We often take for granted one of Albert Lea’s greatest gems: its lakes.

Whether you enjoy them from a distance, fish from their shores or venture out on them by boat, most people would agree that they are a major asset that sets Albert Lea apart from neighboring cities.

In this issue, we wanted to get out on Fountain Lake firsthand with Scott Hanna and his crew from the Boathouse at Brookside Park to find out about all of the activities that are available at our fingertips through this community endeavor.

In addition to canoes, kayaks and paddleboards to use on the lake, there are bikes, hamboards, croquet and bocce available for rent from the Boathouse.

Many of these items are also available for rent at Myre-Big Island State Park.

Once out on the lake, there is some spectacular wildlife available for view. We encourage people to take advantage of our natural and community resources that make it available for all to enjoy this beauty.

Aside from these outdoor opportunities, in this issue we also showcased some other things adults can do this summer.

In addition to these activities, we featured the bold artwork of Albert Lean David Lenz, who uses bright colors to produce thought-provoking work.

We featured the expertise of Melissa Wittmer of Polished Salon, who offers color analysis through her business in helping people figure out what color clothes and makeup look best on them.

Angie Denherder of rural Hallandale provides her usual creativity for this issue’s DIY, which is a dragonfly made from a stair banister. It can be hung up outside to provide some color and beauty in the gardens.

GARDEN Working as a freelance illustrator for several large companies, Angie DenHerder of Hollandale has creative juices in her blood. Aside from her job, DenHerder enjoys refurbishing furniture and creating signs and chalkboards.

She took us step-by-step through how to make this decorative garden dragonfly.

Cut off both ends of porch spindle. Drill hole in top of spindle and in wooden ball.

Connect spindle and wooden ball using small wooden dowel.

What you will need: Chicken wire, (12-by-14-inches) 1 pine porch spindle 1 wooden finial 1 wooden ball Spool of wire Small wooden dowel Hanger Paint

Glue finial onto bottom of spindle using wood glue. Let sit to dry.

Draw a template for two sizes of dragonfly wings. Cut chicken wire for two wings of each size. Cut chicken wire about a half inch larger than the template on all sides. Bend wire from spool into shape of wings. Again, make two of each size.

Attach chicken wire to other wire using pliers and wire cutters as needed. Complete all four wings.

Arrange Mrs. Gerry’s Premium Macaroni & Cheese on unbaked crust. Top with Mozarella cheese, bacon and cheddar cheese. Bake until pizza reaches a minimum of 165°F.

Spicy Cowboy Pizza

Spread jalapeño ranch dressing over unbaked crust. Top with cooked chicken or steak, Mrs. Gerry’s Cowboy Caviar (drained), jalapeño peppers, Mozarella cheese and a sprinkle of bacon. Bake until pizza reaches a minimum of 165°F.

Cheesecake Dessert Pizza

Lightly dust unbaked crust with cinnamon and sugar. Bake according to package directions. Let cool completely. Spread Mrs. Gerry’s Cheesecake Supreme over cooled cooked crust. Top with canned pineapple tidbits (drained), sliced strawberries and blueberries.

SATISFY YOUR

SWEET TOOTH Sarah Stultz is a mother living and working in Albert Lea who enjoys making and trying new foods.

I don’t know about you, but I love summer because that means it’s grilling season. I’m always trying to find new recipes, whether it’s for a main or side dish or even a dessert.

This recipe incorporates a delicious coconut pound cake to satisfy my sweet tooth and incorporates fresh produce. This cake can be combined with any fruit — strawberries just happen to be the one I chose.

Grilled Shortcake Skewers Ingredients Strawberries Coconut pound cake (see ingredients and directions below) Whipped cream Directions Cut fruit and pound cake into similarly sized cubes. Thread onto barbecue skewers and grill over medium high heat, turning occasionally until fruit is soft and pound cake is toasted, about 6 to 8 minutes. Serve with whipped cream.

Coconut pound cake Ingredients 2 cups white sugar 1 cup butter 5 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 cup milk 3 1/2 ounces flaked coconut 1 teaspoon coconut extract

Directions Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan.

