MOTIVATION LETTER Dear IFMSA, And anyone reading this today, I typed and erased this first sentence probably a thousand times, wondering what to say or where to start. What do I tell them ? How can I, in just a couple hundred words, express everything ? It is truly difficult, but what you shall read over the next pages is not just cumulative of months of contemplation and drafting but years, more than 5 actually, of persistent effort that has led me to this point in my life. An incredible journey- filled with lows and highs, failures and successes, joy and sadness- that molded my vision and instilled in me the work ethic, skills and experience to confidently feel that I have something to contribute.

With this, it gives me great honour to present my candidature for the position of Liaison Officer for Medical Education Issues 2019/20. I am Alaa Dafallah, a 6th year medical student from Sudan, and you are about to live glimpses of my journey.

Back in 2013, a 2nd year medical student burnt-out with medical school discovered IFMSA. I remember attending the Local General Assembly and was inspired by students just like me who seem to be doing so much, better said, seem to have a purpose and contribution in society. “Please register your name next to the committee of interest to you”. With the logic of a 17 year old, I thought to myself, well if I am going to be doing anything extracurricular, it might as well be related to medicine so I chose the Standing Committee on Medical Education. Little did I know that this very random choice will end up being a passion, and that I was about to embark on a journey that will not only transform me as a person, but be my life mission.

Over the next years, graduating as an IFMSA Trainer to a Local Officer, Project Coordinator and then National Officer, I dived into the world of medical education. The more I understood it, the more I fell in love with what I do. Many times I get asked, “Why medical education, it’s so boring !” etc. I always casually reply that medical education is for stubborn intellectuals who have the vision, patience and commitment to see systems change.

But deep down, I think frustration was my fuel; dissatisfied with the educational system in my school, my country and later on as I discovered, my whole region, Africa. It was through IFMSA that I acknowledged my right to have a say in my education as a student, felt empowered to voice this and found a platform to empower other students as well.

I was always captivated by Nelson Mandela's quote, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. As a visionary, I see improving medical education as a sustainable approach to improving the health of populations; I mean think about it (strong, socially accountable education + better teaching strategies + better learning + good assessment + quality assurance = empowered competent future health workforce) = better health ?

Little did I know that this very random choice will end up being a passion and that I was about to embark on a journey that will not only transform me as a person, but be my life mission.

With that in mind, over the past 5 years I have worked as a local student representative, represented sudanese medical students at the National Consensus for Social Accountability in Sudanese Medical Schools; student representative on the accreditation board; carried out a nationwide study on educational strategies in sudanese medical schools; founded and worked closely with the Federal Ministry of Health on a project designed to reinforce health systems knowledge and universal health coverage in curricula of sudanese medical schools etc. This immense field experience contributed to my current understanding of medical education and skills in advocacy & professional conduct with externals.

But then came the tumble. “You have been selected as The SCOME Regional Assistant for Africa 2017/18. Your application showed immense experience but limited international exposure”. As much as I was happy, I was shook by this truth. When you come from a country with limited resources, nothing is a given and it's easy to be trapped in a cocoon limiting that to be your world. My first term as RA was every bit challenging. It felt like being introduced into a new fascinating world, or better said, landing on a new planet where you have to slowly learn to survive & thrive. I had to adapt to the new way of communication and formulate an understanding of this new context. Through more mistakes than successes, I made my way through the term, slowly getting better and eventually going for another term. Over the next 2 years, with 2 successful Regional Meeting sessions, 2 General Assemblies and attending 6 external meetings (4 of which are related to medical education), here I am today. Candidating to be IFMSA’s next LME. Not only because I believe I have accumulated substantial experience that has helped me shape a vision for advancing LME work (as you shall see in the plan of action) but because of my passion for medical education and my intent to contribute to this organization. What can be more satisfying than to give back by utilizing the same skills and experience I gained because of IFMSA, in service of IFMSA ?

Additionally, I take pride in the fact that I come from Africa, a region with immense potential. I want to bring the voice of our region closer to the leadership body of our organization, fulfilling the diversity IFMSA prides of. I aspire to be a walking-talking advocacy of how far we can come, and how much potential we have as a region.

