EXECUTIVE UPDATES NATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORT Willem Vanderlinde

As we enter into the fall season and Covid-19 is slowing down and we’re able to get back to normal life, it was really good to see 4-H and Holstein clubs having their shows again. It was good to get out to see good cows and to catch up with good people, it was exciting to see the Alberta Dairy Congress happening in Rimbey.

Congrats to all those who participated.

Some Association News: 1) In order to support our Members in Western Canada who are dealing with unprecedented drought and fire, Holstein Canada has decided to waive all administration fees for producers in all four Provinces.

2) The COVID-19 situation has, and continues to, limit our ability to organize and present events. Branches have also suffered as a result.

In order to help mitigate the financial impact on the Branches, the Board of Directors of Holstein Canada approved special financial assistance in the amount of $25,000 for the Branches that did not qualify for the various government assistance programs.

4) A survey on the regionalization of classification services was conducted in British Columbia to determine what their expectations are and to obtain feedback on potential options.

The results will be presented to the Board and producers in September. Based on the responses we received, Holstein Canada would like to launch a pilot project during the next regular round in early 2022.

5) A new Risk Committee has been created at Holstein Canada. The Risk Committee’s mandate will be to identify various threats and their impact on the Association. Computer threats and rapid changes in the Dairy Industry will be on the agenda. The committee is composed of National Directors Ben Cuthbert, Benoît Turmel, Angus MacKinnon and Manager, Business & Technology Solutions, Aaron Neely.

3) Following the unexpected announcement of the cancellation of the Toronto Royal, Holstein Canada has decided to hold a National Show in November 2021. After reviewing many options and various sites, Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec is the location that has been chosen. The event will be held from November 16 to 20, 2021. Details will follow soon.

The 2021 Annual General Meeting in Review Brantford, ON – July 8, 2021 – The pandemic situation of the past year and a half has given Holstein Canada the opportunity to demonstrate its ability to adapt and modernize in this fast-paced world.

This year, Holstein Canada hosted a virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was an inclusive formula in many ways. The virtual nature of the event allowed members of all provinces, ages and languages to participate in the AGM and take part in discussions.

This year marked Gerald Schipper’s last AGM. Mr. Schipper served as President of the Holstein Canada Board of Directors from April 2019 to July 2021 and as Director for Ontario since 2013. Holstein Canada would like to thank Mr. Schipper for his dedication and his involvement with the Association and the breed. During his two terms as President, his leadership has ensured that Holstein Canada will continue to play an important role in the future of dairy farming in Canada.

Twenty resolutions (2019-2020) were presented at the AGM; the results of the votes Vincent Landry, CEO and Gerald Schipper, outgoing president. are available on our website. Other resolutions were also dealt with i outside of the AGM. The provincial branches have done an outstanding and trustworthy job. Let’s not forget that, with the new process for submitting resolutions, some have been sent directly to Lactanet. This process strengthens our partnership and we trust their willingness to make things happen. One of the highlights of the AGM was the shared commitment between the breeds and Lactanet to release more production data to the public in 2022.

The release of a first-class Medium Density panel will provide accurate and improved genomic evaluations combined with milk proteins, recessives and other value-added data. Breeders can also expect to see improvements in the way they submit their samples, and in the way they receive and use their results as part of their genetic strategy.

Chris Bartels: New Hire at Holstein Canada The program was developed by various members of the association, including Chris Bartels, Holstein Canada’s new Genomics Services Manager. Chris grew up on a dairy farm in the Niagara region. He graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree and has subsequently held various positions in the AI industry in both solutions and sales roles. He is known for his comprehensive approach to genetic planning for the benefit of the producer helping them to achieve their specific goals.

FIELD SERVICES REPORT Rolf Van Benthem

Field Services Report: By Rolf van Benthem Classifiers are coming again to Alberta starting September 6th. Always an exciting time to see how your 2YR olds will score, and to see if any of your older cows have improved. Good luck to everyone! Also keep an ear out to any of your local clubs that might be hosting barn cow meetings/classification nights.

These are great chances to meet up with your fellow breeders as well to learn more about Holstein Canada’s classification system.

We have been using the new ear tags in our industry for a while now. We are hopeful that the new tag design is functioning better, so that we have less ear tag losses. If you have any concerns or feedback on the new tags feel free to contact Morgan or myself.

