n the excellent movie "Field of Dreams," James Earl Jones' character delivers a philosophical speech about the mystical power of baseball to mark time as the country has been "erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again."

It's good stuff.

Here in the Gunnsion Country we wouldn't say that about baseball. We look to the Cattlemen's Days Rodeo. For 125 years it has been the anchor around which community life has swung. No matter what storms arise, Cattlemen's holds us firmly in place, never letting us forget that this is a cow town, and darn proud of it. Read the story in these pages to learn more about that.

Living history rolls on in Colorado's oldest rodeo

or folks in the Gunnison Valley, the word “continuous” is as important as that first cup of coffee in the morning.

This is home to the longest-running continuous rodeo in Colorado and one of the oldest events of its kind in the United States. This year marks the 125th consecutive Cattlemen’s Days Rodeo, and that brings great pride to the people in this community since they’ve fought to make it happen.

Cattlemen’s Days began in 1901 as a way for valley residents to gather and celebrate their Western way of life. The dates were chosen to conduct the event just before the busy haying season. It has continued through two world

had stopped Cattlemen’s Days before, and they weren’t about to let it happen in 2020.

Local businessman Kevin Coblentz, who had already served as president of the volunteerbased organization for two years, stepped in for another and led the charge to ensure the streak continued. He had help from several others and a proud group of residents who

wars, several other international conflicts and two pandemics. When Covid threatened the rodeo’s cancellation five years ago, community members bonded together. The event went ahead anyway because a select few realized the rodeo’s impact to the folks in the valley — and the importance of continuity.

Steer wrestling is a popular event at Cattlemen's Days. found the dollars to make sure there was a rodeo.

“Kevin and Brad Tutor were a huge part of that,” said Roger Johnson, a longtime Cattlemen’s Days committee member and a past president. “There were others on the committee that put in their two cents worth and fought to have that.”

That’s why the community will celebrate yet another milestone this year — 125 years after the celebration began with a rodeo on Main Street. This year’s Cattlemen’s Days will take place Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, July 13, at Fred Field Western Center in Gunnison, and there’s no better way to honor the event than to look at its legacy.

Johnson is a bit of a historian for Cattlemen’s Days. He was president in 2000 during the festival’s centennial celebration and helped organize a video commemorating it. He’s done his research and continues to expound upon the growth and development of Gunnison’s marquee event.

“Like everything else, it got started in the late 1800s, but wasn’t officially recognized as an organized rodeo until the 1900s,” he said.

“The first ones were held just across from my house on the highway here where the railroad tracks split. It featured all sorts of things, but mainly it was bronc riding and horse racing.

Those two events stayed for the longest time until horse racing ended a few years ago. But

Cattlemen’s Days started on the dirt streets downtown. Folks from all over made their way to town, whether by horse and buggy or horseback or any way they could make the trek. Livestock for the rodeo was driven into town from Mergelman Flats, similar to the cattle drives that paved the way for westward expansion of the United States.

“That was the only time that herd ever saw a human, so you can just imagine what that was like,” Johnson said.

There was a shindig in town, and it may be the only time some families and ranch hands would see friends annually.

From 1913-1928, the rodeo and races took place at the Colorado Normal School, now Western Colorado University. It returned to downtown for a few years before the Cattlemen’s Days Committee was established in the mid-1930s. The western center that houses the annual gala was created in 1938 and has served as the home of Cattlemen’s Days since.

“We’ve had the college’s economics department do our studies for us, and Cattlemen’s Days is still the largest moneymaker of the year for the community,” Jonson said. “They’re saying tourism is taking over as the main staple for Gunnison, but a lot of tourism comes in July when we have Cattlemen’s Days. I still think it’s an extremely important part of the Gunnison community.”

The economic impact to the town is important, but there are bigger things at play. This is the community’s jubilee, its county fair. It’s the time of year for class reunions and family gatherings. Children work all year on their 4-H projects to have them ready for Cattle-

men’s Days. It’s the perfect setting for longtime friends to honor one another and to showcase their pride in Gunnison.

“Everything still centers off the rodeo,” Johnson said. “If you didn’t have the rodeo, none of the other things would have taken place in the style they do now.”

Johnson served on the committee for about 20 years but continued to volunteer his efforts, working on the timed-event crew until a couple years ago. He’s offered his post to the younger generation, opening opportunities for others to learn the importance of Cattlemen’s Days and what it means to serve the community.

Since joining the committee 29 years ago to his status today, Johnson has seen the development of the town’s rodeo. He’s witnessed the growth of the sport from his younger days as a rodeo cowboy, originally from Minnesota, to the professional athletes competing for more prize money than ever. He’s seen his hometown rodeo go from a small event to one of the top events of its size in the country.

Gunnison’s rodeo has an incredible history that has outlived generations of community servants and continues to thrive. Its foundation was laid on the dirt-and-gravel streets along Main Street and has been built into a magnificent showcase of athletic talent and a community’s fortitude to continue that legacy.

met with artist Amanda Sage, internationally renowned for her mystical techniques and psychedelic palette, in her studio at South Main Gunnison. Her creative space, nestled among a food garden, metallic sculptures, fire pits and a view of historic train coaches, sets the scene for her latest body of work. The setting also connects to her ongoing project, the Vision Train — a virtual global art community she launched in early 2020. It serves as an online studio for creatives worldwide to collaborate, share and grow together.

Inside her studio, Sage introduced me to her “Daily Visions ”— small black-and-white tile-shaped paintings. These spontaneous, intuitive studies are part of her regular practice.

“I’m distilling ideas and visions into essence, where one brushstroke can say what 50 could,” she said.

Her larger paintings, rooted in the spontaneity of these studies, center around community and what she calls “vision weaving.”

They explore the interconnectedness of life and culture.

“Science and spirit are not separate — everything is connected,” she said.

These pieces require more time and energy and are often supported and inspired by the Vision Train itself, reflecting her commitment to collaborative creation.

Her work is also woven into the re-branding of Sanctuary Somatics, a flourishing yoga, movement and meditation community located at South Main Gunnison. An essential part of a healthy mind, body and community is to be strong and flexible, Sage believes.

At the heart of Sage’s vision is a desire to illuminate a narrative that addresses the impact of human evolution and the need for a global shift from “me to we.” It’s a call to recognize collective needs over ego-driven pursuits.

“It’s about consciousness,” she said. “A daily act of aligning the self within the broader whole.” Her work invites viewers to consider their role in shaping a more interconnected and compassionate world.

