STAMP PARTY SUCCESS!

Two hours filled with posi tive energi. This is how you can describe this year’s stamp event celebrating the issues My Åland and Postcrossing on 7 June.

Fervent collectors and postcard enthusiasts patiently lined up to buy the new issues, and many were pleased to obtain the autographs of stamp artists Lasse Holm and Cecilia Mattssons.

Many postcards were writ ten and some 2500 recipi ents around the world could enjoy receiving a special greeting from Åland.

A ’70s classic completes nostalgia car series

Your collection of model cars with a genu ine vintage feeling comes to an end at the turn of the year when we issue the fourth nostalgia car. Opel being the fourth most common brand of vintage car in Åland, a sporty yellow 1970-71 Opel Commodore GS/E finalizes the nostalgia car series.

Always worth collecting, the slick retrocars are produced for you who adore the golden age of cars. Elegant safe-keeping in specially designed boxes and a numbered certificate of authenticity are features that increase the value. Produced in scale 1:43, the unique number plate indicates the

order of the car in the nostalgia series. Prior to 1992, Åland cars had Finnish license plates starting with the letters ÅL. The plates of today have a blue frame and text on a white bottom. The plates also show the seal of Åland, the text ÅLAND and the Åland flag. The letters ÅL remain, followed by a combination of digits.

Don’t let this unusual and limited car series from Åland Post pass you by as the series reaches its completion with the issue of nostal gia car no. 4. The limited edition is 1300.

When Christmas knocks on your door, use this year’s Christmas seals to adorn your Christmas cards and presents. The seals spread joy, not only for the receivers of your cards but also among persons who benefit from your donation to char ity. The Cat Care Association and the Foodbank Association share this year’s proceeds.

CHRISTMAS SEALS SUPPORT PEOPLE AND ANIMALS

ESTABLISHED IN 2015, the nonprofit Cat Care Association helps homeless and feral cats in Åland to gain a better and healthier life. The long-term goal is to reduce and preferably eliminate the popula tion of stray cats which currently counts thousands. Changing a long-lived societal problem takes time and demands careful planning and considerable resources. The Christmas seal grant will help finance a castration project based upon the TNR program (trap-neuter-return), which involves the live-trapping of feral cats in cat colonies around Åland. The cats are ear-tipped, de sexed and dewormed before being released back into their territory. Over 500 homeless cats have been castrated since the start.

THE SECOND beneficiary is the Åland Foodbank Association, started in 2010 as a co-operation between the parish of Marie hamn, Save the Children - Åland, the Social

Mission, the Mission Covenant Church and the Pentecostal Church. The project was registered as an association in 2017.

THE FOODBANK gathers and redis tributes food and sanitary items to people in Åland, who are in current financial crisis and acts as a complement to the traditional aid instruments of society. The support is distributed once a week to families with children and every second week to other households. The Christmas seal grant will be used for the purchase of groceries.

THE WINTER SCENERY of the Christmas seals naturally completes the snow crystal designs of the 2019 Christmas stamps. Illustrated in watercolour is the Seafarer’s Chapel in Mariehamn’s eastern harbour, among other locations. Sold in sheets of 20 self-adhesive Christmas seals.

2019 SPECIAL CANCELLATIONS

NINE special cancellations were issued in 2019 to celebrate anniversaries and Åland events, among them the 100th anniversary of sports club IFK Mariehamn. 23 Novem ber sees the last 2019 special cancel that sums up three anniversaries celebrated by Save the Children Åland: Save the Children 100 years, Save the Children Åland Society 60 years and Convention on the Rights of the Child 30 years.

The annual pack holds the Post’s own covers with selected Åland stamps, each cancelled with a special cancel.

The sun shone on this year’s stamp event

The first day event for the My Åland and Postcrossing stamp issues on 7 June arranged in the Badhus Pavillion brought together merry stamp collectors and

postcard enthusiasts. For 2 hours, stamp artists Lasse Holm and Cecilia Mattsson diligently signed first day products, and the cancellation machines were hard at work cancelling all cards.

More than 100 guests from 14 different countries took part in this year’s Åland meet-up arranged by Finnish Postcrossing Friends Association.

Three different cancels were available on the day of issue. Heidi Eriksson makes sure the stamps are cancelled.

Amidst the writing of cards, visitors enjoyed some Åland ice cream.

Red Cross Christmas cards send us faith, hope and love Charity

Use the Christmas stamp ”Världen” (value €1.80) as postage on cards and letters up to 20 grams from Åland to any destination in the world. The Christmas stamp “Julpost” (value €0.90) may be used for your Christmas greetings up to 20 grams within Åland from 22 November to 13 December and to Sweden and Finland between 22 November and 11 December. Before and after these dates, standard postage rates apply, i.e. €1.40 within Åland. €1.60 to Finland and €1.70 to Sweden. Standard postage rates apply for mail to other countries.
