Back : Andrew Wildeboer, Lee Simanton, Tim Hummel, Chad Crest, Fred Hofstra, Rolf Van Benthem, Clarence Slingerland, Willem Vanderlinde Randy Slomp Amanda Hehli, Benita HummelEarning the Marj Atkins Achievement Award at this year’s Al berta Holstein Branch Annual Meeting was Everett and Marylee Simanton of Crestomere Holsteins, Ponoka, AB, the down-toearth, respected couple whose lifetime of work with youth and dedication to the Alberta Holstein industry has been a labour of love.
Ev Simanton didn’t come from a family with a lot of purebred business knowledge. In fact, it wasn’t until Ev joined 4-H in 1963 that the farm’s first purebred Holsteins were purchased. But he loved the Holstein cow and dreamt of having a highly regarded purebred herd. Ev took over the family farm in 1971. He and Marylee married in 1981. “Marj and Norm Atkins basi cally helped us start breeding better cattle by letting us pur chase older cows from their Continental herd at Leduc for very reasonable prices,” says Marylee.
Through hard work and determination, the Simantons soon achieved success, both in the barn and at the shows. In 1993, they acquired the calf, ACME STAR LILY EX-2E-8*. Lily became a three-time Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion (1997-98-99), World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion (1998) and multiple AllCanadian and All-American winner for Simantons and later partners Continental Holsteins and Alta Genetics. “Not being raised around dairy cattle or belonging to 4-H,” says Marylee, “I remember sitting at cow shows and watching fitters so I could learn and then help Ev fit our cattle. I’m humbly proud to say I fit Lily at the first shows she won!”
A long line of other animals have garnered show ribbons and/ or become brood cows for the Simantons like CRESTOMERE BROKER LISA VG-87-2* (Reserve All-Canadian 4-H Heifer Calf and Reserve All-American Winter Calf in 1995); the three-gen eration line of WEEBERLAC TRIUMPH VICKI VG-88, CRASDALE DUNDEE VICTORY EX-92-3E-12* and CRESTOMERE LOU VICTO RIA EX-94-2E-4*; CRESTOMERE GIBSON LOTTERY EX-90-3E; and daughters of RIETBEN BAXTER CECELIA EX-94-15*.
Named Alberta Holstein Breeder of the Year three times, Ev and Marylee were joined on this journey by their three chil dren: Jessica (husband Michael Lovich, Lovholm Holsteins, SK);
Sandra (husband Jon Kingdon, Charlyn Farms, ON); and Lee (wife Lisa), now part of Crestomere where they milk 100 cows with two robots in a free-stall barn. “Seeing our kids achieve in 4-H was very special to us, especially to Ev for whom seeing his kids’ names engraved on the Provincial Dairy 4-H Trophy meant a lot. And now to see them all involved and contribut ing to the dairy business is gratifying,” comments Marylee.
Both Ev and Marylee have given generously of their time to the Holstein industry, community and church. They are active members of the Central Alberta Holstein Club where Ev was a Director and President. He has also been an Alberta Branch Director and member of the Westerner Dairy Showcase Dairy ButCommittee.itiswith
youth that the Simantons have made their great est contributions. They both coached baseball and hockey. Marylee was very involved in the Ponoka Figure Skating Club and one year sewed 132 costumes. They have hosted over 30 Agricultural International Exchange students on their farm. “I love the 4-H motto, ‘Learn to Do by Doing’, and the 4-H pledge,” says Marylee, a 4-H leader for many years. “The best way to ex emplify that pledge, as a leader, was to teach kids everything we had learned and then help and encourage them. I look at people like Andrew Wildeboer, Marcus Hehli, Sarah Congdon and Nancy Friesen and their accomplishments in the dairy in dustry and maybe in some small way it started through our local 4-H clubs.” She continues, “I don’t know how many years I volunteered in 4-H, that wasn’t important. I just wanted to con tribute to a world and industry that afforded Ev and I a decent living to raise our family. And Ev was always there in the back ground too working his butt off. Once he hauled 21 calves to the Olds Show just so every 4-H member could have a Group of Three. We always had young people travel with us to the various Holstein shows. We loved it.…the cattle, the work, the excitement, anticipation and the humour of the young.”