This July, Sage will present her first solo exhibition at the Gunnison Arts Center (GAC), titled "Vision Weaving." Occupying both the upstairs and downstairs galleries, it will feature a range of work — past and present.

“It’s an adventure in introducing myself more deeply to the community,” she said.

continued from 25 The show will include a participatory element and a public workshop. Inspired partly by the Smithsonian’s "Crossroads: Rural Change in America," Sage views this show as a bridge connecting past to future, individual to community, local to global.

“The big mission for us as humans today,” she said, “is to become better stewards in harmony with life.” She believes the artist’s role is to explore, to dream, and to reveal what’s possible for humanity. Her self-portraits, in particular, act as portals for self-reflection.

“They invite the viewer to look inward too, to explore the inner terrain of their own consciousness.” Her overarching question: How may I be of service in creating a world that works for all?

Sage’s work is grounded in the Mischtechnik, a layered painting method she studied under Michael Fuchs in Austria, where she then became his late father Ernst Fuchs’ painting assistant for a decade. The method, Sage at work in her Gunnison studio.

continued from 26 rooted in the early Renaissance, uses layers of transparent glazes to produce glowing, prismatic color — “like stained glass.” Though traditionally using oil and egg tempera, Sage has adapted the technique for acrylics and often finishes with oil and casein in her studio.

It’s a source of pride for Gunnison to now call Amanda Sage a permanent resident. After nearly a decade of traveling and maintaining a studio in Los Angeles, California, she arrived last summer with a U-Haul full of art and the intention to settle with her partner Joe Bob Merritt with whom she shares much 28 | GUNNISON COUNTRY MAGAZINE | 2025

creative inspiration around rooting down to rise up and remember.

“It’s a big shift — from a global platform to a small rural community,” she said. But the transition is intentional. She’s joined the GAC board of directors and is committed to weaving stronger ties between local and global, bringing her experience into the service of the community.

“I want to learn more about the history of this valley and help support a flourishing arts center for the well-being of everyone.”

She sees the GAC as a vital community hub that brings people together across many disciplines — music, dance, theatre, visual arts, martial arts and more.

“It’s already a beacon. I want to see it become a role model for other communities,” she said.

Sage’s focus today is clear: building community, supporting collective dreams and creating safe spaces for creative expression and transformation. Sage sees the Gunnison Arts Center and South Main Gunnison, located only blocks from each other, as Vision Train stations. ummer in the Gunnison Valley is a time of movement and renewal. Rivers swell with snowmelt, trails come alive and visitors arrive, drawn to vast landscapes and high mountain air. Calves take their first steps, blue iris bloom and winter-cracked boulders shift deeper into the canyons.

Aquatic life emerges, shedding shells, taking flight on summer winds.

Whether here for a weekend or a season, the valley offers more than fresh air and open space—it offers transformation, a rhythm of change that invites presence.

Beyond vacation: ReCreation as participation A vacation suggests vacating — stepping away. But what if travel wasn’t about escape, but about arriving fully? Many come searching for something lost or forgotten. But the answer isn’t in speed or spectacle — it’s in slowing down, listening, engaging — not just with mountains and rivers, but with the people, the stories, the rhythm of a place.

Among them are the Tabeguache (Uncompahgre) Ute, the People of Sun Mountain, who lived in the Gunnison and Uncompahgre River valleys long before modern boundaries were drawn. They moved with the seasons, tending to the land as kin. Though displaced, their presence remains — in the rivers, the mountains, the stories that still echo.

To visit with reverence is to acknowledge that heritage — to see beyond what is now and recognize the deeper layers beneath. It is to resist a culture that reduces land to a commodity, something to be mined, not just for resources, but for meaning.

May we return, not to an imagined past, but to an active relationship with land. May we ensure what remains is not just accessible,

but inhabited, not merely by tourists, but by people learning again how to live with the land, rather than just on it.

A history of farming in the Gunnison Country

he Gunnison Country has long had a reputation as one of the coldest areas in the United States, and a place where farming was considered to be an impossibility. Cold temperatures, extremely high elevation and a short growing season appeared to bear that out. However, history tells a different story.

When the mining boom busted, the Cornwalls began to improve their ranch, building a cabin and then an ice house. When their father came to the ranch to live, he decided to build a garden.

continued from 35 anything in the way of vegetables because of the altitude and the consequent cold nights, even in the summer,” Harry Cornwall said in his memoir. However, Father had had a garden in New York and he insisted on having one here. After all sorts of sarcastic and hilarious prophecies, it was started. The results were a revelation to us as well as to the entire ranching community. Ranchers came from 20 miles away on horseback to see our garden before they would believe the stories as to its success."

Aside from a few potatoes and turnips, no vegetables had been grown in the Gunnison Country.

continued from 36 wonderful. It was virgin soil, had never been cultivated and was very rich."

In 1881, the Gunnison Country had to be sustainable. Beef and wild game such as deer, elk, geese, ducks and sage hens were available and most ranchers raised hogs and chickens. The many streams of this mountain region were filled with trout, which were caught daily. Every rancher had dairy cows, and in 1887 a large log creamery and cheese factory was built as a cooperative among Ohio Creek ranchers near Castleton. As much as 1,800 pounds of milk were received daily at the creamery.

"The big round cheeses are being turned out at the rate of several a day,” reported the local Gunnison newspaper. So much cheese was made that some was shipped out on the Denver & South Park Railroad. Unfortunately, the creamery burned down in 1893. Gunnison got its own creamery in 1892, located on South Main Street near the Denver & Rio Grande railroad tracks. The capacity of the creamery was 1,000 pounds of butter per week. Right across from the creamery was the Appleton Grinding mill, which could grind 25 bushels an hour, great for ranchers who now could get their oats, barley and rye ground up for feed.

Many of the ranchers made their own butter. Once, in 1883 Harry Cornwall went to buy butter from neighboring Ohio Creek rancher John Bohm, an old Austrian. It was a cold day in January when Bohm took Cornwall to an outside shed where the butter was kept.

“I noticed a peculiar-shaped something covered with burlap lying on a bench and asked John what it was," Cornwall said.

‘That's my wife's cousin — he died last week and the ground is froze too hard to bury him, so we wait until spring,’ said Bohm. ‘He’ll keep alright this winter.’"

The shocked Cornwall made some excuse about not needing butter at the time and made a fast exit. He commented in his memoir, “We bought no more butter from John until spring.”

