2026 ULI Hines Urban Design Student Competition - National Finalist

The Greenlink transforms the historic Hancock shopping center marked by underdevelopment into a vibrant, inclusive neighborhood where diverse residents connect, where healthcare and housing exist in harmony, and where the highway’s wound becomes a place of renewal. Three miles north of downtown Austin, the development strategically connects a four-mile corridor rich with arts, culture, medical facilities, education, and community assets. With the help of cap and stitch infrastructure to restore east and west connections, this site demonstrates how cities can heal themselves one neighborhood at a time. As team lead during an intense two week competition, collaboration with four classmates brought together interdisciplinary design strengths and financial viability assessment to tackle this challenging opportunity.

On the ground floor, you’ll find a minor emergency medical clinic, a home nursing care center, and supporting medical laboratories. Above these facilities are 120 medical student apartments across multiple floors, aimed to fulfill the need for on-campus housing for students attending the new Dell Medical School, and providing them a live-work experience. Located in Austin, Texas, the masstimber design blends modular construction techniques with Passive House building envelope systems, Zero Net Energy BIPV power systems, Net-positive water systems, and low-embodied-use building materials. Leading a multidisciplinary team of 8 students led to a fourth place finish of over 100 competition entries, earning a visit and presentation at the U.S. Department of Energy HQ in Golden, Colorado.

The Sanneh Foundation’s renovation of athletic fields at Conway Recreation Center included fenced-in artificial turf sports field, field lighting and a removable dome on one of the soccer fields. Renovations began with interior building improvements including a new wood gym floor, new gym divider, repainting of walls, upgrading technology and renovating the kitchen and restrooms. With use of both public and private funding, the full project was completed in 2020.

Industrialization of the Built Environment

The RoKit assembly identifies strategies to pave the way for more sustainable low-income and homeless housing solutions using offsite and industrialized modular construction. The course Industrialization of the built environment focuses on the role that technology plays in providing affordable and high-quality housing for all communities. The class participated in the assembly of a donated RoKit-1 home, as well as building a 3D parametric model to study the process and benefits of offsite kit-of-parts construction, versus stick-built construction.

Emerging Technologies’ Study-Abroad (May 2024) | London, England

In partnership with London Buro Happold Engineering , this research highlights sustainability and circularity within retrofitting, using 65 Gresham Street as a case study. The project is set to redefine possibilities in repurposing existing buildings and setting the standard for low embodied carbon commercial office buildings. With adding five levels, the Buro Happold team assessed the embodied carbon value measured over the new total GIA (49,619m2), to compare the benefit between demolition and rebuild. The new structure gives an embodied carbon value of 145embCO2e, compared to an average new build, which would tend to have a value of 210embCO2e. Challenges and opportunities include MEP swap, structural support, strengthening and steel reuse consideration.
