The City of Gunnison is adjusting the policy it uses to call in plow crews after hours — a change city officials hope will avoid exhausting both equipment and manpower, and reduce nighttime disruptions to residents. C i t y c ou n c i l a d o p t e d a snow and ice removal plan for Gunnison in 2017, a document that was designed to be modified periodically to adapt to

the ever-changing challenges of managing road conditions during the winter months. The plan is reviewed annually by the Public Works Department, and any changes must be approved by council. The former plan required plowing based on 1 inch of snow accumulation at night along Hwy. 135 and Hwy. 50, and 2 inches for the remaining streets in and around Gunnison. Police dispatch contacts the on-call crew leader once this amount of snow falls in town. The crew lead then decides whether a full plow crew is needed or if sanding the roads is enough. A n o t h e r n e w Gu n n i s o n Valley affordable housing project is just a construction season away from breaking ground and will serve some of the community’s lowest-income residents. At the end of November, Crested Butte’s Mineral Point project received an additional $600,000 from the Town of Crested Butte and the multijurisdictional Valley Housing Fund. Mineral Point is a 34-unit affordable housing development on the north side of town, one of three new workforce housing projects next to the Slate River. While Gunnison

County’s Whetstone just south of Crested Butte isn’t expected to break ground on utilities until the end of next year, Mineral Point residents may be housed by the end of 2024. The over $15 million development is being funded by a mixture of federal tax credits, financial support from the town and state grants. Utilities were laid this past season, and construction is expected to start in the spring. Mineral Point is a lowincome housing tax credits (LIHTC) project, meaning it is primarily funded by federal tax credits and will offer housing at a restricted area median income (AMI) range — between 30-60% AMI, or $22,000 and $45,000 for a twoperson household.
