EXECUTIVE UPDATES PRESIDENT REPORT Willem Vanderlinde

I would first like to say thank you to the Green Acres Holstein Club for organizing a great AGM in Febraury. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. Congrats to all of the 2018 award winners, Wendon Holsteins for Breeder of the Year, Chubanna Holsteins for President’s Club Cow and Don Chalack on receiving the Marj Atkins Achievement award.

Thanks to everyone who voted for National Director, I would like to thank Debbie Hofstra for putting her name forward, we all share the same goal in moving Holstein Canada forward.

As I am writing this I am just back from the Green Acres Holstein Club awards night which was a great night.

I would like to welcome Rolf van Benthem to the Alberta Holstein board and Tim Hummel is back on the board as director at large.

Also this past week I was out in BC for their Spring Show. Congrats to Zimmer Holsteins for Reserve Grand Champion with Zimmer Krusader Ava. A reminder to exhibitors who took cattle out to the show that travel grants are avaialble!

It was great to have Larry Arvay as director, thank you for your time and commitment as well.

In March, along with Vice President Andrew Wildeboer, I attended the Branch Relations meetings at the Holstein Canada office. There were great meetings sharing ideas and concerns with members from other Branches.

In April I will be going to the National Holstein Convention in Charlottetown, PEI. I hope to see lots of Alberta members there to celebrate Marsfield Dairy in getting their Master Breeder shield.

As I move into my new role as National Director I would like to say a big thank you to Orville Schmidt for all his time and commitment.

There is a lot of thanks to be said, this makes organizations great.

Looking forward to the coming years events, hope to see everybody there.

2018 Master Breeder Winners Are Coast-to-Coast Brantford, Ont. – The announcement of the Master Breeder recipients has become an annual tradition at Holstein Canada, and this year is certainly no exception. Holstein Canada is pleased to announce the 21 Master Breeders who will be honoured at the 2019 National Holstein Convention Master Breeder Gala in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

Of the 21 breeders who received exciting news today, 66% (14) are first-time recipients of a Master Breeder shield, while the remaining are previous winners. The winners come from coast to coast, with breeders in six provinces receiving the Shield! Eight breeders are from Ontario; five are from Quebec; three are from British Columbia; three are from Nova Scotia; and one each from Prince Edward Island and Alberta.

Since its beginning in 1929, the Master Breeder program has become the most coveted Holstein Canada award. Including this year’s winners, 1069 Master Breeder shields have been handed out in the award’s 89-year existence. These breeders are recognized for having mastered the art of breeding balanced cattle – high production and outstanding conformation with great reproduction, health and longevity. Congratulations to the 21 2018 Master Breeders who have joined the ranks of the most elite breeders across Canada!

2018 Annual General Meeting We started off the morning with the AGM where updates were given by the respective committees and the Budget approved for the 2018 year. It was great to hear from our industry partners CDN, Holstein Canada and CanWest DHI. We appreciate Harry van Der Linden President of Holstein Canada and Anne Louise Carson CEO of Holstein Canada joining us for our AGM. Following the meeting we enjoyed a quick lunch and bundled up for the bus ride to tour Green Prairie International. We were greeted by the van Hierden’s and taken through the plant to tour their forage export business as well as their newest venture into forage pet food products. The tour was well received, and we thank Green Prairie International for welcoming us through their doors.

We joined together once again in the evening for an excellent meal among friends. The banquet included a few awards Breeder of the Year, President’s cow and Marj Atkins achievement award. The night concluded with the illusions and wittiness of Trevor Moore our entertainer.

2018 ALBERTA BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Central Alberta Holstein Club- WENDON HOLSTEINS Wendon Holsteins is honored to be representing the CAHC as the nominee for Alberta Holstein Breeder of the Year.

Wendon Holsteins was established in 1976 by Don & Wendy Chalack. Currently, Wendon Holsteins is operated by Don & Wendy, Scott & Jillian Hastie (son-in-law and Daughter) & Egbert Korenberg. Also daughter Linsey helps out at shows and on the farm when she can.