Marylee served on the Western Canadian Classic (WCC) Board for 17 years. “Great memories were made, and not always to do with the cattle,” she laughs. “It is gratifying though to think that as leaders we may have had a positive influence on someone participating in WCC. Achieving, failing, trying again and then finally achieving are confidence builders. Confidence builds character and strength. As leaders, our job is to be there to pick them up and give them the support to try again.”
The Simantons are the seventh recipient of the Marj Atkins Award established in 2013. As Ev gratefully says, “We appreci ate this award, perhaps more than any other, because it was a surprise to be recognized for something we loved doing… helping others, particularly youth…in honour of a lady, men tor and friend Marj Atkins. We are humbled.”

BREEDER OF THE YEAR
Mars Dairy- The Schrijver Family
grew up at Donovan Holsteins in Manitoba. Since earning a Master’s degree in geology, he has spent his entire professional career in the oil and gas industry where his entrepreneurial spirit has led him to start and sell nine successful companies. His current company, Style Energy Ltd., has business activities in Alberta, Alabama and Texas.
Accepting a Master Breeder shield at the Holstein Canada Convention in April for their successful RockyMountain Holsteins breeding program were, from left, Doug and Ann Blair, Glenn and Linda Hockley, and David and Joanne Chalack.
RockyMountain Holsteins’ time in the business may have been short, but what an enormous impact and legacy this Co chrane, AB, based herd, established in 2003 by Doug Blair, Dr. David Chalack and Glenn Hockley, made during a span of 13 years. In April, Holstein Canada recognized the great breeding bloodlines and lasting influence of this renowned herd by pre senting it a cherished Master Breeder shield in the herd’s first year of eligibility for the award.
Success, while never assured, seemed almost preordained for this herd when you consider the three respected businessmen and Holstein enthusiasts behind the RockyMountain Holsteins (RMH) name.
Doug Blair was raised at the Langview Holsteins farm in British Columbia and was part of his family’s three Langview Master Breeder wins (1967, 1994, 1999). He had a 50-year career in the A.I. industry (1964-2014) that included being the founder/CEO of Western Breeders Service and then CEO of Alta Genetics Inc.
Dr. David Chalack grew up on his family’s Ultra Holsteins farm in Alberta which was named a Master Breeder in 1984. After obtaining a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1975 and part nering in a veterinary practice, he joined Alta Genetics in 1989 where he has held various management positions and is cur rently the International Sales Manager for Japan. Blair and
The idea for RMH came up one year while the three men were attending the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. “We all owned Holsteins, were friends, lived close to each other geographi cally west of Calgary, and had partnered before on several animals. We all came from dairy farms that had successful purebred Holstein operations. And we all had a passion for Holsteins,” says Chalack. With the Chalack family’s Ultra dairy farm available, and suitable for a small purebred operation, the men decided the time was right to gather all the ani mals they currently owned, and were housing from British Columbia to Quebec, together at one farm under their own management. “One of our first steps,” recalls Hockley, “was to discuss how to consolidate our animals. That meant putting a value on each animal. At the end of that session, coming out as friends, shaking hands and saying we would go ahead was an indication to me that we were going to be successful.”
The trio picked RockyMountain as their prefix. “We thought it was a good strong name and fit the geography of where our farm was located,” explains Blair. “And being a Holstein historian, I had noticed that some of the strongest prefixes all seemed to start with the letter R.” The farm’s logo, fea turing Moraine Lake framed by the Rocky Mountains and a head shot of RAINYRIDGE JED DOLORITA EX-93-2E-16*, 2001 Reserve All-Canadian Senior 2-Year-Old who eventually had eight EX and 23 VG progeny, further enhanced their brand.
The first female bred by RMH was born on November 4, 2004.