Potatoes Powderhorn rancher, “Potato Henry” Rudolph became famous statewide in 1881 when he raised 120,000 pounds of Early Rose potatoes for sale. Rudolph continued raising potatoes for the next 20 years. The major local producer of potatoes however, was the Haymaker family, whose farm was seven miles north of Gunnison across from the current Lost Canyon Resort. In 1907, Zilba and Tully Haymaker used a Leffel water turbine to pump Gunnison River water 200 feet from

continued from 37 the river and onto a mesa on the east side of the stream, rising 75 feet in the process. The 65-acre irrigated field turned out 300 tons of potatoes.

Lettuce Five miles south of Sargents on Tomichi Creek, the Templeton family raised and shipped head lettuce on their ranch for 10 years, but the deer and porcupines damaged the heads so badly they stopped raising it except for their own use. Not far away, early ranchers along Marshall Creek grew so much lettuce they shipped by rail to Denver — needing much ice to keep it cool until it arrived.

Strawberries Amazingly, commercial strawberries were grown in the Gunnison country at over 8,000 feet near Sargents. J. Roy Ficks built a strawberry planter using an Allis Chalmers garden tractor the engine in the rear. Two hundred rows were planted, each about 50 feet long. The plants were adjacent to Tomichi Creek where they could be irrigated. Roy's son, Will, recalled how the weeding had to be done by July 4 or none of the family would be able to travel to Gunnison to see the rodeo or enjoy the carnival.

Soda pop Mushrooms Ed McGuffey owned a Tomichi Valley ranch east of Gunnison where he grew mushrooms for sale. Burrowing into the hillside near his house, McGuffey built a mushroom cellar where the temperature varied from 55 to 70 degrees. He noted that mushrooms were one of the few crops which must be kept away from sunshine.” Crops matured every 8 months and he sold the yield to a firm in Toronto, Canada until the onset of World War II. Honey In the 1970s a Montrose farmer raised bees on Lee Spann's ranch just west of Gunnison.

Clover in the hay fields was perfect for the bees and clover honey was excellent. There were about 20 hives on the ranch, but clover did not appear every year, so after a a few years the hives were taken out. For over 20 years beginning in 1992, Angelo and Anna May Guerreri raised bees just north of Gunnison. They had up to 24 hives, 80,000 bees and produced three quarters of a ton of honey a year.

The Gunnison Country also briefly had a soda industry during the dark days of the Depression. It was based out of the Powderhorn soda springs in 1931. The springs were naturally carbonated. Lemon, cherry or other flavorings were added to make soda pop. In 1931, Charles and George Duree started a bottling works in Powderhorn. They hauled their product by wagon to Gunnison and sold it in the saloons to locals and railroad passengers. Despite early success, they soon gave up due to a lack of outlets, bad transportation and a sparse local population.

In the early days of the Gunnison country farming and agriculture were not only necessities for life, but a major industry. Sustainability was the key to survival then. n (Dr. Duane Vandenbusche is professor emeritus of history at Western Colorado University.)

or the past 10 years, Gunnison Valley Animal Welfare League (GVAWL) has been ensuring the animals of Gunnison find their forever homes and forever families. One of the most beloved aspects of Gunnison is its pets, and their importance in everyone’s day-to-day life. By connecting people and pets, GVAWL improves the health, well-being and quality of the community while promoting companionship and compassion.

“Gunnison is very pet-oriented,” GVAWL Manager Tamara Spezze said. “You cannot pass a vehicle and not see a dog sticking its head out the window. There are wonderful pet owners, and a wonderful pet community.

Everywhere you go, there are pets out, and the shelter’s here for the people just as much as the animals.”

In placing pets, they provide people with a caring companion free of complications, and pets with a loving place to call home.

Spezze is GVAWL’s first full-time shelter manager and has been working there for the past five years. Before living in Gunnison, she had a pet-care business in Salida called Wags and Tails.

“I’m an animal person by nature,” she said.

GVAWL is fully sustained by the community and its support. There is a volunteer cat team and a volunteer dog team who help take care of and love the animals, as well as help with maintaining the facility. The funding for the shelter is a mix of government funds, donations and money raised in fundraisers, showing the level of support and love Gunnison holds for its pets.

There have been many instances where the community stepped up in order to care for our pets. One of these was the case of Wink.

infection was extremely expensive. In an impressive show of support, many members of the Gunnison community banded together in order to raise the funds. After a very successful surgery, Wink is now part of a loving family and free of further medical complications.

There are many ways that animals can end up in shelters, and one of these is when they become strays. In the United States, 56% of the animals that end up in shelters are strays, making this a very important aspect of the shelter. GVAWL keeps space open at all times to accommodate any strays that are found. It is extremely important to have this space for strays, as the climate of Gunnison makes it difficult for animals to survive outside in the winter. When strays are found, they are cared for by volunteers while an effort is made to find their families and get them back home as soon as possible. If it is impossible to locate their owners, the pets are put up for adoption.

Another main reason animals end up in shelters is the lack of pet-friendly housing in Gunnison. There are many times when living situations change or complications arise and

families are unable to keep their beloved pets because of their inability to find a place to live that allows pets. The result of this is that these animals end up at the shelter.

Only 52% of U.S. animal shelters are “nokill” facilities, and GVAWL is one of them.

This means that they do their best to ensure the adoption of all animals, from a twomonth-old dog to a 12-year-old cat. This is important as it provides every animal with the chance that it deserves in the safest way possible. All animals have undergone the appropriate vaccinations and procedures for their age and are incredibly safe. This improves the overall health of the community as it prevents the spread of diseases and lowers the risk of overpopulation.

GVAWL is also certified by Pet Animal Care Facilities Act, which ensures the health and safety of the animals and facility through frequent checkups and visits. Through the law, GVAWL does everything possible to provide safety to people and pets in the community.

(Editor’s note: Below is a Q&A between Phillip Virden, owner of the Mountaineer Theatre since its inception in 1975, and Bennett Levine, manager of the Mountaineer and currently a student at Western Colorado University.)

When and why did you start a movie theatre in Lake City?

A part of my degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas was in film studies in the 1970s. I was a volunteer projectionist for the school’s film festival. When I moved to Lake City, I had no idea that that experience would evolve into my building and operating a movie theatre in a town with fewer than 100 people. However, when I was working at The Sportsman for Bill and Ruthanna Hall, Chick Mendenhall, a local Lake City man, came to the Halls and told me about the Mountaineer Theatre in Gunnison being for sale. The Halls and I saw the need for a movie theatre for the community and especially its young people.

