s premises.

If the licensing authority decides that a club is not established and conducted in good faith as a club, the authority must give the club notice of the decision and of the reasons for it.

The Act also gives the power to the licensing authority to withdraw a club premises certificate where it appears to the authority that the club does not satisfy the conditions for being a qualifying club.

Provided that a club with the benefit of a club premises certificate retains its qualifying status, it will enjoy a number of benefits: • Alcohol may be supplied to members and sold to guests without the need for anyone to hold a personal licence under the Licensing Act. • Late night refreshment may be provided to members and their guests without the need for any authorisation.

• The police and authorised persons under the Licensing Act have limited rights of entry to club premises.

• If a magistrates’ court makes an order for closure of licensed premises in an area when disorder is happening or expected, it will not apply to the club.

In addition to members of a club and their guests, the only other persons who may enjoy the facilities offered by the club are associate members of the club and their guests.

The Act specifies that a person is an “associate member” of a club if the person is admitted to the

club’s premises, in accordance with the rules of the club, as a member of another club which satisfies the first three qualifying conditions previously mentioned.

The sale of alcohol to a guest of a member for consumption off the club premises is not a qualifying club activity. This is emphasised by conditions which are attached by the Act to a club premises certificate which authorises the supply of alcohol for consumption off the premises: • A club premises certificate can only authorise the supply of alcohol for consumption off the premises provided that it also authorises the supply to members for consumption on the premises.

• The supply for consumption off the premises can only be made when the premises are open for the supply of alcohol to members for consumption on the premises.

• Any alcohol supplied for consumption off the premises must be in a sealed container.

• Any supply of alcohol for consumption off the premises must be made to a member of the club in person.

Commercial clubs, which are usually owned by individuals or companies, operate for the benefit of the proprietor and not the members. As such, they cannot be qualifying clubs and will not be able to apply for a club premises certificate. They will need to operate under the authority of a premises licence.

Premises Licence As can be seen, the provisions of the Licensing Act severely restrict the range of persons allowed to use the premises occupied by a private members’ club if it operates under the authority of a club premises certificate.

The certificate clearly does not allow alcohol to be sold or supplied to members of the public.

It may be suggested that it is possible to circumvent such restrictions by creating a category of temporary membership within the rules of a club, in order to allow individuals to have immediate access to the club. However, the 48-hour requirement in the qualifying conditions does not allow that to take place.

It is still possible to create some flexibility within the rules concerning the definition of a guest of a member, but there must always be at least one individual who is a member of the club in order to introduce the guests.

In order to derive greater commercial benefit from their premises, some private members’ clubs have obtained a premises licence as an alternative, or in addition to, a club premises certificate.

From a club’s point of view, the additional requirements created by a premises licence include: • Where a premises licence authorises the supply of alcohol, it is a condition that no supply of alcohol may be made as a time when no designated premises supervisor has been specified in the licence or at a time when the designated premises supervisor does not hold a personal licence or the personal licence has been suspended.

• A premise licence that authorises the sale of alcohol requires that every supply of alcohol under the

licence must be made or authorised by a person who holds a personal licence.

• The need to ensure that the provision of late night refreshment is authorised by the licence, if required.

• The police and other authorised persons under the Licensing Act have greater rights of entry to licensed premises.

Gambling A private members’ club may apply to the licensing authority for a club gaming permit or club machine permit.

Both permits allow a club to provide a maximum of three gaming machines which may be either category B3A, B4, C or D. Normally, the permits would require renewal every ten years. However, they will remain in force as long as a club retains the benefit of a club premises certificate.

Both permits are subject to a condition that the gaming facilities may only be used by a person who: • Is a member of the club who applied for membership, was nominated for membership or became a member, at least 48 hours before using the facilities, or • Is a guest of a member of the club.

If a private members’ club is operating under the authority of a premises licence and does not have the benefit of a club gaming permit or a club machine permit, the gaming machine entitlements are different.

A premises licence allows the holder to provide a maximum of two gaming machines of either category C or D. In order to provide more than two gaming machines it is necessary for a premises licence holder to apply to the licensing authority for a licensed premises gaming machine permit.

There is no restriction on the number of gaming machines which may be requested, it is matter for the licensing authority as to how many are allowed provided that they are only category C or D machines.

The entitlement to provide a maximum of two gaming machines under a premises licence does not apply if gaming machines are made available on the premises under the authority of a club gaming permit or a club machine permit.

