Kirkby school remembers the Liverpool FC Heroes of WWI

SCHOOL HELP TO REMEMBER THE HEROES OF WWI Liverpool Football Club has commemorated LFC players involved in the First World War at a moving ceremony held at the Club’s Kirkby Academy.

During the ceremony, seven trees were planted to create a living legacy for each of the seven LFC players who served and died in the First World War, 100 years ago.

The tree planting ceremony forms part of the national ‘Football Remembers’ campaign, which remembers some of the unsung heroes of the First World War; the footballers of the time, who bravely joined up and went off to war, leaving the hallowed turf of professional football pitches for the trenches of the front line.

The campaign, has been organised in partnership with the Woodland Trust and National Football Museum’s ‘For Club and Country project’, The Premier League, English Football League, Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Association.

Between 1914 and 1918, almost every team in the league sent players to the front, and many never returned.

The Woodland Trust’s project ‘For Club and Country’ also remembers the women, who single-handedly kept the national game alive during the conflict, playing in front of hundreds of thousands of supporters.

Bill Bygroves, LFC Club Chaplain and Red Neighbours team member, said: “This project is a touching way to commemorate football’s important role in the First World War, and recognises each of the players who bravely fought and died for their country.

“These trees will remain here at the LFC Academy for all players, staff and future generations to appreciate.”

HELP TO SHAPE HUYTON VILLAGE CENTRE

Knowsley Council, working alongside public and private sector partners, has great ambitions for Huyton Village Centre.

Huyton Village has an enviable strategic location, with wellestablished road, rail and bus connections to both Liverpool and Manchester.

Alongside the 50,000 local residents who choose Huyton as their home, an extra 2,500 people come into Huyton Village every day to work in the various public, voluntary and private sector organisations based in the village.

The council has recently committed £1.75m to make general improvements to the public space in the village centre. This includes improvements to street lighting in the Village Centre as well as improvements to the shop fronts on Derby Road.

The planning phase of this work is well underway and work is scheduled to start over the coming months.

In addition, work will be complete by Christmas of the installation of state-of-the-art CCTV in Huyton Village Centre.

There are also lots of retail and leisure opportunities in the town centre with a number of sites available for development.

The council is seeking the views of people who visit Huyton Village Centre. Have your say by completing the online survey and your views will then be used to help shape a brighter and better Huyton Village Centre for residents and visitors alike.

The closing date for feedback is Friday, 11 January 2019.

KNIFE ANGEL TO COME TO LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL The Knife Angel, created by artist Alfie Bradley as a national monument against violence and aggression has arrived in Liverpool.

The sculpture, which stands 27ft high, has been installed outside Liverpool Cathedral and will remain in place until 31 January 2019.

The memorial is to those whose lives have been affected by knife crime and created at the British Ironworks Centre.

The sculpture was created with 100,000 knives that were surrendered and collected during nationwide amnesties in 2015/2016.

The centre provided knife banks for the amnesty with 43 police forces across the country involved.

Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool said: “Sadly scarcely a day goes by without hearing another tragic story of knife crime. Through hosting the Knife Angel at Liverpool Cathedral we want to show solidarity with the victims of this crime and make a powerful statement to everyone who comes to visit.

“As people encounter the artwork, we hope this helps them make sense of the issues it raises by coming in, lighting a candle or reflecting in one of our chapels.

We will continue to pray for peace in our city and beyond.

“As well as standing alongside all those affected by knife crime we want to urge those who carry knives to recognise the pain they cause themselves and others as we work to a day when we truly see peace in our streets”.

to Liverpool Cathedral said that in his role as a nurse clinician at the Royal Liverpool Hospital he has spoken to 95,000 young people across the area of the realities of being involved with knife crime.

Inspired by the story of the attempt to site the Knife Angel in Trafalgar Square, Rob contacted Clive Knowles CEO of the British Ironworks Centre to see about coming to Liverpool.

Rob said: “We’re hoping that

by bringing the Knife Angel to Liverpool Cathedral it opens the debate about knife crime and its impact.

“It’s not about scaring people but to get them to start talking about its effect on real people. Something I witness in my job on a regular basis.

“This is about prevention of knife crime, using the Knife Angel so people to understand how carrying a knife and the reality of knife crime will not only affect other people, but them personally.”

Players and supporters at West Park Rugby Club came together in a poignant show of solidarity to throw their backing behind the No More Knives campaign, performing a moving rendition of the song ‘Stand By Me’.

The campaign was set up due to a huge increase in knife crime in the last 18 months, and has since seen a flurry of support from local businesses, colleges and schools.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the devastating impact that knife crime is having on not only the country, regions, and local communities, but most importantly the individuals and family of those who are harmed or lose their lives to knife related incidents.

In the year ending in March 2018 there were 40,100 national offences involving a knife or sharp object, the highest it has been in eight years.

In just over a 12-month period, we have seen three devastating cases of local knife crime incidents resulting in the loss of life.

Danny Fox was killed on Westfield Street, St Helens on 2 September 2016, Sam Cooke died whilst celebrating his 21st birthday in Liverpool on the 21 October 2017 and college student Adam Ellison lost his life whilst out in Prescot on the 4 November 2017.

Adam’s mum, Joyce, said: “No child should go before a parent, the boys have been stolen from us. We want to seek justice and prevention of further incidents, to try and stop knife crime and prevent anyone else having to go through the same pain. Thank you West Park Rugby Club. The support of the players and supporters means a lot.”

