EXECUTIVE UPDATES

PRESIDENT REPORT

I am excited to begin my term as president of Alberta Holstein. I look forward to getting to know the members from all the clubs in the province.

I would like to thank the Country Roads Club for hosting a successful AGM in February which was well attended. The weather was awesome for the farm visits and the whole event was enjoyed by all.

The Board would like to thank Lee Simanton for his nine years of service to the board and wish him well as he serves in other areas within the Holstein industry. Also thank you to Andrew Wildeboer for the years as president, Andrew will remain on the Board as past president. A hearty welcome to Jan Vandebrake as the new board member and Fred Hofstra who will begin his term as vice president.

Congratulations to Mosnang Holsteins on winning the 2022 Alberta Breeder of the Year award and to Gert and Sonja Schrijver with the President’s Club Cow winner, Marsfield Denzel Kimmy.

Congratulations to Don and Wendy Chalack and family, Wendon Holsteins, with winning their third Master Breeders Shield. Fellow breeders will have an opportunity to celebrate with them on April 15 in Montreal at the National Convention Master Breeder Gala. The Western Branches will be putting forward a revised resolution regarding making the Westerner Dairy Showcase a National Show, we encourage members to register to vote for this during the AGM! ( Resolution is on the following page.)

As we anticipate spring planting and with the show season beginning; the Alberta Holstein Association Board wishes everyone a successful growing and showing season. Congratulations to all the Alberta exhibitors who participated at the BC Spring Show. I hope to be able to meet everyone at the various planned events and shows in the coming months throughout the province.

PLEASE PROVIDE SUPPORTING STATEMENTS BELOW (MINIMUM 1, NO MAXIMUM)

Whereas due to the vast geographical size of Canada, the existence of a national show in eastern Canada limits western provinces from participating;

Whereas, for reference, the distance from Charlottetown, PEI to Toronto is about 2600 km and again, for reference, it is about 2600 km west to Brandon , Manitoba and an additional 2100 km to Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Whereas the health and welfare of all animals is of top priority and long -distance trips are especially difficult on an animal's well -being;

Whereas the trip to participate in the yearly national show requires around 12 stops to milk the cattle on the trip

Whereas a national show is once every 4 years in Western Canada. Western exhibitors must travel extremely long distances with unpredictable winter weather to the Royal in Toronto to participate at a yearly national show;

Whereas the cost of transport and expenses is at or higher than $50,000 for a round trip from Chilliwack, BC to Toronto, ON

Whereas the Westerner Dairy Showcase is already running therefore there will be no additional costs to Holstein Canada;

Whereas the western provinces have high -quality animals and a national show would recognize these animals on a national stage;

Whereas the show in Western Canada be he ld in the same regard as a national show in eastern Canada (i.e. points to All-Canadian nominations);

Whereas there is opportunity to encourage western participation in more shows and also in promoting the Holstein breed throughout Canada.

PLEASE PROVIDE CONCLUDING STATEMENT BELOW (MAXIMUM 1)

Be it resolved that Holstein Canada designate the Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer a National Show

NATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORT

Holstein Canada has hired a new CEO. The press release will come out April 7. She will be attending Holstein Canada AGM and convention which will take place in Montreal April 12-15. If you can’t make the AGM in person, I would encourage everyone to sign up for it virtually, please use your right to vote!

This year started good for Holstein Canada as we are ahead of revenue and below budget on expenses for the first 3 months. The conneXXion mobile app will be launched April 5th it will be an efficient and effective way to submit registrations and/or genotype right from your phone.

In March BC had avery successful spring show congrats to all exhibitors and organizing committee. Also in March there was a very successful Western Canadian Dairy Seminar where the Holstein Canada booth was well attended.

Classifiers will be back in Alberta early May, as always if anyone has questions please contact me anytime. Happy seeding!

FIELD SERVICE REPORT

Clarence Slingerland

The new Connexxion App will be released at CDX April 5th. It is currently being tested by beta users. Many of them are operations in Western Canada.

Classifiers will be out in Alberta in May, for any clubs it will be time to plan those barn meetings!

WCDS was a great success, lots of traffic and good talks with producers at the Holstein Canada booth!

Toby will be in Alberta starting after Easter for approximately 5-6 weeks. Just a reminder that field service is available to all Holstein Canada members, as well as non members in hopes of creating future members. Having a field service rep come on farm, and visit at industry events creates a perfect opportunity to answer questions, talk about services and help resolve issues while also serving as a learning opportunity for both parties.

ADVERTISING & MARKETING REPORT

After the cancellations of the last two years, the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar was once again held in Red Deer, and with lots of help from Toby, Alberta Holstein was able to operate a booth at this event in conjunction with Holstein Canada. New banners and a tablecloth were ordered for the booth this year. The plan is to have this booth set up at both the Alberta Dairy Congress and the Alberta Youth Dairy Show.