Before a private members’ club makes a decision to apply for a premises licence it would be advisable for the club to obtain specialist advice from an accountant concerning the implications for the club as far as tax is concerned.

Social membership has increased and sporting membership numbers have grown with the addition of the newly formed boxing academy. “Blackburn Leisure is at the heart of the local community, there is no other place like it. The environment is so warm and welcoming, the staff are friendly and courteous. The social events are so well organised and the choice of sports is huge,”said member Darren Adamson. The many activities include affordable Boot Camps, fundraising events, youth football, comedy and Northern Soul nights.

Burton Rugby Football Club

“Burton RFC is involved with the ‘Payback in the Community scheme’ where a number of offenders work on projects at the club as part of a community order. And with the club busy preparing for a new move to a 40 acre site, it is expected that the offenders will enjoy being able to help out with maintenance as part of this project. Links are also being established with local cricket clubs and other rugby clubs to ensure that the new facility is used year round. Its burgeoning youth set up is now one of the most successful in the region with players from as young as five getting involved. The club also visits schools and provides coaching sessions for them to help with their rugby development.

Fundraising events are a key driver, with a ‘Live Aid’ event featuring 14 bands while members are also entertained with Sky Sports and BT Sport, three bars and a food offering. The club’s activities are promoted to the local community via Facebook and Twitter.

During the Open Championships the club took the opportunity to engage with the world’s media. “We held an open day for the media inviting them to the club to play golf and experience the facilities.

As a result this gained us coverage which helped to raise the profile of the club, especially among the American media.”

Royal Southern Yacht Club The Royal Southern Yacht Club club has spearheaded a new web site and brochure which went live in 2018 alongside increased social media presence. The website has a membersonly section where the 1800 members can be kept up to date with activities (alongside an electonice weekly newsletter) while other visitors to the site are invited to explore the club with engaging imagery and clear, concise text. All engagements are followed up and the website is providing the club with an invaluable portal to the club’s funciton business which ranges from from internal club events and sailing activities to wakes, weddings, parties, comedy nights and live music.

Canterbury Rugby Football Club Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2019, there’s nothing dated about Canterbury RFC. The 1,000strong membership, which continues to grow, boosted by women's rugby and wheelchair rugby, enjoys both BT Sport and Sky Sports in its two bars alongside a ramped up calendar of club events, including a huge three day Beer Festival.

Social media has come into its own as a force for marketing and turning up the volume on club activities. “We are very active on social media through twitter and Facebook and have our own website which is updated weekly with all the latest news from the club,” said Chairman Giles Hilton. “The club has started streaming our away games live in the clubhouse so that the other teams can see what's going on a Saturday afternoon. We also have a regular podcast with news and gossip from the club.”

New Eltham Social Club

New Eltham Social Club introduced a three-tier pricing system for its entertainment, with Members gaining free entrance, Associate Members paying £2 and guests paying £5. “This has spurred many guests to become members,” said President Paul Carroll. The club has live entertainment three times a week with tribute nights proving particularly popular. BT Sport and Sky Sports enables the club to show all the big matches, while the annual Christmas party (150 local kids) and Members’ trip (Isle of Wight in 2018) are also popular stalwarts. “Bingo is on Tuesdays and we have pool and darts teams competing in local leagues. We also have a popular homing pigeon club,” said Paul. “There is also a golf society and we stage an annual 'New Eltham Open Championship’ always a competitive day as well as a fundraiser!”

Phoenix Artist Club

In 2018 the club celebrated its 30th birthday with a week of events gaining extensive TV, radio and newspaper coverage. “This comprised inhouse acts which we produced and directed ourselves and West End stars who came in for a photo call,” said Ken Wright, MD and Owner.

The club has 800 performances a year, has launched ‘Search For Talent’ and holds open mic nights on Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays see Blues, Jazz and an in-house DJ, Sunday’s is a kid’s film club and Mondays rotate between the film club and poetry group. The club has also introduced a Netflix subscription incentive which works well for transient members – people working in theatre, cruise ships and so on. The biggest recent successes? “Our 30th birthday and the publicity drawn from becoming Club Mirror’s King of Clubs in 2017,”said Ken.

“We have a very active social scene with regular club nights and family events to get people involved in club life, for example family fun days, Christmas parties, quiz nights, race nights, discos and regular sporting dinners and lunches,” said Chairman Jonathan Knowles. “We're very much part of the local community and we run 'taster' sessions at the club as well as providing coaches for school sessions to give boys and girls a chance to play the game, often for the first time.” The club now has the largest minis section in the West Midlands with 300 boys and girls playing every Sunday. “Our emphasis is on learning the skills and culture of the game and the club has made big efforts to help parents get involved as volunteers by putting them forward for RFU coaching and first aid qualifications.”