Adam’s sister, Jo, said: “The support makes your heart warmer and helps you. Love helps.”

BIG HELP LAUNCH NEW INITIATIVE The Big Help Project has launched its latest initiative to tackle food inequality in Tower Hill, Kirkby in November and are currently taking applications for membership.

The Club, which offers a membership-based scheme to access quality food at affordable prices opened in November.

The Big Help Food Club provides quality food, including fresh food, to Food Club members for a weekly fee.

All stock is sourced through a partnership with FareShare, which redistributes quality surplus stock from retailers across the country that would otherwise go to landfill.

Membership is open to all, and the project aims to not only increase accessibility to food, but to also become a local resource for every across the community, regardless of income.

Since registering the first membership in August, there are now over 100 members, and the Big Help Project are

delighted to confirm that a new Big Help Food Club Service has begun in Tower Hill, Kirkby.

Located in the Tower Hill Community Centre, Ebony Road, the Tower Hill Food Club will be open of a Tuesday and Thursday, 1:30pm to 15:00.

Speaking at the opening of their last club in Carr Meadow Hey Bootle, Peter Dowd MP for Bootle, said: “It’s a real shame that families are in a position where they have to rely on food banks and food clubs to manage, but thankfully the charity and voluntary sector always come up trumps.

“The simple truth is that people shouldn’t be in a position where they struggle to feed themselves and their families.

“The crisis is only getting worse due to the government’s austerity policies which penalise the most vulnerable whilst giving tax cuts to the richest and large companies.

“I want to thank the Big Help Project for their new initiative and for inviting me for the opening of the food club. It truly is grass roots engagement, it was great to see and hear from people within the local community

where the food club is based and where I grew up.

“The only way to change this dreadful policy is to change the Government.”

Upon receiving confirmation of the opening of the Tower Hill Club, The Big Help Food Club co-ordinator Trish Barkey said: “With the cost of living spiralling and incomes stagnating, being able to afford food is a real concern for many people.

“The Food Club gives everyone a way to access good food without breaking the bank, and equally importantly is a way for the community to come together and support each other.”

Members are guaranteed to select 10-15 items per week.

Membership is £3.50 a week in cash or £12 per month via standing order and operates on a first come first served basis.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Mayor of Prescot’s Charity Christmas Concert will be taking place on Thursday 6 December from 7.00pm8.15pm at Prescot Parish Church, Church Street, Prescot L34 1LA. Tickets £5 on the door (accompanied under 16’s free). All proceeds donated to the Mayor of Prescot’s Charities, Whiston Hospital and other local community groups.

CHRISTMAS TREE OF REMEMBRANCE The Friends of Prescot Cemetery & Churchyard will present their annual Tree of Remembrance service on Sunday 9 December at 1pm in Prescot Cemetery.

This will be an opportunity to dedicate a bauble to a loved one and enjoy carols and refreshments around the Christmas tree.

HOSPICE HAS A BALL AT STRICTLY FUNDRAISER Supporters of Willowbrook Hospice had a Fab-u-lous time at hospice’s Strictly Glitter Ball, raising more than £10, 000.

Hosted by Radio City’s breakfast show presenter, Leanne Campbell, the event saw over 250 guests enjoy a three course meal at The Venue, Huyton before watching eight amateur dancers take to the floor alongside professional dancers from the Silhouette Dance Club, St Helens.

All the dancers taking part achieved high scores but it was Willowbrook senior staff nurse, Neil Sutcliffe and his professional partner Tina Thomas, who secured four 10s for their A-MAZZING American Smooth to ‘Singing in the Rain’.

The pair were crowned Strictly Glitter Ball 2018 champions and picked up the coveted glitterball trophy after coming out on top with the judges.

A special mini glitterball was also awarded to hospice supporter, Michelle Mutch after a guest vote crowned her and professional partner, James ‘The People’s Champions’ following their spectacular Samba. Michelle, 50 from Eccleston, St Helens dedicated her Strictly experience to her father Ted Glover who was cared for at the Prescot-based hospice and her mum Evelyn.

Diane Swann, senior fundraiser at Willowbrook, was ‘over the moon with the response’ to the event. Diane said: “All the dancers were fantastic and on behalf of Willowbrook, I’d like to congratulate them for their commitment and dedication to learning to dance and to supporting the hospice in such an amazing way.

“I’d also like to thank our expert panel of judges and Marie Smith and all the professional dancers from the Silhouette Dance Club.

“The audience was incredibly generous and it is wonderful that the event managed to raise over £10, 000 – every penny of which will enable us continue to care and support our patients and their families across Knowsley and St Helens.”

“Our trees create a very small carbon footprint as they are delivered direct to you from one of our local farms.

COUNCIL PREDICTING A BALANCED BUDGET NEXT YEAR At a recent Knowsley Council’s cabinet meeting, it was reported that the Council has identified funding to enable a balanced budget in 2019/20 without the need for further cuts to services or jobs.

Knowsley has been one of the hardest hit councils in the country in terms of the Government’s funding cuts.

The Government has cut Knowsley’s funding by 50% since 2010 (a total of £100m) and this equates to £485 less funding for every person in the Borough – compared to the England average of just £188.