RMH’s goals were many. They achieved them all. “We wanted to establish an entity that was recognized around the world. We wanted to be recognized as a contributor to the breed and industry in a meaningful way, with a strong reputation of integrity and doing what we said we would do,” states Chal ack. “While we wanted to own and breed cattle that had the potential to show, we also wanted ‘true balanced’ genetics,
Chalack are both Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame induct ees and contributed to Alta Genetics’ Master Breeder shield in Glenn2001.Hockleycattle with high production and high type,” says Blair. “We had those two combinations of cattle. When genomics came along, we had some success there as well. When we sold cattle, we wanted to sell the kind that would be well accepted.” “We also wanted a herd that was well managed,” adds Hockley. “And, of course, our ultimate goal was to win a Master Breeder shield.” Almost all of RMH’s Master Breeder points were earned by breeding stock who sold through the eight RockyMountain High Sales held at the farm between 2005 and 2015, with Syl vanside, Lucky Hill, Westcoast, Earincliffe, Cedarwal and Wis selview the leading contributing herds. “Seeing how success ful people have been with cattle with our prefix is a source of great satisfaction for all of us,” say the three partners. The Roc kyMountain High Sales, with their western theme and great hospitality, were always “a breath of fresh Rocky Mountain air”. Held in July, they were timed so people could also take in Cal gary Stampede and visit nearby attractions such as Banff and Lake Louise. “The sales were an opportunity for us to show case our farm and genetics and bring together our Holstein fraternity friends,” says Hockley. In addition to their own cattle, the sales included many consignments from other breeders. “We had a lot of support from British Columbia, both as con signors and buyers. Stanhope-Wedgwood consigned to every single RMH sale,” points out Blair. Collectively, the eight Rocky Mountain High Sales grossed over $8.3 million and averaged $9366 on 889 head. The dispersal sale in 2013 (when Blair re tired from RMH) averaged $10,426 on 89 head and remains the highest averaging Holstein dispersal ever held in Western Canada. Topping that sale at $265,000 to Stanton Bros. Ltd. of Ontario was the calf, ROCKYMOUNTAIN UNO CHEYANNE VG85-14*, the dam of STANTONS CHIEF, one of the most popular sires in the world today.
“We are proud to have bred over 60 EX cows,” says Blair. “We have bred 20 cows with over 100,000 kg milk lifetime, includ ing the current 15th highest lifetime milk producer in Canada, ROCKYMOUNTAIN SUPER LEITA EX-90-3E-16*, at Stantons.” Leita has 129,363 kg milk and is the dam of seven EX progeny, including ROCKYMOUNTAIN LOTTOMAX EX-94. Another long timer, ROCKYMOUNTAIN SUPER TEATRO EX-94-6E, has 123,564 kg milk lifetime to date and was Alberta President’s Club Cow Winner in 2020 for Innislake Dairy Farm. Sires contributing the most Master Breeder points for RMH include Goldwyn, Super stition, AltaBaxter, Shottle and AltaIota.
A crowning achievement for RMH came in 2011 when they had the first prize Senior Best Three Females bred by exhibi tor at World Dairy Expo, a group that was later voted Unani mous All-American Senior Best Three Females that year. Two Expo class winners, ROCKYMOUNTAIN TALENT LICORICE EX-
95-USA-8* and ROCKYMOUNTAIN GOLDWYN TRISHA EX-932E-5*, anchored that herd and were joined by ROCKYMOUN TAIN GOLD WINTER EX-94.
In 2011, RockyMountain Holsteins had the first place Senior Best Three Females bred by exhibitor at World Dairy Expo, a group which went on to be the unanimous choice for All-Ameri can as well that year.
Licorice had sold as a calf for $5000 in the 2007 RockyMoun tain High Sale and changed hands a few times before selling for $420,000 in the 2011 International Intrigue Sale in Que bec to an American syndicate. All-Canadian and All-American 4-Year-Old in 2011, Licorice was also All-Canadian, Reserve All-American and Intermediate Champion at the Royal Winter Fair as a Senior 3-Year-Old in 2010. Trisha, who sold through the 2009 RockyMountain High Sale and had five EX daughters at Beckholm Holsteins in Ontario, was Reserve All-American Junior 2-Year-Old in 2011 and All-Canadian and All-American Junior Yearling in 2010.
A number of deep-pedigreed cows contributed in a major way to RMH’s breeding success. Among them:
* RAELAND LEDUC WILHELMINA EX-92-2E-17*. 2004 Reserve All-Canadian Junior 3-Year-Old and 2005 Calgary Spring Show Grand Champion, Wilhelmina was a finalist for Holstein Canada “Cow of the Year” in 2013. Her family earned the most Master Breeder points for RMH. Dam of seven EX and 17 VG daughters, three of those outstanding daughters by Gold wyn (WINTER, WINNE EX-93-7E and WINNIE EX-91) comprised RMH’s nominated All-Canadian Breeder’s Herd in 2012. Hock ley and Chalack are currently partners in a granddaughter of Wilhelmina, ROBELLA BYWAY WHIPLASH EX-90.
