Celebrating exam success 2019 Street artist John Culshaw, a self-taught street artist who lost his arm in a childhood accident has spray painted a mural of ex-Liverpool player Steven Gerrard and ex-Everton player Peter Reid on the wall of an Huyton barbers.

John, who grew up in Page Moss completed the project based around two of the Bluebells estates more famous sons.

He said: “Josh at the Bluebell Barbers in Huyton asked me to do Steven Gerrard and Peter Reid - as they both grew up on the estate and he thought it would be fitting to recognise the two Huyton footballers.

“I later received a nice message from Steven on Instagram which I really appreciated although I am not sure if Peter is on social media.”

The mural took four days to complete.

Josh Culley, who owns the barbers said: “John has done some great street art and seeing as we are both Huyton lads I asked him to do a mural for the shop.

“It is a great way of honouring the players and also a way of inspiring the youth in the area, give them something to aim at, they too can be great footballers”.

A 23-year-old man suffered a severe medical episode

WARNING ISSUED OVER DRUGS IN KIRKBY Merseyside Police have issued a public safety warning and appealing for witnesses after a 23-year-old man suffered a severe medical episode in Kirkby in the early hours of Saturday 17 August.

At around 12.30am, emergency services attended at an address in Overton Close to reports of a man having been taken ill. The man is believed to have suffered a drug induced episode. He was taken to hospital and is now in a stable condition.

It is initially believed that the man took what is believed to be LSD, in a jelly sweet form, supplied in a small plastic snap bag, which is to be confirmed, and an investigation is ongoing to ensure that nobody else has suffered serious effects of taking these or other drugs, including checks with local hospitals, and other local forces.

Detective Inspector Yoseph Al-Ramadhan said: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the dangers of taking LSD which can cause vivid and dangerous hallucinations. It can lead to ongoing flashbacks and other visual distortions that can cause extreme distress. It can also be very dangerous in combination with other

drugs. The safest option is not to take it.

“We are urging anyone who took any substances like this, or anyone who suspects someone they know has done, to attend at their nearest hospital for assessment. Likewise, if you are still in possession of any of the described drugs, please do not take them under any circumstances but let us know and we will recover them for further enquiries to be made.

“We have launched a full investigation to establish what these drugs were and who supplied them and will act on all information to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“You may be worried about being in trouble for taking illegal drugs, however our immediate priority is to ensure that nobody else is affected.

Ensure that family and friends are safe and well and report any concerns to medical services immediately.”

INSIGHTS ON GREEN SPACES A unique insight into how Knowsley teenagers view their local green spaces has been revealed by a borough-wide photography competition.

Around 100 13 to 15-year-olds entered a Knowsley Council competition calling on secondary school pupils to take photos highlighting ‘Knowsley’s Inspiring Environment,’ with the winning image taken by 13-year-old Samantha SodenBarton from Halewood Academy.

Samantha was presented with a framed photograph of her winning image by Knowsley Mayor Cllr Jackie Harris at the Knowsley Flower Show. A prize of £600, to be spent on photographic equipment, will also be presented to Halewood Academy at the start of the new school term this month.

Samantha’s photo entitled ‘Nectar’ showed a single bee taking off from a buttercup in a field at Halewood Doorstep Green.

Other finalists’ entries featured images of the lake at Stadt Moers Park, Whiston and trees at Spinney woods in Kirkby, as well as flowers at Court Hey Park, Huyton.

Samantha’s winning photo, along with 11 other images will reach a wider

audience when they are featured in a 2020 calendar celebrating Knowsley’s green environment. Also, all twelve finalists and a selection of runners up will be featured in a mobile exhibition that will tour various locations across Knowsley in 2019–20.

Knowsley Council organised the competition as part of its activities during the Liverpool City Region Year of the Environment 2019. The initiative was aimed at celebrating and encouraging a greater exploration and understanding of the borough’s biodiversity and green spaces.

One of the competition judges Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “The aim of the competition was to encourage Knowsley’s secondary school pupils to actively explore Knowsley’s green spaces and take photographs that will help to inspire others to take a closer, more appreciative, look at their local green environment.

“This competition has given us a unique insight into how our young people view the natural environment. We were very impressed with the standard of

entries we received and how imaginative pupils were when coming up with ideas for their photos – which show how much they appreciate the quality and variety of the green spaces around them.”

Town centre roads get ready for Kirkby retail development Work has started on planned improvements to key junctions on the Bank Lane Corridor, leading to Kirkby Town Centre, works to improve a pedestrian crossing at Melling Drive.

The work is the first part of a £2m scheme for the Bank Lane Corridor, which was recently awarded grant funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and will ensure access to the town centre is ‘future proofed’ and ready for the new retail development.

Work on the pedestrian crossing will began in August and will be complete by 4 September, to coincide with schools reopening after the summer holidays.

In order to reduce disruption, temporary two-way traffic signals will only be in use during off-peak times on weekdays.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said: “Prioritising the work to the pedestrian crossing ahead of the main junction improvement works means that this can be complete before the children go back to school. It also means less disruption once the main works begin.

“These roadworks are another essential piece in the puzzle as we press ahead with our plans for Kirkby Town Centre.

“We’re busy progressing with the legalities of our purchase of St Modwen’s land in the town centre and once that is

complete we’ll be focusing on delivering the retail development that we know local people so desperately want.

“These road improvements ensure that our roads can cope with the increase in traffic that will bring into the area – now and in the future.

“This £2m investment is further evidence of the public sector’s absolute commitment to deliver for Kirkby where the private sector has failed.

“Following the completion of the pedestrian crossing works, the main junction work is likely to begin in September 2019. The council will ensure that every effort is made to minimise disruption, although some short-term delays are to be expected”.

Community Men’s group launches in Huyton A community men’s group has been launched in Huyton.

The Hive men’s group takes place at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park on Longview Drive, Huyton every Wednesday between 6pm and 7.30pm.

It’s aimed at men to come along and have a chat and a cuppa and help to boost their health and wellbeing.

It’s a great opportunity to get out and about, meet new friends and socialise.

Metro Mayor Launches LCR Listens COMBINED AUTHORITY’S BIGGEST EVER PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT EXERCISE Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has launched the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s biggest ever public engagement exercise at an event in Prescot, Knowsley, alongside Councillor Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council.

The event kicks off the first phase of LCR Listens, a three-month exercise that will engage with people across all six boroughs that make up the Liverpool City Region, gauging people’s opinions on a wide range of topics, including transport, jobs and skills, the environment, housing and culture, to inform the future direction of the city region.

Featuring a host of ways to get involved, from public events, to on-street research, through to an on-line portal, the Combined Authority is committed to listening to as many city region residents, from as wide a variety of backgrounds, as possible.

Speaking about LCR Listens, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, said: “LCR Listens is an exercise in bringing devolution to life, to ensure that local people have the opportunity to influence genuine local decision-making. “Devolution is about bringing power closer to the people, and through LCR Listens we are stepping up our efforts to understand what is important to all of our residents.

“What we learn from this exercise will directly influence our strategic direction for the next 20 years and we are pulling out all the stops to make sure that we reach all of our communities.”