Willaston Social Club

Willaston Social Club is celebrating its centenary in 2019 and continues to be very much family-focussed. “We’ve completely redeveloped the kids’ play area with new artificial grass and sectioned it off from other areas,” said stewardess Lesley Kenyon. “Trees were cut down and the big logs used as stepping stones.” The outside area has also been revamped. “Another upside of this is that our function business has increased with people wanting to hold events and parties outdoors. We’ve held several weddings here including my daughter Rachel’s!” said Lesley. Members are kept busy with regular live music, fundraisers – including bungee jumps, teddy bears’ picnics and charity bingo – two snooker teams, three darts teams (and seven dart boards), two football teams and four pool teams. The catering facilities have been invested in to the tune of £26k. “So now we have a professional kitchen for people and fmailies who want to do their own event catering,” said Leslie.

Golf at Goodwood

Growing participation amongst juniors is something which Golf at Goodwood is excelling at, supported by a raft of activities including a golf academy, free golf demos at local schools, well-attended Junior Camps, a ‘Level Up’ Junior programme, an After School Club during term time and a parents’ focus group. Stuart Gillett, General Manager, said: “When we did a focus group with parents they said a barrier for kids was the rules and dress codes. We don’t have any of those – they have fun! Golf has changed its image in the last 10 years; you have to give people easier access.” As a result the club is recruiting more juniors than ever, and 60% of the Sussex Junior Union are members.

Northern Football Club

The club has been working to expand its appeal and change its member demographics, lowering the average age. As part of this the club has switched breweries to Marston's. “We’ve now revamped our drinks offering to make it more 'current' and appeal to younger people,” said General Manager David Giles. “The new range has proven really popular with the younger crowd with the result that sales are up.”

Simultaneously, the revamped bar offering and planned renovation will be targeting members of two local golf clubs. “They’re having big upgrades so we want to ensure that we continue to hold our own while also taking advantage of the fact that the golf clubs will be closed for a while, enabling us to attract customers from there,” said David.

Tiverton Constitutional Club The club’s turnover has increased by around 33% thanks in no small part to a radio station, explained Treasurer Phil Gibbs. Time Radio Tiverton now broadcasts 90% of its live broadcasts from the club with a variety of interviews linked to the club. “People can listen in on the Internet and through our App. This has succeeded in raising the profile of the club substantially,” said Phil. The radio station’s engagement with the Irish Country & Western community attracted the attention of a TV company which filmed ‘Irish in the UK’.

“This has helped us promote the club massively,” said Phil. “We’ve stepped up our marketing with the radio station, Facebook and are having a new web site built. We aim to get stories in the local press every few weeks. We’ve had plenty of media coverage.”

Cobham Sports and Social Club Cobham Sports & Social Club is renowned for its food and, as a result of its popularity, found it was having to turn custom away. A new Orangery, completed before Christmas 2018, has rectified this. “The new Orangery can seat 50 people for dinner. It also includes a 100 square foot patio outside,” said Christopher Weight, General Manager. “Sited next to our lounge, we can now seat 130 diners between the two areas.

We can also shut the dividing doors and the Orangery can be used for private functions.” The club has also invested £10k in a new function bar with a 4m floor-to-ceiling screen, deemed a big success, especially with younger members. It has also enabled the club to upsell more premium products. The combination of all this has seen function business grow exponentially.

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club A new fully-licensed Half-Way House has created a number of opportunities for the club. “Visitors can be offered packages which include a Pie and Beer after 9 holes for £5 per person. Members can get food and drink throughout the day and early starters can grab a bacon sandwich,” said F&B Manager Adrian Pym. At the clubhouse, three-course meals start at £17 with fresh local ingredients used wherever possible and members receive a 15% discount on bar food and 30% on beverages. Other F&B-led activities include a Gin festival, wine and cheese nights, Friday night golf and a meal, curry nights, gourmet dinners, themed dinners and Sunday lunches. This combination saw F&B revenue come in well-over budget in 2018.