In managing these drastic funding reductions, Knowsley has sought to avoid cutting the services it provides to the most vulnerable in our community, but all services have had to be reviewed to see where

efficiencies can be made.

This has resulted in some services stopping altogether and others being delivered differently.

Cllr Jayne Aston, cabinet member for resources, said: “We have managed some very challenging budget reductions over the last ten years, but we have always tried to ensure that the services our residents need and value are available.

“We have taken a planned approach to meeting these financial challenges. 2019/20 is the last year of the three year budgets agreed in March 2017 and already includes £5.7m worth of savings that have previously been consulted upon and agreed and will still need to be delivered.

“The Council is facing an additional budget shortfall of £2m, but has developed a plan to fund this without impacting further on council services.

“Whilst this situation will be continually monitored, our three year budget strategy has given us the ability to implement our savings in a planned way.

“Whilst we await the Government’s Local Funding Settlement, we are optimistic that we will not have to make further cuts to our services or our workforce next year.”

A full budget update and with recommendations for the 2019/20 budget will be considered by Cabinet in February 2019.

As part of its planning application, Anwyl Homes Lancashire has confirmed that it will make a number of Section 106 contributions that will directly benefit the local community. Anwyl will contribute £800,000 towards the installation of traffic lights at the junction of Rimmer Avenue and Court Hey Road and the upgrading of footpaths to part of Bowring Park Avenue.

In addition, a significant contribution of £582,000 will be made towards providing affordable housing in the Huyton area.

Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, in Knowsley, Cllr Tony Brennan, said: “Demand for new homes in the Borough is extremely high and it is important that we have a mix of homes in Knowsley to suit all needs.

“This will be a very attractive development, given the site’s fantastic location close to transport links, and we expect it to be a very popular place to live.”

KNOWSLEY ARCHIVE’S ‘DIARY OF A DUDE’ CHARTS SOLDIER’S WWI EXPERIENCE A World War One naval diary and photograph collection held in Knowsley’s archive will be conserved and made accessible for generations to come thanks to £9,500 National Lottery Funding.

Knowsley’s archive (the ARK) successfully bid for a Heritage Lottery Fund ‘First World War: then and now’ grant, made possible thanks to National Lottery players.

The ‘Diary of a Dude’ project will transform John (aka Jack) Victor Pulman’s fascinating WWI diary and photos into an online resource that is available for everyone to access and enjoy.

The diary provides a detailed first-hand record of a man serving in the navy during the First World War and is unique in Knowsley’s archive collection. It begins in 1914 and ends in 1918 and includes descriptions of Jack's experiences during this period as he travels through India and North Africa.

Jack was a keen photographer, artist and musician, and the diary includes a large number of his photographs that show himself and friends; people he met during this period; local customs and places he visited, such as snake charmers and the Egyptian pyramids and Sphinx.

Also inserted into the diary are a few hand-painted illustrations, usually portraying maps of where he has been or is currently stationed.

As a keen musician, Jack was a member of a musical group, the Deolali Dudes (usually just referred to as ‘the Dudes’), who entertained the camp they were stationed at and hand-drawn programmes for their concerts are included in the diary.

The help of two local voluntary organisations has been enlisted to help bring to life the diary’s incredible stories.

Comics Youth, the charity that work with

vulnerable young people using comic books to encourage them to explore their own stories, want to use the diary to inspire the young people to create comic books that bring aspects and episodes of Jack's remarkable story to life.

Meanwhile, the Huyton branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A) are keen to make use of transcripts and digitised extracts from the diary to complement their research into the First World War period which they plan to commemorate with a community event.

Cllr Sean Donnelly, Knowsley cabinet member for health and social care, said: “We’re delighted The ARK has received support for our Diary of a Dude First World War Centenary project thanks to National Lottery players.

“It’s great we can bring the amazing life of Jack Pulman, member of the Dudes, to the attention of a new generation of people over 100 years after he first put pen to paper.”

RAINFORD HIGH TO HOST CHRISTMAS FAYRE WITH AUTISM-FRIENDLY SESSION Rainford High will be hosting its annual Christmas Fayre on Thursday 6 December which will include an autism-friendly half hour slot for those with autism spectrum disorder.

From 5pm, the school will have select areas with dimmed lighting and no loud music. The Santa’s Grotto will also follow suit, allowing attendees to book a place and meet the man himself without any queues, resulting in a quieter and less stressful environment.

As always, the fayre is open to all of the community and not just for people with children who attend the school. Both staff and pupils are encouraging local people to attend the event and help raise money for charities in the area.

Rainford High will be transformed into a festive wonderland with craft stalls, games as well as offering a range of delicious food and drink, including a hog roast, bubble waffles, mulled wine and yummy mince pies.

A selection of speciality gins will be available to purchase, making it an ideal time to do some Christmas shopping.

In addition, the modern foreign languages department will be running an environmental stall selling goods made from recycled materials in a bid to highlight current environmental issues.

There will also be exclusive performances from the school’s talented brass band and choir.

Year groups have already been making their own contributions ahead of the event. Year 7s have brought in donations for the local food bank, whilst Year 8 and 9s have purchased a Christmas gift for a young person their age to donate to the Ormskirk Hospital Toy Appeal for children in hospital over the Christmas period.

Older students are assisting with raffle and tombola prizes as well as gifts for the Santa’s grotto.

This Christmas the people of Merseyside are invited to visit Santa Claus in his Acorn Farm Grotto.