We put together a group of people which included the Halls, John and Ann Parker, some others, to make an offer to buy the theatre. Soon we had a contract to purchase the Mountaineer in 1974.

continued from 47 Where was the Mountaineer in Gunnison?

It was located on Main Street. Today it is the building where Rocky Mountain Frames and Embroidered Sportswear are. Frank Poye and his wife were the owners of the Mountaineer.

Included in the sale were two 1930s projectors, a screen with curtain, over one hundred seats and a vintage popcorn machine.

Mr. Poye trained me on the 1930s Simplex carbon arc projectors. I remember the movie I trained in was the classic film, "Doctor Zhivago." Zhivago had a lot of winter scenes from Russia’s frigid Siberian region. When I walked out of the theatre that night, I thought I was still in Siberia as the temperature in Gunnison that night was 37 degrees below zero.

When did you open the theatre and with what film?

We opened in September of 1975, two weeks after I had married Carolyn Armstrong from Wichita, Kansas. We showed "Young Frankenstein" for our first film, which is now a classic

continued from 48 and which we have shown three times since that debut. Carolyn managed the concession area while I was working in the projection room in those early days.

How did those first years go?

It was incredibly challenging. It was hard for a new theater to book good movies, so we had to settle for such films as "The Giant Spider Invasion," "The Great Waldo Pepper," and "Aloha Bobby and Rose." Then, in 1977, we had our first sellout when we booked a film called "Star Wars." I will never forget the feeling that night when everyone was mesmerized by the opening music of Star Wars, the exciting story, all the way to its ending credits.

Where did you find your staff?

We hired teenagers from Lake City — a tradition that we still do today. It is usually the kid’s first-ever job, so they learn the basics of coming to work on time, doing an excellent job, and learning to be courteous to our customers.

Today, those first-time employees are adults, and they bring their own families to the Mountaineer now.

I hear people talk about “the magic of the Mountaineer.” Why do you think that is?

Certainly, it is extremely rewarding to hear this, but it is hard to describe. I think it is a combination of a lot of things … our own passion for bringing good movies here, our commitment to provide an affordable place to have a night out (especially for families), our young staff treating our customers well, providing great hot popcorn, and presenting a film in the best manner possible.

Additionally, something else that adds to this “magic” are the large works of art of classic movie stars such as Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Humphrey Bogart, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Charlie Chaplin that are in our auditorium. It is our understanding that Pat Gerace, a Western student, did these wonderful paintings in the 1970s. Unfortunately, we have never been able to find Pat to thank him.

What are some of the most popular movies that you have shown at the Mountaineer?

So many to choose from! Besides the Star Wars films (we’ve shown all of them), a few others that come to mind are "Indiana Jones," "The Wind and the Lion," "Toy Story," "Jurassic Park," "The Lion King," both Top Gun movies, "ET," "Forrest Gump," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," to name a few. Who owns the Mountaineer today?

Carolyn and I became sole owners of the Mountaineer about 30 years ago. Since then, my daughters Lily and Dasha have worked there.

To this day, I enjoy popping popcorn and welcoming customers.

It is remarkable that the Mountaineer is still under your ownership and that you have been able to have a cinema survive in this small town for 50 years. What do you think will be the Mountaineer’s future?

We are not sure, but we are hoping to find a way to keep the Mountaineer open for years to come. Despite the competition from such streaming outlets as Netflix and Amazon Prime, people still enjoy going out and seeing a movie on the big screen.

S

tepping into the sleek modern ambience of Blackstock Bistro on Tomichi Avenue is consistently a highlight of my week and one of Gunnison’s peak culinary experiences. This tasteful high-end restaurant has wooden accents and dark curtained walls, as well as a mural depicting “Summer” by Alphonse Mucha that always fills me with anticipation. Each meal here is a celebration, every dish a finely crafted culinary journey which celebrates owner Luke Martin’s dedication to quality, flavor and his careful orchestration of ingredients.

The aroma of garlic and herbs fills the air, and the chatter of diners creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. There is usually a lively crowd gathered at the bar and the menu is something of a cross between a French American and Asian style bistro and boasts an assortment of shareable small plates and sides, as well as a diverse selection of entrées.

Seasonal menu changes are made every spring and fall when Martin rebuilds the wine and cocktail list and updates the food. On Saturdays, after dinner service continues late with live music or karaoke utilizing a projector screen from 9 p.m. until midnight.

There are plenty of steak and beef choices like burger, prime ribeye and Kobe beef tomahawk for meat lovers, as well as New Zealand lamb. But Martin, the owner and chef, continues his pride and background in cutting fish and has always kept a parallel focus on seafood, such as buttery lobster rolls, salmon and plump oversized shrimp currently served on fettuccini in a creamy chorizo sauce. Yum! The bistro fries are a trademark — “fries worth fighting for” — and servers leave the platters on the table for guests to relish the crumbs of potato, truffle, herbs de Provence and Parmesan. Martin estimates they produce “over 6,000 pounds of hand cut fries per annum.” All the dishes are meticulously presented.

Over coffee, Martin shared his plans for the summer with me. Firstly, he will reinstate sushi nights on Sundays and maintain his sushi rolling background with the fine quality fish flown in weekly from Hawaii. Sushi nights will feature a fixed menu with nigiri, sashimi and sushi rolls as well as hot and cold sake.

The preset menu includes many options but is essentially an appetizer course, followed by fish specials, then traditional and specialty rolls all prepared by Luke himself. He also

There are three concepts under the umbrella of Blackstock Bistro: regular bistro fare weekly, ramen night on Wednesdays and, soon, sushi on Sundays. This changes things up for regulars and visitors. Ramen night features an Asian twist, with the pork belly noodle bowl being a signature dish and tuna poke and “monkey ballz” being lighter options.

Another change Martin outlines is the north-facing outdoor patio at Blackstock is to become a more casual snacks and drinks bar with space for hanging out rather than formal dining. It can also be a party venue with live 58 | GUNNISON COUNTRY MAGAZINE | 2025

Martin suddenly showed me a logo with a bird on it and leaned forward to share his biggest summer news: he is opening a new bar soon at 110 E. Georgia Ave. which will have a large sunny south-facing sidewalk patio. The bar is to be named the Sage Grouse Lounge and this venue will focus on lifestyle with a large custom built seating unit which holds fourteen people, two pool tables, a dart board and a golf simulator.