2018 CURTIS CLARK ACHIEVEMENT AWARD- DON CHALACK

Don Chalack of Wendon Holsteins, Red Deer County, Alberta, was named the 2018 winner of the Curtis Clark Achievement Award on November 9th during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ont. Chalack is the 32nd recipient of this award which was established by the Alberta Holstein Branch in 1988 to honour the late Curtis Clark of Acme Holsteins, a respected Alberta Holstein breeder, cowman and showman.

A breeder, showman, marketer, judge, volunteer and industry leader, Don Chalack checks all the boxes when it comes to what the Curtis Clark Award stands for. Chalack was raised on his family’s Master Breeder winning Ultra Holsteins farm at Cochrane, Alta. In 1976, Don and his wife Wendy purchased a farm near Innisfail, Alta., and established Wendon Holsteins. There, along with their three children, they have gone on to breed and develop a herd that has earned Holstein Canada Master Breeder awards in 1995 and 2008. Their son, Logan, farmed with them until his death in June 2016. The couple, along with their daughter Jillian and son-in-law Scott Hastie, currently operate Wendon Holsteins in a 60-cow, free-stall robot barn with 12 tie-stalls. Another daughter, Linsey, helps on the farm whenever she can. Six grandchildren, and Logan’s wife Charity, round out this close-knit family.

An astute cowman with a keen eye, Don Chalack made numerous purchases early in his career which produced a number of show winners. Today, he and his family are best known for the success they have achieved with homebred Wendon animals. By building on such deeppedigreed cow families as Wendon Triump Alaska (Ex-91-2E-6*), Wendon Gibson Prudence (Ex-92-5E-7*), Wendon Starbuck Renette (Ex3*), and Wendon Triumph Divine (Ex-94-4E-13*), the Chalacks have bred to date 110 Excellent and 406 Very Good cows, plus 58 Star Brood cows. The Wendon herd is presently 90% homebred and consists of 28 Excellent, 49 Very Good and five Good Plus cows who average 11,200 kg milk with 4.1% fat and 3.2% protein.

Don, 66, started showing cattle as a youngster with his parents, Margaret and the late Sam Chalack, and brothers David, Tim and the late Tom. He has continued to show ever since, exhibiting at all the major shows in Western Canada, as well as having had cattle shown many times at the Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo. While more of a “back of the barn type of guy” now, Don was a great showman in his day. Wendon Holsteins has won many champion rosettes, Breeder’s Herd classes, and All-Canadian, All-American and All-Western awards.

Among the Chalack family’s most cherished achievement was winning the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners, and having the first prize Breeder’s Herd, at the 2016 National Convention Show in Calgary, Alta. Among Wendon’s recent show winners are cows like Wendon Goldwyn Diode (Ex-96-3E), grand champion at Westerner Dairy Showcase in 2018 and British Columbia Spring Show and Calgary Dairy Classic in 2017 and Honourable Mention All-Canadian mature cow in

2017; Wendon Golddust Dividend (VG-88), intermediate champion at Westerner Dairy Showcase in 2017 and reserve intermediate champion at Calgary Dairy Classic in 2018; and Wendon Destry Rainy (Ex-94-3E), grand champion at Alberta Dairy Congress in 2016 and a member of Wendon’s Honourable Mention All-Canadian Breeder’s Herds in 2016 and 2017. Chalack has also merchandised a number of animals who have realized showring success for their new owners. This list includes Wendon Dempsey Prude (Ex-95), All-Canadian and All-American 4-year-old who was reserve grand champion at World Dairy Expo and grand champion at the Canadian National Convention Show and B.C. Spring Show in 2016; Wendon Goldwyn Allie (Ex-95-2E-2*), 2012 AllCanadian and All-American 5-year-old; and Wendon Windbrook Mercy (Ex-92-USA), 2015 All-American junior 2-year-old.