In a large bowl, cream together 2 cups sugar and butter. Fold in the eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each one before adding another.

In separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, milk, flaked coconut and coconut extract. Beat into the creamed mixture. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

Bake one hour in preheated oven, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Summer Lemonade

A refreshing, 21-and-over take on

I’ve never been a fan of sweet, sugary drinks — whether they’re alcoholic or not. I’ve always liked lemonade, though, when it’s not too sugary, of course. Real lemonade — in all its tart, citrusy glory — always seems to do the trick on hot summer days.

Strawberries happen to be one of my favorite fruits, and it was always a treat having them sliced up and plopped into a cold glass of lemonade when I was growing up.

So, when looking for a fun, summer (adult) drink for this issue of Albert Lea

magazine, I decided to look for a spin on a tried and true classic. This strawberry lemonade incorporates White Water Whiskey — a tribute to the Minnesota 13 moonshine made back in the days of Prohibition — from Panther Distillery in Osakis. Any other moonshine of choice could be incorporated, though.

Either way, this recipe is a good remedy for keeping cool on those sweltering Minnesota summer days. It’s especially refreshing after a long day of yard work, too, in case you were wondering.

Summer Lemonade Ingredients 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice 6 cups water 2 cups granulated sugar 2 cups White Water Whiskey (or other moonshine) 1/2 cup grenadine syrup Strawberry slices Lemon slices Ice Directions Put the water and sugar in a small pot over medium heat and heat until sugar has dissolved and the water starts to clear, stirring occasionally so the sugar doesn’t burn. The mixture does not need to boil. Let cool.

In a separate container, combine lemon juice, strawberries, moonshine and grenadine syrup and stir. Combine with sugar water mixture once it has cooled.

When ready, pour over ice and add slices of lemon.

Fountain Lake Readers “The Gilded Hour”

by Sara Donati

Review by Barb Sletten “In American history, the Gilded Age was an era of serious social problems masked by a thin coat of gold gilding.”

Two female women doctors in New York City in 1883, the start of the Guilded Age, make up the pages of this historical fiction novel. Ann Savard and her cousin, Sophie, are graduates of the Women’s Medical College. Daily, they deal with the prejudices against women doctors in their medical practice. As most of the patients are women, they find themselves in a constant battle against Anthony Comstock, “an antivice crusader who considers himself an enemy of everything indecent.”

The women also struggle to reunite a family of four orphaned children, newly arrived in America. Anna met two of the children at a medical receiving center on Ellis Island. A search began for the other two children with the help of a handsome Italian policeman who had entered Anna’s life and and heart.

At the end of the book, characters have been well-established, but the storyline falls apart and there are many loose ends. The characters cannot be left dangling, so there has to be a sequel. I look forward to it!

The details of the Gilded Age are accurate and interesting and part of why I liked the book.

Fountain Lake Readers “Ordinary Grace”

by William Kent Krueger Review by Joanne Johnsrud William Kent Krueger is famous for writing many mysteries based in northern Minnesota; however, the book “Ordinary Grace” is a departure from his norm.

This book is a coming-of-age story told through the perspective of Frank, a 13-year-old boy in a small town in Minnesota in 1961. There are five deaths in the small town during the summer from a myriad of causes: natural, accidental, suicide and murder.

Frank gets a first-hand look at the presence of evil in the community, while his family is torn apart by the murder of one of their own. A central theme is that bad things happen to good people and through grace people survive these situations and heal.

Krueger’s simple eloquence and development of the characters makes this book an extraordinary read. The members of our reader’s group enjoyed this and highly recommend it for your summer reading list!

Fountain Lake Readers “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End”

Review by Alyce (Penny) Jacobsen Ever since I learned the importance of having an advance directive for health care, I have been interested in reading about end-of-life issues.

“Being Mortal,” by surgeon Atul Gawande is an important book about living well, dying and how the medical profession and nursing homes could make a person’s last months — or last days — more comfortable and more meaningful.

