NOTICE

OF GUNNISON COUNTY, BLM, AND USFS 2024 SPRING SEASONAL ROAD CLOSURES

Gunnison County, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have temporarily closed several roads to all motor vehicles to protect Gunnison Sage-Grouse during their mating season and to prevent road damage during wet spring conditions.

These roads are closed by March 15 and will reopen on May 15, 2024. Roads may be closed earlier than March 15 if they are excessively muddy. The cooperation of the public is required to successfully implement these road closures, which help support conservation efforts for Gunnison Sage-Grouse.

The U.S. Forest Service closures in the Flat Top Mountain area north of Gunnison extends through June 15 to protect nesting Gunnison Sage-Grouse. These include Henkel Road and Smokey Bear access roads. BLM roads across the basin are subject to the motorized closures except for Hartman Rocks north of the Powerline Road. Roads and trails in the north end of Hartman Rocks are subject to closure based on winter

and mud conditions but those will open when roads and trails dry out. Signal Peak roads and trails on BLM lands remain closed to motorized use from January 1 to May 15 to protect wintering wildlife. Mechanized use on Signal Peak is allowed east of the Signal Peak Road beginning May 1 after 10 am. There is a human use closure on Signal Peak from March 15 to May 15; affected trails include The Ridge, Rasta Gulch, and Chicken Wing.

Copies of the closure list and maps are available at Gunnison County Public Works, 195 Basin Park Drive; Gunnison County Administration Office, 200 E. Virginia Ave; Colorado Parks and Wildlife Office, 300 W. New York; the BLM office at 2500 E. New York Ave; and the USFS Office, 216 N. Colorado Street; Gunnison, Colorado.

These closures apply to all motorized vehicles. Do not park at the closures in a manner that blocks access through the closure gates. All non-motorized trail users are also requested to use Gunnison Basin roads/trails only after 9 a.m. during this period to help reduce disturbance to sage-grouse.

For additional information call Gunnison County Public Works at 6410044; BLM at 642-4940; or the U.S. Forest Service at 641-0471.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Mother’s Day Proclamation

While countries around the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, several countries, including the United States, Italy, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Turkey celebrate it on the second Sunday of May.

In the United States, the origins of the official holiday go back to 1870, when Julia Ward Howe – an abolitionist best remembered as the poet who wrote “Battle Hymn of the Republic” – worked to establish a Mother’s Peace Day. Howe dedicated the celebration to the eradication of war, and organized festivities in Boston for years.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, began the campaign to have Mother’s Day officially recognized, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson did this, proclaiming it a national holiday and a “public expression of our love and reverence for all mothers.”

Today’s commercialized celebration of candy, flowers, gift certificates, and lavish meals at restaurants bears little resemblance to Howe’s original idea. There is nothing wrong with that. But here, for the record’s sake, is the proclamation she wrote in 1870,

which explains, in her own impassioned words, the goals of the original holiday.

“Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: “We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.

Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.

From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, “Disarm, disarm! The sword is not the balance of justice.” Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession.

As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to

the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each learning after his own time, the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.”

PET ADOPTION

Lovely Pearl is a 4-year-old female Pittie mix who stares at you with so much love and devotion in her eyes! She is an engaging girl who still likes to play with toys. She especially loves human attention, rubbing on you and giving simple kisses. She walks very nicely on leash and is house trained. Pearl’s favorite part of her day is hanging with her humans and her least favorite is being put back into her kennel. She had a loving home but sadly her owner passed away and she is quite confused. Pearl had an elderly companion in her previous home who she got on well with but she will be very discerning about any new dog. Kids, yes please. Dogs, no thank you. Cats, no thank you. This girl cannot wait to find her new family to love unconditionally.

JoJo is a 4-year-old Aussie/Border Collie mix. He has spent most of his life outside and in a barn and a brief time indoors, so additional house training may be needed. JoJo will make a wonderful companion for a human dedicated to giving him the training and patience he deserves. JoJo will require a securely fenced yard as he loves to explore away from home if given the opportunity. This sweet boy deserves a new home with a family who will cherish him!

Senior Spotlight

For some of us, it may be all about the benjamins, but for others it’s all about the food, baby. Na Ki’o (nuh KEY oh), which is Hawaiian for “puddle,” loves food, food and more food. Cat food, dog food, people food -- he’s on the prowl for any and all of it. Sure, a warm lap is nice, or a nap in the sun, or chewing on either his friend Marrakesh or the dinosaur he stole from TL, but can any of those really compare to the siren call of food?

Ki’o, a GVAWL ward for nearly a year before Lynn and TL took him home almost 10 years ago (we think he’s 16), came with diabetes and pancreatitis, plus he’s added asthma and some serious cataracts along the way. But none of this has stopped this plucky fellow, who gets along quite amiably with everyone and everything except the vacuum (and even that’s not so scary anymore). He’s happy to run across the room if there’s food in it for him; otherwise you might just find him tucked into his new heated bed, probably dreaming about cream puffs and other delectable snacks.