Situated in a Christmassy barn with his trusty elves as helpers, Santa will be on hand to meet children, listen to their Christmas wishes and give them a present to take home.

Santa will be in his Acorn Farm Grotto on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 December between 12.00pm and 3.00pm. The cost for entry is £6.00 per child, which includes an age appropriate present from Santa (plus farm admission of £2.00 for children / £3.00 for adults babies under 1 year old are admitted to the farm free of charge).

HUYTON CARE HOME’S HIGH PRAISE FROM INDUSTRY WATCHDOG A Knowsley care home has been praised by industry watchdog the Care Quality Commission following their latest inspection.

Aaron Grange Care Home, in Huyton, was rated ‘Good’ in all five categories of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

This gave the home an overall ‘Good’, maintaining the rating from their previous inspection.

The CQC report stated: “Everyone who lived in the home said they felt safe.

“We found that staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to support people effectively and safely.

“Everyone living in the home was very complementary about the attitude of the staff and the way they were treated. We observed staff speaking to people respectfully; they were extremely patient and approached people with a smile.

KIRKBY SCHOOL CREATES ARMISTICE DAY TRIBUTE

St Modwen has displayed a touching tribute in Kirkby Town Centre from local primary school, Kirkby C of E, in honour of Armsitice Day – marking one hundred years since the end of the First World War. Local children at Kirkby C of E Primary

School showed their support for Armistice Day through art, creating a display using hundreds of poppies ahead of Remembrance Sunday. It was on display in a vacant unit in Kirkby Town Centre as part of the hundred years remembrance.

Mike Matthews, Kirkby Town Centre manager, said: “The children of Kirkby C of E have done a fantastic job. The weekend saw events happening across the globe and we’re glad that we were able to show our own support here in Kirkby Town Centre.

“We think it’s great that the children at the local primary school have given up their

time to support Armistice Day and we wanted to show off their hard work.”

Nicola Tinsley, teaching assistant at Kirkby C of E Primary School, said: “We always do something for Armistice Day and make sure the children are fully involved.

This year, with it being one hundred years to mark the end of the First World War, we wanted to do something a little different.

Double award success for hospice gardening team Willowbrook Hospice has scooped two prestigious North West in Bloom awards for the high standards of its grounds and gardens.

LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR SCOOPS REGIONAL AWARD! Whiston entrepreneur Julie Anne Parker of Million Stars Sustainable Events has been named as ‘Entrepreneur For Good’ at the prestigious Great British Entrepreneur Awards North.

The awards, now in their sixth year celebrates the hard work and inspiring stories of entrepreneurs across the UK. The award ceremony itself was held in November at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Francesca James, founder of the awards said: “2018 has been a record year for the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in the number of entries we received, over 3,000. But the quality of

applications has been above and beyond what we’ve seen in previous years.

GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY

A ground-breaking event to mark the start of restoration work at one of Merseyside's most historic parks has taken place.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, attended the ground breaking event to officially launch the start of the £2million restoration project at Bowring Park, Huyton.

The project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will see the restoration of the stable block and coach house, the creation of a new café and meeting rooms, parkland landscaping and a park activity programme. The work is expected to be completed by Spring 2019.

The golf course will continue to operate while the works are underway, with activities run by the Friends of Bowring Park re-commencing once the work is complete.

Knowsley Council recently stepped in to keep the golf course open, following the collapse of the private sector company which ran it.

Cllr Powell said: “Bowring Park is an important landmark in Knowsley, with a wealth of historic features, including buildings, trees and gardens.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, we will be able to transform this historic park for the benefit of the local community, restoring it to its former glory, preserving it for future generations and creating a significant visitor attraction for the region”.

Million Stars was founded in 2015, their mission is to see all events reach zero waste outputs in the next five years.

A business built on innovation, Million Stars have worked with organisations such as UoL, LJMU, RTC North and Innovate UK to develop a five-year strategy for festival organisers that will completely eradicate some of the 23,500T of waste generated at UK Music festivals each year.

Million Stars also recover abandoned camping waste and work with prisons to either repurpose equipment for re-use through rent a tent and chair hire initiatives or upcycle waste beyond repair it into new products.

Education News Pupils design mural for Prescot Community Police and Fire Station Pupils from a Knowsley primary school have been competing to create a new mural for Prescot Community Police and Fire Station.

Youngsters from St Mary and St Paul’s CE Primary School were invited to create a police-themed picture to represent the station which was opened in January.

The picture will be used to create a paving stone mural outside the station which will be unveiled in the spring and will match the fire’s service mural which is already in position outside the station.

A total of 15 designs were created by youngsters and submitted to the Police and Crime Commissioner, Jane Kennedy, who chose a brightly-coloured picture by Year 2 pupil Fryderyk as the winning entry.

To thank the school for its contribution, more than 50 pupils and staff were invited to the station to have a tour and give the young people the opportunity to look around a police van and fire engine and try on the uniforms.

Emily Spurrell, joined the visit to announce the winner and help show pupils around. She said: “It was a pleasure to meet the pupils and thank them for their efforts in designing a police-themed mural for Prescot Community Fire and Police Station.

“There were some fantastic pictures and it was a hard choice, but Fryderyk’s design was clearly a winner. I’m now looking forward to seeing his picture brought to life outside the station.