Gawande demonstrates how the capabilities of medical technology can prolong life and also prolong the dying process. He says doctors often offer false hopes and treatments that do nothing to improve the patient’s condition but are futile attempts to deny death.

The author has a lot to say about how assisted living facilities and nursing homes should modify many of their policies and practices. Their goal should be “to make life worth living even for the weak and frail who can no longer fend Want a good book to read for themselves.” but don’t know where to start? Consider these “Being Mortal” begins with the statement, “I learned about a lot of things in books read recently from medical school, but mortality wasn’t one of them. Our textbooks had almost an area book club. nothing on aging or frailty or dying.” I think Gawande’s message should be required reading for everyone who works in the medical field.

Man started with drawing, finds greatest passion painting

A

s far back as Albert Lean David Lenz can remember, he has always had an interest in art.

He joked that his first canvases in life were the inside covers of books on the bottom bookshelf in his parent’s home, on which he drew trains and airplanes as a young child.

While in school as a child, he said, he had a teacher who used to get after him for always drawing spaceships and laser guns.

His interest in art continued into college when he attended Northwestern College in the Twin Cities for graphic design and landed his first job as a concept artist for a

sci-fi game company — drawing the very thing his teacher discouraged him from doing years earlier.

Lenz said he worked in the Twin Cities for about 17 years before returning to Albert Lea 12 years ago.

Around that same time, his love for art expanded when he started painting.

“I was always an artist, but it was mostly pencil and whatnot,” he said. “My wife would say, ‘Why don’t you try painting?’ I would say I don’t have the patience to be a painter.”

After numerous trips to Grand Marais, he said something changed.

“I got the bug,” Lenz said. “I woke up

one day and said, ‘I think I want to try painting.’”

He started as a realism painter — his most common subjects on the North Shore and in northern Minnesota.

He said after reaching a point where he realized his art wasn’t going to get better without taking any chances, he started painting abstract about four or five years ago. Abstract painting has helped him get a better understanding of the paint, as well as of different mediums and textures.

“I fell in love with doing that, too,” he said, noting he can go from making a wild abstract painting one day to a nature scene the next.

Lenz uses acrylic paint for his creations, which he said dries quickly — a plus when his two young children are around.

He also incorporates different textures into his paintings with other materials.

He paints in a large studio of sorts in the back of his home with large windows that allow for lots of natural light to come into the room and prefers using bright colors in his work.

Lenz said he plans to have an open studio showing his work sometime in October.

“I’m not afraid of color,” he said “I like to paint with warm, cheery color. Not that everything is smiles, but I like the warmth of the color.”

Lenz said he has enjoyed watching the reactions to his paintings, as some people prefer realism, while others prefer abstract art. He doesn’t care so much what the reaction is; he simply likes people having some sort of response to his work.

“The painting is a gift from God, and whether I make money off of it or not, I love doing it. I don’t really lose if I don’t sell.”

He teaches everything from cartooning to sculpting and painting. He said he tries to give the children in his classes the tools they need to excel and then let them use their own creativity to take their work a step further.

After taking a break recently from painting, he has started up again in hopes of having an open studio show in early October based off of all the pieces he creates this summer.

From recreation to socializing, there’s lots to do in Albert Lea

S

ummer is not always as fun-filled as sunscreen and baked beans commercials depict. People still have jobs, they still need oil changes and many cannot pick up and head to the Twin Cities for a fun activity on a Tuesday night in July out of the blue.

The children are out of school, the daylight lasts longer and to many, it feels wrong to stay inside.

Scott Hanna wants to help fill some of those empty boxes on your summer calendar and maximize the number of new activities your family tries this summer.

Hanna’s official title is the Albert Lea School District 241 Community Education, Environmental Learning Center, Experiential Education coordinator.

“But to most people, I am just the rockgym guy,” Hanna said.

As a firefighter, activities volunteer for the school district and Albert Lea native, Hanna is not easily intimidated by trying new things in town.

Hanna explained his theory that people in Albert Lea are more welcoming of newcomers if they are introduced to natives through a fellow Albert Lea native.