Leicestershire County Cricket Club Leicestershire County Cricket Club (LCCC) is an illustrious name in first-class cricket. Penn Bowling Club Penn Bowling Club hosts County matches and in 2018 also hosted the National Ladies Veterans Semi-Final and Finals. Ensuring that its 1200 members and 13 bowling teams are kept up to date with events is key, so the club has introduced an e-newsletter which (at time of 2018’s judging) already had 500 people signed up to it. Darts, dominoes and crib teams, a bridge club, comedy nights, music and bingo also make up the fabric of the inclusive club, whilst two key dates in the year have become firm favourites. “Our May Beer Festival, now in its seventh year, attracts 600 people, earning £1516k in revenue,” said Steward Stewart Gardner.

“We also hold a very popular Fun Day in August and the proceeds go to a local charity.”

Northern Lawn Tennis Club In its five acre site, Northern Lawn Tennis Club has 25 tennis courts with nine of these at Wimbledon standard. The club boasts 11 teams playing in the league (six men’s, five women’s) and 400 children play at the club at various levels. Claims to fame include the fact that Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe have played here and it’s also where Pete Sampras won his first ever grass court tournament. The club has built on these credentials, creating a pictorial display to highlight the club’s heritage. The club also has six squash courts, a gym, a bar and patio area and undertook a £60k refurbishment in 2018. In-house catering has added to the mix.

“The club is now full. Food is available all day breakfast, lunch, dinner and so on - seven days a week,” said Jamie White, Chief Executive.

“Leeds Golf Club is now a shining beacon against a landscape of adversarial economic conditions facing golf clubs across the UK,” said Mike Smith, Editorial and Commercial Manager at the club. A major push on the Junior section is proving successful and has resulted in the reintroduction of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, open to Juniors across the county. The Leeds Cup (the PGA’s oldest cup) was hosted there as well as the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association Challenge Bowl. The introduction of an Under 40s initiative, Golf Beginners Academy, establishment of a Development Committee, online booking, Bar Swipe/Customer Loyalty Card, Flexiplay and a detailed review of suppliers all contributed to the club’s success in the 2018 Club Awards.

Shifnal Golf Club

Investment in all areas of the club are key to attracting in members and, notably, golf societies. “We’ve invested £60-90k on equipment to maintain the course,” said Marketing Director Nick Evans. This included a new pump for the course (£3.5k), £10.5k on a dedicated ISDN line to improve the Internet access and phone lines, as well as spending £3k on refurbishing the bar.

Lighting on the clubhouse’s ground floor has been upgraded and a Ladies taster day was introduced to encourage more women to play golf. “At the weekend they can go on the range with a pro and the Ladies Captain,” said Nick.

“We’ve also introduced a new Ladies 9 hole membership.” In 2018 the club hosted the Four Counties Junior Golf Tournament as well as the PGA professional tournament for the fifth consecutive year.

CPR – Care, Precision, Refinement – is the order of the day at Formby, explained Stuart Leech, Manager. “We really value our customers.

Every little detail is carefully attended to, whether it’s how a plate is presented, the trimming of the bunkers or drinks served. We have our own blend of coffee beans and our logo is put in the foam of the cappuccinos.” In this regard, staff training is a major focus. The club has also invested in a new open web site so it’s easier for visitors to engage. “It has rave reviews and links through to social media,” said Stuart.

The club conducted a full membership survey and is using it to refresh its four year plan which includes hiring a course architect to examine how each hole can be improved. “We want to rise up in the rankings of golf courses, so that’s part of the architect’s brief,” said Stuart. New membership categories, increased social media presence and promoting to the US market are other achievements applauded by the judges.

Cookley Sports Club

Cookley Sports Club opened a multi-use games area at a cost of £40k which is used for football, netball and tennis. “We’ve also introduced disabled access for the kids’ play area and installed a multi-use cricket strip,” said Steward Dean Cox. Alongside its three bars with BT Sport and Sky Sports, the club has facilities for all walks of life, from four football and two cricket pitches to a bowls green, skateboard park, BMX track and canal walks. The club’s music festival attracted 4,500 people in 2018, its beer festival continues to thrive (55 ales and 46 ciders) while an outside servery is now open throughout the winter, catering for its 18 football teams.

With a full membership (5,000 comprising 3,700 adults and 1,300 kids) Roehampton has completed a £4m health club redevelopment. The club has a golf course, newly refurbished health club (costing £4.7m), pools, tennis courts, squash courts and croquet lawns. The 2018 Gant tennis championships were held at the club, hosting many Wimbledon stars. “We have vast number of teams in every sport, and many members go on to great things,” said Chief Executive Marc Newey. “Annabelle Fuller, for example, is the youngest ever golf player to have represented Great Britain in the Curtis Cup competition at just 15.” Catering has been franchised out, providing better menus at a lower cost while increasing revenues. Members can now enjoy refreshment from a brasserie-style café which is open from 7.30am-6.30pm. The bar serves food from 6pm-10pm and the Juice Bar opens between 9am-7pm. The club now has an 18 month waiting list.