* IRWINDALE LEDUC MACY EX-95-4E-8*. A two-time Royal class winner and three-time Westerner Championship Show Grand Champion, Macy was All-Canadian Senior 2-Year-Old in 2003 and All-Canadian 4-Year-Old in 2005. She had three EX and 16 VG daughters and made over 101,000 kg milk life time.
* GEN-I-BEQ GOLDWYN SECRET VG-87-20*. A Red Factor cow who was Holstein International’s 2011 “Red & White Cow of the Year”, Secret had six EX and 23 VG progeny.
* NORTHERN-GLO MACINTOSH-RED EX-90-9*. Honourable Men tion All-American R&W Junior 2-Year-Old in 2004, Macintosh had one EX and 12 VG daughters.
* HAUTPRE RUDBECKIE REGIMENT RED EX-92-3E-2*. A two-time Royal R&W Show class winner and 2008 Royal Reserve Grand Champion R&W, Rudbeckie was All-Canadian R&W Mature Cow in 2008, Reserve All-American R&W Junior 3-Year-Old in 2006 and dam of one EX and two VG daughters.
It was always a “team” effort at RMH. Assisting the partners were a great staff headed by Farm Manager Ron Churchill and his wife Gail. “Ron and Gail did an amazing job of looking after the cattle. You could go into that 50-cow tie-stall barn anytime, any day, and the place was ready for visitors. Cow comfort was number one. Many months we had the lowest Somatic Cell Count in Al berta,” the owners say. Jackie Rathwell was the farm’s adminis trator. “We also employed many young men and women from around the world who, not only became ambassadors for our farm, but became successful in their own countries and remain life friends,” adds Hockley.
Following Blair’s retirement from the partnership in 2013, Hockley and Chalack carried on with RMH until July 2016 when they sold the herd to Westcoast Holsteins of British Columbia. Labour, uncertainty over the future of supply management, the farm’s close proximity to Calgary, and the cost of compet ing in the genomic world all factored into their decision to exit the business. Chalack and Hockley as RMH, and Blair under his Langmont prefix, continue to own and invest in high quality
“RMH Days” are over, the memory of “going out to the barn and it always being a show place” remains vivid, not only for its owners, but the countless Holstein and non-farm guests who visited this exceptional herd. For Doug Blair, David Chalack and Glenn Hockley, the success of the RockyMountain Holsteins partnership, the friendships they made, and the con tinued legacy of the animals that carry their prefix, will forever remain a magnificent testament to the accomplishments of this Master Breeder herd.

With another busy summer season nearing it’s end, we can look back on some of the accomplishments of our youth over the past few months. Every 4H Club was able to hold their achievement day, including for the first year, Mountain View 4H Club which held theirs on July 6th in Olds.
The Alberta Youth Dairy Show was once again held in Rimbey on July 12-14 with over 50 4H members participating with the help of countless volunteers who helped put everything together. The Grand Champion Calf was Thornspyc Attraction Diona-Red shown by Kristy van de Brake of the Udderly Unique Dairy Club with Reserve Grand being shown by Eleanor Slingerland of the Green Acres Club with her calf Kenbert Doorman Enjoya.
And if that wasn’t enough, after two years of cancellations, an Alberta contingent of 4Hers was off to the WCC in Brandon, Mani toba on August 23-27th to compete against the other 3 western provinces. The Alberta team showed itself well with Alyssa Congdon winning Grand Champion with Quality Genie Lauren and Levi Congdon winning Reserve Grand with Mosnang A2P2 Living the Dream. Silas De Lange finished second in Showmanship and other Alberta team members did very well in the judg ing and clipping competitions. On a sad note, It was tragic to hear of the of the accident that happened the day after WCC was completed. Three young lives were lost. Also, the Grand and Reserve Champion calves at WCC and the Grand Champion calf from the Youth Show in Rimbey perished along with other calves that were being transported out to BC. The affects are felt across pro vincial boundaries and with both young and old and everyone involved in the dairy industry. Condolences to all who are dealing with the losses caused by this accident.
