Angela Lee’s laugh has a warmth that fills a room, but behind her easy smile is a story of grit and resilience. At 50, she has called Gunnison home for more than a decade. It hasn’t always been easy—she has faced racism and prejudice—but in this mountain town she has also built a life rich with friendships, purpose, and joy.

Angela grew up in North Carolina, the oldest of four. Her path was different from the start: born with severe cataracts, she later received a prosthetic eye, and by age ten was living with glaucoma. Her childhood was shaped by challenge and determination. She attended a school for the blind in Raleigh, living there during the week before traveling nearly four hours home each weekend. She graduated in 1994 with not just an education but the resilience to face the world on her own terms.

Travel costs have kept Angela from visiting her family since 2017, a painful gap she feels deeply. Still, her bond with her mother remains strong; they speak almost every week, sharing news, laughter, and comfort across the miles. Music has always been a constant. Her mother spotted her talent early, enrolling her in piano lessons. She still keeps a small keyboard at home, losing herself in oldies and doo-wop—favorites include “Be My Baby” and “A Teenager in Love.” Alongside music, she enjoys cooking, gaming, and, perhaps most of all, helping others.

Much of her community life centers on Six Points, where she worked as a cashier for nearly two years and still joins art classes, outings, math lessons, and even Spanish practice. These moments remind her to take pride in herself and have helped her become more flexible, considerate, and patient. Through Six Points, Angela also found her athletic side. She has competed in Special Olympics events like the shot put, 100-meter dash, 400-meter relay, and even sprint cycling. What she treasures most is the camaraderie with her coaches, Brian and Jennifer, and her fellow athletes—training days filled with laughter, encouragement, and the thrill of doing more than she thought she could. Angela’s life has not been free of hardship, but she meets each challenge with perseverance, humor, and heart. In Gunnison’s wide skies and open valleys, she has created something remarkable: a life that is truly her own.

Zoey was not fully socialized when she came to live with us. Adopted out as a barn cat several years ago by GVAWL, she came back to the shelter when she was found seeking shelter inside a vacant home. Her adoptive Mom was a cattery volunteer who worked with Zoey and thought she had potential to become a house cat, and it turned out to be a great decision! Zoey has come so far, from initially hiding under a chair, to becoming a sweet and loving companion. Despite being an older cat, she still jumps and plays. Her favorite game is catching rubber bands we toss to her, snatching them with her paws.