“I’d like to thank St Mary and St Paul’s CE Primary School for taking part in this initiative and it was great to spend some time with the children as they took a tour of the facilities in Prescot.”

Headteacher at St Mary and St Paul’s CE Primary School, Iain Parks said: “Our hope is to give the children opportunities that stick in their mind and develop their aspirations for the future. This visit did just that, with many of our pupils expressing their desire to work for both the Police Force ad Fire Brigade in the future.

PUPILS MEET WITH LOCAL MP

On Friday 23 November members of Kirkby High School Student Parliament met with Knowsley MP George Howarth.

George spoke about many contemporary issues facing young people in Knowsley and explained his role as a Member of Parliament. Students were then given the opportunity to partake in a question and answer session.

Questions ranged from the need for food banks, the impact of Brexit, to the effectiveness and characteristics of leadership. George was very impressed with the students questions and the students oracy skills really shone through.

Kirkby High School is looking to build on this relationship with our local representative to the betterment of all young people in our community. Watch this space for further updates.

Ex-teacher shares story of local man and ex-pupil, who died in battle during World War One

STORIES FROM THE PAST Locals Dot Hawkes, from the Lathom History Society and Margaret Fairclough, a local ex-Bickerstaffe CE School teacher, visited the children of Bickerstaffe CE School to share their knowledge of local history relating to World War One. Margaret, formerly Miss Alcock, who taught in school from 1960-1972, is a relative of fallen soldier Private William Pye. She mesmerised the children when she spoke about his journey from being a pupil at the Bickerstaffe CE School until the end of his life, when he served as a soldier in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Private Pye, who rests in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church in Bickerstaffe, died in battle in Basra on 9 March 1917. He was just 21-years-old.

Horses play a significant part in the local community, so Dot went on to speak about the role of horses in the war. She shared lots of very interesting facts about this and showed photographs of many different types of horses, which were remounted at Lathom Park, in order to prepare them for war.

As part of their learning, the school held an armistice competition and the winners received a book token and a signed copy of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse.

Maggie Teachen, headteacher at Bickerstaffe CE School said: “The pupils and staff have thoroughly enjoyed the local focus on World War One learning this year “They were very keen to learn about William and his journey, especially as he was a former pupil of our school, which makes their learning more meaningful “They were intrigued to learn about the horses and the significant role that they played in the war effort.

“I’m sure that we will have many children trying to check horse hooves for numbers, to see if the horse descends from a war horse!

THREE KNOWSLEY SCHOOLS SCOOP REGIONAL EDUCATION AWARDS

Three schools in Knowsley were honoured at the prestigious Educate Awards ceremony on Friday 16 November.

The awards, in partnership with Copyrite Systems and Ricoh, is now in its seventh year and is the largest education awards in the North West.

Over 600 guests gathered for the Educate Awards ceremony held at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, hosted by broadcaster Simon ‘Rossie’ Ross.

On the night, 21 awards were handed out to schools in the Liverpool City Region, Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.

Halewood Academy received the Innovative and Creative Literacy Award for its project, ‘Pride and Promises Poetry Anthology’.

Created by teacher, Miss Archer, she tasked students and staff to write poems around the theme of ‘Pride and Promises’. Poems came flooding in and the school decided to publish the poems in an anthology which they made available to purchase via Amazon.

The initiative has had a long-standing impact on the entire school and as they put it: “If you can be published and sell a book, what can’t you do?”

Other finalists in this category included Bishop David Sheppard CE Primary School from Southport and Queen’s Park CE/URC Primary School in St Helens.

Northwood Community Primary School in Kirkby won the Community Partnership Award for its work with charity FareShare and Magic Breakfast.

The school identified that a significant number of pupils were arriving to school in the morning not having a healthy breakfast, or any breakfast at all. With the support of organisation Magic Breakfast, the school now offers pupils a proper start to the day with cereal, juices and bagels.

Additional support from charity FareShare, who redistribute surplus food to different organisations, provided governors with funding to enable all pupils to receive a free lunch. These community partnerships have resulted in better behaved, more settled and ready to learn children at Northwood.

Other schools in the running for this award was Academy @ Worden in Leyland, Bickerstaffe CE Primary School and The Hollins in Accrington.

Also honoured on the evening was Plantation Primary School, Halewood, for its outstanding commitment to sport. The school won this top award last year and has built upon its past success by using sport to achieve wider school aims. One such aim was to improve parental engagement, and this was achieved through various parent/child workshops. It has also increased opportunities for children with SEND and helped children create team-based competitions.

Plantation Primary School fought off stiff competition within the category from the likes of Saughall All Saints Primary School in Chester and St Aloysius Catholic Primary School in Roby.

The evening also saw the premiere of the Educate Awards Super Choir Children in Need music video, ‘We are all Stars’. The recording features the voices of over 300 students from local schools, with all proceeds from the sales going to the charity.

FANTASTIC YEAR FOR CENTRE

A multi-million pound education hub at Myerscough College’s centre at Croxteth Park on Merseyside has had a fantastic first year.

The state-of-the-art new animal and equine studies centre was officially completed back in April, and complements the college’s current provision at the site, which has seen the former Glendale council depot on the site transformed into new, expanded teaching facilities. The new-look Myerscough College Croxteth Centre is made up of single-storey buildings sited behind a wall opposite the home farm area of the site.

