Chest board sets 33,000 target $

♦Late requests not included in amount By Melinda L. Lucas A $33,000 Albany Chest goal was set by directors at a meeting held last Wednesday, Sept. 26, with the 2012 campaign already underway. The target amount is $2,000 less than last year’s goal, and almost $5,000 less than the amount that was actually distributed in January. However, several requests and inquiries have come in since last week’s meeting, several of them from agencies that normally receive funding. “As is our custom, we set the goal based on the total of all the requests,” said board chairman Pat Kelly. He added that the new Chest

by-laws adopted the same evening stipulate that a single entity shouldn’t receive more than $5,000 under normal circumstances. “Based on that decision, and after totaling the requests that we had received at that time, we set the goal at $33,000.” Since last Wednesday, two more formal applications have been given to board members, with representatives of a third organization indicating that they intend to submit a request, along with an inquiry from another non-profit board. “We had several late requests from groups that are all in great need of funding,” commented board member Donna Schkade. “Some of them may have new chair people that possibly were not told they were long-time receivers of Chest monies, or they

By Kathryn Stapp Area residents are invited to spend some time at SPA-DEE-DAH, the abandoned church turned day spa, to experience a joyful comedy at the Aztec Theater. Throw in a sexy ex, a marriage proposal and a conniving arch-rival, and the gang’s wild hair that results in hilarity as the Albany Mainstreet Playhouse production of The Hallelujah Girls opens tonight (Thursday). The comedy will be presented Oct. 4 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances will be staged Oct. 7, 13 and 14 at 3:00 p.m. All performances will be at the Aztec Theater. Ticket purchases may be made at The Albany News with adult tickets $8 and student tickets $6. Those who purchased AMP memberships in January may use the season punch tickets provided at that time. Director of The Hallelujah Girls, Jennifer Boudreau, has been in rehearsal with the cast of the show for five weeks. Though long nights at the theater can be grueling, she said that she has thoroughly enjoyed the laughs that the comedy has brought to the stage and the process has been a rewarding one.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

♦Baseball league reaches $88,500 goal By Melinda L. Lucas The Albany Baseball Association is facing a brighter future this week after meeting the Oct. 1 fundraising deadline to replace deteriorating lights and poles at the youth baseball field on Griffin Road. The capital campaign, entitled “A Brighter Future,” began just a little over a month ago, with the goal of raising $88,500 in time to have the new lighting system in place by the 2013

spring baseball season. However, a challenge grant of $10,000 from Kickapoo Spring Foundation of Abilene inspired the organization to move forward more rapidly. The grant was contingent on collecting the balance of funds by Oct. 1. The league had raised $54,925 as of last week’s news deadline, including the challenge grant, and issued an appeal to secure the remaining $33,575. “On the day of the deadline we were still short of our goal,” said league president Pat Kelly. “A representative from First
