EXECUTIVE UPDATES PRESIDENT REPORT Andrew Wildeboer

It is my honor and privilege to be the newest President of the Alberta Holstein Association.

So many things have changed worldwide, since the North Club hosted Alberta’s AGM in February. Thank You to the North Club for hosting & for rescheduling the day to enable the dairy community to attend Don Wright’s funeral. He was a strong supporter of everything dairy & a prominent industry friend.

Congratulations to the Crest family of Skycrest Holsteins, for being awarded Alberta’s 2019 Breeder of the Year. Also, congratulations to the Schrijver family of New Mars Dairy for the President’s Club Cow winner, New Mars Sanchez Eastern EX90-5E with a lifetime production of 125 000kgs to date. A very big thank you to Bob Reck & Joe Folkerts for their contribution & commitment to the AHA board.

Welcome, to Randy Slomp & Fred Hofstra, who have joined our team.

I’m very proud to be part of the Canadian dairy family. While many industries have pushed the pause button, we continue to do what we have always done...make a safe & nutritious consumable product. I’m thankful that I’m able to work alongside my family on the farm. Even though separation & distance is difficult, I believe that being able to continue to do what we love, with the people we love, in the places we love, makes us a special & gifted community. I look forward to seeing many of you at events & activities, when life assumes normality again. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to contact myself or any other board members. We always like to hear from you. Until we meet again, stay smart!

Canadian Holsteins have always been an incredible resource, with a great capacity to adapt – they will continue to be a key asset to contributing to the prosperity of our dairy farms across the country. I am very proud to be part of this industry and to work with a team so committed to Canadian dairy farmers.”

We are very excited to introduce Vincent as our incoming CEO. The Board of Directors established very clear criteria for the rigorous selection process to identify a CEO to take us forward in this changing world. Vincent meets all of our objectives,” states Gerald Schipper.

As I write this Holstein Canada has got some very exciting news to share with the appointment of a new CEO: Vincent Landry!

Fluently bilingual with an in-depth dairy background, Vincent Landry brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Born on a Holstein farm in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec (and a Holstein Canada Junior member from an early age) and a Holstein breeder until very recently, Vincent has held key positions in the industry. These include over a decade of senior management positions in Sales, Marketing and Communications for two artificial insemination companies. Before his AI career, Vincent worked in animal nutrition.

Following his post-secondary education, Vincent started his career as a Field Service advisor for Holstein Québec, the largest Branch of

Field Service support is available for all Holstein Canada members and non-members in hopes of creating future members. Morgan Sangster (our Holstein Canada Field Service in Western Canada) has visited many farms in Alberta in January and February in which Cattle As-

sessment was performed, as well as NLID retention issues discussed, and registration and classification being promoted. Morgan also attended all our Holstein Club’s AGM’s in which she gave short updates to producers on NLID, Junior Program, workshops, and Compass. In Early March Morgan together with Michelle from Holstein Canada did a Compass workshop with SAHC (see picture), they also did presentations at several Colleges and Universities in which genetics, genomics, and breeding improvement tools were discussed.

As we find ourselves in a unique time in history, I hope everyone is managing well and staying healthy. The Alberta dairy industry is faced with a decrease in quota and with a reduced need for cows and heifers it may become difficult to market good quality cattle. Due to social distancing requirements many shows and seminars have been postponed or cancelled. The Alberta Holstein Association booth will remain in storage until it is safe to resume normal operations.

STAND ALONE PRICING

Alberta Holstein is always interested in your photos and stories from your farm. Due to the cancellation of many shows we would love to see what our youth are doing with their calves at home. Please forward any photos you many have to Amanda to be uploaded onto the Alberta Holstein Facebook page. This is great way to keep in touch with other youth and breeders throughout the province.

YOUTH REPORT Sue Crest

As of now the Alberta Youth Dairy Show will continue as planned from July 21-23 at the Rimbey Agrim Centre.

Regarding WCC 2020, the Manitoba planning committee will be waiting until May to make a decision on the fate of this year's WCC event in conjunction with the rest of the interprovincial committee.

As for now: Judges have been confirmed.

Rollyview 4-H Club Club Reporter: Alice Keuper

Since my last report we had a workshop for public speaking at the Staub family home in Edmonton, we learned about how to write a speech and we practiced impromptu speeches.

On February 1st we had our public speaking event. Everybody did a great job and it was great to listen to all the speeches. Silas DeLange was first for the Juniors, Isabella Staub was first for Intermediate and Tyson Rietveld finished first for the Seniors.

At the end of February we had another meeting, this time at DeGoeij’s farm in Wetaskiwin. We talked about our record books and also about judging, we had to judge stuffed animals and give reasons! We had a great time.

In March we participated in the online Hoards judging competition, everybody including parents could participate.

Currently all other 4H activities are postponed due to the Covid-19 virus but we are hoping our Achievement day in July will still be happening!