“I am told that not being from Albert Lea, it is hard to meet people here,” Hanna said. “I am from Albert Lea, so that came as a surprise to me because I go everywhere.”

Hanna and the Brookside Boathouse have been instrumental in organizing a group for adults called Gather, who want to meet new people in town and try new things.

“If you go somewhere (as a new person in Albert Lea), it is going to take you 42 | ALBERT LEA | JULY/AUGUST 2017

multiple times before people are going to start opening up,” Hanna said.

One example of something the Gather group might do is take a trailer of bikes out of town for the evening, and proceed to bike back to Albert Lea as a group. The group will enjoy camaraderie as well as physical activity in a conducive environment.

Hanna has a hard time deciding which summertime opportunity in Albert Lea is his favorite because he dabbles in so many different things.

“The problem is, I like a lot of things — I like hiking, I like canoeing, I like running into retired school teachers here because they had an impact on my life, I like the community gardens although I don’t want to be in the garden. You know, I like all these things,” Hanna said. “I like it all, I want it all and I have it all — and that is really why I love Albert Lea.” As a coordinator for both the Boathouse and rock gym, Hanna meets people every day who are either new to town or new to an activity.

“Some people use these activities as a social opportunity to meet up with people and get together. Other people use this as a way to get away from everything,” Hanna said.

The Brookside Boathouse offers opportunities for people to take an ordinary Tuesday night in Albert Lea and turn it into something extraordinary.

The activities the Boathouse offers are extensive. It has something for everyone, Hanna said. Bikes, canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, Hamboards, croquet and bocce are all available for rent.

Hanna pointed out there are other options in town to rent similar equipment, but the Boathouse has enough inventory that it is able to accommodate larger groups of people.

He said not everyone in Albert Lea has room to store a kayak or a bike in their home. The Boathouse services offer a sensible solution for those who crave the outdoor lifestyle.

For one punch pass, you can take a croquet set to the lawn and play croquet.

The Brookside Boathouse is adjacent to

both the dog park and the community gardens in Albert Lea. Hanna offered a warning to those people hoping to spend large quantities of time at the Boathouse this summer — that gardeners might try to give you a free squash or excess tomatoes or onions.

Other recreational opportunities Hanna said there are many miles of biking, hiking, walking or running trails in the community — whether in town around the lake or out into the woods at Myre-Big Island State Park.

The Blue Zones Walkway offers a 5-mile trek around Albert Lea’s Fountain Lake that is popular for both walkers and runners.

The Blazing Star Trail is a winding,

paved trail that runs from Albert Lea Lake to Myre-Big Island State Park, a distance of approximately 6 miles.

Hanna outlined some of the other opportunities to adventure seekers this summer: • The state park offers stand-up paddleboards, canoes and kayaks that can be checked out, along with GPS equipment for geocaching in the state park.

“There are geocache sites all over Albert Lea,” Hanna said.

• Albert Lea’s rock gym is at Brookside Education Center.

“The people at the rock gym have a really strong environmental sense. And with that, everybody is enthusiastic so they will teach new people how to do things without judging their skill levels,” Hanna said.

Albert Lea has 24 miles of shoreline, and its deepest spot is 6 feet. It has a few accesses. One is at Frank Hall Park in Albert Lea and features a pier and a boat launch. Another with a dock and a boat launch is at a place along South Shore Drive called St. Nicholas, a former town. A third fishing spot is at the bridge over Shell Rock River on the south shore.

Boats can access Fountain Lake at Brookside Park or along Minnesota Highway 13 on Edgewater Bay. Popular spots along the shore are a fishing pier at Edgewater Park, the bridge by Dane Bay, the Hatch Bridge, the dam on Bridge Avenue and Katherine Island. Catfish are found in deep water near woods, and panfish can be found throughout the lake.

Walleye, northern and bass can also be found there.

Social events Albert Lea is packed with events in the summer months, many of which are designed to bring the community together.

From Wind Down Wednesday on the third Wednesday of every month in downtown Albert Lea to Thursdays on Fountain every Thursday, there is something for every taste.