The new training facilities include three animal studies blocks along with stabling, aviaries and pens for goats, alpacas and hens adjacent to the Grade II listed

former Laundry House. Two other buildings have been converted for animal housing and dog grooming, and a third for reptiles, amphibians and tropical species, as well as accommodation for staff and students.

The development was granted planning permission back in November, 2016, with work commencing last May. The development enables Myerscough to continue and enhance providing students with a first class environment to deliver quality education and training.

The city council has contributed to the scheme by way of a discounted rent on the site over the next 10 years, in addition to £1 million from the College and £2 million from the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Ingredients 1 large onion, chopped 2 sticks celery, thinly sliced 340g extra-lean minced beef 2 tsp mild chilli powder 410g can chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp tomato purée 400g can kidney bean in water, drained and rinsed 300ml beef or chicken stock 300g wholewheat penne For the topping ½ x 568g tub 0% fat Greek yogurt 2 eggs, beaten 50g Red Leicester cheese, coarsely grated 1 small garlic clove, crushed Method Heat a splash of oil in a frying pan, add the onion and celery, season with pepper and a little salt, then cook until soft. Remove vegetables and set aside. Brown the mince in the pan, a handful at a time, tossing with a fork as you go. Only add a splash of oil if the mixture begins to stick too much. Once browned, tip into a sieve to remove any excess fat.

Return mince and cooked veg to the frying pan, add the chilli powder, tomatoes, tomato purée, beans and stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 mins.

Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Cook the pasta according to pack instructions. Drain, stir into the mince and spoon into a large lasagne dish. Mix the yogurt, eggs, cheese and garlic together and season lightly. Spoon over the top of the pasta and bake for 20-25 mins or until lightly browned.

Winter tips and advice With the winter weather already upon us, we have a number of tips and advice to share with you to help you stay warm and safe through the winter months, including personal safety, gas safety and fire safety.

The cold weather can affect your home and the most common problems can be loss of water supply, loss of heating, leaking toilets and sinks not draining - this is often because of frozen pipes. This should rectify itself as the weather warms slightly however you can speed this process up yourself.

If you know where your stop tap is, empty the cupboard that the tap is in and try to get some warm air circulating around the pipe. You could try blowing warm air on the pipe using a hairdryer or situate a small heater in front of the cupboard. After a few minutes you should find that the water starts to defrost.

Please do not leave any heated appliance unattended during this process.

Often the condensate pipe on your boiler freezes, this is the pipe from your boiler which leads to an outside drain.

How do I thaw the frozen (condensate) pipe from my boiler?

• Use hot water – not boiling – heated by a kettle or a microwave and pour over the end of the pipe where it is frozen using a suitable container like a watering can.

• Hold a hot water bottle or heat wrap around the condensate pipe.

• Once the pipe has thawed you should re-set your boiler by holding in the re-set button for 10 seconds and wait for the boiler to re-fire.

If your toilet or sink is not draining this is likely not a blockage that can be rectified by a plumber. Before reporting this as a repair try pouring some hot water down as this may defrost the frozen water in the pipes.

Leaving your heating on a low setting throughout the night will help to stop any pipes freezing. More advice and how to protect your home can be found on the United Utilities website.

Outdoors with The Hairy Gardener Hello again Gardeners, Have you noticed the vegetables we eat around Christmas time taste better after a frost has been on them.

Normally frost is the gardener’s nemesis when we are planting out our tomatoes and peppers in the spring but the veg we eat now frost is a bonus dramatically improving the flavour.

Here is a rough guide to what happens when frost attacks. When the temperature falls, the water inside the plant freezes and turns to ice, this ruptures the rigid wall that surrounds each cell causing them to burst.

Now the good bit, plants that are able to survive freezing temperatures have over years evolved a way of making their own antifreeze, this natural antifreeze is a tasty one.

As the plants sensors detect falling temperatures,the plant rapidly ramp up production of enzymes that break down the starch which is normally an energy store into sugars. It is the release of these sugars that ups the concentration of solids within their tissues and prevents freezing and hey presto sweeter vegetables for our Christmas dinner.

crops like leeks, kale and Brussel sprouts.

But wait, there is an exception, there has to be doesn’t there, and that is the potato.

Although the same thing happens, in the potato’s case the excessive sugars and lack of starch cause the tubers to become mushy textured and they often caramelise as they cook.

On a Christmas gift note, how about buying the gardener in your life or if you reader are the gardener treat him/her or yourself to a couple of fruit trees or bushes. You won’t regret it in so many ways, less shop bought fruit and most importantly organically grown.

Remember a fruit tree is not just for Christmas it’s for life. And don’t forget the wild birds at this time of year, they’re relying on us more and more as the years go by so hang out some bird food and a dish of water. Until next time.

HELP US HELP YOU THIS WINTER BY TAKING A LOOK AT OUR ANIMATION North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has released a short animation to help people decide when to visit a walk-in centre.

Due to the added pressures that winter places on the NHS, it’s vital that people choose the right service to meet their treatment needs.

The number of people attending A&E and calling 999 for an ambulance is growing each year. Ambulance services, hospitals, GP surgeries and walk-in centres get especially busy during winter. Choosing the right service best suited to your illness or injury will help relieve the pressure on these services.

