This project appears in the new area of the city, in the modern shore of the river, withy the aim of becoming the new focus of leisure in the area.

Providing in fact two shopping mall, the inner and the outer one, invites the citizens to come and enjoy their spare time there, taking special care of giving support to acyivities as for cinemas, F&B and clubs, and even fair atttractions.

A wide concept of mall, more than a shopping-mall, a recreational center.

I worked in this project from the preliminary conceptual stage till SD completion.

The project includes a shopping-mall, a retail treet with a parking building and an office tower.

I usually develop several options by myself, this allows me to have a wider and better vision of the project.

Working on the master-plan allows me to have the size and the numbers under control at early stages, I build the 3d model by myself for the same reason, later other team members will work on the floor-plans deeper, but once the scheme is set.

At early stages we develop several options, in brainstorming sesions, exploring different layouts. I usually jump from one option to the other, studying different posibilities of those various shapes as well, which could lead to other compositive topics, material use, etc...

After having studied several options, the CRUISE SHIP was the topic chosen for this project. Nanjing is a city which was born beside the Yand-Tse river, therefore it is quite an appropiate one.

It is time to go ahead in the composition, handsketching first, behind every line there has to be a reason.

Using the sketch as a work document, taking fast notes of the ideas, the materials, writing down instructions which will be very useful for the later on steps.

Every elevation, every perspective worths to be studied. By hand, but having the dimensions and proportions under control.

I enjoy sketching all around the building from the very beguinning and keep doing it while the project is progressing, looking always for different possibilities, looking for opportunities which might be hidden.

The entrance areas always require special attention, studying the proportions, the relationship between diferent materials, the balance of volumes.

While designing by hand and the floor-plans progress, we build a 3D model. In this project we worked with Sketchup, since we were not supposed to develop it beyond SD.

I took care by myself of the mall and the tower, at that time we considered it would be faster to work like that, therefore I was sketching and then building it on the 3Dmodel.

I like using the SKU model to bring to life the elevations (with some PS work too). In this case, since we were a small team working on the project by that time, I was not only leading the design but also working on these elevations.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO LEAD AND ROW AT ONCE.

These renderings were done from that SKU model. We sent it to an external company (GINSUN) for we didn´t have in-house render staff at that time.

I took care personally of the render lead, I sent the model altoghether with reference images related to the light condition and the different materials. And despite of the possible language issues, this is the result we got.

These is NO BACK FACADE, every angle needs to be designed according to its special requirements.

I was asked to join to this project when its had already started. The client was not satisfied with the design direction during the CD stage and asked to change the design team.

I began developing this first option as a Shopping Palace, trying to include some elements which would help me to organice such a long facade, and it was accepted at first, but the client asked to develop some more interesting concept for the roof.

Liantai Nanchang Hongjiao Detlta Commercial Complex was the chance to design in an already consolidated residential area. The topic which inspired this design was the arrival of the warm wind at the beguinning of the Spring. The awaken of the plants, the melting of the ice, the wind flowing through the mountains, moving the flowers in the meadows.

The retail street was solved as a trasition element between the shopping mall and the residential. The retail street provides not only new retail opportunities but also a new public space for gathering, a place where families can attend to in order to enjoy open air activities.

I created this new roof for the Shopping Palace, covered with a colorful tiling system the roof would look like a meadow from the surounding residential, but yet this concept was too formal for them.

Zefiro torna

“Zephir returns”

Zephir returns and fills the air with good scents, and warms the waters, and, whispering in the green branches, gets the flowers to dance in the meadow.

Phillis and Chloris with a garland of flowers on their head, are singing love songs, while the sweet harmony echoes through the woods, valleys and caves.

A beautiful dawn rises in the sky and the sun is shining more, while a silver light

This Monteverdi-Rinuccini madrigal (music by Claudio Monteverdi - verse by Ottavio Rinuccini) tells of Zephir, the spring wind, and of poetic sensitivities and pains of love of an unhappy man.