Consett AFC In 2018 Consett AFC joined forces with the Newcastle United Foundation and Newcastle College to launch a programme which gives talented young players (16-18 year olds) the chance to combine studies with practical football experience. The club is very involved with the aiming to make football accessible to everyone.

“We’ve also worked with the local police force to get young people involved in sport and to combat anti-social behavior,” said Chairman Frank Bell.

The club has raised over £100k for a local hospice charity, and runs CPR courses for the British Heart Foundation; this has reached 6,000 people so far. “We’ve also held our third successful Consett Music festival with over 5,000 in attendance,” said Frank. “And over 7,000 people attend our fireworks night.”

Kings Heath Cricket and Sports Club With seven acres of land and spanning cricket, squash, football, bowls, hockey, table tennis and snooker, King’s Heath celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018. The club has been recognised for its contribution to the All-Stars Cricket initiative and as well as its key sports membership, the social side of the club continues to thrive. “We have a range of classes and community groups which means that mums can come into the club to meet their friends and they can all bring their babies and children with them,” said Manager Peter Hunt. Celebrating its 30th year in 2019, Nunsfield has 1,450 members with darts proving a big draw.

Manager Paul Walton said: “We have actively encouraged our darts teams by installing more boards around the building. We have two match boards and a dedicated practice room with two boards that are permanently available for use.”

The club also has four more boards for larger tournaments, used as and when required. “We realised the popularity of darts and actively encouraged teams to play from Nunsfield House.

We pay all league fees for each team and provide food on match nights.” The investment has paid off, with a marked increase in takings on darts match nights and an increase in people using the club on a regular basis for practice.

“We're a bustling club with activities going on seven days a week,” said Secretary Val McConnell. “We have a well-stocked bar at good prices plus excellent food all week, including a Sunday Carvery.” The club focuses on families and, as well as family-friendly activities, members of 20 years-plus are treated to a seaside trip. “The sports section is very busy and a source of new members who want to use our excellent facilities,” said Val. Rossington Labour & Social Club

Eight years ago Rossington Labour Club was two hours away from being closed under a previous regime. Intervention by the CIU saw the doors kept open and Secretary Andy Lee was drafted in to help for five weeks. He is still there eight years later and the club is flourishing.

“I believe that Union clubs have a huge amount to learn from each other,” said Andy. “We have great relationships with the other CIU clubs in our area and I’m always keen to share any advice that I can.” In 2018 the club spent £60k on refurbishing the Concert Room, bringing in very profitable function revenue. The club has also refurbished its toilets and Games Room and is finalising plans to redo the kitchen to expand the food offering. The club launched a 'Gin Bar' with speciality mixers and gins plus a Cocktail Menu which includes house special, the 'Rosso Wallbanger'. The club is delighted that younger people are now joining the club and the Committee now includes 30-40 year olds.

Grangemoor WMC has succeeded in attracting 200 more members in the past 12 months. “We’ve appointed a new Entertainment Secretary who has brought in new acts and we now have a 22 year old on the committee who is coming up with new ideas,” said Mandy Edwards, Secretary. The club now has both BT Sport and Sky Sports and boasts a darts team, crib team, men’s and women’s pool teams, bands, karaoke nights, sports functions and an over 50s night. Improvements to the club include refurbishment of the function room, re-polishing the dance floor, a new disabled ramp and a new front and back door (£4k) as well as a new CCTV system (£6k). Ninety years old, the club is very much on top of its game, maximising the gin resurgence with different varieties served in big gin glasses.

Mildenhall Social Club saw an increase in membership of 200 in the past 12 months, bringing membership up to its optimum 1,200. “We opened a carvery and café at an investment of £7,000,” said Marilyn McGuire, Manager. “We already had the building on site and many members have been so enthusiastic that they’ve helped with carpentry, painting and so on on a voluntary basis.” The club also started a purpose built community cinema. “The cinema is also open to the public,” said Marilyn. “There’s a general screening once a month and a kids’ ‘Sunday lunch’ cinema once a month.” A rolling programme of entertainment offers different acts twice a week along with bingo and quizzes. The club has five gaming machines, BT Sport and Sky Sports, pool teams, darts teams, a local poker league and a bowls team.