LCR Listens is an opportunity for everyone in the city region to have their say on the issues that are important to them.

The feedback the Combined Authority receives will specifically influence its Local Industrial Strategy, which will set out the long-term economic vision for the Liverpool City Region, providing a framework for its investment decisions, and for conversations with government about how we work together, through devolution, to maximise prosperity for all people and

communities.

Councillor Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council said: “I am delighted to support the LCR Listens engagement project which launched in Knowsley.

“Knowsley has benefitted from significant investment thanks to devolution which includes support for the Shakespeare North Playhouse, Halsnead Garden Village and major transport improvements.

“Gathering the views of the Liverpool City Region’s residents which will be used to influence wider strategy decisions is devolution in action. I would encourage everyone to get involved and share their views.”

People from across the city region have already been giving their views by taking part in social media videos that will encourage others to take part in LCR Listens.

The social media campaign was launched in August.

Emily Snooks who studied at Cronton Sixth Form College, she said: “It’s been great to have the opportunity to contribute my views to LCR Listens. As a young person I’d particularly like to see investment in protecting our environment now and for future generations and to address the climate emergency.

“I’m also concerned like a lot of my generation about range of issues that affect us like jobs, skills and being able to afford a home.

“This is a real opportunity for local people to get involved in shaping the future of our city region so I’ve been pleased to share my views in the LCR Listens social media video campaign to encourage others to do the same.

“I’d encourage everyone to let the Metro Mayor and Combined Authority know what they think is important for the future of their family, community and the whole city region.”

Blackpool brings back memories for Mary and Les

CARE home staff have gone the extra mile to treat husband and wife residents to a walk down memory lane.

Abigail Murphy and Margaret Scott, who both work at Aaron Grange Care Home in Huyton, used a day off from work to treat the residents.

They took married couple Mary and Les Story, who have lived at the home since April 2016, to their former family holiday destination of Blackpool.

The pair, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Boxing Day, used to live close to the seaside resort town – taking their three children to enjoy the attractions.

When Abigail and Margaret heard Mary and Les talking about their memories of visiting Blackpool they offered to take them for a day trip.

Mary, 79, said: “I remember going up Blackpool Tower with my children, Karen, Margie and Paul, when they were young and making lovely memories.”

Les, 84, added: “We had a lovely day getting out together and reminiscing about all those fond memories we have.”

Mary’s brother originally introduced her to Les, when he was serving in the army during a posting to Germany.

They became pen pals and, a short time after returning to the UK, Les visited Liverpool to see Mary and ended up staying – leaving his hometown, Darlington.

He got a job working with Mary’s father, as a mobile butcher, while Mary worked in the department of births, marriages and deaths at the Liverpool Echo.

Les then became a firefighter at Durning Road Fire Station where, he said, their motto was “if it’s burning, send for Durning”.

After marrying on Boxing Day 1959, Les and Mary spent a short time living in Cleveleys, less than five miles up the coast from Blackpool.

Abigail, activities co-ordinator at Aaron Grange Care Home, said: “When we heard about Les and Mary’s fond memories of Blackpool, me and Margaret used our Sunday off from work to take them back to relive old times.”

Margaret, healthcare assistant at the home, said: “They both had a lovely time, taking a stroll along the beachfront, enjoying an ice cream and seeing the sights.

“It was the least we could do for such a lovely couple.”

Appeal following attempted ATM theft at Aintree Hospital Detectives are appealing for information following a suspected attempted ATM theft at a hospital in the early hours of Sunday 18 August.

At around 3.15am, security at Aintree Hospital, Lower Lane, reported that a Renault Scenic car, black and blue in colour, had driven into a rear door at the location, before driving off. Damage was caused to the door but nobody was injured and no items stolen.

A black BMW Sport and a blue Ford Fiesta were also involved in the incident. Four males were sighted at the scene, all wearing face coverings. One male, also the driver of the BMW, was holding what could have been a handgun.

The Renault Scenic was used to take the ATM from the building, however, the car received extensive damage and the ATM was abandoned. The Ford Fiesta was also abandoned in the grounds of the hospital. The BMW drove off at speed heading towards the East Lancs Road.

Forensic and CCTV enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton said: “This was a failed attempt to ram the premises and steal the ATM machine, which is a reckless thing to do. Thankfully, this attempt was unsuccessful and caused no injuries.

“We take attempts like this seriously and we are determined to find those responsible and put them before the courts. The potential for serious injury and damage is clear, so help us remove these people from the streets.

“If you saw a black BMW making off at speed in the area in the early hours, or if you have dashcam which may have captured something, let us know.

“A black BMW vehicle may have appeared in your street this morning, which could be vital in our investigation. Let us know and we will take action on all information provided.”

MP CALLS ON MP PENSION FUND TO DROP FOSSIL FUELS Sir George Howarth has joined a cross-party group of over 270 MPs that has called on the Parliamentary Pension Fund to phase out its substantial investment in fossil fuel giants such as Shell and BP following growing concerns about climate change.

Sir George Howarth, MP for Knowsley joins a group of over 270 cross-party MPs and former MPs who have signed the Divest Parliament Pledge, which calls on the Parliamentary Pension Fund to review and phase out investments in fossil fuel companies.

The call follows growing concern among constituents about the environmental, social and financial risks posed by climate change.

Sir George Howarth said: “The public are calling for urgent political action to reduce carbon pollution from burning fossil fuels.

“This is why I support the crossparty Divest Parliament campaign to move investment of the MPs Pension Fund away from fossil fuels and towards solution to the climate crisis.

“I agree with many of my constituents: it doesn’t make sense for long-term pension funds to be investing in companies that aren’t committed to bringing about a clean energy future.”

Over 160 Labour MPs have signed the pledge including leader Jeremy Corbyn, Mary Creagh and Clive Lewis.

The campaign was started in 2014 by a small group of MPs, including the Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

Their first success was to pressure the trustees of the MPs Pension Fund to disclose its investments, revealing that the largest individual holding is in BP PLC. On average, fossil fuel companies dedicate only 1% of their spending to clean energy projects.

Sir George Howarth is the most recent MP representing a constituency in Merseyside to sign the pledge. His voice joins that of Marie Rimmer, MP for St Helens South and Whiston, Dan Carden, MP for Liverpool Walton, and Stephen Twigg, MP for Liverpool West Derby, among others.

Divest Parliament campaigners hope that this latest pledge will encourage neighbouring MPs, including Conor McGinn, MP for St Helens North, and Maria Eagle, MP for Garston and Halewood, to also lend their support to the campaign.

Fly tipper receives a £1046 fine Knowsley Council has successfully prosecuted an offender for fly tipping.

Deborah Maher, from Jarrett Road, Kirkby, was charged with fly tipping under s33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. She pleaded guilty to dumping cardboard boxes and bin bags on open space land on the corner of Changford Road and Jarrett Road, Northwood.

She was fined £400, plus costs of £606.55, and a victim surcharge of £40.

Included in the fly tipping pile were letters with details of the defendant’s name and address which enabled the council to pursue the prosecution.

Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, Cllr Shelley Powell said: “Fly tipping is a blight on our neighbourhoods and will not be tolerated. This

latest successful prosecution sends out a clear message that we will continue to pursue those responsible for fly tipping and take the strongest possible action against them.”

Nominations for new regional Culture and Creativity Awards now open!

Nominations for the first Culture and Creativity Awards in the Liverpool City Region have been opened by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram to stimulate, recognise and celebrate excellence and innovation in art, culture and creativity.

The awards are part of the Metro Mayor’s ‘1% for Culture’ initiative, and will honour the value and contribution that the cultural and creative sector brings to the Liverpool City Region, making it one of the most vibrant and exciting places to live, work, study, visit or do business in.

The 1% for Culture initiative means that Liverpool City Region currently uses the equivalent of 1% of its £30 million annual devolution funding on utilising many of the region’s existing assets and talent to stimulate cultural and creative opportunities.

The red carpet ceremony will take place on 28 November 2019 at the Lady Lever Art Gallery hosted by the 2019 Liverpool City Region ‘Borough of Culture’, Wirral.

Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram said: “Culture and the creative arts are an incredibly important part of our identity. Whether it’s our museums, art galleries, theatres or our music, they all provide huge benefits, from bringing people together to enjoy once-ina-lifetime events, getting involved in creative activities, and encouraging people to visit the city region for the first (and not the last) time. Made on Merseyside Made on Merseyside celebrates and showcases industry in Knowsley, the goods produced here and the people who made them.

This exhibition will share the stories of businesses large and small, past and present.

At the heart of the exhibition are objects, photos and footage of staff, factories and products, loaned from a variety of individuals and organisations, as well drawing upon Prescot Museum’s collection. A specially commissioned montage of film and audio clips from various local history projects, promotional footage and personal interviews will bring the displays to life. Some of these interviews have been conducted in the months leading up to the exhibition, capturing more recent experiences and memories not previously documented, preserving them for the future.

Reminisce Festival is a noncamping, one-day event celebrating the best in classic dance music which takes place in Sherdley Park, St Helens on Saturday 7 September.

Back for 2019 and the arenas will be even bigger than ever to accommodate up to 20,000 festivalgoers, with only the very best original old school artists on every stage to give you the ultimate trip down memory lane.

Live at this year’s Reminisce Festival is local lad Lee Butler who will be playing the Clubland Arena and who promises to ‘gonna blow ye heads off’. The Challenge caught up with Lee who gave us his lowdown to the festival.

Are you looking forward to in this years Reminisce Festival?

Yes I’m so excited for this year’s festival, it’s always a lot of hard work in the build up but it’s always worth it on the day to see and hear so many having a ball.

What do you enjoy about the Reminisce event?

I think it has to be the unique atmosphere that’s created at Reminisce, it really is a very special vibe of people that come together for their love of club classics and that creates such a special atmosphere.

It’s so good to see tens of 1000s just loving the whole experience.

What have you got lined up for this year?

As always we set our standards very high and each year we go bigger and better with plenty of improvements and new ideas. This year we have an even bigger site, more production, better effects and of course another huge line up.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at Reminisce?

Really buzzing to see Venga Boys again, there such a guilty pleasure and always absolutely rock the whole arena. Ultra Nate will be special when they perform ‘Free’ and to have D-Ream here for the first time is amazing. To be honest there’s too many to mention.

Tell us about the Clubland Arena and what to expect.

Well this year’s Clubland Arena is now our biggest to date, it’s all about the big vocal and bounce anthems and every year it just gets more popular. If you love your bbbbounce then this is your arena and expect to burn some serious calories dancing too!

What is the Reminisce audience like?

The best!! We get so many lovely messages about how Reminisce is special, this is because the crowd really are there for the music and that shines through with the incredible screams and roars from each arena. It’s a very very special day.

Officers continue to appeal following shooting in Croxteth Merseyside Police are continuing to investigate a firearms discharge in Croxteth on 22nd August.

Officers were called to Regal Road just before 6pm following reports two men had received gunshot wounds. One man received an injury to his stomach, whilst the other received an injury to his hip. Both men were taken to hospital, where they are now described as being in a stable condition.

Detective Inspector Tracey Martin said: “Although we believe this to be a targeted attack, it doesn’t make it any less serious. This shooting happened in broad daylight, in the peak of the summer holidays when innocent members of the public were out going about their daily business.

“This is a truly reckless act and could have resulted in fatal consequences.

Unfortunately, the victims are not cooperating with police, which therefore makes this appeal for information even more prominent.

“We believe a dark coloured BMW was at the scene prior to the incident and so we are keen to speak to the driver/passengers of this vehicle as we believe they could have crucial information to help us.

“Equally, anyone that remembers seeing the vehicle or the incident itself, has dashcam footage or believes they have information to help with our continued investigation and hasn’t spoken to us already, is urged to please come forward so we can investigate accordingly.”

Officers remain at the scene, providing a reassurance presence in the community and a cordon remains in place while CCTV, forensic and house to house enquiries are being carried out.

Elderly enjoy fun day thanks to teens YOUNG volunteers have been entertaining elderly residents living at a Merseyside care home – and raising hundreds of pounds to send them on day trips.

Sixteen teenagers taking part in the Everton in the Community National Citizen Service (NCS) spent time at Aaron Grange Care Home, on Blacklow Brow, in Huyton.

As part of their community action project with the official charity of Everton Football Club, the group of 15to-17-year-olds organised a traditional family fun day at the home, with cake sales, tombolas and raffles.

The day raised £262 for the residents’ fund, which helps towards activities and days out for those living at the care home.

Alongside the fundraising, one student handmade personalised bags for each resident, emblazoned with their name and a place to add facts about themselves.

To show their appreciation, residents performed a few of their favourite songs for the visitors, including “Show Me The Way to Go Home”, “You Are My Sunshine” and “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”.

The students reciprocated with their own singing and dancing performance, which received a round of applause from everyone at the home.

Each of them was presented with a box of chocolates and a certificate saying “Thank you for making the difference” for organising the event.

8,000 children benefit from cycle training During the last year more than 8,000 pupils aged between 10 and 12 learnt to be ‘road savvy’ on their bikes, thanks to an initiative co-ordinated by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

The free scheme for schools has been praised by teachers who say it is keeping children safe as well as helping them to be fit.

Pupils in more than 250 schools across Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral have been taught a range of skills to help them stay safe while cycling on the road.

The training is primarily aimed at children in years five, six and seven so they are fully prepared for high school

and equipped to stay safe on the roads.

Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, said: “We are fully committed to encouraging people to use healthier and greener transport, which is why we’re investing in major projects including a 600km walking and cycling network.

“However it is just as important that people, and especially children, have the skills they need to stay safe while they are out and about, which is why we support this training.

“Teaching these essential bike and road safety skills is so important, so that children are prepared for the transition into high school in the autumn, especially when the nights get darker earlier.

“One accident is one too many and this is why the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is committed to funding this important scheme.”

Paul Deakin, in charge of safeguarding at Alsop High School, in Liverpool, said: “We recently took part in Bike Right Level Three training with 60 year seven students. They really enjoyed the course and learnt so much about road safety and awareness. The roads are so busy around the school, so this safety awareness training is particularly important.