This new concept, inspired on the Dawn of Spring was accepted and was the one we developed. I sketched at first, identifying the different options for materials, and again solving the composition for such a long facade.

I work with color markers on sketch paper, this allows to go fast and keep it under control, and sometimes, for some special details, I must confess I paint with mt fingers.

For the open retail area (selable retail) the client asked us to work in the same style as the residential they were building on the back side, DECO (some kind of New Chinese Deco very succesful

over there nowadays). I sketched the elevations in Deco style and built a SKU model, but they finally didn´t follow that way because they realized it would be too expesive for them to build it.

Always trying to rationalise and keep design under control. Writting down notes about details, materials or any other matter which could give a clue in the next steps.

Always studying the entrances as a key point, it is worth to study variations. And like I always say, there is no back facade, just different scale or different character.

The design of the atmosphere and the open space is as important as the design of the main building itself.

Designing mixed-use is a kind of scenographic design, I like designing a story together with the architecture.

In this project we worked as a small team, five people altogether. I was in charge of the design lead, designing the whole project by handsketching, building by myself the 3D SKU model and leading the rendering production.

Jinan City Crossing is a huge mixeduse complex, it is a city inside the city.

I worked in this project during the CD stage. The special challenge was to conjugate the plenty variety of functions that the briefs includes, alltoghether with dealing with the sloped plot, and turning this initial weakness into an attractive situation which would allow us to play with three real L1 levels.

The huge scale of the plot suggested the need of introducing a strong movement and a sequence of geometries which would become a kind of eye-catching visual feast.

I worked on this design at the end of the MP stage and beguinning of CD. I provided this visualfeast of rich and rocky volumes running along the facade.

This design would allow to adapt the building to the strong slopes in the surounding (this mall has three main entrances at different levels due to the slopes).

I worked on handsektches over the body provided by the MP mass model, after that I built a more accurate SKU model and did some PS on it.

I enjoy producing in-house images, at intermediate stages, there is no need to go rendering, and I use it like a way to go deeper into the design, and sometimes into the workflow itself.

Before jumping into SD stage, I provided this new concept, based in nature as well, but this time FOSSIL is the main topic in the composition.

I really enjoyed working on this snail-shaped cover which brings so much movement all along the facades.

Hangzhou Xiaosan MIXc

I worked in this project providing design lead in CD stage, and then jumped to other works.

For this design I worked with topics from Hangzhou area’s cultural heritage: the shapes and patterns inspired in their traditional pottery.

Hangzhou Xiaosan MIXc was the oportunity of working in the design of a double shopping mall, one indoors and another one outdoors.

The need of solving two different scales, atmospheres, and business management, suggested a very clear game of volumes, materials and textures, giving the indoors mall the dramatisim that it needs and keeping for the retail street quite a European flavour, building in that way a new commercial promenade facing to the water channel.

The relationship between the two office towers is stablished by using a common languaje and connecting their podiums to the inner space of the retail street.

Studying special areas as for example this round plaza while sketching, is always very helpful in future stages.

It is not only about the constructution, but also about the atmosphere, the scenes we want to create.

Considering from the beginning the relationship between materials, reflections, refractions, harmonic and complementary colors, the balance of volumes, the transition between patterns.

Almost at the end of DD stage, the client asked for a new topic for the round plaza. I jumped again into the project, but as the team was really reduced by that time, I had to work on my own, going from CD to DD in a very short time, providing several options, setting the elements clear with the client, so that my colleagues could include this new design in their already advanced DD work.

Shantou Longhu Park Project

This project had been on hold for quitea long time, after it restarted the client decided to “update” it, which in fact meant redisign some areas.

The team was alradu working on 30%DD stage, with REVIT. I was asked to redesign the facade for the selable retail area and to solve the issues appeared in the main facade after some changes they made.

I studied the pros and cons for the main facade changes, and provided two options with reasonable changes, so that the client could make the choice and our team copuld introduce the modifications easily in our REVIT model.