North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has three walk-in centres in Knowsley (Halewood, Huyton and Kirkby) and one walk-in centre in Litherland, Sefton. They provide consultation, advice and treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, including: • Infections and rashes (if measles is suspected, you are advised to stay at home and phone your GP or NHS 111 for advice) • Minor cuts and bruises • Minor burns and strains • Emergency contraception and advice for under 25s • Insect and animal bites • Stomach aches and upsets • Stitches and dressing care • Coughs and flu-like symptoms Halewood, Huyton and Kirkby walk-in centres are open from 8am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 9pm on Sundays and bank holidays. Litherland Walk-in Centre is open 8am8pm every day.

By choosing the right health service, you will be better placed to look after yourself and others this winter.

This further reinforces the Help Us Help You national campaign, aimed at easing the pressure on NHS urgent care and emergency services.

The following tips will help you and your family stay well this winter: 1) Self-care is the best choice to treat minor illnesses and injuries. A large range of common illnesses and injuries can be treated at home or simply with over-the-counter medicines and plenty of rest.

2) NHS 111 If you need advice fast and you're not sure what to do, call 111 for health care advice that is fast, easy and free. You can also get answers to hundreds of health questions, including common childhood illnesses at www.nhs.uk 24 hours a day!

3) Pharmacists (chemists) are a great source of health care service advice and information. They are experts in medicines and will help you decide if you need to see a doctor.

4) GPs can help if you have an illness or injury that won’t go away and any long standing condition.

Other examples may include vomiting, ear pain, stomach ache and back ache.

5) Walk-in Centres provide consultations, advice and

treatment for new minor injuries and illnesses.

Louise Johnston, head of service ambulatory and urgent care said: “With the festive season fast approaching, it’s really important to choose the right health service this winter that can best support you and your family.

“You can help yourself to stay well by keeping warm, having your flu jab if eligible, eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of fluids.

“If you do become unwell, its essential you know what to do and which service will ensure you have a speedy recovery. Our walk-in centres are there to provide an important service to the community but they cannot do it alone.”

PEOPLE URGED TO DRINK LESS AND ENJOY MORE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON As we approach the festive season a drive to reduce drunkenness is underway in Knowsley and across the region.

‘Drink Less Enjoy More’ (DLEM) increases awareness of the laws that it is illegal to serve someone who is undoubtedly drunk and it is illegal to buy a drink for someone who is clearly drunk.

You could be refused service at a pub, bar or club if you are evidently drunk and if you buy a drink for someone who is clearly drunk you personally could be fined £1000.

The aim is to encourage people to cut back on how much they drink at home before going out, as well as how much they consume when visiting bars, pubs and clubs.

Merseyside Police are actively enforcing these laws and will be providing extra patrols.

Cllr Sean Donnelly, Knowsley cabinet member for health and social care, said: “Drunkenness can have immediate health consequences such as alcohol poisoning, and can contribute to sexual violence, accidents and violent crimes.

“It’s simple really, if you’re going on a night out drink less before heading out and less when you’re in bars, pubs and clubs and enjoy your night more.”

Former war hospital pays its respects Staff, governors and volunteers from North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust joined in a short service at Hollins Park Hospital to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One. Hollins Park Hospital became known as the Lord Derby War Hospital during World War One, treating more than 56,000 injured and shell-shocked war casualties between 1915 and 1920.

The Trust’s Chaplain Pam Lovatt led the special remembrance service, which ended with Trust’s chief executive Simon Barber, chairman Helen Bellairs and service user volunteers laying wreaths made by service users from the hospital’s inpatient wards in the memorial garden at Hollins Park.

Trust volunteer Stella McGeachin, who read at the service, said: “We were honoured to attend the remembrance service and to

read a poem by war poet Ivor Gurney, who was treated at the Lord Derby Hospital due to shell shock.

“It’s so important that we remember and pay our respects to those who gave their lives for our country, as well as those who worked tirelessly to save the lives of countless soldiers.”

Helen Bellairs, chairman of the Trust said: “We are extremely proud to hold a service of remembrance to commemorate 100 years since World War One ended. Our facility at Winwick was one of the largest military hospitals in the UK at the time, providing vital care for British and Commonwealth soldiers.”

As the event drew to a close, staff, governors and volunteers paid their respects by observing a two-minute silence, to remember and honour everyone who has lost their lives fighting for their country.

n the biggest ceremony to date, 850 guests came together at this year’s Knowsley Business Awards, to celebrate the success of individuals and organisations from across Knowsley and beyond.

A total of thirteen awards were handed out on the night, with a further 10 receiving a Highly Commended accolade and in a surprise announcement, a Judges Choice Award for Prescot Ambassadors was presented.

hanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery, we are currently undertaking a project, called Diary of a Dude, revolving around the incredible First World War diary and photographs of Jack Pulman.

Having been a merchant seaman, Jack signed up for the Navy in October 1914 whilst working in the Hong Kong area, which is when his journal entries begin.

His first two entries read: “October 30th,1914. Hong Kong. Volunteers wanted for Royal Navy to complete various ships company. Enquired terms of service and finding them satisfactory, volunteered. October 31st, accepted and signed on for the period of the war.”

As you can imagine, whenever we have something like Jack’s diary donated to the archive, we’re desperate to look inside and find out more about the people associated with the document.

However, the first priority has to be making sure we can preserve the document as well as possible and make it available to the public for research and study.

In the case of Jack’s diary, it was clear that a lot of work was needed before making it available for research.

The journal was in a poor state, with extensive water damage (appropriately for a naval diary!) and the spine of the volume was very weak, meaning that the diary could not be opened fully without causing further damage.

