May 27 – Bay Farm – Revisited
Meet at Godfrey Park, 281 Beach Road. This walk with examine the remodeled Godfrey Park Recreation Center, as well as the history of the Bay Farm uplands area. Dennis Evanosky will lead this walk. Note: Walk lasts 1 hour 15 minutes
June 24 – Old Town Alameda

Free Starlight Movies in the Park will continue this summer for all families to enjoy. The event starts at 6:30pm, with pre-show festivities including games and crafts for kids. Have you ever wondered what to do when your child or someone you know gets into a dangerous water situation? You won’t have to wonder any longer! This course will teach adults how to be safe in and around water without a lifeguard. Participants will learn how to rescue and begin basic life-saving measures, such as CPR and first aid before EMS arrives. Certifications in Basic Water Rescue and Adult/Pediatric First Aid will be awarded at the end of the course. Participants will need to be comfortable in chest-deep water. The aquatic intern program is designed for youth (12-15 years of age) who are interested in becoming lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors (WSI), but do not meet the minimum age requirements. This program will help to prepare participants to apply for and work as professional lifeguards and WSI once they do meet the age requirement. All participants will help to protect the lives and well-being of each person using the pool and to teach swim lessons at our facility. 15-year-olds will receive their lifeguard certs if they pass the test and complete the summer. Can’t decide what water sport is for you? Try them all. Water polo, Inner tube water polo, Inner Tube basketball, Diving, Noodle Football, and in water quidditch, plus many, many more. Must be deep water comfortable and pass a test on the first day of class.
Intro to Diving Jul 31 - Aug 3
Our popular summer camp is now a year-round class. This class offers a series of successful techniques that teach a progression of basic skills that promote body balance, spatial awareness, and improved water entry for diving, as well as emphasizing individual fundamental requirements and optional dives to all basic levels of divers. No diving experience is required, but you must be in deep water comfortably and pass a test on the first day of class.
Intro to Water Polo Jun 26 - Jun 30
No prior water polo experience is necessary, but participants must be comfortable in deep water. Fundamental water polo drills and swim development are the focus of every practice session. The primary purpose of this camp is to lay the beginning groundwork and skills needed to learn the sport and to introduce young athletes to the great game of water polo. Emphasis will be placed on: learning to eggbeater (tread water), catching and throwing the ball with one hand, passing techniques, swimming with the ball, head-up freestyle swimming, and beginning concepts of offense and defense.
Advanced Water Polo Jul 10 - Jul 13

This camp is for the athlete who aspires to play water polo at any level and focuses on developing middle school and high school-aged athletes, from beginners to experienced players. Athletes should be entering grades 6 to 12. Attendees will be divided based on age and experience level to ensure each individual can train and compete against the appropriate level of competition. Sessions will focus on the fundamentals of water polo and individual skill development and water polo drills, small team scrimmages, and game play to reinforce the learned skills and tactics. This is a perfect camp for boys and girls who are beginners as well as boys and girls aspiring to play in a competitive club or high school water polo team.

All campers must be able to show an LVL 4 Card, Swim competitively and Be able to tread water. A swim test will be given on the first day. The Cardboard Boat Regatta challenges youth boat builders – to design, build and navigate boats made entirely of cardboard and tape. The crafty cardboard creations sail (or sink!) in the pool. Boat builders will have three days to build and race boats on day 4. Students will get in the water and must wear lifejackets or take a swim test.

Thinking about joining a competitive swim team? Join our intro to swim team group this summer and see what it would be like – it is designed for swimmers who are ready to join a competitive swim team and want to refine skills and learn new skills necessary for competitive swimming. It is also for those who already have competitive swimming experience and are looking to improve and refine their strokes, turns, and starts with the help of experienced college swimmers. This level can be refined for each swimmer’s personal goals and needs. Swimmers must be able to show at least a level 4 card. The swim test will be given on the first day of class.

We’ll hike to Crab Cove to look for crabs and other sea life that lives at the Cove. Please bring a bag lunch to camp daily and water bottle. Names must be on all items brought to camp.

Our Trails End Day Camp is being combined with our Trailblazers Camp to create an awesome two-week camping experience for kids. Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland Hills provides the natural setting for the outdoor fun of hiking, camp skills, nature crafts, cooking, AND CAMPING UNDER THE STARS. Campers are bussed to and from camp daily, except for Tuesday PM, Wednesday, and Thursday AM (2nd week). The majority of the two-week session is considered a day camp program (8:30am - 4:30pm). The overnight will take place the evenings of August 1 & 2. Each camper will get their very own commemorative t-shirt to celebrate our 70th year of Day Camp! A week before your camp session, you will be sent a detailed letter with specific instructions on what to bring for the overnight experience, and daily drop-off and pick-up instructions.