“I have noticed over the last year, more and more students are riding into school.

We have over a hundred students who choose to ride their bikes into school. We fully support and encourage students

cycling and have witnessed the obvious health and wellbeing benefits.”

Cllr Liam Robinson, portfolio holder for transport and air quality, said: “This is great work by the team. The programme not only teaches young people the importance of road safety but will also help encourage a new generation to travel by bike, which has huge benefits for the city region - helping reduce emissions and improve air quality as well as improving people’s health and wellbeing.”

The project is co-ordinated by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and delivered by Bikeright. It is funded through the Department for Transport and the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership.

SPECSAVERS KICKS OFF A SUMMER OF STYLE

Specsavers recently kicked off August with an exciting Summer in Bloom event, showcasing the variety of designer ranges now available across all Merseyside branches.

Taking place at The Florist in Liverpool, the night celebrated the success of the Specsavers Design Collective range, a unique collection of 14 glasses and sunglasses, designed by four students.

Guests were treated to cocktails and canapes, enjoyed beauty treatments at the Summer in Bloom pamper bar, and then took part in a flower crown making workshop.

Blackshaw, Tiffany Bachelet and Joshua Teodoro – entered Specsavers’ inaugural design competition last year, with their creations chosen from more than 140 entries.

The range was created to support fresh British design talent, celebrating individuality and encouraging everyone to wear their specs with pride - and is now available now across stores, at two pairs for £99.

Guests at the Summer in Bloom event were also able to try out the latest designs from Marc Jacobs, Cath Kidston, and Balmain, as well as have their ultimate frame style uncovered by the Specsavers framestyler.

GCSE results day in Knowsley Students in Knowsley are celebrating after collecting GCSE results this week.

At Lord Derby Academy, pupils secured a 9% point increase on last year’s results, whilst at Kirkby High there was a 3% point rise.

At Lord Derby Academy, the school was celebrating the highest proportion of pupils achieving top grades in the school’s history. One student, Charlie, achieved an incredible seven Grade 9s and two Grade 8s, making him one of the highest performers in the country. He now plans to study maths, physics, chemistry and French.

Vicky Gowan, head teacher at Lord Derby Academy, said: “I am delighted that the GCSE results at Lord Derby Academy reflect the hard work, dedication and ambition of our pupils and the entire school community.”

St Edmund Arrowsmith in Whiston was also celebrating an increase in performance with the number of pupils gaining a Grade 4 and above in both English and maths rising 1.5% points.

At Halewood Academy high achievers included Katy Allen, who recently won the Outstanding Achievement award at the Knowsley Education Awards. Katy achieved an outstanding result with three Grade 9s (in biology, chemistry and physics), and six Grade 8s.

Matthew Jennings, Bethany Biggins, Megan Doughty, Reece Brown and Karlie-Anne Bisset also secured a high number of top grades.

At St Edmund Arrowsmith, head girl Jane Sanji achieved five Grade 9’s, whilst head boy Matthew Johnson achieved three Grade 9s. Mollie Burke also achieved three Grade 9’s – making them all among the best in the country.

“It is really encouraging to see that there are some fantastic success stories to celebrate across Knowsley today, with schools like Lord Derby academy seeing a significant rise in performance across the board.

Congratulations class of 2019 Winstanley College students received their A-level results with scores of them achieving the best grades possible.

Winstanley has such talented students it almost goes without saying that they once again achieved above the grades achieved by students in other colleges nationally.’

But for the record, Winstanley students achieved a pass rate of 99% with 31% of those being A/A* grades, way above the national average of 25%.

99 students got three or more As or A*s and the majority of students secured their first choice place, many of them at Russell Group universities, including 10

students who will be going on to Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

An outstanding number of students are also going on to medicine, dentistry and veterinary degrees.

Winstanley’s MDV programme continues its long-standing tradition of success in preparing students for entry to these highly competitive professions.

Music, theatre and art students who have been studying practical vocational courses have done equally impressively bringing in 93% A*/A equivalent between them.

To achieve these grades, students need to have both academic excellence and creative talent and these are the qualifications needed to

secure places at prestigious specialist colleges such as the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and Central St Martins in

London.

GCSE success at Rainford High There was lots a happy faces at Rainford High as students collected their GCSE results.

The school has seen increases in a number of areas, with 50% of students achieving 9-5 grades in English and Maths.

27 students achieved incredible grade 9’s in Maths a number of students making excellent progress across all subjects.

One particular student, Alana Hesketh achieved nine 9's and an A* in Further Maths. She will go on to study A-Levels in Sciences and Maths, in preparation to possibly study medicine at University.

Alana has been a fantastic all-round student who has successfully represented the school at sport.

who has achieved more than 7 grade 9’s.

Principal Ian Young said: “It has been another good year for GSCE results at Rainford High. Our students have worked very hard in preparation for their exams, and thanks to the right support from our outstanding teaching staff, it is great to see their efforts have paid off.

News from around the region CARMEL COLLEGE CELEBRATE A-LEVEL RESULTS 2019

Congratulations were sent to the class of 2019 at Carmel College who received their A-level exam results. The atmosphere in college was fantastic as students celebrated their success with friends, parents and teachers.

This year students achieved a very impressive Level 3 pass rate of 98.42% with 55.75% top grades (A*-B / Dist*-Dist) and 79.29% high grades (A*-C / Dist*-Merit).

The college were extremely proud of all their students who have worked so hard during their two years here and wished them well for the future.

Carmel College principal, Mike Hill, was delighted. He said: “We are really pleased with this year’s excellent results which follows our Outstanding Ofsted Grade awarded in the summer. It’s so good to see so many of our students gaining the grades they were targeted which will allow them to go on to their chosen destination.

Students at Rainford Sixth Form are celebrating this morning after collecting their A-level results.

The sixth form opened its doors at 8am to expectant students and their families, where they were each given an envelope containing their results.

It has been another strong year for Rainford High’s dedicated post 16 provision: • 42% of students achieved A*-B grades at A-level with 13% achieving the top tier of grades in all level 3 qualifications.

• 69% of students achieved A*-C grades at A-level with 42% achieving A*-C grades or the equivalent in all level 3 qualifications.

• 100% of students achieved A*-E grades in all level 3 qualifications • 38% of students have received offers from Russell Group Universities, with some students taking up opportunities of higher level apprenticeships.

Some of the stand out performers were: • Lewis Derbyshire secured an A* in chemistry, A* in maths, A* in further maths, A* in physics and A for an extended project qualification (EPQ). Lewis will go to Durham University to study physics.

• Luke Botcherby achieved an A* in French, A* in Spanish, A in maths and A for an EPQ. He’s now going to study modern languages at Warwick University.

• Emily Chapman received an A in English, distinction* in sport and a distinction* in business and a C for an EPQ. She will study sport and exercise science at Edge Hill University.

• Conor Gibson achieved a distinction* in art and design, A* in photography, an A in maths and an A for an EPQ. Conor is set to study mathematics at the University of Leeds.

