BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE I was born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, and came to the United States to fulfill my dream of becoming an architect. I started my path to architecture in the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena in the Dominican Republic and then transferred to Boston Architectural College.

While working towards my degree, I gained extensive professional experience while working on several Architecture and engineering firms. I learned the professional skill needed to enter the market now as a graduate of Bac. I have participated as a volunteer for Habitat for humanity. This helped me get back to the community and grow my experience of making an optimistic change Trough architecture.

What kind of change do you want to make in the world? What kind of designer do you want to be?

This is one of the many questions that were always present in my mind through my years at the BAC. Many things came to my head about what I should do. I did not know those answers; I just knew what I did not want, to be stuck with the same ideas for the rest of my career.

As my career went through, I understood that design represents ideas that can change and develop in a design process that sometimes can be long and slow but is needed for those ideas to prosper in an inspiring way.

Until this point, my academic and professional qualifications have provided me with the tools needed to grow in my career and develop my passion further. I believed that all the courses taken have helped me develop my design skills in many aspects, and I have been challenged in this has changed all the preset that I had before starting this school. The BAC has given me the confidence that I need to achieve my goals and reach new limits.

Project Description The project design focuses in bring farming innovation to the city of Boston, preparing for the population increase in the following years. Urban farming is the solution that we were waiting for. The purposed of WE GROW in to be able to produce fresh vegetables and produce for the community and visitors all year long. WE GROW is also a place where buyers and sellers of food can interact. The vertical farming components of WE GROW is focused on water-saving and highly productive hydroponic agriculture systems. Above all, WE GROW is a bridge between Architecture and nature.

This project will include hydroponics and Aquaponic farms, community space , classroom and workshop areas, coffee shop ,research and lab areas.

The building will perform as a community complex providing fresh food and healthy lifestyles.

The urban farming effort not only gives the community greater access to fresh produce, but at the same time provides to the community with economic and educational opportunities through jobs, lessons, field trips and mentoring.

By 2050 world population will reach 9 billion, food demand is set to rapidly increase as urbanization increases reducing available arable land, feeding all those people will mean increasing food production by 70%, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization our homes into a mean of production.

Bringing farming into the city and educating the people on this matter will ignite a change on how we turn our homes into a mean of production.

Farming accounts for 30% of all greenhouses gas emission.

PROBLEM SOLUTION

WHAT IS HYDROPONIC? The basic idea behind hydroponics involves growing plants in just water - No soil. Within these parameters, there are various ways to grow and reap a bountiful harvest, but most hydroponics systems work using the same basic principles: Plants are grown within some type of container, where water with added fertilizer can reach the roots and allow the plants to grow. WHAT IS AQUAPONICS? Is raising fish and plants in the same water source. The fish actually provide the fertilizer for the plants and the plant roots filter the water for the fish. When fish are introduced to a freshwater source, they give off ammonia through their gills and waste (pee and poop!). Over time, nitrifying bacteria - naturally-occurring microorganisms - begin to grow on all the surface area under the water. This bacteria converts the fish waste into nitrites, and eventually nitrates, which is plant food. So aquaponic farms actually grow three separate, equally important things, plants, fish and beneficial bacteria. With the correct ratio of plants to fish, an aquaponic system can be a very sustainable and fun way to grow food.* Water is returned with ammonia remove

PROGRAM STUDY

LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY WE GROW uses the latest LED horticultural lighting technologies to provide plants with the ideal light spectrum they need to thrive.

Hydroponic farm is located both with natural light and little to no light, but in both scenarios LED light provides the light need it for the plants The LEDs respond to changes in ambient light, mimicking the schedule of the sun whilst ensuring plants achieve their optimal photosynthetic capacity.

Plants demand different lights in each growing stage and by species. Sprout, seedling, and at the vegetative or flowering stage, plants need different light.

• The food-farm-tower is based on two main objectives: to maximize productivity and diversity of the crops by optimizing solar exposure, and provide flexibility so that the system can be integrated into a mixed-use building.

• The closed-loop ecosystem collects rainwater for irrigation, harnesses solar energy with photovoltaics, produces crops in each of the terraced floors, and incorporates composting on-site to take care of waste and create healthy soils.

WHO LIVES HERE? Residents of the WE GROW are ecologically conscious growers, and farmers. The building provides unique residences that share common spaces as labs, offices, and lounges spaces. Residents in the building are encouraged to utilize the laboratory spaces, either to make products, grow produce, or help with general maintenance of the building.

WE GROW is a living, breathing building that is design to adapt throughout time. Residents must take part in this adaptation by continually working and contributing to the building.

HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM

THE CERES ECOLOOP The Ceres Ecoloop™ is a ground coupled heat pump system that heats, cools and dehumidifies our sealed greenhouses. It acts as an innovative geothermal HVAC system that utilizes the Earth’s steady temperature (between 45°- 60°F) to create precise climates in each greenhouse environment.