Chalack is an Official Judge and has judged shows in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Colombia. He has been a member of the Dairy Cattle Committee at Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer, Alta., for 40 years and also served as the committee’s chairman. He was one of the founders of the Western Canadian Classic (WCC) Junior Dairy Show. He has also been a director and president of the Alberta Holstein Branch, a director of the Central Alberta Holstein Club, a 4-H club leader, and a member and chairman of Holstein Canada’s Type Classification Advisory Committee. He has been a mentor and friend to many. The Chalack family received the Alberta Breeder of the Year award in 2004, the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder award at World Dairy Expo in 2017, and were this year’s Breeder of Distinction at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic.

Chalack is a quiet, modest man of few words whose breeding of great Holstein cows with deep pedigrees and show winning type speaks for itself. He is the “complete cowman”. He is extremely grateful for the continuous support of his wife Wendy who he says is the “backbone” at Wendon Holsteins.

Don Chalack is humbled and honoured to be added to the list of Curtis Clark Award winners. Curtis Clark was a neighbour and mentor to Don and his brothers as they grew up. The first four purebred Holsteins at Ultra Holsteins were purchased from Curtis Clark and his partner Lloyd Pickard.

The Curtis Clark Achievement Award is presented annually at the Royal to the Canadian dairy cattle exhibitor who is respected for his ability, sportsmanship and dedication. The winner, who is chosen by former recipients of the award, receives a gold belt buckle as a personal keepsake and has his name engraved on the distinctive Clark trophy that bears a bronzed version of Curtis Clark’s hat.

AGRIFOODS COOPERATIVE- BACK FROM NEAR EXTINCTION Creative Disruption in the Big Food World

Nancy Korva - Senior VP Dairy and CEO Maheb Nathoo are quietly proud of the Fable (Farm to Table) range of innovative products that Agrifoods has been successfully weaving into the Canadian dairy products scene.

Agrifoods – Dairyland/Dairyworld, CADP and NADP are all names that are well-known to Alberta producers. The sudden, unexpected end to the ambitious growth plan in 2001 was a bitter conclusion most would rather forget. While no one can rewrite history, it is possible to create a new future – if one has the support, vision and tenacity to not give up. Agrifoods Cooperative is such a story.

Agrifoods Cooperative is an amalgamation of several entities, The Fraser Valley Milk Producers Assoc., the Northern Alberta Dairy Producers, Central Alberta Dairy Producers and the Dairy Producers Co-Op Ltd (DPCL) of Saskatchewan. While the BC and AB organizations were all operating in the early 1900’s, it was the Saskatchewan creameries that gave Agrifoods the legitimacy to claim 1897 roots. It was in 1992 that the Coop began operating under the corporate name ‘Dairyworld Foods’, producing Dairyland brands.

The following year, a joint venture with Agropur making yogurt, created Ultima Foods. Times were good as they expanded the business across the west to secure a major share of the Canadian processing pie. But the ambitious plans ended in 2001 with the liquidation of Dairyworld Foods and related processing plants. Agrifoods would retain its interest in Ultima and the milk hauling business.

From Survival to ‘Thrival’ After a decade of surviving under the radar, Agrifoods emerged anew in 2011. CEO Maheb Nathoo, gives due credit to the board who hung on during this discouraging time, “It would be easy to disband, but so hard to establish this organization again.” Agrifoods generated $1.5B at its peak in 2001, but the real story today, is of the ‘little dairy that could.’ Revenues in 2011 were at $20M generated entirely from the milk hauling business, but by 2016, with a renewed vision and identity, Agrifoods revenues grew to $180M! Nathoo stages the vision of Agrifoods with neither the slick style of a car salesman or the polished pitch of a politician – what he presents is a credible strategy backed by facts, figures and real-world examples with an earnest, believable persona. Having experience as VP Finance back in the Dairyland days gave him a solid understanding of Agrifoods business, further building his experience outside of Agrifoods as part of the team leading Earth’s Own and Happy Planet brands. When he returned to Agrifoods in 2012, he could see the changing food landscape – Big Food was losing ground to local, fresh, boutique brands. Milk as a commoditized product was very price sensitive and had no loyalty. Recently, Happy Planet was ranked 25th and Earth’s Own, 46th, among BC’s Top 50 Most Influential brands (BC Business Magazine) – it has been a good move to bring them into Agrifoods!