Wind Down Wednesday will be July 19

and Aug. 16 on Broadway. A music, food, arts and crafts fair, the event has attractions for both children and adults.

Susie Petersen, Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director, said this year marks the fifth anniversary of the downtown festival, and it is sure to not disappoint with entertainment scheduled all day long. New this year, food trucks and home-based businesses are welcome at the event, along with artisans and craft vendors.

“Enjoy the bustling of our vibrant downtown Albert Lea and visit all the unique stores,” Petersen said.

Thursdays on Fountain is a new event this summer in Fountain Lake Park, featuring different musicians every week — except for the week of the Freeborn County Fair. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit and enjoy the music near the gazebo, or take a seat on the grand staircase that leads down into the park.

In addition to free music, Albert Lea Community Education canoes and kayaks will be available at Thursdays on Fountain for use for free on July 20 and Aug. 17.

For people interested in making some new friends, the Gather organization has a book club that meets the second Thursday of the odd months of the year. That group will next meet at 7 p.m. July 11 in the Intego conference room at 1206 W. Front St. to discuss “The Signature of All Things” by Elizabeth Gilbert. After that, the next book club meeting will be Sept.

3 Albert Lea women discover how to make the best choices

Each one of us has unique skin and hair colors. Finding the color palette that compliments your natural tones can bring out a special beauty. The right colors smooth and clarify the complexion. They minimize fine lines, shadows and circles and bring a healthy glow to your face.

The wrong colors, on the other hand, can make your complexion look pale or

muddy. They accentuate flaws and can even age your face.

Melissa Wittmer, a local cosmetologist, salon owner and certified colorist, specializes in color analysis and has teamed up with Albert Lea magazine and three Albert Lea women to demonstrate the transforming power of choosing one’s best colors.

Among the many color tips she provided, Wittmer noted that everyone “can wear every color in the rainbow.” It’s all about finding the right shade. She also said that for a polished appearance, a person’s color palette should be the foundation for their entire look — not limited to just clothing choices, but applied to makeup and nail polish colors as well.

Jenny Nelson lives in Albert Lea and is the administrative assistant for the Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department. She is also a Team Beach Body coach.

Find progress in 5 ways other than on the scale Shawn Bromeland and her husband, Bill, have been the owners/operators of Anytime Fitness in Albert Lea in Northbridge Mall for nearly five years.

For years, people have been using the scale as their main way to measure progress. We’ve hurled tears and profanities at this thing when our weight doesn’t move like we’d like. But the truth is, you are more than just a number, and there are many other ways to measure your physical progress that are actually better indicators of your overall health and wellness.

Before we dive into those, the first thing we need to touch base on is the subject of self-efficacy or self-worth. It represents your belief in your ability to do something. When your self-efficacy is high, you make bigger goals because you know you can crush them. When it’s low, it’s best to make small goals you know you can accomplish, and build from there. The more goals you can accomplish, the better you feel, and the higher you should aim the next time.

Studies have shown it is better in the long run to start small and build self-efficacy than to start with a big goal that is hard to accomplish, because if you start big and fail, you may not get back on the horse any time soon — or at all. The point is: Easy goals beget bigger goals! When you cross one off, move on to the next and you’ll start noticing progress in spades.

Here are some good things to try.

Chip away at a bad habit Find a habit that is hard to kick and then chip away at it. If you drink five Cokes a day, bump it down to four. It doesn’t matter if you’re still drinking Coke a month from now; what matters is that you’re drinking less, and your willpower is getting stronger!

Track performance In the gym, measure your performance in a training session or average workout.

Are you less fatigued than you used to be? Have you increased your weight in resistance training or completed a cardio task quicker? Think about some specific exercises you can track to gauge your progress as well. For example, see how long you can hold a plank or a wall squat. Or try to do as many push-ups as you can in one minute. Then try again each month and write down what you complete.

When you’re at home or work, there are other indicators of your improved fitness level. Is it easier to walk up the stairs? How about walking your dog or playing with the children? Are you generally more active around the house?

