How to help teens to be smart about credit Credit is a necessary component of doing business in the modern world. The credit reporting agency Experian defines credit as the ability to borrow money or access goods or services with the understanding that a person will pay later. Various creditors grant credit based on their confidence that a borrower will repay what is owed. Many adults learn about credit through trial and error. Financial literacy is not taught in many schools, although lots of people feel it merits space alongside literature, math, science, and other subjects. A recent study found only one in six high school students are required to take a personal finance class in the United States. In addition, a 2018 survey found only one-third of Americans were taught what a credit score is by their parents. It is essential that guardians share information about credit with young adults to help them be financially solvent and successful later in life. Here are some ways to help young adults learn about credit. Start with credit basics Speak generally about credit and how it is used. Then explain credit scores, credit bureaus and credit reports. A credit history and credit score is important information for young adults to have early on

and check frequently, as having good credit improves the chances they will qualify for loans and earn acceptable terms in the future. Help them build credit Having one or more credit accounts can help a person establish and build credit by making payments on time. Credit card companies often advertise student and secured credit card accounts that come with small or managed credit limits. Making purchases on the cards and paying them in full every month is the best way to improve a credit score or maintain a good one. Another way teens can build credit is through their student loans. Making small payments on the principal while in school can help establish a strong credit history. Check their credit reports The Federal Trade Commission re commends checking a child’s credit score around the age of 16 or 17. This will help families figure out if there are any anomalies that may indicate identity theft or inaccurate credit issues. Know the formula for good credit Forbes says there are five categories that add up to good credit: 1. Payment history (35 percent): Always pay bills on time.

(Metro Creative)

2. Amounts owed (30 percent): Borrow a low amount compared to the total lines of credit. This also is known as credit utilization. 3. Length of credit history (15 percent): Keeping accounts open for a long time is a win. 4. New credit (10 percent): Do not apply for too much new credit too often. 5. Credit mix (10 percent): Having a balance of differ-

ent types of credit, such as car loans, credit cards and other types of debt, is advantageous. Share your own experiences Sometimes the best way to teach about credit is to be honest about what a parent or another adult did wrong with his or her finances, and use that as a “what not to do” scenario. It is important for young adults to learn about credit so

they can make smart choices that will positively affect their future. Although talking about finances may be uncomfortable, it is vital for families to have these discussions. (Source: Metro Creative)

Conserve fuel on road trips Road trips remind drivers of just how thrilling the open road can be. For millions of individuals, nothing provides a sense of escapism as effectively as the open road. Though road trips can be liberating, they do not allow a complete escape from reality, something drivers realize when the time comes to fill up the gas tank. Gas prices fell considerably by mid-December 2023, dipping to an average of $3.12 per gallon of regular by the middle of that month according to data from AAA. That marked a significant decline from just a month earlier, when prices for a gallon of regular gas averaged $3.36. But drivers know prices can spike just as quickly as they drop, so it pays dividends to recognize strategies to conserve fuel. Such strategies can be especially beneficial for drivers about to embark on a road trip. Slow down Pushing the pedal to the medal might be a romantic, if unsafe, notion of how to drive on a road trip. But that approach can be costly at the pump. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, every five miles per hour motorists drive over 50 miles per hour is the equivalent of paying $0.30 more per gallon of gas. That

estimate is based on a gallon of gas costing $4.32, but drivers can still conserve a considerable amount of fuel by slowing down. Steer clear of city driving The stop-and-go traffic that is a hallmark of city driving can compromise fuel efficiency. Rapid acceleration and braking, which is hard to avoid when driving through cities with lots of stoplights and pedestrians, can lower gas mileage by as much as 40%. Avoid rooftop cargo Rooftop cargo boxes might be a necessity when a car is packed with passengers. But these luxuries come at a steep cost. A study from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 17% on the highway and as much as 25% on interstates where drivers drive at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour. The DOE reports that rearmount cargo boxes are much more efficient, so drivers looking to conserve fuel may want to pack light and/or opt for rearmount cargo boxes instead of rooftop boxes. Utilize cruise control Utilizing the cruise control

function on a vehicle can save drivers as much as 14%t on fuel. Cruise control is not advisable when driving in cities or on roads with stop lights. However, when driving on interstates, driving at the same continuous

speed helps drivers avoid constant accelerations and decelerations, which compromise fuel efficiency. When the open road beckons, drivers can make their road trips more affordable by imple-

menting various strategies to conserve fuel. (Source: Metro Creative)

Groundhog Day fun and facts Groundhog Day offers a touch of whimsy during the often bleak midwinter chill. Across the country, eager celebrants await a rascally rodent to determine if there will be six more weeks of winter or if the nation will receive an early reprieve from the cold. It is fun to guess if an early spring is coming, and even more so to rely on a large ground squirrel to play meteorologist. To further enhance the Groundhog Day experience, burrow into these interesting facts about the holiday and the animal itself. • The world can thank the Germans for the Groundhog Day tradition. The see-hisshadow concept was adapted from a German Candlemas Day tradition in which clergymen would bless the candles they needed for the cold season. If the candles brought a sunny day, there would be six more weeks of winter. However, clouds and rain signified that winter would end soon. Germans who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s brought the custom to America. • Germans once used a hedgehog as their animal forecaster. When relocating to Pennsylvania, groundhogs were used because they were more common than hedgehogs. • Punxsutawney Phil is perhaps most revered for his forecasting abilities. However, more than a dozen states have their own prognosticating groundhogs. These include Buckeye Chuck in Ohio, Birmingham Bill in Alabama and General Beauregard Lee in Georgia. • Phil has been predicting the weather at Gobbler’s Knob for more than 130 years. This is quite a feat considering groundhogs typically live between six and eight years. Folklore indicates Phil sips a magical drink that will prolong his life for seven more years.

• Phil’s full name is Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and WeatherProphet Extraordinary. • Groundhogs also are called woodchucks and are a species of rodent known as marmots. They typically weigh between 12 and 15 pounds. Woodchucks really have nothing to do with wood or chucking. The name stems from an Algonquian name wuchak. • The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration says Phil has seen his shadow more times than not between 1887 and 2019. Statistically speaking, six more weeks of winter is often the norm. • Groundhogs prefer to live in open country or at woodland edges. They are never far from a burrow made in well-drained soil. Most have summer and winter dens. • Groundhogs are adept at predicting the arrival of spring, just not in the way people have come to know from Groundhog Day. Since they hibernate, when groundhogs emerge from their burrows, it’s a sure sign spring is on its way. • The 1993 movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray helped solidify Punxsutawney Phil as a national hero and household name. Since then, crowds numbering as high as 30,000 have made the pilgrimage to see Phil in person. Groundhog Day brings some levity to an otherwise uneventful time of year. (source: Metro Creative)

SUDOKU HERE’S HOW IT WORKS Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
