Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is a compilation of 300 interviews conducted by Anna Deavere Smith over nine months following the LA riots. Smith interviewed gang members, police, lawyers, activists and shopkeepers from a diversity of backgrounds. Her style of theatre looks at current events from multiple points of view and combines the journalistic interviewing of her subjects with the art of interpreting their words through performance. Her work documents the times in which we live and presents these as a catalyst for social change.
Director Alma Martinez says, "I chose this play because it embraces the values of our university and allows our cast to 'walk in someone else's shoes' by reliving a key moment in the history of U.S. race relations. Institutions of higher learning have the optimum opportunity to boldly lead the national discourse on race, diversity inclusion and equity until the time true social justice comes to pass for all equally."