• Jessica Harley received an A* in French, A* in Spanish, A in religious studies and an A for an EPQ. Jessica is off to study French and Spanish at the University of Oxford.

• Callum Irving got a distinction* in business, A in geography, A in maths and an A for an EPQ. He will now read accounting and finance at the University of Leeds.

• Celvin Lee achieved an A* in maths, A* in further maths, A in chemistry and an A for an EPQ. He will study mathematics at Durham University.

• Aisling Power secured As in chemistry, physics, maths and further maths. She will head to Queens University Belfast to continue her studies in physics.

LORD DERBY ACADEMY CELEBRATE EXCELLENT RESULTS Lord Derby Academy is celebrating excellent 2019 GCSE results with many remarkable individual pupil achievements.

All key headline progress and attainment measures increased this year and the results included the highest proportion of pupils achieving top grades in Lord Derby Academy history.

Amongst the whole school results were some phenomenal individual success stories.

The highest attaining pupil, Charlie, secured an impressive 7 grade 9 (the highest grade available) and 2 grade 8 GCSEs. The youngest pupil in the year group, Megan, gained an impressive set of results despite earlier struggles linked to dyslexia. Megan’s mum, Sarah, SAID: “Megan came here in Year 7 and from the point she arrived I will gush about this school, it has been terrific.

“She left primary school having failed her SATS. We came her and as parents you have to be quite persistent. We asked the school for as much support as Megan could have and they have more than fulfilled our brief”.

Headteacher, Victoria Gowan said: “We are delighted that the 2019 GCSE results reflect the hard work, dedication and ambition of our pupils and wider school community”.

Students secure places at top universities across UK St Helens College and Knowsley Community College are celebrating the fantastic achievements of its A Level Academy and BTEC students.

As students collected their results anxious anticipation turned into smiles and celebrations after discovering they had secured places at some of the best universities across the UK, including University of Chester, Edge Hill University, Falmouth University and Russell Group universities, University of Leeds and University of Sheffield.

Monica Box, principal, said: “We are extremely proud of our students and value the opportunity to celebrate with them today along with their friends and family. Our students have progressed through a transformational journey both personally and academically, all culminating in their well-deserved achievements today and we wish them the very best for their exciting futures.”

Aspiring UN delegate and one of the colleges top performers, Bethany, is celebrating her incredible success after achieving A*, A, B in sociology, politics, and religious studies.

Bethany is progressing to the University of Sheffield to read politics and international relations.

Bethany said: “I was so shocked to do so well - I really wasn’t expecting the grades I have achieved. The key to my success was choosing the subjects that I was interested in but also having my chosen career in politics at the forefront of my mind.

“Studying at the A Level Academy was the best decision I have ever made. It’s where I discovered my true passion for politics.”

Student Andy is “completely shocked” after discovering that he has landed a place at Edgehill University to read history with politics. Andy said: “I couldn’t have got through my studies without my tutors. They have been amazing and really took the time to support me with extra revision sessions. I can’t wait to start university in September!”

This set of results comes in addition to many students achieving triple Distinction star grades (D*D*D*) in their vocational courses and securing their places at first choice universities. D*D*D* amount to the same UCAS tariff points as those achieving A* grades at A-level.

Aspiring tourism manager, Sophie, achieved D*D*D* on her level 3 Extended Diploma in travel and tourism and said: “I’ve had

some amazing experiences on my course, such as working alongside the Eurocamp team in Holland as a holiday rep and globe-trotting our way to Iceland to explore their bustling tourism industry. I am looking forward to studying international tourism management at Northampton University!”

Proud student, Lauren, completed her level 3 Extended Diploma in creative media and hopes to one day become an director.

Lauren said: “I am so excited to study film, photography and media at University of Leeds in September after achieving D*D*D* on my course! The tutors are so supportive and made the course interesting and enjoyable.”

Stuart dreams of becoming a wildlife conservationist now that he has completed his level 3 Extended Diploma in animal management. Stuart said: “This course is fantastic for animal enthusiasts like me! From trips to Chester Zoo to study ethograms to visiting Knowsley Safari and Merseyside Dogs Home to study animal behaviour, I have had some of the most amazing experiences.

Now that I have achieved D*D*D*, I am looking forward to studying wildlife conservation at the University of Kent.”

ST HELENS AND KNOWSLEY NAMED IN SHORTLIST FOR ‘TRUST OF THE YEAR’ IN PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL HEALTHCARE AWARDS The organisation that runs Whiston and St Helens hospitals has been shortlisted for Trust of the Year at this year’s Health Services Journal (HSJ) Awards, recognising its outstanding contribution to healthcare.

The Trust also provides services at Newton Hospital, as well as primary, community and intermediate care services in St Helens.

Rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC and top of the national league tables in both the NHS Staff Survey and Patient Led Assessments, St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has been selected based on its ambition, its open and inclusive culture, and the positive impact it has on patient and staff experiences within the health care sector.

The judging panel, made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, has shortlisted the Trust despite the tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants.

Employing over 5,000 staff, the Trust provides care to patients from across the North West and beyond, with Whiston Hospital home to the Mersey Regional Burns Unit and the busiest A&E Department in Cheshire and Merseyside.

Terrified parents are warning children about knife crime at the age of just SEVEN, a shock study shows Terrified parents are warning children about knife crime at the age of just SEVEN, a shock study shows.

While parents feel between the age of 10 and 11 is the right age to talk to children about stabbings, more than one in 10 have the difficult discussion while their child is still in infant school.

Official figures from the Home Office show a huge rise in the number of knife crime offences, with a total of 43,516 recorded in the 12 months leading up to March 2019.

This is a huge increase on the 23,945 offences in the year ending in March 2014.

As a result, a study of 2,000 parents of children under 18 by ChannelMum.com, found 72 per cent worry that their child could become a victim of knife crime.

Almost eight per cent said their child has been attacked or threatened with a knife while nearly one in 13 know of a youngster who has been a victim.

And seven per cent have caught their

child with a sharp weapon.

A third of parents are so concerned about their child’s safety, they would even consider moving to a new area.

Others would walk their child to and from school (33 per cent), search their bags or coats for knives (23 per cent) or move them to a new school (17 per cent) in order to protect them.

It also emerged more than one in four parents believe knife crime is getting worse in their area with 57 per cent believing the government, police and local authorities are struggling to get it under control.

Seven in 10 parents are calling for more schools to do more with children to broach the discussion around knife crime, with just 16 per cent saying their school holds anti-knife lessons.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of ChannelMum.com, said: “It paints a bleak picture of childhood when parents feel they have to speak to their child about knife crime from just seven years old.

“It's not a conversation any mum or dad wants to have, but it may well be necessary to keep teens safe.

"The knife crime epidemic is spreading across all areas of the country so it’s absolutely essential that children are helped to stay safe while adults must better understand the growing pressures our young people are under."

The study also found that of those who worry about their child being a victim of knife crime, 27 per cent of parents fear they may think it’s ‘cool’ or impressive to carry a knife around.

Another quarter expressed concerns their youngster could be drawn into a gang for protection from other groups.