Small, Nimble and Creative Nathoo knew that maximizing Class 1 milk was important, which required enticing new consumption. He understood the expectations of Millennials and the need for connecting with and engaging consumers with their food. “We wanted relationships with consumers through our brands, we wanted excitement and variety.” He cited the examples of Starbucks and Chobani as ‘disruptors’ in the marketplace.

You don’t have to be the cheapest when the consumer wants what you are giving them. He holds up a 750ml bottle of Happy Planet Chocolate Milk as evidence of their success in creating a delicious high-end milk product that routinely retails over $5. As a brand, Happy Planet is well established and was ranked ‘5th most-loved brand’ by those aged 18-34 (Millennials). “We can engage our consumers with more innovative products that give them variety, closer to the way nature intended,” Nathoo explains. The Meadow Fresh plant in Port Coquitlam,BC is able to produce a wide variety of specialty products including the Happy Planet Creamery products. An opportunity to take over Organic Meadow Dairy in Guelph in 2015 was also a win – turning red ink to black in just nine months. “Micro dairies allow us to be flexible and fill niche markets, usually with better margins,” smiles Nathoo, knowing he has out-manoeuvred the big players. “We can add fun, excitement, creativity and be progressive and sustainable which are all important to the new consumer we are appealing to.”

The three dairy brands (Happy Planet Creamery, Meadowfresh and Organic Meadow) provide a local, family-farm feel, with ‘organic, grass-fed and heritage breed’ descriptors in their stable of products. “Cream-top milk is making a come-back because there is a nostalgic appeal to it. People believe in sustainability and our heritage breeds milk is growing,” Nathoo shares with confidence.

The Evolution Continues Outside of the intriguing array of dairy products Agrifoods produces, they have a robust segment of food and alternate beverages to provide a sizable and competitive product line to compete for retail shelf space. In all cases, they strive to be creative, different and specifically appealing to their fans with attributes of healthier, sustainable, or artisanal. Taking advantage of niche unmet wants in the marketplace seems to be their strength.

To optimize the investments in their processing plants, they continue to ‘co-pack’ products for other companies, such as ‘Simply Orange’ juice, for Coca Cola. Their plants are modern – permitting handling of high or low acid products. They can produce ESL (extended shelf life) products which can be shipped further and have a longer, stable shelf life.

Going forward as an organization, they hope to grow their membership base beyond their current 2700+ in the west, having opened their area to Manitoba and Ontario with provision for one delegate. “We are Canadian owned by Canadian farmers and we believe the more members we have, the stronger our voice,” Nathoo states. Agrifoods Cooperative sees a broader-visioned future and seeks to align themselves with other cooperatives for mutual strength. In line with their values, they support the development of the next generation of industry leaders – through scholarships, sponsoring Leadership programs, and recently becoming a ‘Proud Partner of 4-H’!

In a changing world where dairy-detractors are vocal and damaging, it’s encouraging to see farmer organizations claiming some of the post-farmgate business, making producers a little less vulnerable to commodity economics.

Classification Changes Aware of the growing industry need for improved Rump structure, the Classification Advisory Committee researched a change, which was later approved by the Board of Directors, in the proportion of Rump in the final classification score, changing it from 10% to 12%. It is accompanied by a decrease in the final weighting of Mammary System from 42 to 40%. Within the Mammary System scorecard, the weightings have been changed to recognize profitability; Rear Attachment Width will change from 10% to 12%, and the weighting of Rear Attachment Height will be reduced from 12% to 10%.

MOOS ON THE MOOVE 4-H Report Jantiena Hoeve

This year for the Moos on the Moo-ve 4-H club has been a busy year so far. We ended off 2018 with our Christmas party which was held at the bowling alley.

For Seniors first was Rolynn Bikker, second was Christiena Hoeve, third Rainne Backwith, fourth Marina Hoeve, fifth Kyle VanDijk, sixth Micah Rottier.

