ccording to a legend, a shepherd discovered magnets 4,000 years ago.

One day, the shepherd Magnes was walking in a region of Greece called Magnesia. He sat down and looked at his sandals.

He had metal nails in his sandals. The sandals kept sticking to the rocks where he was walking.

The metal end of the shepherd’s hook also stuck to the rocks.

The rocks that stuck to metal were naturally occurring magnets called lodestones

Is the legend true?

Invisible Power: Magnetism

You can’t see the force that pulls certain kinds of metal towards a magnet. But it is a force in nature, like gravity is a natural force, that we can’t see. What do magnets attract? Metals such as iron, nickel and cobalt are attracted to magnets. Other materials such as aluminum, glass, plastic and wood aren’t attracted to magnets.

Do the math to see which of these items are attracted to magnets. If the answer is an even number, that means it’s magnetic.

Magnets Push and Pull

We usually think of magnetic force attracting options towards a magnet.

But magnets can also repel or push away objects. This is because magnets have a north pole and south pole

In short, opposite poles attract, and the same poles repel

No one knows for sure. Some say the story took place in India instead of Greece. But finding rocks that could stick to sandals started some creative thinking and new inventions that have used magnets for thousands of years.

There is an invisible area around a magnet where its pulling force can be felt. Circle every other letter to find out what this area is called.

Tell a Story

Select a photograph in the newspaper. What do you think happened BEFORE the photo was taken. What do you think happened AFTER the photograph was taken? Write a story about what is happening in the photograph and what happened before and after.

What if one of your hands suddenly became a magnet. Tell about your life with a magnet hand.

Gunnison County, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have temporarily closed several roads to all motor vehicles to protect Gunnison Sage-Grouse during their mating season and to prevent road damage during wet spring conditions.

These roads are closed by March 14 and will reopen on May 15, 2025. Roads may be closed earlier than March 14 if they are excessively muddy. The cooperation of the public is required to successfully implement these road closures, which help support conservation efforts for Gunnison Sage-Grouse.

New in 2025, the BLM has area closures to all human use from March 14 to May 15 in the Chance Gulch and Sapinero Mesa Areas of Critical Environmental Concern.

The U.S. Forest Service closures in the Flat Top Mountain area north of Gunnison extends through July 15 to protect nesting Gunnison Sage-Grouse.

BLM roads across the basin are subject to the motorized closures except for Hartman Rocks north of the Powerline Road.

Roads and trails in the north end of Hartman Rocks are subject to closure based on winter and mud conditions but those will open when roads and trails dry out.

Signal Peak roads and trails on BLM lands remain closed to motorized use from January 1 to May 15 to protect wintering wildlife. Mechanized use on Signal Peak is allowed east of the Signal Peak Road beginning May 1 after 10 am. There is a human use closure on Signal Peak from March 17 to May 15; affected trails include The Ridge, Rasta Gulch, and Chicken Wing.

Copies of the closure list and maps are available at Gunnison County Public Works, 195 Basin Park Drive; Gunnison

These closures apply to all motorized vehicles. Do not park at the closures in a manner that blocks access through the closure gates. All non-motorized trail users are also requested to use Gunnison Basin roads/trails only after 9 a.m. during this period to help reduce disturbance to sage-grouse. For additional information call Gunnison

These include Henkel Road and Smokey Bear access roads.

A senior’s guide to exercising safely

Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle for people of any age, including the over-50 crowd. Seniors may have been told by their physicians that exercise promotes heart health and is essential to maintaining bone and muscle strength as well as balance and flexibility. Joining an exercise class or a gym also can be a social activity that promotes interaction with others of similar ages and with shared goals. Exercise is undoubtedly beneficial for seniors, but it is important for older adults to exercise caution when starting a workout regimen. Prioritizing safety can circumvent injuries that could waylay progress. Temple Health says that seniors can suffer overuse injuries, torn ligaments or cartilage, broken bones, and other physical problems if they do not embrace safe exercising

strategies. Most injuries can be avoided when following these healthy habits and guidelines.

• Find an activity you like. Engaging in regular exercise helps you maintain a higher level of fitness compared to those who are sedentary. Maintaining a consistent exercise regimen ensures you won’t be starting over each time you stop exercising and have to build up again to your previous fitness level.

• Start slowly and then increase gradually. People hear “exercise” and they may think that translates to hours at the gym and high-intensity workouts. But general guidelines state older adults need about 2.5 hours of aerobic activity per week, not each day. So exercising does not have to take as much time or be as intense as one might think. Combine aerobic exercise with activities that strengthen muscles.

• Warm up before activity. It’s important to get the body acclimated to exercise before each workout. Walking in place,

doing arm circles and engaging in some gentle squats or lunges can prepare the body for what is to come. Stretch afterwards when ligaments and tendons are warmed up.

• Remember to stay hydrated.

Touro LCMC Health says that older adults are at greater risk for dehydration because they naturally have less water in their bodies or take medications that increase risk of dehydration. Drinking enough water during exercise is key.

• Know your limits and adapt. A workout that is fine for a 30-yearold may not be the same for someone who is 60. You might need to embrace walking instead of running, or even swap lifting weights with using resistance bands or doing body weight exercises.

• Focus on some balance activities. Balance issues can cause seniors to fall and risk serious injury. Working on your balance may help to lower your risk of these types of injuries, and can be as simple as standing on