With the new show season beginning, just a reminder to send in any show results to Amanda Hehli so she can post them on the website and social media. If you have any pictures, they would be appreciated also.

Mosnang Holsteins started in 1980 when Heini & Ruth emigrated from Switzerland to the Rimbey area. Now their oldest son Markus and his wife Amanda along with their four kids, Wyatt, Adair, Georgia & Sawyer take care of the day to day operation of the farm. We are milking around 110 cows in a step up parlour. We make all of our own silage (barley, haylage, corn) and buy in our dry hay and straw.

In 2022, we had 24 VG 2 Year Olds, 9 VG-86 and 1 VG-88 in the US. We were also very proud to achieve our first EX-95 classification with Mosnang Solomon Liquify in the summer of 2022after she was sold to Westcoast Holsteins. Our herd classification is now 9 ME- 10 EX- 83 VG- 24GP.

We had several Superior and Longtime Production awards throughout the year and 7 Star Brood Cows, 1 CAHC production winner with Mosnang Wickham Ladybug, BCA 315-498-312. As well we had 1 Super 4 Award from Mosnang Doorman Lady Love. Our current RHA BCA is 226-263-233.

We continue to work towards our 1st Master Breeder Shield as we have been in the top 10 in our category for 5 years now!

2022 was a big year at the shows, as we went to a lot of them throughout Western Canada! Starting with the National Convention in Saskatoon where we had Jr. Bred & Owned Champion with Mosnang Miranda Lambert. We also bred 3 class winners there, Mosnang Little Sister, Mosnang Unix Lipstick & Mosnang Unstopabull Karma (owned with Lucky Hill & Lovholm).

In June we showed at the Alberta Dairy Congress where we had 1st Jr. Breeders herd and were Junior Premier Breeder. Next was the CAHC Mid-Summer Classic where Wyatt and Adair also had their first 4-H Achievement day. Mosnang Believe in me was Reserve Champion that day.

In July the kids once again showed their 4-H animals at the Alberta Youth Dairy Show. We are lucky that it is close to home being in Rimbey!

In August we sent 4 heifers out to Manitoba for Team Alberta at WCC, the kids did a great job with their animals throughout the week and Levi & Alyssa Congdon ended up with Grand and Reserve Champion with Quality Genie Lauren and Mosnang A2P2 Living the Dream. Nicole Verhoef was 1st in her class with Mosnang Miranda Lambert. If things had gone as planned the heifers would have met us out in BC as we were showing at the Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong that week. Sadly, the liner was involved in a collision on the way out to BC, as many of you know, and the heifers were lost in the accident along with the lives of the drivers. It was devestating news to get the day we were packing up the trailer to head out, but we were committed to making the trip and still managed to make the best of the show. Our kids had fun showing their calves and we had Junior Champion with our Holstein, Mosnang Chief Darla & Jersey, Mosnang Dell Never Give Up. While it was difficult it was also amazing to see the resillience of Team BC and the BC breeders as they still made the show happen and were able to spend time together following the accident.

2022 Alberta Breeder of the Year- MOSNANG HOLSTEINS

In October Mosnang Bred animals were shown down in Madison at the World Dairy Expo. Mosnang Unix Lipstick and her dam Mosnang Solomon Liquify placed 3rd & 5th in their classes, which was exciting to watch! A partnership cow we own with Crestomere and Stanhope Wedgwood also placed well in the Jr. 3 class, Crestomere Sidekick Valkyrie. She was also Grand Champion at the Vancouver Island Show this summer.

Later in October at the Westerner Dairy Showcase Mosnang Chief Darla (owned with Garritt Schmidt, WI) did well once again winning Reserve Junior Champion. Our Junior Breeders herd was also 1st in class. Two partnership cows also did great at the Westerner, New Mars Tatoo Araluen (owned with New Mars) was 2nd in her class and Kozak Alligator Erica (owned with Stanhope Wedgwood) was 1st.

November at the Royal WInter Fair was certainly the highlight of the year when Mosanng Unix Lipstick was 1st Jr. 3 and went on to be Reseve Intermediate Champion! Later that day Mosnang Solomon Liquify along with her two daughters, Unix Lipstick and Bridgsetone Live Wire (6th Milking Yr) placed 2nd in the Breeders Herd class! Mosnang Holsteins was also 2nd Premier Breeder at the Royal. An unbelievable experience! A huge thank you to Westcoast Holsteins for taking such great care of these cows and getting them to this show level!

With the great show results in the fall we also had several nominations, 8 bred or owned All-Westerns, 3 All-American and 5 All-Canadian nominations.