Almost one in four even worry their son or daughter will end up carrying a knife for their own protection, while 15 per cent fear them being jailed.

To try and keep their child safe, more than one in five parents have already asked their children to change their behaviour with 51 per cent of those getting

Anti-knife crime campaigner Brooke Kinsella, whose brother Ben was stabbed to death in 2008 aged just 16, said: “You can’t wrap up children in cotton wool and lock them up so they can’t go out.

“But our children should not be worried about knife crime. They should be thinking about exam results, where they want to go to college and what they want to do when they grow up.

“They should not be worried that they are not going to grow up.”

Siobhan Freegard added: "Knives can change lives in seconds so it's vital we all know how to help victims quickly, which is why we created this expert video.

“It's vital for parents to talk to their children about knife crime and the effects it can have not only on them, but also on their friends and families.”

National Dementia Carers Day is on Sunday, 8 September – a day to recognise the fantastic work the huge number of informal and family carers do to support their relatives with dementia every day.

Monday, 9 September is the annual 999 Emergency Services Day and we will be raising the flag at Huyton and Kirkby in support. The day aims to promote volunteering in the emergency services, educate the public about using the services responsibly, teach life-saving skills and promote the work that these services do on a daily basis.

From 9-13 September, we are encouraging you to ‘know your numbers’ by getting your blood pressure checked and ensuring you know the steps you can take if your blood pressure is high. Three nurses from Aintree University Hospital have been recognised for their service to the NHS, having qualified together 25 years ago.

Dawn Jamieson, Colette Wright and Elizabeth Kenny all trained together at Aintree and qualified together in 1994.

Remarkably, they have remained side by side ever since, caring for Merseyside and Cheshire’s sick and injured.

Dawn, 56, from Bootle, Colette, 48, from Kirkby and Elizabeth, 46, from Orrell Park were among 21 staff celebrated at Aintree’s Long Service Awards, which recognises the dedication of staff who have spent 25 and 40 years in the NHS. The trio were one of the first groups of

nurses in the country to receive training at a university. Rather than simply learning their trade on the hospital ward as was the norm in the NHS for 42 years, Dawn, Colette and Elizabeth learnt about the theory behind treatments, helping them achieve and deliver the best possible care to their patients.

Dawn, who is now a Clinical Nurse Manager, said: “The NHS is amazing, it’s unlike any other organisation in the world and the people who keep it running are a special breed. Their selflessness and passion has saved so many lives and kept hundreds of families and relationships intact. It is a privilege to work alongside these incredible people at Aintree and I hope to do so for many years to come.”

Colette Wright, Acting Ward Manager, said: “It doesn’t seem that long ago I was running round the wards, trying to get my bearings and impress senior staff. Times have changed, but my love for this place has not. Aintree is like one big family and I couldn’t imagine spending 25 years anywhere else.”

Aintree’s Chief Executive, Steve Warburton, who himself received a long service trophy, said: “It was a privilege to receive my award alongside so many dedicated and passionate people.

Collectively the room had 585 years’ experience of caring for our communities sick and injured. Dawn, Colette and Elizabeth story is a fascinating one. To work for one organisation and one department for such a long period of time is certainly award worthy. I’d imagine from day one of stepping foot into Aintree, they made a huge impact and continue to do so, improving the care we provide to our patients.”

Liverpool leads the way in training future surgeons

The skys the limit Another week, another death defying challenge for Caring Connections staffs. On Saturday 3 August Caring Connections staff took on the UKs Highest skydive all in aid of Barbara Bettle foundation.

The team bravely completed the 15,000ft tandem jump at Black Nights Parachute Centre in Lancashire.

Paul Growney from Caring Connections said: “First it was the abseil, then bungee jump, now sky dive all in the aid of raising awareness / funds for suicide bereavement support across

the Merseyside region, as a team we are really trying to push our comfort zones all in the aid of Barbara’s foundation”.

The Barbra Bettle Foundation is a project of Caring Connections which has been set up to provide support services to individuals bereaved through suicide, services including fully funded counselling / cognitive therapy and group sessions. The service is provided across bases in Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral and Liverpool City Centre.

Aintree University Hospital is providing junior surgeons with innovative training that will enhance the care they are able to provide for cancer and major trauma patients.

A group of 45 surgeons from hospitals in Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Lancashire attended a one-day course where they heard from some of Aintree’s most experienced consultants about some of their most challenging patients.

Between them, the speakers had more than 80 years’ experience in their specialist fields and had gathered case studies for junior surgeons to discuss a diagnosis, management plan and surgical approach.

Mr Nikhil Misra, consultant general and trauma surgeon at Aintree, said: “I’m not aware of anywhere else in the country that is able to provide this quantity of real life case studies and first-hand experience in one place.

“Between us, my colleagues and I have many years of experience, and it was great to be able to share that knowledge with consultant surgeons of the future from across the region.

“Our hope is that by offering this access to senior expertise it will really enhance their knowledge and skills, ultimately improving the care they are able to provide to patients.”

The training day is in its second year and there are plans to roll the course out nationally.

Mr Misra said: “We’ve had a lot of interest from other hospitals around the country who would like to send their junior surgeons to Aintree for this training. I only wish it were available when I was a junior!”

The event took place in Aintree’s state-of-the-art iMac lab, which allowed attendees to examine x-rays in detail on screen.

Dr John Curtis, consultant radiologist at Aintree, said: “Our juniors are viewing teaching x-rays and CT scans I have collected from patients over the last two decades in a single day. Aintree is equipping the future NHS generation with the tools they need to succeed and to be able to do this on a national scale would be a real achievement”.

Knowsley Flower Show and Feelgood Festival 2019 The Knowsley Flower Show and Feelgood Festival proved very popular once again this year, with thousands of visitors taking to Court Hey Park to enjoy all of the brilliant outdoor activities and entertainment.

The theme of this year’s Knowsley Flower Show was the 50th anniversary of the incredible moon landing with some brilliant space-themed categories to enter in and get imaginative.

Visitors also celebrated the Year of the Environment by pledging to do their bit for the environment, making a smoothie by cycling, and hopping on the free buses to and from the show.

Furry friends enjoyed the Merseyside Fun Dog Show and had the opportunity to show off their skills and cuteness to win a rosette.

Of course, there were plenty of stalls selling a range of things to tempt you with including homemade goods, plants, ornaments, hot food, and all sorts of delicious confectionery.

The star of the show, the flower marquee, was as impressive as ever. It was blooming with awardwinning flowers, plants, vegetables, and designs.

The day before the flower show was the Feelgood Festival. Growing in popularity, it’s the opportunity for people all ages to enjoy themselves and try new things.

All energy levels were catered for! Visitors could enjoy hand massages, arts and crafts, yoga, poetry, dancing, and martial arts. Children had plenty to do including inflatables and fairground rides.

Local performers including Songbird Choir and Swanside Line Dancing Queens entertained the visitors brilliantly.

There was plenty of other entertainers helping to make the day great including the ‘bubble man’, Curtis Watts who led energetic poetry sessions, and Brooksie, who drawn funny caricature art for visitors to take home as a unique memory.