Cheltenham Rugby Club puts charity fund-raising and support high on its list of priorities. It hosts and supports the Mid-Counties CoOperative Annual Fun Day which has raised over £50k for local charities during the last two years. It also supports the National Star Centre for disabled people who will be using the club’s new changing rooms, and at Christmas it entertained and fed 74 Riding for the Disabled riders. Over £2k has been raised for the Alzheimer’s Society, thousands of pounds are raised in support of Motor Neuron Disease (in support of an ex-player’s son) and a 24 hour walk to raise funds for Kitty Kerr’s operation in the US was undertaken in 2018.

“We're passionate believers in using sport to improve the lives of people in the local community, from four year-olds to veterans,” said Frank Bell, Chairman. “We’ve been running training courses for special needs children and we now have junior and senior sections.” The take-up has been fantastic and at the end of the season the club held a special 'Oscars' awards night. “We put on a three-course meal for the players, coaches and carers,” said Frank. Special dinners and events raise funds for charities including the Air Ambulance and the Young Firefighters.

A main fundraisers is the two-day Consett Music Festival where around 8,500 people attend, and the club has raised some £10k for the Willowburn Trust in a 12 month period, with the Fizz Fest - prosecco, live music and food - proving particularly popular.

Its annual Festival sees the committee working with local businesses to create a community event hosted in the club's large car park. “It brings many new people into the club for the first time and creates a major buzz locally,” said Stewards Kenny and Janine Bailey, who celebrated their 10th year as Boothstown’s Club Stewards in 2018. The committee also worked with local churches, schools and community groups to commemorate 2018’s World War I Centenary. In terms of membership, and the club’s loyalty scheme continues to work well with discounts for members. The introduction of a weekend Gin Bar has also proved a massive success.

Celebrating its Centenary in 2019, Pitshill Victory Club’s 1,260 members are benefitting from a number of new people on the committee including younger members. “The committee decided to build up the entertainment programme and now we’ve increased the number of live acts every weekend. We also decided to run raffles to cover the cost of bingo three nights a week so that members don’t have to pay,” said Secretary and Treasurer Dan Capewell. “It’s working well and more people are coming in.” One of the committee’s greatest recent hits has been the introduction of a café which offers sandwiches and pies, gaining good feedback from members. Along with its three bars and five gaming machines, the busy committee puts on live music on Saturdays and Sundays, and boasts five boules teams, snooker and darts teams.

Roehampton has completed a £4m health club redevelopment. “This has had a huge impact on the club,” said Chief Executive Marc Newey.

“We now have three exercise studios including a spinning studio, and the number of fitness classes has tripled. Among many other things we also changed the shape of the outdoor pool so it’s now more family-friendly.” A £2m project for an indoor tennis block was completed in November 2018 and catering has been franchised out, providing better menus at a lower cost while increasing revenues. “We did a survey in March which had a 40% response rate; 95% of respondees gave us top marks for fulfilling our vision and strategy of the club.” As a result of the redevlopment, family usage has risen as has that of senior adults. Market research company GGA undertook a survey among 140 clubs worldwide and Roehampton reached best in class for its golf greens, gym, classes, gardens and treatments in the sports injury clinic.

In 2018 Kings Heath celebrated reaching its 150th anniversary. The key event was the Cricket Festival Week in July which saw events every evening for a whole week, from a family fun day to an 'All Stars Cricket' night, golf day and a wine and cider festival where the club launched its own special wines with the club logo on the label. On a day to day basis the club continues to develop from its early roots, boosting daytime trade in particular by encouraging more people to use the refurbished lounge (which now includes a new state of the art bean-to-cup coffee machine). Mums are a particular focus, providing them with a friendly and secure environment where they can take the kids along while they join in classes and meet with friends. “This has brought in a lot of families during the day and they have subsequently joined the club,” said Manager Peter Hunt.

Two early tries from winger Jonny May set up a hard-fought 12-6 victory for England at Twickenham in the 2018 Championship but Wales battled all the way to the final whistle and came close to scoring a try in the final exchanges. The home players would dearly love to provide departing coach Warren Gatland with a title to round off his final Six Nations and will not lack for motivation.

It would be a major upset if Schalke were to knock out Manchester City from the competition in the Round of 16 but the German side have been fairly effective on the domestic stage in recent weeks. However, they simply do not possess the talent of their rivals and could wilt under the pressure of coping with such key players as Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane.