WOW-X Care will be available before and after at Washington WOW, for Hidden Cove and Trails End Day Camps. Participant must be registered in Hidden Cove or Trails End Day Camp first, and then register for the corresponding WOW-X program.Preregistration is required for our Day Camp program.
The cost of WOW-X includes transportation to our Hidden Cove and Trails End Day Camps. Please drop off your child at Washington WOW at least 30 minutes before your Hidden Cove and Trails End Day Camp start time, to allow ample time to have campers transported to their respective camp site. At the end of your camp day, we will walk your child back to Washington WOW. Children need to be picked up by parents/guardians no later than 5:30pm at Washington WOW.

The World of Wonder (WOW) Program has been the favorite way for kids to spend their summer vacation, and for parents to be assured of the security of a supervised recreational care program. This program is open to those who are ages 5 to 11 years and completed Kindergarten through 4th grades. WOW will be held at various park sites across Alameda. All programs will spend the majority of the program day enjoying activities outdoors. Minimum enrollment is 8 participants; if minimum is not met, a site will be closed and registrants may join another program site, space permitting. Registration is available per week (no single days allowed). Full payment is required at time of registration. Please send your child with a packed lunch unless notified otherwise. Drop-off is between 8:00am (earliest) - 9:00am, and pick-up is between 4:30pm - 5:30pm (latest). All activities are geared toward a weekly theme. Activities include, but are not limited to the following: crafts, games, cooking, drama, nature, walking excursions and much, much more! Pre-registration is required for our WOW program. The 2023 Tween Summer Adventure Camp is almost here. Our week long sessions are fun, engaging, educational and recreational. Each week of this affordable and well-supervised program includes an AWESOME field trip, plus local walking excursions, hiking in regional parks, arts and crafts, sports, outdoor physical games, special events and much more! Your tween will make new friends, try new and exciting activities and leave with amazing memories. Registration is available per week (no single days allowed, 1 two-week session offered). Full payment is required at time of registration. Trips and trip times are subject to change. Please send your child with a packed lunch, unless notified otherwise.

Learn the basics of being a responsible babysitter and be certified through the American Red Cross. Class includes basic care of infants and toddlers from feeding to changing. Teens learn age-appropriate activities, first-aid awareness, how to prevent accidents, and how to handle emergencies. The Child/Infant CPR section will train the babysitter to act in emergency situations, to recognize and care for life threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in infants and children. Upon completion of the classes and satisfactory passing an exam, each participant will receive: 1) American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Card and 2) Child/Infant CPR card. The Summer Sports Intern program is designed for youth (14-15 years of age) who are interested in becoming sports coaches, umpires, scorekeepers, or who just really love sports but do not meet the minimum age requirements to work. This program will help prepare participants to apply for and work in the Sports Department once they meet the age requirement. All participants will help to coach, instruct and umpire the youth in our sports camps, and baseball program and learn CPR and First aid skills for the job. To uphold the highest sports program standards for our Sports Department, we will be limiting the number of Summer Intern participants to the applicants that have shown the highest level of commitment and dedication to the Intern program through a selection process.

Are you looking for an opportunity to give back to the Alameda community while learning valuable leadership & job skills and a strong work ethic?
Look no further! The Summer Teen Volunteer Program provides a learning opportunity for teens and tweens to work with K - 5 youth in ARPD WOW Programs while also earning community service hours.
Summer Teen Volunteers are responsible for assisting ARPD Program Leaders facilitate WOW program activities such as sports, games and enrichment activities. Volunteers help with program set-up, break down, clean-up, preparation and various other duties assigned by ARPD staff. Volunteer applicants are interviewed to determine program acceptance. Volunteers must attend the mandatory training (details below) and they are responsible for tracking and submitting their own timesheet to earn community service hours.
How to be Teen Volunteer! Closely follow these steps:
• Choose 1 Park Site to Volunteer, 1 park only:
• Franklin Park, Krusi Park, Washington Park, or Godfrey Park.
• Choose 1, 2 or 3 week-long sessions (1 week min., 3 week max)
• M - F, no program on Jun 19 and Jul 4.
• Choose 1 shift per week-long session
• Choose one 3-hour shift per week, AM or PM – NOT BOTH!
• AM Shift: 10:00am - 1:00pm, PM Shift: 2:00pm - 5:00pm
• Volunteers are not permitted to work more than their 3 hour shift. Community service is not approved for extra time, 45 hours max.

This exciting new program is for 9th - 12th graders who have previously participated in the ARPD Summer Teen Volunteer Program. The program aims to prepare Jr. Leaders to enter the workforce, and further hone their skills to effectively work with youth while having a fun & meaningful learning experience. Jr. Leaders will be assigned to work alongside staff in various ARPD youth programs, based on need. In addition to their daily shift, Jr. Leaders will participate in a weekly “staff” meeting with Recreation Supervisor and/ or Recreation Manager. Jr. Leaders will learn how to and be responsible for leading activities with youth.
Program prerequisites:
Incoming 9th – 12th grade. All applicants must have successfully completed at least one session of the ARPD Teen Summer Volunteer Program prior to summer 2023. Applicant pool is limited to the first 20 applicants who register online. All applicants are interviewed and 8 Jr. Leaders are selected for the program.