Cllr Shelley Powell, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “There’s been so much great feedback about Knowsley Flower Show and Feelgood Festival. It’s clear Knowsley residents and local people continue to look forward to, and really enjoy, the flower show weekend year after year”.

Outdoors with The Hairy Gardener Hello again It’s a good time to be out in the garden at anytime, but at this time of year it’s a bit of a bonus for all us gardeners who grow fruit and vegetables, it’s harvest time.

That moment when you pick tomatoes straight off the vine for your salad or fry up.

Blueberries picked the day beforehand and used on your morning cereal, strawberries from your hanging baskets to go with your ice cream gets your mouth watering doesn’t it.

And don’t get me started on apples, pears, plums, possibly peaches, it has been known. Gooseberries grown on the bush and left on until they are squashable between finger and thumb.

Poor mans grapes they used to be known as, give me them any day in place of supermarket grapes, gooseberries if grown correctly have a sweetness that has to be tasted to be believed.

As I’m writing this article I’m remembering other fruit you can grow quite easily such as figs, blackberries even olives and not to mention all the herbs you can grow, a topic for another day.

So where is all this produce grown, on a small holding or an allotment? Definitely if you’ve got one.

All the plants I’ve mentioned can be grown in a smallish garden, I kid you not. As you might of gathered by now I do it myself.

Now you might become a little veg and fruit crazy if you try to grow lots like myself but hey, we are only caretakers on this planet for a short while so go for it. Grow some of your

own food.

One of my favourite flowering plants that I grow in hanging baskets and pots are fuchsias, either bush or trailing varieties. What I find with fuchsia is they like growing in hanging baskets and pots but preferably on their own.

For some reason mine thrive better singularly, they don’t like to make friends with all the showy annuals that people put in their baskets, anti social plant, no, they just prefer their own company and in my case, position in the garden. Yes, some prefer full sun, and some prefer shade.

Definitely a plant for most aspects of the garden, in fact if you put up a bracket on an outside wall, hang a fuchsia on it.

And their versatility continues as this year I’m beginning to grow them in a Bonsai form, more news of that in another article.

Try something new Halewood Community Choir were formed using lottery community funding in June 2011 and has increased in strength and numbers since then as recognised by Knowsley Cultural Awards when they won Group of the Year 2014.

They enjoy singing and performing together under the musical direction of singer/songwriter, vocal coach and assisting LIPA lecturer Hayli Kincade.

During their last season they learnt a number of new songs and performed concerts including an Evening of Christmas Music at Halewood Academy with local school choirs, the annual afternoon tea at St Nicholas Church Halewood, a collaborative session with Plantation School Choir and a Friends and Family Choir event featuring two other choirs led by Hayli held at St Anne’s Church in Wavertree which raised £1062 for Asylum Link Merseyside.

They meet every Wednesday evening 7-9pm at Halewood Academy, Wood Road L26 1UU and always welcome new members who just want to find their voice and enjoy singing whatever their own personal level. No one has to audition or read music. Taster sessions are free then £5 afterwards.

Four and two-legged friends at Dogs Trust Merseyside are celebrating a ‘yappy’ 20th birthday – and hoping that one longer term resident will find his forever home before they mark their 21st.

Puppies to older age pooches (OAPs) and breeds of all shapes and sizes have been cared for at the Huyton-based rehoming centre with crossbreeds, Jack Russells and Border Collies being the most popular breeds and Max and Mollie topping the table when it comes to dog names.

Since opening in August 1999, 12,450 dogs have headed off to forever homes and assistant manager Cath Stulberg, who was part of the original team, says 20 years on, seeing them go home with their new families is as special as ever.

When he finally got home he thanked Magda for saving him from a bloody fate.

She said she had only used a markerpen and had not tattooed him at all.

KNOWSLEY ARK Bringing history alive

Harold Wilson This month, we are delving into the Archives to find out more about a politician and statesman who made an impact not only on the lives of Knowsley residents, but on people across the United Kingdom and the world stage.

James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx (1916–1995), Prime Minister and long-serving Member of Parliament for the Ormskirk and then Huyton constituencies, was born at 4 Warneford Road, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, on 11 March 1916.

He was the son of James Herbert Wilson (1882–1971), a works chemist, and his wife, Ethel, née Seddon (1882–1957), who before her marriage worked as a schoolteacher.

His school days were spent at New Street Elementary School, Milnsbridge and Royds Hall School, Huddersfield, until his father’s employment took the family to the Wirral where Harold attended Wirral County Grammar School, Bebington.

In 1934, Wilson won a place at Jesus College, Oxford to study history, before switching his studies to philosophy, politics and economics.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Gladys Mary Baldwin on 1 January 1940.

In 1945, he was elected to Parliament as MP for Ormskirk and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Works and two years later was made Secretary for Overseas Trade. He became the youngest 20th century cabinet minister at the age of 31, when he took the role of President of the Board of Trade on 29 September 1947.

In the General Election of 1950, his Ormskirk constituency was significantly altered and he was narrowly elected for the new seat of Huyton, where he served for 33 years until 1983. He was elected Leader of the opposition Labour Party on 14 February 1963.

His first term as Prime Minister (19641970) followed the 1964 General Election.

He called a further election in 1966 where Labour was successful in defeating Edward Heath’s Conservative Party to secure a further term in office.

Harold Wilson was very active in his constituency, attending to the needs and demands of the residents and also appearing at many civic events, at a time when the townships were undertaking large scale building developments and expansion. There are several examples of his involvement to be seen in the Archive.

In 1963, Huyton-with-Roby Urban District Council invited Harold Wilson to

open phase one of their new council office block development.

The ceremony was held at 3:00pm on Saturday 21 September 1963 and the Member of Parliament was presented with a shield-shaped wooden plaque featuring the Huyton-with-Roby Urban District Council coat of arms. The Council minute book covering the period tells us that at an ordinary meeting of the Council held on 5 November 1963, Chairman of the Council, Councillor G.W. Sealey, JP presented each member with a replica of the plaque to commemorate the opening of the new offices.

The Huyton constituency also covered the Kirkby area, and on 19 April 1969, Harold Wilson and Mary officially opened the new Kirkby Civic Buildings. This event is recorded in the Kirkby Urban District Council minute books: at a meeting of the Council, held at the Civic Buildings on Monday 10 February 1969 at 7:15pm, minute 620 tells us that a Notice of Motion regarding the official opening of the Civic Buildings was considered by the Councillors present.

It was resolved that arrangements be made for the official opening, to be held on Saturday, 19 April 1969 at 2:30pm. It was also resolved that the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable J Harold Wilson, OBE, MP, be invited to perform the opening ceremony.

A wonderful album of black and white photographs by Simpsons Photographic Service documents the proceedings of the opening ceremony. The Right Honourable gentleman is seen being presented with what appears to be a small case. Further exploration of the Archive reveals that this case, covered in red leather with gold tooling and a velvet and silk lining, contains a ceremonial brass key, which features the Kirkby Urban District Council coat of arms. The inscription affixed to the inner lid of the box confirms that this key was presented to The Prime Minister, The Rt Hon J Harold Wilson OB, MP by Architects Jackson & Edmonds on the official opening of the Civic Buildings, Kirkby.

