THE WALLER TERMINALS WERE DESIGNED IN RESPONSE TO THE REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR STUDENT-DESIGNED BULLET TRAIN PASSENGER STATIONS FROM TEXAS CENTRAL PARTNERS, LLC (“TEXAS CENTRAL”). THE TEXAS BULLET TRAIN PROJECT WILL PROVIDE RELIABLE, SAFE, AND PRODUCTIVE PASSENGER TRAIN TRANSPORTATION USING PROVEN HIGH-SPEED RAIL TECHNOLOGY BETWEEN HOUSTON AND NORTH TEXAS. THIS FACILITY WORKS AS A MIDWAY STATION, ALLOWING PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AMONG OTHER STAKEHOLDERS TO QUICKLY TRAVEL TO HOUSTON AND/OR DALLAS.

DESIGN IDEA
THE PROJECT WAS DESIGNED WITH SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES TO DIMINISH THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND MAXIMIZE THE USER COMFORT AND EXPERIENCE. THE TRANSPORTATION TERMINALS ARE TWO SYMMETRICAL BUILDINGS (TERMINALS) OF ABOUT 75,500 SQUARE FEET COMBINED, WHICH ALLOWS THE USERS TO ACCESS THE ELEVATED PLATFORM (35FT) AND HOP ON A TRAIN. THE TERMINALS CONSIST OF THREE LEVELS WITH DEDICATED SPACES FOR ADMINISTRATION, FOOD & RETAIL, AND LOUNGE WAITING AREAS.

THE PROJECT GOAL IS TO DELIVER AN INTERDISCIPLINARY STEAM PREPARATORY ACADEMY FROM 9TH - 12TH GRADE, TO BRIDGE OVER THE EDUCATIONAL DESERT THAT THE MINORITY COMMUNITY IS IDENTIFIED WITH. THE NEW FACILITY SHOULD BE ABLE TO REPRESENT THE METAPHOR OF BRIDGING THE EDUCATIONAL DIVIDE WITH IDEAS OF INNOVATION, CONNECTIVITY, AND EXPLORATION TOWARDS THE NEW FUTURE.

TO BRIDGE EDUCATION AND THE LACK OF RESOURCES IS THE EXPOSURE TO NEW PATHS AND OPPORTUNITIES. THE INTEGRATION AND ACTIVATION OF DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND CULTURES INTO ONE FOR A COMMON GOAL. THIS BRIDGE IS A JOURNEY SIMILAR TO A “RUBIK’S CUBE”; ONE MUST SHIFT AND MOVE IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS TO ACHIEVE ONE’S GOALS, YET THE PROCESS CAN BE CONFUSING WITH ITS DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES AND PATHWAYS TO TAKE. THE CONCEPTUAL BRIDGE OR JOURNEY IS EXPERIENCED ON THE MAIN CIRCULATION PATH OF THE FACILITY BY THE USER AS ONE IS BEING VISUALLY EXPOSED TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL SURROUNDINGS. THE CONNECTIVITY OF FORMS WAS DONE BY ADDING, SUBTRACTING, AND MERGING TECHNIQUES AND IS BEST REPRESENTED ON THE FACADES AND OVERALL MASSING OF THE FACILITY TO SYMBOLIZE THE UNIFIED DIVERSITY SUCH IN THE VARIOUS COLORS OF A “RUBIK CUBE”.

A LIBRARY IN THE INDEPENDENCE HEIGHT COMMUNITY OF HOUSTON, TX WAS DESIGNED. THE SITE IS NEARBY THE METRORAIL RED LINE STATION AS WELL AS THE NORTHLINE TRANSPORTATION CENTER, WHICH PROVIDES DAILY ROUTES TO RESIDENTS IN THE IMMEDIATE AND GREATER NEIGHBORHOODS OF HOUSTON. THE CHALLENGE OF DESIGNING NEW LIBRARIES IN THIS ERA IS TO INVITE PEOPLE TO USE THEM. A WAY TO INVITE AND UNITE THE COMMUNITY IS BY PROVIDING A SPACE TO CELEBRATE KNOWLEDGE AND INTERACTION.

THE CONCEPT INTENDED WAS TO INVITE USERS BY DESIGNING A SPACE THAT INCORPORATES THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, AND ALLOWS PEOPLE TO INTERACT AS A COMMUNITY. THE LIBRARY IS COMPRISED OF TWO LEVELS, MAINLY SEPARATED BY BOOK COLLECTIONS AND COMMUNITY SPACES, AN INTERIOR COURTYARD, AND A PARK WITH OUTDOOR SEATING AND GATHERING SPACES. THE UPPER LEVEL OVERHANGS, CREATING COVERED SPACE UNDERNEATH FOR USERS TO GATHER AND ENJOY THE VIEW TO THE CONSTRUCTED BODY OF WATER. IN SCARCITY OF GREEN SPACES ON SITE, A RETENTION POND AND PARK WAS INTEGRATED TO THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN.

TO THIS DAY MOST OF THE CRIME,POVERTY, AND UNDERSERVED POPULATION ARE CONCENTRATED IN THIS AREA. HOWEVER, SOME AREAS WITHIN THE SOUTHSIDE HAVE RECENTLY UNDERGONE SIGNIFICANT INFRASTRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS.