Are common tasks like lifting laundry bins or pushing the lawnmower easier?

Your average day should actually illuminate lots of ways you can progress.

Keep an eye on your clothes Fun fact: If you’re weight lifting regularly, you may lose fat and gain muscle, but your weight stays the same.

But your clothes will fit differently! How are those pants fitting? Do your clothes look oversized in photos? Break something out of the closet that you haven’t tried on in a while. You may be surprised.

Schedule a regular doctor visit There are many reasons to have regular contact with a primary care physician, but a simple benefit is seeing those key numbers change. How is your blood pressure? LOOKING BACK › Albert Lea city parks

Many people have enjoyed Central Park throughout its long history.

A.L.’s city parks have a rich history

When Albert Lea was platted in 1856, Central Park was identified as a public square. This space was the scene of political debates and band concerts. The landmark bandstand was demolished in 1938. The Jan. 12, 1938, issue of the Albert Lea Tribune reminisced, “… it has always been a popular place. On band concert nights people gathered around it by the hundreds, some sitting on the grass or benches, others standing up or walking around. You could always find a friend there, somewhere among the mosquitoslapping crowd.”

In 1912, the parks board changed the name of Spring Lake Park to Morin Park. Spring Lake was a stagnant body of water drained in the early 1880s. The name change came with new plans for the park. The board suggested the grounds be a

combination of park and play grounds. An outdoor gymnasium, a wading pool for small children and a set of play apparatus would be some of the features of Morin Park.

Fountain Lake Park was created as part of a Works Progress Administration project in conjunction with the North Broadway boulevard project. Prior to the dedication of the park and the boulevard, an article in the Aug. 6, 1937, issue of the Tribune reported, “The completion of the boulevard, which now connects North Broadway with Fountain Street, brings to a close the big project which has transformed the end of North Broadway from a semi wild, ramshackle section of lakeshore into a beautiful park, with band shell, fountain, walks, lookout over the lakeshore and a concrete boulevard completing the semicircle above the park itself.”

Fountain Lake Park construction was completed in 1935. The North Broadway boulevard and retaining wall were finished in 1937.

Regular grooming is a must painful combing to remove the mats. If you ever choose to shave your long-haired/double-coated dog, their hair may never grow back the same, so think twice before your choose to shave your dog and talk to the groomer.

Adding a professional groomer to The Pet Authority in May has been a real eye-opening experience for me. So many of us, including myself, forget how important regular grooming is for our pets, both at home and with the groomer. Here are some great grooming tips to work into your regular routine with your pet.

Regular brushing How often and what type of brush all depends on the type of hair coat.

Short hair requires minimal brushing with a rubber curry comb. Medium hair coats need weekly brushing with a double/ single rake comb. Long hair coats need daily brushing with a double rake or straight comb. For doodles, use a pin brush and slicker daily. Proper brushing will keep your dogs (and cats) mat and tangle free. If your dog does become severely matted, your only option is to shave your dog completely or have your dog endure hours of

Bathing How often you bathe your dog will all depend on the time of the year, activity and length of their hair coat. During the summer, all three of my dogs get a bath every two to three weeks, sometimes more often if they are playing in the mud or swimming in the pond. During the winter, I bathe about every 4 to 6 weeks. Brush your dog prior to bathing and use a dog shampoo (never a human shampoo as our skin and hair type are completely different than our pets) and rinse twice. Not rinsing well enough can cause dry, flaky and itchy skin.

I like to use my hands to wash my dog as it allows me to find fleas or ticks, spot skin irritations or unusual lumps. Then I take a rubber curry comb and scrub to help remove even more dead hair.

Nail trimming This is often one of the most overlooked

grooming aspects by many pet owners, due to fear of cutting the quick (blood vessel) in the dog’s nail. What many dog owners don’t realize is that long toe nails change the natural alignment of leg bones which adds torque or twisting to the joints, resulting in possible injury and unnecessary pain for the dog. The average dog needs their nails trimmed every three to four weeks. My dog Beau runs enough outside that he wears his nails down and I don’t ever have to trim them. Reggie, on the other hand, spends most of his day sleeping, so I need to have his trimmed every three weeks. If you hear a “click” on the floor when your dog walks, it’s time for a nail trim. Get yourself a good clipper or visit your groomer regularly for proper nail trimming.