We started the New Year with a public speaking workshop which was held on January 18 at the Hoeves.

The clipping and judging workshop was held on March 9th at Baas Dairy. We learned how to clip calves and how to judge a dairy cow.

For community service this year we decided to play games at Keir Care. We had an enjoyable time playing games with the seniors.

Then on February 8th, we had our annual public speaking competition which was at the Mellowdale Hall. Everyone did very well including the cleavers!

Coming up we have our Regional judging competition on April 27th. In the morning we will be judging consumers choices and in the afternoon we will be judging various livestock.

We have had an eventful and enjoyable year so far!

For juniors first was Naomi Rottier and second was Wyatt Baas.

For intermediates first was Emma VanDijk and second was Gelsey Bikker.

Our club year is well under way for the south. Green Acres 4-H Club held their first meeting in early October. Membership includes 17 members, 5 cleavers and 4 leaders. Registration of senior members is at 5, we have 4 intermediates and 8 junior members.

We have had a busy year so far! The Rollyview Club had our organizational meeting at the de Goeij’s where we had a great farm tour and lunch! This year our club has grown we have 16 members and 7 cleavers! We elected our executive:

Elections were held at the start of our year, with Sylvia Slingerland as President, Simone Huisman as Vice president and Alana Slingerland as secretary. Larissa Slingerland was elected as treasurer, Ella Slomp as club reporter and Emma Huisman as historian.

Our club has participated in several learning opportunities, including our most recent, a visit from Morgan from Holstein Canada.

We look forward to our clipping and showmanship workshops in April, hosted by the Slomp family and presented by Henriette and Leighton. Volunteer presenters make learning fun and we really appreciate their gift of time. All the learning is preparing us for our local show on May 25th at the Lethbridge Exhibition.

We had a fun club outing at Laser Tag in Edmonton. Then in December we had our first Judging Meeting at Rietveld’s. We started off our new year with a public speaking workshop at the Staub’s that prepared us for our public speaking competition that was held in February at the Cloverlawn Hall. Everyone did a great job!

The members that advanced to the District Level were Isabella Staub for Junior, Paige Whalen for Intermediate and Tyson Rietveld for Senior – however due to other commitments Tyson couldn’t attend. We had a record book and dairy science workshop. The next few months will be very busy with Judging, Highway Cleanup and a hanging basket fundraiser. Before we know it our Achievement Day will be here, which this year will be on July 11th in conjunction with the Northern Alberta Holstein Club Show in Millet!!

**WCC 2019** The Alberta Western Canadian Classic (WCC) Committee is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 35th edition of Western Canada’s premier junior dairy show. This successful program is open to youth from the four western provinces and will be held in Olds, AB from August 19-24, 2019.

This program offers over 100 Western Canadian youth, between the ages of 12-21, the opportunity to take part in a program filled with many fun activities throughout the week as well as cattle clipping, dairy science test, cattle judging & oral reasons, herdsmanship & stall decorations, showmanship and conformation competitions.

The purpose of this competition is to provide an opportunity for our youth to improve their skills in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, public speaking and dairy cattle husbandry. During this event, participants will have the opportunity to build and grow their network while stimulating and maintaining interest in the agricultural industry. This remarkable program provides an opportunity for agribusinesses to participate in the development of youth for a great future in agriculture.

As 2018 host province, our Alberta volunteer committee is set to raise $70,000 of cash and in-kind contributions from agribusinesses and dairy producers to fund this year’s event. In return for sponsorship, you will receive recognition through online and in-print advertising, signage and special mentions throughout the show as well as awards banquet tickets and other benefits.

SHOW REPORT Joe Folkerts The Tier I Judging School will be held in conjunction with the Alberta Dairy Congress on June 7th. Judge to be announced.

The Calgary Dairy Classic will be held April 18-19th.

Alberta Dairy Congress will be held June 6-8th in Leduc.

We are planning to have a Tier II Judging School in the fall. More details will be announced later on.

We hope to see everyone out supporting our Judging Schools and Shows.
