EXECUTIVE UPDATES Willem Vanderlinde

President’s Report

National Director’s Report

What a year it was for growing crops and getting them off. I was visiting the Westerner Dairy Showcase and I talked to a lot of people that had challenges with getting their crops off. Due to that, a lot of breeders could not make it out to the show. Numbers were down but it was still a spectacular show. Congrats to all the winners!

Holstein Canada is still in the process of hiring a new CEO as Ann Louise is retiring.

Also, it was great to see many participants at the Western Canadian Classic held in Olds this year. Big thank you to the organizers, volunteers and sponsors. Special thanks to Lexi Wright who is stepping down after 14 years as one of the leaders. Next year WCC will be held in Brandon, Manitoba. To everyone, good luck with the next round with the classifier, it’s always an exciting time and we pray for good weather that we all can get our crops off the field safely.

I have been appointed as one of the youth directors on the board. Holstein Canada is hosting a secretary forum on Oct 25/26; all branch secretaries are invited to the Brantford office. Keep an eye on your Info Holstein Magazine for information containing an update to NLID tags. Show dates for the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto are from Nov 7-9, 2019. Exciting news: Compass is now launched; this is a new free online genetic software allowing you to “Navigate Your Herd’s success”. This program is brought to you by Holstein Canada and Lactanet, with the support from Zoetis Canada. Compass will be available online. (www. compasscan.ca)

ORVILLE SCHMIDT PRESENTATION At the Westerner Dairy Showcase banquet in Red Deer a token of the industry’s appreciation for all of Orville’s work with both the provincial and national Holstein Associations’s was presented.

Holstein Canada Announces CEO Retirement and Succession Plan Brantford, ON – On behalf of the Holstein Canada Board of Directors, it is with mixed

emotions that I announce Ann Louise Carson’s plans to retire as Chief Executive Officer. Carson will remain in the CEO role until her retirement takes effect on April 30, 2020. The Board has appointed a CEO Search Committee to do a proper analysis of the profile required for this key position in our industry and to identify the best candidate to serve as the next CEO. Ann Louise has been at the helm of Holstein Canada since May 2012. “I’ve had the immense pleasure and honour to serve the Board and members for the past seven years,” she said. “Working alongside a very dedicated team, I am fulfilled by all that we have accomplished to position Holstein Canada as a service provider and source of unbiased information to every dairy farm in Canada. As we move forward to the future, I have great confidence in the strength of our team and the opportunities that lie ahead for Holstein Canada. I am confident that it is the right time to transition the Association to its next generation of leadership while I look forward to supporting many great projects in the next ten months.” The entire Holstein Canada Board and team want to thank Ann Louise for her commitment and countless contributions to our Association over the past seven years. Under her guidance and stewardship, Holstein Canada has built a strong foundation for service excellence, strong member connections and growth, and today the company is well positioned as a strong dairy industry resource with the right strategy in place to drive innovation to meet producer’s needs. Over the past seven years, Holstein Canada has made notable contributions in the dairy industry, including being selected as the service provider for the Cattle Assessments program under Dairy Farmers of Canada’s proAction® initiative, launching the Herdbook system rewrite, and strengthening the service delivery and leadership teams. Holstein Canada wishes Ann Louise Carson the very best as she chooses to hang up her skates in a few months to enjoy the next chapter of her life. ###

Team Canada Returns from a Successful EYBS 2019 Brantford, Ont. – Holstein Canada, along with the provincial Branches, was once again pleased to send a team of six youth to participate in the 2019 European Young Breeders School (EYBS) in Battice, Belgium. Team Canada was comprised of Lee Morey (Alta.), Brent Sayles (Ont.), Clarissa McCallum (Ont.), Frédéric Fortier (Que.), Francis Blanchette (Que.) and Brooke Boonstopple (N.B.). Pier-Olivier Lehoux of Lehoux Holsteins accompanied the team to provide leadership and guidance throughout the event. These six participants competed against 150 youth from 15 European countries and, new this year, a team from Australia. Team Canada had a strong showing with several notable individual results, with all members placing in the top 25 overall: Brent Sayles placed 2nd, Brooke Boonstopple placed 8th, Francis Blanchette placed 13th, Clarissa McCallum placed 16th, Frédéric Fortier placed 17th, and Lee Morey placed 25th. Team Canada (L-R): Pier-Olivier Lehoux, Frédéric Fortier, Lee Morey, Brooke Boonstopple, Clarissa McCallum, Francis Blanchette, and Brent Sayles.

The five-day event included numerous workshops, Judging and Clipping competitions, and Conformation and Showmanship classes. Each team was judged on their participation, teamwork, and how they cared for their animals. Holstein Canada and the provincial Branches have been collaborating to send a team from Canada every year since 2013. Team members are selected by their provincial Branches and are winners of provincial competitions and/or successful candidates from an interview process held within their respective provinces. EYBS is a hands-on interactive event that falls under the “Practical Learning Opportunities” pillar of the Holstein Canada Young Leader Program, with some bonus international travel. Young Leaders interested in becoming members of a future EYBS Team Canada are encouraged to contact their provincial Holstein Branch for more information.

ADVERTISING REPORT- TIm Hummel As we enter into fall season we hope everyone is wrapping up the harvest. Following is a short re-cap of what has been happening with Alberta Holstein. The Alberta Holstein Association booth was set up at the Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer. There was a good attendance at the show this year and we distributed lots of directories and the new 2020 calendar! If you have photos of show or club events please forward them to Amanda Hehli (amandahehli@hotmail.ca) so we can add them to the video presentation that accompanies the booth. What a great way to showcase the events happening in your club. The booth will next be set up at the Alberta Milk AGM in Edmonton in November.

with the new 2020 breeder calendar. Thank you to the breeders who have once again made the calendar great for another year! And to the advertisers for their continued support. Thank you to Kiki Ernst for the use of her photo for the front cover. Alberta Holstein continues to be active on Facebook, sharing club events, show results and achievements of our Alberta members. The website continues to grow its audience, if your club has events that you would like to share please send info to Amanda. We are also looking at starting an Instagram page for the Branch, let us know what your thoughts on this are! Look for the Alberta Holstein Association booth at the next event.

Our partnership with Farmstead Ag Swag has come to an end, so the online store is no longer up and running. Talk to Wendy Weir if you are interested in any items. We have new tote bags coming this fall and they will be available along