Exercise and treats If your dog is not a big fan of brushing, bathing or nail trimming or just simply will not sit still, taking a nice long walk to release some of that energy will make the entire process much more enjoyable for both you, your groomer and your dog. And always end each of the above tasks with some of their favorite treats for a job well done.

Sodium — it’s in more than just the salt shaker

Many of us know we should limit our sodium intake to help improve heart health. Additionally, our kidneys, liver and many other areas of our body tend to function better when we eat lower sodium foods. To keep our hearts and bodies healthy, we often avoid using a heavy hand with the salt shaker or even avoid salting our food altogether. This habit is certainly beneficial since sodium is the mineral in table salt that makes our heart work harder than it needs to.

However, according to the American Heart Association, over 75 percent of the sodium that we eat on average actually comes from processed, prepackaged and restaurant foods. In other words, just keeping the salt shaker off the kitchen table most likely isn’t enough to keep your sodium intake below the recommended 2,300 milligrams per day.

What types of processed foods in particular tend to pack the greatest amount of sodium? Deli or cured meats, including sausage, sandwich meats, hot dogs or brats, and canned meats, tend to be one of the highest sources. Prepackaged foods such as boxed macaroni and cheese, pasta or rice with seasoning or sauce mixes, canned soups, and frozen entrees

or pizzas also contribute a high amount of sodium. Even though they don’t necessarily taste salty, even breads, tortillas and other grain products can contain a significant amount of sodium.

When it comes to restaurants, including sit-down or fast food, there are meals that contain well over the maximum recommended amount of sodium for the entire day! If you’ve ever felt a bit bloated or especially thirsty after dining out, that may have been why.

Although it’s not easy to stay below 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, there are some strategies that may help you. Focusing on minimally processed foods such as fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables is one great way to do this.

Canned fruits and vegetables are a budget-friendly option as well; however, make sure to look for the “no salt added” canned vegetables. When it comes to breads and other grain products, compare nutrition labels and search for those that have less than 200 milligrams of sodium per serving. Fresh or frozen plain meats including lean ground beef or turkey, skinless chicken breasts, low sodium canned tuna, eggs, unsalted nuts, natural nut butters and

dried legumes or canned beans that are “no salt added” are all excellent protein options. More natural, hard cheeses such as provolone, cheddar, mozzarella or Swiss tend to be better options than heavily processed cheeses or cheese sauces. Although cottage cheese is a nutritious food, it can contain 300 to 400 milligrams of sodium per half cup serving, so do watch the portion size.

We become accustomed to the flavor of salt, so cooking differently is a helpful method to reduce sodium intake as well.

Experiment with a variety of fresh or dried herbs and spices, such as garlic or onion powder, basil, rosemary, ginger, cumin, thyme, cilantro and many more.

Lemon and lime juice also add great flavor without contributing sodium.

By paying greater attention to the nutrition facts labels, choosing foods more often that are fresher and less processed, and limiting dining out at restaurants, it is possible to reduce the amount of sodium in your diet. Most people will benefit in some way from making these diet modifications, whether your goal is to treat current health conditions or prevent future ones.

What does conservative investing mean to older versus younger investors?

If you’re a certain age, or getting close to it, you might hear something like this: “Now that you’re older, you need to invest more conservatively.” But what exactly does this mean?

For starters, it’s useful to understand that your investment preferences and needs will indeed change over time. When you’re first starting out in your career, and even for a long time afterward, you can afford to invest somewhat aggressively, in stocks and stock-based investments; because you have time to overcome the inevitable short-term market drops. At this stage of your life, your primary concern is growth — you want your portfolio to grow enough to provide you with the resources you’ll need to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.