Back in Westminster, following a period of Conservative government under

Edward Heath’s premiership, Wilson’s second term as PM ran from 1974-1976, as he returned to Downing Street on 4 March 1974 leading a minority Labour Government. He gained a three-seat majority in the second election that year, on 10 October 1974.

On 16 March 1976, Wilson announced his resignation as Prime Minister, with effect from 5 April 1976, although he continued to represent his constituency until his retirement from Parliament at the 1983 General Election.

On 23 April 1976 he was made a Knight of the Garter and following his retirement, Sir Harold was made Baron Wilson of Rievaulx, after Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire.

James Harold Wilson was also awarded the greatest civic honour possible by Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, as he was granted of freedom of the Borough of Knowsley.

This right was conferred on The Right Honourable Sir Harold Wilson, KG, OBE, FRS, MP on Wednesday 18 May 1977 ‘in recognition of the eminent service rendered by Sir Harold Wilson to the Borough, both as the Right Honourable Member of Parliament for the Huyton Constituency since 1950 and as the former Prime Minister of Her Majesty’s

Government’.

A Special Meeting of the Council was held at the Huyton Suite for the purpose of admitting Sir Harold Wilson to be an Honorary Freeman of the Borough, attended by The Mayor, Councillor F Lawler, JP and Councillors. He was presented with an exquisitely illuminated, sealed certificate of the grant of freedom of the Borough, mounted in a leather bound folder. The Common Seal of the Council of the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley is attached to the certificate, which is signed by D Willgoose, Chief Executive and Town Clerk. The certificate was designed by EA Bright of Shaw & Sons Ltd, of 108 Temple Chambers, Temple Court, London. At the same ceremony, Sir Harold Wilson presented the Council with the Grant of Arms, designed by Mr H Ellis Tomlinson, MA, FHS. Thanks to the generosity of our current Member of Parliament, the Rt Hon Sir George Howarth, MP, we can preserve the certificate and the HUDC plaque in the Archive for future generations to appreciate.

Harold Wilson died following a long illness on 23 May 1995 at St Thomas’s Hospital, Lambeth, London and was buried at Old Town Church on St Mary’s, the Isles of Scilly, on 6 June 1995.

Premier League values 2019 Premier League value – do the teams provided it for the fans? Just what is the worth of England’s biggest clubs and who is the most valuable club in the world?

OddsMonkey has looked at a number of Premier League values, looking at everything from season tickets prices to squad values and the results are certainly interesting.

First overall they look at the season ticket prices for the new season and going off the average salary for the town or city where they are based.

And the best value for money comes from newly promoted, who boast the cheapest average season ticket price in the league at £458 and coupled with Sheffield’s average salary of £21,626 that means that is just 2.12% of the yearly wage making them best value in the Premier League this season.

But let’s not think this is all about the newly promoted sides, far from as the next three are Premier League stalwarts.

In second, off the back of fourth straight season in the top-flight and their best finish 2001, is Watford, who look to provide great value for their locals.

Their average season ticket price is £609, with the average local wage of £28,355.

Perhaps one of the most surprising is the fact that Chelsea are ranked in third for value, despite the fact they have the third highest season ticket prices – but that is because the King’s Road is the most affluent of all Premier League districts with an average wage in excess of £40,000-a-year.

Arsenal have always been renowned for having the most expensive tickets, but that crown has been wrestled off them this year with their North London rivals Tottenham – in their new White Hart Lane home – taking the honours as their average

However, in terms of value Spurs are some way the most expensive in the Premier League with their average price costing their fans over 5% of their yearly wage with Arsenal coming in at just under 4% for their fans.

Make sure your child is immunised against MMR As children across Knowsley prepare to start primary school, Public Health experts are advising parents to make sure their children are fully immunised against MMR. All parents of primary school starters are being asked to check their child’s Red Book now to make sure there is a record of two MMR doses and the 4in-1 booster vaccine. If not, parents should contact their GP practice to arrange any further vaccinations that are needed.

Public Health England (PHE) North West is warning that 9000 five-year-olds in the North West may not be fully up-to-date with some routine immunisations.

These worrying estimates, released as part of PHE’s Value of Vaccines campaign, show that some four and five-year-olds are starting school at unnecessary risk of serious diseases compared to the majority of their classmates.

In the UK, dose one of the MMR vaccine, which protects against Measles, Mumps and Rubella, is usually given to infants at around 12 months of age.

A second dose is given before school, usually at three years and four months of age, to ensure best protection.

Two doses of MMR in a lifetime

are needed for a person to be considered fully protected. The 4in-1 pre-school booster is also usually offered at three years and four months of age and protects against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and polio.

To check that your child has received all their vaccines on schedule, visit the NHS website and refer to your child’s Red Book.

Cables start with four Prescot Cables have started their 2019-2020 campaign in impressive style, taking four points from their opening two league games.

The new campaign has brought a lot of changes to Hope Street. Yet another new league structure with a new sponsor, a newly revamped management team and new players brought in to freshen up a squad that finished just outside the play-off places in last seasons campaign.

Yet so far, despite all these changes, the goals this season have so far, come from two players who have been ever present in amber and black colours over the last few years.

Lloyd Dean was the match winner for Cables on Saturday when Cables travelled to Kendal Town for the opening game of the season. His goal on 13 minutes was enough to earn three points for Cables in a hardfought game that should have seen Cables score four or five goals before half time.

The second half was much more of a battle as Kendal grew in confidence and Cables players began to tire on a pitch that had seen heavy rainfall for the past two days. Marcus Burgess, returning to Cables for his second spell at the club was the hero of the hour when he produced a magnificent save to deny Kendal what would have probably been a deserved equaliser The second game of the season saw football return to Hope Street when Clitheroe visited on Tuesday 20 August. In driving rain, a record high crowd for an opening league fixture saw both teams battle out a two all draw.

James Edgar, another Cables stalwart in recent years, scored two goals to ensure that Steve Pilling and Roy Grundy’s side would take a share of the points.

The Emirates FA Cup is not a competition that Cables have had much success in recent years. Having not won a single FA Cup game in five year, the Pesky Bulls travel to Northwich Victoria on bank holiday weekend with the aim of bucking that trend. They will also travel to local rivals Marine on Bank Holiday Monday before returning to Hope Street on August 31 to play Tadcaster Albion.

The future looks bright for Prescot Hockey Club Over the summer Prescot Hockey club competed in the Golborne Summer league with the youngest team out of twelve in the tournament.

With an all teenage line-up and an average age of just 15 the Prescot development team finished second by one point and played some impressive hockey over the ten week tournament.

Captained by nineteen year old Nathan Johnson and with youngsters from the mens and ladies second teams the young team beat several sides with a lot more experience.

The same development team then played in the Golborne Summer Tournament and won the event for the third year running. Mens coach Rob Clarkin deputising as a stand in goalkeeper.

Prescot Hockey play at Sutton Leisure and are looking to expand their mens and ladies sections as they progress to playing in the North League this season.