I would like to remind everyone the importance of registration of your animal with Holstein Canada and the benefits it will give your farm. Registration has the following benefits: • • •

1. Traceability and Age Verification o Holstein Canada submits animal identification numbers and birth date information to the national repositories, DairyTrace and Agri-Traçabilité Québec Inc (ATQ).

2. Identification Standards o Holstein Canada's registration process meets all animal identification standards as set out by the Canadian Quality Milk (CQM) on-farm food safety program.

3. Manage Inbreeding Levels o Generally speaking, inbreeding is undesirable as it reduces genetic variation and results in decreased performance. o Registration provides the best option to manage inbreeding. Studies have indicated that increased inbreeding has a negative impact on milk production and productive life.

4. Marketability o Selling an animal with proper identification and pedigree information gives buyers more confidence and increases the value of the animal. o Registered animals appeal to a wider range of buyers including potential export opportunities.

7. Cost-Effectiveness o The cost to register an animal is quite low relative to the value and return on investment over the lifetime of the animal.

Easy and Convenient Ways to Register o Holstein Canada offers 4 easy and efficient ways to register an animal in Canada. o Members can submit animal registrations: ▪ on the internet via their online account; ▪ through electronic registration application (ERA) through on-farm software; ▪ via an accredited filing business such as CanWest DHI or Valacta; ▪ or by submitting registrations hardcopy through mail and/or fax.

It has been several months since the Alberta Holstein booth was able to be set up at any shows in Alberta. We, as a board were thankful that we could share the accomplishments of Alberta breeders in Rimbey. Our hope is that it will be on display at the Westerner in Red Deer in October. Plans are underway to once again print the Alberta Holstein Association breeder calendar for 2022.

There are still a couple of months available, if you are interested please contact Amanda to book your page or advertisement.

Once again, we will be printing a new Breeder directory in time for the 2022 Convention in Saskatchewan. This is a large undertaking to compile the correct information and details. Amanda will be emailing each breeder to confirm the correct contact information. Your assistance with this will be greatly appreciated. Rollyview 4-H Dairy Club

By Alice Keuper After not being able to meet in person, we have had a busy couple of months! In May we started with our highway cleanup fundraiser, and we also sold flower baskets. It was good to be together after only seeing each other online for so long!

We had a clipping and showmanship clinic at Detimdale Holsteins at the end of June to get everybody ready for our show! On July 8th we had our Achievement Day in conjunction with the NAHC show in the Hay Lakes Multiplex. We all had a great day and we learned lots!

Our 2021 Grand Champion is Justin Schrijver, Reserve Grand Champion is Dorian de Lange and honorable mention is Izzy Staub.

Also 7 of our club members went to the Alberta Youth Dairy Show in Rimbey.

We are looking forward to the next year in 4H!

2021 ALBERTA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM CAN BE USED AT:

Any officially recognized post-secondary institution.

YEAR OF STUDY:

must have completed at least the first year of university/college; and must be returning to school within the calendar year.

PROGRAM OF STUDY:

any field of study will qualify but a post-secondary program in/or related to agriculture, science or business with a demonstrated interest in dairy might be preferable.

NUMBER & VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIPS:

Up to 4 (four) worth $500 each. Scholarships will be awarded in February 2016 at the Alberta Holstein Association Annual Meeting.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Must be a regular or junior member of the Alberta Branch Holstein Canada, or a son/daughter of a member Selection will be based on farm involvement, community participation, extra circular activities and academic standings.

The student’s most recent post-secondary transcripts, a resume and required essay must accompany application form.

The required 500 to 1000-word essay must explain farm involvement, volunteer experience along with future employment ambitions.

6 (Six) judges from members at large will select winners.

No individual will be eligible for a second award.

JUDGING AND SHOW REPORT Clarence Slingerland

A slow start to the show season as shows were either cancelled or postponed, but then thankfully clubs and 4H got things pulled together to put on a show!

On July 20-22, 2021 Alberta Holstein was once again able to sponsor the Alberta Youth Dairy Show judged by Mark Sweetnam and Alberta Holstein Picnic held in Rimbey, AB. Lots of energy and optimism was shown by all of the clubs and committees who put together a great show!

On Aug 9-13, the Alberta Dairy Congress was held in Rimbey, AB. We welcomed Judge Jesse Bradley to judge the junior show, Judge Steve Fraser to be the official at the Tier II judging school, a Herd Builder Sale later that afternoon, followed by a Jersey Show judged by Kevin McGriskin.

The next day was the B&W and R&W show, also judged by Kevin McGriskin. AB Holstein was proud to hand out Best Bred & Owned awards!