But when you finally do retire, and perhaps for a few years before that, your investment focus likely will have shifted from accumulation to preservation. And this certainly makes some sense. Even though you may spend two, or even three, decades in retirement, you actually have

many shorter time frames for withdrawing money — that is, selling investments — from your retirement accounts, such as your 401(k) and IRA. In fact, you may be taking withdrawals every month — and you don’t want to be forced to sell investments when their price is down.

Consequently, you’ll want a portfolio that’s less susceptible to market downturns. This means that you may need to reduce the percentage of stocks in your investment mix and increase your holdings in investments that have less growth potential but offer greater stability of principal, such as bonds.

If you follow this formula, you will have become a more conservative investor. But this evolution —from aggressive to conservative — isn’t that simple, or at least it shouldn’t be. If, as mentioned above, you are retired for two or three decades, you will have to deal with inflation. And even at a relatively mild 3 percent annual inflation rate, your purchasing power will decline by about half in just 25 years. This is a real threat to retirees, who, unlike active employees,

can’t count on increases in earned income to overcome increasing costs of living.

Given this reality, you will have to find your sources of rising income in your investment portfolio. One possibility: Dividend-paying stocks, some of which have increased their dividends for many years in a row. Still, like all stocks, these dividend payers can lose value from year to year, and they can also reduce, or even eliminate, dividends at any time. In other words, they aren’t risk-free — which brings us back to the question of how conservative of an investor you can really afford to be when you’re retired.

In the final analysis, there’s no simple answer. On one hand, you probably shouldn’t be as aggressive an investor as you were when you were much younger and still working. On the other hand, if you were to primarily own certificates of deposit and U.S. Treasury securities, you might face the prospect of outliving your money.

L Albert Lea Scott Hanna grew up in Albert Lea, graduated from the University of Minnesota and has been back living in Albert Lea since 1987.

When asked if I would write an article as to why I love Albert Lea, I immediately said yes, for I was sure that would be an easy task. As I sit to begin writing, I find myself struggling to define love. I like many things about our community and hope that reviewing my likes I will find the love.

• People here always step up to help those in need, whether it be financial, physical or just an encouraging word.

• We have parks everywhere for everyone and the dedication it has taken to maintain them.

• I run into retired teachers in town, many of whom had a hand in helping to make me who I am.

• The lakes and the year-by-year improvement in the water quality that I have seen from the hard work of people that care.

• My children have had the opportunity to grow up in an environment similar to what I experienced as a boy here.

• The trails, the dog park, the Boathouse, the pool, the community gardens and all the other physical 58 | ALBERT LEA | JULY/AUGUST 2017

opportunities that Albert Lea has to offer.

• My family and I can go anywhere in town safely.

• The small-town feel.

• The way the scenery here changes at least four times a year.

• Traffic slows for ducklings.

• I can have everything that is offered in our state with just a short drive and yet still live in a town this size.

• The county fair and how it is like a multi-class reunion because so many people come home for it.

• So many people still refer to Albert Lea as home no matter where their lives have taken them.

• The history, the present and the future here.

• We raise our kids and send them off into young adulthood, hoping they will get out and see the world, so that they may at least appreciate the blessing they have received by being raised here and with the hope they will choose to live and raise families here.

• Community activities that bring us together like Let’s Play, The Big Freeze, Albert Lea Floats and Wind Down Wednesday, to name a few.

• Someone’s word still matters here.

• Someone doing the right thing is not a surprise but an expectation.

• Education and hard work are valued.

• Someone passing away who is less than 100 seems too young and no matter what age seems too soon.

• Common courtesy is still common here.

• The feeling that I can make a difference here.

• I’m not the only one who values these things.

• My parents wanted the best for me and my siblings and gave us these opportunities.

• Together we have made Albert Lea what it is, and the we I’m referring to is every person who has said we should do this and then has.

So what I’m really saying is I like it all, I want to have it all and I do have it all.

The reason I love Albert Lea is we have it all.

There is no single individual who can really say I made this happen or I am the reason Albert Lea has this. Every significant accomplishment in our community is a result of we, us, you and I; the one small act followed by another and another we have created what I love — thank you!