A high numers cow we sold a few years back, Mosnang Jacoby Legendairy also produced a son that we co-bred with Blondin Sires that went into AI, Blondin Legend. It is exciting seeing this line of breeding doing well.

Markus is a director on the Central Club and is on the organizing committee for the Westerner Dairy Showcase. As well he is an official judge and was able to get away in April to judge the California State Show.

Heini finished his term with Alberta Milk in 2022 , he has dedicated a lot of years of service to the organization and enjoyed it greatly! Amanda is on the staff for Alberta Holstein as the Social media /Publication rep. We are also becoming more involved with the Udderly Unique 4-H Dairy Club as our kids get older! Markus also continues to be a mentor for the Alberta WCC team.

In a year that had some extreme highs and lows, we’d like to thank the Central Club for the nomination for Breeder of the Year, it is an honour!

Youth Feature- Emma Van Steekelenburg and her involvement with YDLI, partially sponsored by Alberta Holstein.

“My name is Emma Van Steekelenburg and I farm with my parents on our family’s farm, Quintus Dairy.

For the past year, I was part of the Holstein Foundation Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI). YDLI is a year-long, three-phase leadership program based out of the United States that focuses on building communication, teamwork, and advocacy skills. I was one of 2 Canadians to be apart of Class 12.

In February 2022, I went to Fort Worth, TX for Phase I of YDLI. There we learned about our own leadership styles, using improv to communicate, and adapting to change.

During Phase II, we were challenged to use the skills we learned during Phase I in various projects and activities in our home communities. One of the required activities was volunteering for a leadership position. I volunteered to be an Alberta Milk Ambassador. This was probably my favourite activity because of all the opportunities that I got from being an ambassador. I got to represent Alberta Milk at the Calgary Stampede and I got to work with Dairy Farmers of Canada on a few projects, including a photoshoot for future DFC promotions and another project to be released later this year. For my community presentation, I was the dairy presenter at Farm Credit Canada’s Outstanding in your Field Day in Brooks. I presented on The Journey of Milk: From My Farm to Your Table. I presented to 24 groups of grade 4 students and a high school group. I was able to talk about the ways my farm produces safe and high quality milk for consumers and how the processing plants process milk into milk products that end up on grocery store shelves for consumers to buy and consume in their homes. I completed some non-farm consumer interviews. I asked some staff from my high school about their consumer habits and their beliefs on anything from GMOs to hormones and antibiotics in their food to milk and meat alternatives. The most surprising thing I learned was that the public can be so disconnected from agriculture, even if they are from an agricultural community. However, some people are still open to learning more about where their food comes from. I also completed some personal development goals, including journalling, networking at a conference, and hosting farm tours for people in my community. I believe the most rewarding part of Phase II was how much my selfconfidence grew during the year. I forced myself to go outside of my comfort zone to complete my goals, and I took on opportunities that I probably never would have said yes to in the past. I learned a lot more about myself during Phase II, especially what I am capable of accomplishing.

In February 2023, I returned to Fort Worth for Phase III of YDLI to hear from more guest speakers and to reflect on what we did during Phase II. I got to reconnect with my YDLI classmates, and I learned about using key points when talking to consumers about dairy, the US Ag policy update, and identifying and managing stress in our lives. I was also one of a few participants who got to present on my highlights from Phase II. I extended my trip in Fort Worth this year with some of my YDLI classmates so I took part in the JFK Assassination Tour in Dallas, watched a rodeo at the Fort Worth Stockyards, and checked out some other sites in Fort Worth.

My participation at YDLI would not have been possible without support from the Alberta Holstein Association and the Green Acres Holstein Club so I would like to thank them for their sponsorship over the past year.”

ALBERTA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION Newsletter 13 YOUTH REPORT

Fred Hofstra

Changes were made to update and improve the travel grant process through Alberta Holstein, the new guidelines are as follows:

In support of Alberta breeders attending out of province shows, the Alberta Holstein Association is pleased to offer a travel grant for eligible animals.

Alberta breeders are welcome to apply for the Alberta Holstein Association Travel Grant. A total of $6500.00 will be made available based on the following criteria:

1. The above funds are decided and disbursed based on the number of applications received;

2. To qualify the animal must be Alberta bred and leave our province to attend a show. The animal is not required to return to Alberta.

3. In order for an application to be considered complete the requested information must be provided. Application forms are available on the Alberta Holstein website.

4. Maximum allotment of applications per farm: five animals per show per farm with a maximum of funds per farm as well. The pay-out is the same for heifers and cows.

5. Deadline is the responsibility of the breeder and must be received by email to albertaholstein@gmail.com no later than November 30 at noon on any given year.

The updated apllication is available on the website: Forms Tab---- Travel Grant

We encourage the clubs to utilize the official and aspiring Judges Lists for upcoming 4-H and Club shows this season!