This will be a great venue for locals, guests and Western students with free popcorn as you enter and pizza and bar snacks for purchase. The place will open daily at 3 p.m. and on Friday and Saturdays stay open till 2 a.m.

Martin looks forward to hosting sports fans come football season and will open at 11 a.m. on the weekends starting in the fall.

The décor is inspired by the Sage Grouse itself, with black wainscotting, dark green walls, wooden floors and golden light fixtures.

The bar is to have dark green diagonal “feathered” tiles. Martin envisions football fan

cheering a game, pool and golf leagues, open mic nights, karaoke and music enlivening the local entertainment scene.

“This will be a perfect place for happy hour, before and after dinner,” he said. “Families will be welcome to bring kids in to play golf and college students will appreciate the location, which is close to campus.”

One pool table will have free access and the other will be available to rent by the hour.

The venue is a large space, about as big as Blackstock, with a 100-person capacity, 80 inside and potentially 20 on the patio, pending weather.

Martin sees the possibility for synergy where his two businesses can co-ordinate.

The Sage Grouse can be a venue for parties catered by Blackstock Bistro, for example.

Originally from Minnesota, Martin spent many years in Crested Butte working in kitchens there, then attended culinary school in Denver and rolled sushi at restaurants on the side. In 2014, he moved back and opened Blackstock Bistro. He and his wife Ginger are celebrating 11 years of ownership. They have a three-and-a-half-year-old son and more recent baby daughter.

Martin recognizes there can be challenges in local catering. Staffing is crucial and his aim is always to invest in his people and put them in a position to succeed. With this mindset, he has attracted a stable and hospitable team. What he loves about this area is the small tightly knit community, and the enjoyment of the outdoors which Gunnison offers. He enjoys golfing, floating the river, dirt and mountain biking, inevitably “accumulating toys along the way” and just playing with his kids outside when he has time away from his demanding schedule. n

n a brisk February day in 1938, a community dream manifested atop the wind-whipped summit of Marshall Pass. Members of the Salida Ski Club rattled up the Denver and Rio Grande railway for 5-mile ski runs down the Continental Divide. They lugged 7-foot-long wooden planks in the train cars, and once they summited, were met with the joyous sounds of polka music and singalongs. In those days, the club paid a dime for each train ride back up the pass.

But locals dreamed of a future hill to join the likes of regional ski areas Winter Park, Wolf Creek and Pioneer. In under a year, Monarch Mountain was founded at the crest of the divide, just 12 miles north of Marshall Pass. It has been independently owned and operated ever since.

Today, 86 years after the birth of Monarch, locals await another milestone. In December 2025, the mountain plans to unveil a new lift, opening up 377 acres of new terrain, 10 runs and 1,000 additional vertical feet in the No Name Basin area. The expansion will crown Monarch as the only ski resort in the country to access both sides of the Continental Divide.

“Skiing Monarch is a state of mind,” said Gunnison Valley historian Duane Vandenbusche. “It’s the high elevation, the blue skies, spectacular runs and family-oriented environment that makes it such a special place.”

Monarch, majority-owned by Bob Nicolls since 2002, began tree removal, restoration work and erosion control in July 2024. By using a cut-to-length loading machine and additional equipment to haul lumber, runs began to weave along the coniferous hillside. The construction crews then smoothed down stumps and debris in a process called mastication. By last fall, Monarch revealed seven future runs, and a site for a future, fixed-grip triple ski lift.

No Name Basin sits near the top of the continental divide.

This spring, Monarch will finish cutting trees and masticating the remaining runs. Then Skytrac, a ski lift company based in Utah, will begin installing the lift, which is scheduled to open at the end of this year. Monarch also plans to build a ski patrol outpost and warming hut near the bottom terminal, expected to open in the summer of 2026.

Situated just beyond the western edge of Monarch’s extreme Mirkwood terrain, the No Name Basin drops off into a sea of steep, tree-cut chutes. The future top terminal will be located behind the Shagnasty run, near the top of the Breezeway Lift. It will also be accessible from the top of the Panororama Lift.

“I like to say we’ll be skiing where both oceans begin,” Monarch Sales Manager Eva Egbert said. “It’s a bit of a stretch, but skiing both sides of the Continental Divide is super exciting to me as a European. It’s like we’re skiing both sides of the world.”

At the edge of the No Name rim, skiers are met with a terrace overlooking Monarch’s previously inaccessible western reaches. The Tomichi Dome looms prominently over the sagebrush plains. In the distance, Uncompahgre Peak rules over the San Juans, while Gunnison sits protected by vast plains. The new trails snake through the trees, accessing both groomed and mogul terrain and glade access. While most of the runs will receive an intermediate rating, the No Name lift run will offer a steep, ungroomed trail and earn a black diamond badge.

— Eva Egbert, Monarch Mountain “If ever there was an area in the world that was made for skiing, it’s Monarch,” Vandenbusche said. “Elevation 11,000, 350 inches of snow each year, steep terrain, dry champagne powder and right on the doorstep of the Saguache Range.”

The plan to expand into the No Name Basin persisted for over three years, but was de-

layed by the pandemic and the location’s rich historical significance. The mountain is home to one of three prehistoric “game drive” sites in Colorado, dating back to 3,000 B.C. Ancient tribes used stone embankments, called game drives, to snare deer, mountain sheep and elk.

Archaeologists have since discovered scattered hunting encampments, making Monarch the southernmost game drive in the state.

With guidance from U.S. Forest Service archaeologists, Monarch designed the trail systems and lift terminal locations around these heritage sites. The crews conducted the first wave of tree cutting over a layer of snow, and will begin the lift installation in similar conditions to prevent soil disruption.

The mountain’s connection to history is likely to seep into the future lift and run names in the No Name area, Egbert said. Vandenbusche has already recommended a handful of ideas, harkening back to the prehistoric hunting site, the nearby Madonna Mine and the Salida Ski Club’s railroad trips.

“We have a lot of great beginner areas and advanced terrain, but Monarch really needed more intermediate, cruisy groomer stuff and that is exactly what this project provides,” said Monarch Ski Patroller Zach Moore. “It’s an entirely different feel in No Name.” n (Alex McCrindle is Sports Editor of the Gunnison Country Times.)