Included with the diary are almost 150 photographs and images. The majority of these have been glued directly onto pages of the diary and many of these were also in poor condition.

As we first looked through the diary, we were delighted to find that Jack was a musician and that he formed a band with a few friends, calling themselves the Deolali Dudes and performing at various entertainment concerts the men would put on for each other.

The Deolali part of their name comes from one of the army camps that Jack and some his fellow sailors went to for rest and recuperation.

The Deolali transit camp was in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, India and had been a British camp since 1849. It continued to be used by the British during the First and Second World Wars and became a camp notorious for both being unpleasant and for the psychological problems of the many service personnel that passed through it.

This latter part of its reputation gave birth to the phrase ‘gone doolally’ (a derivation of Deolali). Whatever Jack

As we’re into the Christmas season, it’s worth highlighting Christmas 1915 on board Jack’s They’d run out ship, as what Jack calls a “catastrophe” had of spuds. “Pity happened: they’d run our Christmas out of spuds. “Pity our Christmas dinner,” dinner Jack writes. The dinner ended up being: “a proper scrape up...a little bit of tough mutton and a few half cooked marrowfat peas...while the sweets consisted of a bit of workhouse duff that we had managed to knock up. The wines (don’t skit): one whole bottle of bulldog beer per man.”

Of course, the majority of the diary is concerned with Jack’s time on board ship and is filled with descriptions of skirmishes and battles, as well as their daily routine of stopping and searching local shipping traffic in the Red Sea and off the east coast of Africa.

His photographs include images of enemy ships, prisoners and local boats being searched, as well as weaponry and serious-looking officers.

As the diary continues through the War, Jack’s descriptions of daily activity become more and more brief, perhaps reflecting how normal and mundane these extraordinary circumstances were becoming to him.

The emphasis in his entries shifts from describing naval activity to taking more pleasure in describing places they pass through or the free time that he and his colleagues clearly relished.

His photographs also begin to reflect this, with some beautiful landscape and architecture photography, images of local people he encounters on his travels, and an increasing number of images showing colleagues relaxing and enjoying themselves.

Jack even shares his camera with colleagues, resulting in his friend Kerry providing an early example of the selfie: photographing himself looking in a mirror!

The project is in the early days and we’re only just getting to know Jack. As we continue to transcribe the diary, we know we’ll uncover more amazing stories and images. Look out for more details over the coming months!

“Hellfire!” screeched the apparition, but Mike shook his head and said, “No, let’s see what you really look like or I’ll banish you from here for good!”

The demonic-looking figure slowly transformed into a sadlooking old man with long white hair and an old-fashioned black suit and waistcoat. “This was my home,” he said in a soft broken voice.

“Peter, these people live here now, and you’re scaring them

and their children,” Mike told the ghost, who suddenly vanished.

“He’s gone to his old room,” said Mike, “I shan’t be a minute.”

He left the kitchen and went upstairs. When he came back down he said to Mr and Mrs Jones, “Look, you have four rooms and a box room. Peter has agreed to stay in the box room if you put a sign on the door that says ‘Peter’s Room’ and he has apologised for scaring everyone.

Eddie and Linda agreed to the condition, and a plate bearing the words ‘Peter’s Room’ was put on the tiny box room, and ‘Hellfire’ never bothered the family again, but he was heard singing carols in his room on

The development has the potential to create over 650 jobs to the local economy, as well as over 800 construction jobs.

HALEWOOD FOOTBALL ACADEMY SCORES GENEROUS SPONSORSHIP

An opticians in Halewood is supporting its neighbour, Halewood Town Junior Football Academy, with a sponsorship package for the season ahead.

Specsavers in Halewood, which opened in January this year, felt compelled to support the football academy after learning of the valuable role it plays for young people in the local community.

As well as donating £400 towards a new kit for its players, the Specsavers store, which is also based on Leather Lane, has pledged a further £100 towards important sports equipment for the academy.

The football academy, which was set up 18 months ago is part of Halewood Town Football Club, formed 20 years ago.

The academy already boasts 100 members, and is encouraging more young people in the area to take part in sport.

Last year the academy also created its first all-girls team and has big ambitions boost its growth by building more teams for both girls and boys in the future.

Store director at Specsavers in Halewood, Adam Omrod said: “We’ve been part of the local community here on Leather Lane for nearly a year now and have witnessed how much affection and support there is for the academy first hand through our customers.

“Many have children, nieces, nephews or grandchildren who play football with the academy, and this has encouraged us to want to do our bit to show our support for this important local organisation.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to sponsor the academy with kit and equipment that will make a difference for the teams this season and beyond.”

Dean Knight, a coach from Halewood Town Junior Football Team said: “The sponsorship from Specsavers is fantastic – we are delighted to have their support and it really will make a difference this season. It’s also been great to see some of the staff attending our matches cheering the teams on!”

FAZAKERLEY HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS REMEMBER THE FALLEN Key Stage 3 pupils from Fazakerley High School have made poppies out of recycled plastic bottles and put them on display in the main school reception area.

The pupils have been learning about the Great War and wanted to commemorate the centennial of the 1918 Armistice.

Staff from the art department said that the history of this conflict and subsequent wars will still resonate within the city of Liverpool and many Merseyside families and the pupils were keen to reflect that in this creative act of remembrance.
