Popular sailing ships to reminisce
The album presenting the Åland sailing ship era will soon be completed, a unique and exceptional maritime time document worth collecting.

In a limited number of graphically attractive collector’s sheets, the ships featured in the Sailing ship stamp series are brought to life with facts and photos that offer you some insight into the dramatic tall ships’ era.
Provided by award-winning Åland Maritime Museum, the engaging texts and photos have been translated into English, German and Finnish. In 12 issues, you join us for a journey through an era that placed Åland and the Ålanders’ entrepreneurship and marine know-how on the navigation charts.
It started with the first Åland-built vessels during the era of peasant shipping in the 1800s and ended with magnificent wind jammers and the world’s largest fleet of sailing ships around the mid-1900s.
Subscribers receive their last set of collector’s sheets in February 2020; non-subscribers can still obtain this unique series. A stylish black album accompanies the sheets.

On 3 February, Allan Palmer wraps up the popular Sailing ship series with two stamps dedicated to the barquentine Mozart and the 4-masted barque Viking, both of which were among the last vessels to participate in the renowned Grain Race.

MOZART AND VIKING CONCLUDE SAILING SHIP SERIES
THE TALL SHIPS’ ERA came to an inevitable end after World War II, ousted by more efficient motor vessels. Schooner barque Mozart and 4-masted barque Viking represent the last tall ships owned by Åland top shipowners Hugo Lundqvist (18781936) and Gustaf Erikson (1872-1947).
BARQUENTINE MOZART was built in Scotland in 1904 for a German shipping company and was not really well suited for long voyages. Her type of rigging made her slow and difficult to handle. Until the onset of World War I, Mozart carried Chilean and Peruvian nitrate to Europe. The vessel went to France as war compensation and was sold to Lundqvist’s shipping company in 1922. Her last voyage to Australia in 1935 took 110 days and resulted in heavy weather damages to deck and rigging, so, a decision was made to scrap the ship.
The stamp shows Mozart homeward-bound in the English Channel with the white cliffs of Dover in the background.
4-MASTED BARQUE VIKING was built in Copenhagen in 1907 as a sail training ship for the Danish merchant fleet. Purchased by Gustaf Erikson in 1929, she made several voyages around the world before the war. In 1946, Viking set out on her last voyages, unloading her last cargo of wheat in London in 1948. Allan Palmer has illustrated the ship on her last and unusu ally long voyage from Australia, 139 days in severe weather. This particular voyage holds a special place for the artist; his father was third mate on the ship and his mother-to-be one of the passengers onboard. In 1951, the barque was sold to the city of Gothenburg where she still moors.

A new series of franking labels featuring wildflowers replaces the current series of woodpeckers on 3 February. The adorable bunch of flowers is painted by visual artist Carolina Sundelin.
FLORAL SPLENDOUR ILLUMINATES WINTER DARKNESS
WORKING AS an artist and visual arts teacher in Åland, Carolina Sundelin made her debut this year with four postal station ery cards on a crayfish party theme. The franking labels were an absorbing challenge, she confesses:
“The design was rather demanding, with limitations regarding motif, form and technique. I made a myriad of drafts before picking out the best ones to draw up with acrylic paint and contour markers.”
NATURE IS typically her foremost source of inspiration. She usually paints in oil on large canvasses, placing particular emphasis to colour and form but, above all,

she aims at expressing the force of nature.
THE WILDFLOWERS Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum odoratum), wild pansy (Viola tricolor), brown knapweed (Centaurea jacea) and marsh-marigold (Caltha palustris) are familiar to most people and can be found anywhere in Åland.
SOLOMON’S SEAL appears in early summer with white, vanilla scented tubular flowers with green tips. It grows around cairns, on wooded slopes and in swamps. Another characteristic flower in May-June is the marsh-marigold with its glossy dark green leaves and bright yellow flowers.

On 5 March, Åland Post pays tribute to Åland artist Henrik Nylund with a bold issue in the series of 2020 Sepac stamps featuring national art.
ART CHALLENGING YOUR SENSES

HENRIK NYLUND (1945-1982) lived to be only 36, but during his relatively short life and artistic career of barely 10 years, he made a lasting imprint in the Åland worlds of art and culture.
BORN ON FÖGLÖ , he remained loyal to this archipelago island throughout his life. Debuting as artist in 1971, he was entirely autodidact. At the same time, he took an active part in the local cultural and theatri cal life, and his strong societal engagement led him to the Åland Parliament for a period in the mid-1970s. He was also one of the founders of local newspaper Nya Åland in 1981 for which he contributed with unerring socio-political drawings.
AS A PRODUCTIVE and versatile artist, he created simple drawings as well as monumental paintings. One of his largest commissions was the decoration of car ferry
Viking Sally in 1979 for which he chose mo tifs from the Åland archipelago and boating.
HIS GREATEST sources of inspiration were nature and the archipelago, which he studied intensively and in detail. In drawings and paintings of stones, grass, birds and eggs, he alternated between the smallest and largest scales, working in ink as well as in oil and watercolour. Not entirely natural istic in his style, non-figurative and abstract painting suited him well as is illustrated in the 1976 triptych featured on the stamp.
THE SO-CALLED Sabina triptych was made from acrylic on panels and named after its time at Restaurant Sabina, previ ously located in Mariehamn. Today, the large painting in three panels is on display at the Parliament of Åland as an element of the collections of the Åland Art Museum.

Cute alert!
5 March sees the issue of four postal stationery cards celebrating our beloved pets. Photographer Susanna Hagman accepted the challenge to capture the pets in their element.
Dogs, cats, rabbits and birds are four of our most common pets, dogs and cats being the most popular. The four pets illustrated in the new postal stationery series will charm you; scientific studies show that pets improve our health and feeling of well-being.
With this playful series, you are introduced to Susanna Hagman, an Ålander currently living in Örebro, Sweden. Having worked as a full-time freelance photographer for four years, she loves taking photos of animals, particularly dogs. Animals are a challenging motif, she reveals:
“To get a good picture, I must create a setting of comfort and trust for the ani mal, with me as the photographer. A great amount of patience is required in addition to interpreting the animal’s language. The animal should enjoy the photo session as an easy task that pays well in the form of treats, experience and acclaim.”
Happy and content is what the Poodle Lemon, owned by the photographer, seems to be. Dachshund and Labrador retriever are the most common canine companions in Åland. Ghoast the cat is venturesome and

willful, but also a sociable and loyal friend. Among the purebred cats, ragdolls are a popular choice in Åland. And who can resist the adorable rabbit Sture, ideal as cuddling company and for playful activities. Bunny jumping is a popular hobby and Åland has a small but active bunny jumping association. The budgerigar is another lively animal to be kept in a cage and the commonest type of pet parrot. As a very social animal, it thrives with an interactive buddy to preen.
The first day cancel of this issue had not yet been determined at the time of printing. View this and other FD cancels on our homepage.