Rollyview 4-H Club
We have had a busy summer! In June we helped out with the Break fast on the farm at El-Shaddai dairy in Leduc county. We had a fun time showing off some calves and talking to people about dairy farming and 4H.
On June 29th we had a showmanship workshop at Detimdale Dairy to get ready for our Achievement day. Most of our members brought their calf along and we got some great practice in!
Then on July 6th we had our Achievement day 2022 at the Millet Agriplex! We had our show together with The Moo’s on the Moove 4H club from the Barrhead area. It was a great day where we all learned lots and had fun. Our cleaver Jaxson Folkerts was leading the Grand Champion of the show: Kozak Amazon Gold Red!
After our Achievement day, a lot of our members participated in the Alberta Youth Dairy Show. They had a great time, learned lots, and did great as a group! We placed 2nd aggregate overall and 2nd in stall competitions.
On August 19th we hosted an ice-cream scoop fundraiser night at the Marble Slab Creamery in Leduc. It was a completely new experi ence for most of our older members to be scooping and serving ice cream, but we had a great time doing it and promoting a dairy product at the same time!
To finish our busy summer, we had 5 of our members go to the Western Canadian Classic in Brandon, Manitoba. They did amazing and helped team Alberta win first place!

Each year since 2016, WCC has presented an award based on personality, leadership, team work and work ethic in memory of Logan Chalack of Wendon Holsteins, a past WCC participant and Holstein breeder. This award is cho sen by the WCC participants – each province nominates a team member and then the provinces cast votes to decide a winner.
Senior Overall Judge is now the Jamie Donohoe Memorial Award in hon our of Jamie Donohoe a past WCC Participant and Holstein Breeder from Donfield Farms, Brandon, Manitoba and sponsored by Donfield Farms, the Donhoe Family.
Daryl Barkman a longtime friend of Jamie’s presented the award for the first time and had these words to share.
“Before we get to the presentation of this award, I’d like to share a few words on behalf of Jamies family and his many friends in the dairy industry.
This memorial award was created to honor the memory of Jamie Donohoe, an exceptional cowman, official Holstein Canada judge, and a strong sup porter for the future generation of dairy farmers.
Jamie never shied away from sharing his knowledge of the Holstein indus try and encouraging young dairy farmers. He could leave a lasting impres sion as he was never afraid to speak his mind, often vocalizing what many others were silently thinking!
With Jamie there was no magical udder cream or lucky halter. Instead, there was hard work, confidence, and a desire to succeed. He believed being a dairy judge began outside the show ring, respecting those who tried hard and genuinely enjoyed being a dairy farmer. Breeding, production, genet ics, nutrition, and creating your own herd of good quality milk cows was every bit as important to Jamie as showing dairy cattle. To him, these were all qualities that made an excellent judge of the dairy breed.
I felt very fortunate to call Jamie Donohoe a close personal friend, as many of you in attendance tonight would as well.
I’m not exactly sure when or how my friendship with Jamie started? You see we didn’t grow up in the same town, or live across the street from each other, didn’t go to school together, and never played on the same sports teams, in fact we grew up in opposite corners of the province.
Our friendship grew out of events like WCC, 4H achievement days, and in later years competing and exhibiting in open dairy shows, and impromptu road trips to World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair.
I think every participant at this year’s WCC event has a desire to do as well as they possibly can, and top placing achievements are incredible results and something to cherish and be proud of. But I think the true winners are the participants who find and make friends, like the friend & mentor Jamie Donohoe was to all of us. Friendships and bonds built during competition and over the comradery of teamwork are relationships that will last a life
for each of you is that over the course of a week like this that you will find friendship and mentorship amongst your teammates and compet itors, like Jamie was for so many of us.

Classifiers are coming again to Alberta for the mid-round, starting September 12th. This is always an exciting time, good luck to everyone! There will be a $30 surcharge added to the classification visit due to higher fuel costs.
The WCC Junior Dairy show was hosted in Manitoba from August 23-27th. There were several team members of Holstein Canada in attendance to support the Junior show in Western Canada.
Very good news about the eartag situation, we are almost back to normal shipping time (3 weeks or less).
If you have any questions, please contact Toby or myself.