Western students build custom weather station to advance climate research

T

he weather can be difficult to predict anywhere, but especially in a high mountain valley, where the sun and elevation hold unreasonable sway over the temperature. A short drive in any direction on a winter day can yield swings of several degrees.

And even on the coldest days, just how cold it is usually depends on where you are.

It’s one of those quirks of nature that most

people barely notice. But for scientists watching for clues about things like the speed of spring snowmelt or the likelihood of a forest catching fire, that information is critical to understanding the nuances of a complex and changing system. In the Gunnison Valley, situated squarely in the Colorado River watershed, where it will contribute water to a system that supports more than 40 million people, those gaps in information can lead to uncertainty with far-reaching effects.

continued from 65 Ian Breckheimer is a landscape ecologist at Western Colorado University and Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) studying the many microclimates of the Gunnison Basin. Along with dozens of other research scientists who converge on RMBL in the summer months, he needs high-quality, long-term data sets, collected in person or remotely, for his research.

Unfortunately, the remote weather stations that do exist don’t provide the detailed data scientists need to put the finest point possible on their understanding of the system.

“We have super complex patterns of weather and surface properties,” Breckheimer said. “Right now, we're working with a lot of weather models and a lot of climate models that don't do a great job of representing those [subtleties], and that makes it really hard to 66 | GUNNISON COUNTRY MAGAZINE | 2025

translate either a weather forecast or a climate forecast into conditions on the ground.”

To build a weather station that would suit his needs, he enlisted the help of five mechanical engineering students at Western’s Rady School of Computer Science and Engineering — Samuel Buono, Samuel Koster, Oliver Bennett, Max Olson and Keegan Jacoves — who took it on as their senior capstone project, with Jayden Omi and Tyler Baker as post-baccalaureate advisors.

Their task was to build a freestanding weather station tall enough to extend above any potential snowfall, yet light enough for a few people to pack into remote locations.

In addition to collecting and storing a wide range of observational data — from temperature and humidity to wind speed and direction to solar and reflected radiation — it would need to operate untouched for five to six months in the extremes of the Rocky

Mountain backcountry.

Throughout 2024, the team researched and tinkered with different designs before building a prototype. They sourced and ordered the material they needed for the supporting structure, as well as all the sensors and hardware to collect and store the data securely. When they landed on a design that met the criteria, the team moved ahead with manufacturing the weather station from the ground up.

“I remember telling my parents about it, and my dad, who studied mechanical engineering in college, was surprised that we got to design and build the structure entirely ourselves,” Keegan said. “He thought we were going to be given a design and then work with that. But we did everything.”

continued from 66 up and running on campus. In the spring, they found that having the ground repeatedly freeze and thaw caused the structure’s supporting guy wires to work their way loose. Otherwise, the design is a success that Western scientists and engineers can improve on as new technology becomes available.

Breckheimer sees opportunities for a future group of students to add satellite transmission capabilities that would allow researchers to collect data remotely.

With the troves of data coming from the weather stations, scientists will be able to build computer models of the climate in the Gunnison Basin that will result in better weather forecasts, and a better understanding of how climate and climate change are impacting the region.

“I would love to have up to a dozen [weather stations] deployed in the next year or two,” Breckheimer said. “The near-term goal is to understand more about all the different processes that lead snow to accumulate in the winter and go away in the spring, the ground surface heating up, the plants coming out, and all of the different physical processes that are involved in those seasonal transitions.” n (Seth Mensing is the Western Colorado University PR & communications manager.)

unnison, Colorado is, by anyone’s definition, an outdoor recreation hub. People travel from all over the world to experience the trails, the views and the feelings of wonder this incredible place provides. continued from 71 needs, wants and spirit of the Gunnison community as it has taken shape over the last 20 years. According Director, Daniel Vollendorf, the Gunnison Rec Center has been built in phases so far.

• 2005: The first phase was completed and included the gymnasium, climbing wall, kitchen, conference rooms, game room, locker rooms and the parks and rec offices.

• 2009: Following the rec tax ballot measure passing in 2007, the aquatics center was built which added more locker room space, family cabanas, the aquatics center offices, a six-lane lap pool, a warm water leisure pool, and three slides.

• 2015: The senior center addition was completed.

• 2022: The game room was renovated to a fitness room with weights and cardiovascular machines.

And now the center is on the edge of something new, evolving alongside the community’s goals.

“The Rec Department is currently kicking off a master planning effort and the third phase of the rec center,” Vollendorf said.

“What that looks like will be vetted throughout that process, but will likely include more fitness equipment, an elevated walking track

He added the center will be taking a hard look at ways to improve the facility … after debt service is paid off in 2032.

“The master plan is always a great time to check in and make sure that our goals are aligned with what the community wants,” Rec Center Manager Faith Saltmarsh said.

“It’s a great opportunity to reach out to the community, make sure we all have the same goals and wants and desires, and then really find out what those are and how to creatively make that happen.”

Programs + Senior Center As the rec center continues to evolve, it’s in the everyday moments where it comes to life. Through thoughtful programming designed to support the various needs of the community to being a hub of information, it is constantly buzzing with people of all ages finding their daily rhythm.

“Working here, you get to see so many people from all walks of life from our community,” Vollendorf said. “Young families with small children, seniors, active adults, etc. If I'm ever having a bad day I can walk around the facility and see kids and adults recreating 74 | GUNNISON COUNTRY MAGAZINE | 2025

and enjoying the facility.”

The diverse youth programming offered throughout the seasons accommodates the varying schedules of families year-round.

Much of the programming also provides progressive levels that support continued learning and growth for those that want it — from parent-tot swim time all the way to the Stingray Swim Club or from Tumble Tots to the CARA competitive gymnastics program.

And there is also plenty of space allowing kids to simply explore what they enjoy without the pressure of competition. And not all of it happens inside the rec center. Youth programs extend outdoors too, with opportunities like cross-country skiing and ice skating in the winter, to bike races, tennis and dozens of organized sports on the fields maintained by the Parks and Rec department in the warmer months.

And although there are wonderful staff members and coaches throughout the center, it also takes a village, quite literally.

Jodi Lindner, a community member who moved to Gunnison in 2014 has taken an active role in the programs since her kids were young. What began as volunteering to coach her own child’s soccer team quickly became so much more.

“It takes the whole community, so many parents coach the programs, and many community members are there to make it all work,” she said.

