Quick-Start Teacher Guide

ROAR Teacher Guide (Use of this guide is optional)

PREPARE MATERIALS Each student should have the following: 1. A computer, laptop, or iPad 2. Headphones 3. A card for one of the following login methods: a. Clever QR code or Clever username and password b. Or ROAR dashboard user ID and password 4. A quiet activity to do when they are finished.

LOG IN If you are using Clever: Launch ROAR from Clever Portal

If you are not using Clever: Provide students a link to https://roar.education.

Direct students to enter their ROAR user ID and password.

THE ROAR DASHBOARD

Students will be shown an Assent Form, which is summarized in the general instructions below. They will need to press “Continue” to advance to the games.

The games available to your students are listed horizontally:

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS You may use this script to help students start the first time: “You are going to play some games that will help Stanford researchers understand how people learn how to read! Your school will also receive your game scores.

“When I am finished giving instructions, you will put on your headphones, and log into ROAR. It will ask you if you want to play the games, so if you do, click the red button that says ‘Continue.’

“The games are listed across the top of the screen. Click on the picture to start the first game. Follow the instructions you hear in your headphones. After you finish each game, the game will send you back to the dashboard. You will see your progress circle fill in with each game you complete. Since this is a research project, you can stop the activity by closing your browser window at any time, and you will not get in trouble.

“When all games are finished, you may close the tab and read your book. Have fun!”

ASSESSMENT-SPECIFIC GUIDE The game itself will provide your students with instructions through their headphones. If you would feel more comfortable orienting your students to the game ahead of time, you can use these scripts to describe each game: 1. ROAR - Letter (Letter Name and Sound Matching) “In the first part of this game, the narrator is going to say the name of a letter. Your job is to choose the square that has that letter on it. In the second part of the game, the narrator is going to say a sound you often hear in a word. Your job is to press the square that has the letter or pair of letters that can spell that sound.”

2. ROAR - Phoneme (Phonological Awareness) “In this game, the narrator is going to name the pictures on the screen. Your job is to choose the picture in the bottom row that shares a sound with the name of the picture in the top row. In each level the narrator will tell you what to focus on, which will be the first-sound, the lastsound, or a part of the name. After the narrator names the pictures, you can choose the answer.”

3. ROAR - Word (Single-Word Recognition) “In this game, keep your eyes on the center of the screen. A word will flash on the screen. If it is a made-up word, press the LEFT arrow key. If it is a real word, press the RIGHT arrow key. Keep one finger over each arrow while you play. It’s okay to guess if you are not sure.”

4. ROAR - Sentence (Sentence-Reading Efficiency) “In this game, a sentence will appear on the screen. You will decide whether the sentence is true or false. If the sentence is false, press the LEFT arrow key. If the sentence is true, press the RIGHT arrow key. Keep one finger over each arrow while you play. There is a time limit, so try to be as fast and accurate as possible. It’s okay to guess if you are not sure.”

5. ROAR - Vocab (Vocabulary) “In this game, the narrator will say a word, and you will choose the picture that shows the word. Click the speaker to hear the word a second time.”
