RH The Princess Royal visited Kirkby to officially open the new office premises of Citizens Advice Knowsley. Citizens Advice has been operating in Knowsley since 1942 and last year has helped over 4,700 Knowsley residents with a variety of issues including welfare benefits, debt, housing and employment. Princess Anne, who is patron of the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureau, was given a tour of the new premises by chief officer Brian Gouldson. During the visit she met with paid and voluntary staff from across Knowsley. Mr Gouldson said: “I was very impressed by her knowledge of our service and noted that she was particularly interested in hearing about the issues currently affecting Knowsley residents.” During HRH The Princess Royal’s visit to Citizens Advice Knowsley she presented two of their longstanding volunteers with awards to celebrate their contribution. Together Marjie Shillcock and Ron Lewis have provided 47 years of service to Citizens Advice Knowsley. Ron first joined Citizens Advice Knowsley in 1998 as a volunteer clerical worker and has also volunteered as a general advisor. Ron also volunteered to be the first ever receptionist in Huyton Citizens Advice. Marjie, aged 85, originally joined Citizens Advice Knowsley as a general advisor and continues to help the service by volunteering as a receptionist. When asked about volunteering at Citizens Advice, Marjie said: “I have really enjoyed being a volunteer here for 27 years at Citizens Advice Knowsley, so much so I haven’t had a day off in 27 years! I would recommend volunteering with Citizens Advice Knowsley to anyone - it keeps you young!”