It’s not just kids who benefit from the rec center’s offerings. There are plenty of adult programs for any ability level — from tennis and “Adult Never-Evers” mountain biking, to recreational softball and volleyball leagues. Group fitness classes are also free for members, and, as Saltmarsh notes, “We have our small and mighty fitness area. We hope to have a bigger space one day, but for now we’ve always got people in there.”

In addition, the rec center hosts meals to seniors and Boomers & Beyond, providing a place to connect for seniors. Those, coupled with the fitness aspect of the Rec Center, created the Senior Center, a vital space for sharing meals, connecting with peers, hosting lifeskills workshops and staying active for Gunnison’s older population.

“You find your own community here,” said Jane Knight, after a packed-full senior fitness class on a Wednesday morning. “I’m in a quilter group. I’m in a knitting group. And I’m in the exercise group. My husband is in a nordic skiing group. It’s a wonderful way to stay connected. I think as people age they become

disconnected — you want to sit down and do your own thing, but you really have to get out and socialize. We all talk to each other before class and plan things outside of class. It's really wonderful.”

“We have seven hike leaders who are amazing and all seniors,” said Senior Center Director Elizabeth Gillis. “Three retired park rangers, another one who helped build half the trails here, and across the board we have wildflower expertise, geology expertise, history expertise … our hikes are more than just going on a hike. It’s a total learning experience.”

The senior center also presents workshops and informational speakers on various topics that affect the lives of seniors and help them move into the next phase of life.

“You don’t think about that stuff, you just live your life and life goes on,” Knight said.

“Then you turn 80, and you don't really think of those things. But they bring it forward in a good way and say you know it's time you thought about these things. It's pretty interesting and it gets you thinking.”

“Visitors are always welcome,” said Saltmarsh. “It's so much fun to have people walk in and see the surprise that we have such a great facility for such a small town. It’s a nice place for people to stop in and get in a swim or a workout or even a shower from people camping and hunting … It’s just one of the ways to extend our community to visitors.”

One thing is clear about the Gunnison Rec Center: It is more than just a building. It is a reflection of the community itself. It is a place where routines are formed, where learning is fun, fitness is prioritized, and where, no matter the phase of life you’re in, everyone belongs.

And as it continues to evolve, it is the people — from the staff to the coaches to the members to the kids — who make it a place of community connection.

“This facility is a treasure for the Gunnison Valley,” said Vollendorf. “And we will work hard to maintain it and make improvements as well.” n

Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad exhibit finds new life at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum

BY DAVID PRIMUS In the late 1870s, the Gunnison Country was beginning to boom — ranchland was being homesteaded, gold fever was in the air and quality coal was discovered near Crested Butte.

But it was hard to travel here or get supplies — a typical trip to Gunnison from Denver took multiple days via wagon or stagecoach.

lucrative mountain markets. They were fierce competitors, each trying to reach boom towns first. Both were on the way to Leadville, reaching Buena Vista in 1880. They also set their sights on Gunnison, the D&RG arriving in 1881, the DSP&P a year later.

In 1889 the DSP&P went bankrupt and was renamed the Denver, Leadville & Gunnison. In 1898 it also went bankrupt and became part of the Colorado & Southern. By 1937, the C&S had given up on the Gunnison Country, leaving the D&RG as the only railroad. The D&RG continued successfully until cars and trucks became cheaper and faster; the tracks were finally pulled up in 1954. The DSP&P and its successors faded from view and most people aren't familiar with this fantastic railroad. When visiting the Pioneer Museum, the train on display is D&RG, as are the water tower, Sargents Depot, and most of the artifacts inside. The DSP&P is hardly mentioned.

Thanks to a generous donation by Dan Windolph, all that changed in the spring of 2025 — when he donated his DSP&P model railroad scenery, buildings, engines, cars and artifacts.

The museum is providing a railroad boxcar to host the display. Volunteers have been working hard to move the items and reconstruct them at the museum for over a year.

Windolph is a master modeler, creating an O-Scale (1/4" to the foot) layout in his basement in Nathrop, Colorado for the past 40 years. It depicted almost every narrow-gauge mountain railroad in Colorado. In addition to the DSP&P and its successors, he modeled the D&RG, the Colorado Central, the Rio Grande Southern and the Gilpin Tramway, to name a few. The layout was huge, taking up the entire basement. One building, the Argo Mill in Silver Plume, is more than 3 feet high!

One day last spring I received a call from Dan, my longtime friend. His wife had fallen ill and could no longer live at altitude — they had to sell their beloved house in Nathrop. Would the Pioneer Museum be interested in his Gunnison area DSP&P models and scenery? He had written and published many articles about his layout in several issues of a popular modeler's magazine, The Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette. After the museum board reviewed the articles and photos, they enthusiastically accepted the donation. I agreed to facilitate the move and reconstruction.

Was I in for a surprise!

I was disappointed to learn that a museum in Denver had agreed to move and display the entire layout, but after taking the first load to Denver they decided they no longer wanted it. continued from 79 plaster, it disintegrated on the trip. Windolph didn't even know if the pieces still existed. He contacted the museum, and found out that although in bad shape, the pieces were there.

I drove to Denver and came back with a bag full of broken parts and plaster. Over several months, I painstakingly reassembled the roundhouse. That was my first challenge, and I am happy to say, it was a success.

Next to move was Windolph’s favorite part of the layout, the Palisades cliff and wall leading to the Alpine Tunnel.

To get over the Continental Divide to reach Gunnison, the DSP&P built a high-altitude tunnel near the top of the divide, then graded from there down to Pitkin, Parlin and into Gunnison. It was quite a project, causing them to finally arrive in Gunnison in 1882, a year later than planned. The D&RG had won the race to Gunnison as they had built over Marshall Pass, an easier undertaking. One of the challenges for the DSP&P was building a huge, hand stacked, granite block retaining wall along a cliff — the Palisades. After existing for over 130 years, an avalanche recently took out part of this wall, blocking access to the tunnel site for visitors.

The U.S. Forest Service has repaired the wall and the rough road to the Alpine Tunnel is again open during the summer.

Windolph, several friends and I worked to extract the cliff and wall from the layout.

Unfortunately, the eight-foot-long plaster cliff disintegrated in a cloud of dust! Windolph said he had the original mold, and that I could easily recreate the cliff.

“Maybe you could recreate it, but I have never done anything with plaster!” I said.

Luckily, the plaster retaining wall was extracted intact. A few weeks later, Mike, a volunteer from the museum, and I drove to Nathrop to get the modeled wall. We placed it carefully 80 | GUNNISON COUNTRY MAGAZINE | 2025

on a trailer and headed home, stopping in Salida for lunch. Getting out of the truck, we saw that the wall and scenery lay in the bottom of the trailer in hundreds of pieces! Although I felt it was a complete loss, we picked up most of the plaster wall and put it in a bucket. After getting back to Gunnison, I laid the pieces out on my garage floor and discovered it was almost 90% there. I was optimistic it could be reconstructed.

Windolph had given the mold for the wall to a friend who gladly shipped it to me. With the molds in hand, I cast in plaster the entire cliff and the missing parts of the wall. I then carefully glued the many pieces of the wall together.

Using stains and paints Dan gave me, I carefully colored the new parts to match the existing sections. After another month or so I was satisfied with the reconstruction of the wall and cliff.

The next task was relatively easy but took another two months — rebuilding the layout and scenery inside the boxcar. I had done some modeling before, but scenery was new to me.

Dan sent me some old railroad scenery books and happily helped me with dozens of phone calls to learn techniques. What fun I had!

This spring, the final touches were made, the artifacts and interpretation hung on the walls, and lighting installed.

I

thought I could make it past the Douglas fir branch that blocked my Toyota 4Runner’s progress up a four-wheel drive road to my favorite cutthroat creek.

But the scraping sound told me otherwise.

The obdurate branch played the side of my vehicle like an errant tonearm, scraping across a vintage Jimmy Hendricks album. Oh well, that’s what rubbing compound is for.

Besides, I really needed to get away. Things were tough.

The owner of the house we’d been renting just called to say we had 30 days to move. He was selling. With two kids, three dogs and one wife, I was in a panic, even making calls at work for the past two weeks. The boss was starting to notice. We couldn’t afford to lose that, too. My wife knew I was tied in knots.

“Shouldn’t Cow Creek be fishing good about now?” she asked me early that weekend morning.

I kissed her. “You sure?”

“When times get tough, the tough go fishing,” she said.

The next 100 yards weren’t much better, so I got out, sawed off the branch, and backed down to a small clearing. In three more minutes, I was hiking the last quarter mile up the road with my fishing gear in hand. The pass between Cimmaron and Ridgeway hid a trove of seldom-visited cutthroat streams and was the backdrop for the original “True Grit”, with John Wayne. The two-hour drive from Gunnison was worth it to me. I had some sorting out to do.

I crested the last rise and viewed my favorite trout stream. The cascades and riffles looked like spilled diamonds calling me to unexpected treasure. My breathing slowed.

My perspective widened.

Then I saw it, not more than 20 paces ahead, tucked behind a handsome currant bush, already flush with berries. It was a beater Willys jeep, right out of a MASH episode, evicting my solitude. Really?

A few steps later, I saw torn seats, a rabbit’s foot dangling from a key chain and a crumpled pack of cigarettes trying to fall out of the rust hole in the floorboard. Oddly, a satellite phone leaned against the gear shift. I looked upstream for the guy ruining my hiatus.

He was easy to spot, not more than three holes upstream, leaning against a rock with his boots in the creek, his rod dormant behind him. Tousled gray hair escaped from his hat. He held a black rectangle close to his face, left forefinger swiping across the screen.

I remembered how understanding my wife had been and decided to be polite and ask if I could go upstream a good stretch to leave his water undisturbed. I came up behind him.

Before I made a noise, he said, “Sit down, you’ll want to see these.”

A bit shocked at myself, I laid my rod in the grass, took two steps into the water and leaned against his rock so I could see his phone. He didn’t look up.

“Cast across that riffle to the little gem of pocket water,” he said. “I want one last picture.”

I hesitated, but with his free hand he urged me to cast, pointing to the obvious holding water. So, I stripped out some line, made one false cast, and dappled the fly into the tiny pool. A flash, a tug and a frenetic fight later, a resplendent native trout swam at our feet, tethered to my line with a fluffy dry fly in its mouth.

“Do me a favor, would you?” he said. “Hold it just out of the water. I’ll zoom in from here.”

He showed me the picture, then lowered his phone and stared at the horizon line.

Silence. Another beat of time.

“What did you mean, ‘One last picture?’” I asked.

He pulled back the top part of his shirt so I could see his chemo port. My wife was a nurse, so I knew this guy was in the middle of a tough battle.

“Last round, last cast, last breath — last is last,” he said. “I decided this was my favorite last.”

“And the other pictures?”

“Fish from all over the world,” he said. He

angled the phone toward me and repeated the finger-swipe motion. “This char came from above the arctic circle,” he said. “Do you see a little of that same orange in this tiny cutthroat?” The cutthroat’s gill plate certainly had a similar story to tell. I unhooked my fluffy dry fly from the cutthroat’s lip. The next photo was already on the screen.

“And this peacock bass from Brazil.” He was becoming more animated. That flank color — the yellow green could not have been a better match. Amazon monsters and Colorado dinksters? They couldn’t possibly have anything in common. I got the feeling he was getting to the point, albeit with the flourish of a dead man walking. Besides, I was digging this little world tour of exotic fly fishing destinations, places I’d never afford to go, not and buy a house in our mountain valley.

“And here’s a mahi-mahi from Mexico,” he said, fingers already expanding the image to focus on the fish. The blues and yellows and greens mesmerized me. It wasn’t a cutthroat from Owl Creek Pass, but it certainly had the same exotic, bucket-list color wheel. “Want to see my all-time favorite?”

I have never knowingly said no to a man’s last request. He swiped aggressively for a few seconds, backtracked, and then pulled up a picture of a fish that I’d never seen before.

“It’s a pompano from Oman.” He pointed to the eye. “See how it looks at the water just like our little cutthroat?” He swiped backwards so I could compare.

Who fly fishes in Oman, I thought? Clearly, this guy did, and just about anywhere else he felt like it. And he had the memories to show for it. But he came back to Colorado and to this inconsequential tussle of sacred water for his last solo fishing trip. Why? I had to ask.

“You’ve been everywhere, fished everything. Why come here when you could afford to go anywhere?” The implication of his impending doom hung between us.

“What would you do if you were at the end of your line and you knew you could see the whole world, remember your entire life — it’s blessings and troubles — all in this insignificant cutthroat?”

I hung my head a moment, thinking how much finding a new place to live was my idea of trouble. I looked up.

“When times get tough…”

“The tough go fishing,” he said. With a smile, he reached for his rod. “Want to bet I can get another one out of that hole?” n