As you may know, Sudan is going through difficult times during this period. I live in a world of uncertainty.

From a logical perspective, this itself is a drawback to my candidature. But amidst all this adversity and uncertainty, what I am most certain about is my determination to deliver and ability to overcome challenges which are, believe me, not new to me. Over the past years I watched myself grow into a resilient person, who has made it this far because she refuses to let circumstances define/limit her.

I can't end without being utterly thankful to everyone who contributed in one way or another, positively or negatively to my journey and to the Queen, Katerina Dima for being my inspiration. Without further ado, I shall leave you to (hopefully enjoy) reading the rest of my candidature !

→ What is not maintained is lost ! The past 2 terms have witnessed incredible advancements

in the LME work, and I aspire to ensure sustainability starting with a thorough handover, regular reporting and documenting of work in the LME Journal. Additionally, the plan of action has been set based on IFMSA Strategy and SCOME Strategy 2018-21 ensuring progress in the right direction.

Visibility

→ Although much of the LME work is not apparent, I plan to ensure greater visibility to members,

NMOs and international teams through regular reporting, update of LME Meetings Spreadsheet etc. as well as externals through physical reports in meetings and quarterly updates on mailing systems etc.

Integrity

→ Integrity lies at the core of my values. If elected, I shall hold myself accountable to all my tasks,

demonstrating a high level of commitment and consistency in my work.

Professionalism

→ I commit to reflect transparency, respect and ethical conduct required of an IFMSA TO

in all professional interactions within or outside IFMSA. In addition, I shall maintain a high level of responsiveness with externals (within 24hr time-frames).

Resilience

→ IFMSA is all about learning and growth. By demonstrating resilience, I will overcome

challenges that might transpire and always meet the expected level of performance.

1. Advance External Representation and IFMSA Visibility 1. Strong and professional representation of IFMSA in external meetings and on panels/committees/consultations etc.

Ensure proficient and broad representation of IFMSA in main external meetings of the term; WFME Executive council meetings, AMEE & AMEE ExCo Meetings, UNESCO World Bioethics Conference, Open Con, Ottawa- ICME 2020, TUFH 2020 etc. according to pre-set objectives, networking strategies etc. Check the External Meetings tab for more detail. (here) AMEE & AMEE STF- ensure the widest representation of IFMSA at AMEE through a diverse array of abstracts and presentations; collaborate with EMSA to ensure the selection of a competent student taskforce with smooth preparations and co-ordination during AMEE. Continue to represent IFMSA professionally on panels, mainly among others, ASPIRE Social Accountability Panel.

2. Maintaining existing partnerships, navigating new ones At the beginning of the term I plan to review all current MoU’s and ToR’s to assess whether they are being respected, and which need renewal. I also plan to scale up existing partnerships and navigate new ones. Check (here) the external partners sheet for more detail a. WFME The World Federation for Medical Education is one of our main partners. Throughout the upcoming term, I plan to; Fulfill tasks of the LME as part of the WFME executive council, which include but are not limited to attendance of ExCo meetings and reporting.

Manage and co-ordinate the IFMSA-WFME Internship Program (calls, selection, projects, reporting etc.)

Representation of WFME in IFMSA General Assemblies as well as Regional Meetings whenever possible.

Strengthen regional connection with regional associations through identifying regional projects and involvement in IFMSA Regional Meetings/WFME Regional Association Meetings.

New projects- Following up on the WFME2019 World Conference where Accreditation and Quality Assurance was thoroughly discussed, particularly student involvement by navigating the possibility of an IFMSA-WFME collaboration on development of guidelines for student engagement in accreditation +/reflection of the different models that were used by accredited agencies around the world. b. AMEE Association of Medical Education in Europe is also one of our main partners, particularly with regards to the AMEE STF; Fulfill tasks of the LME as part of the AMEE executive council, which include but are not limited to attendance of ExCo meetings and reporting.

Manage and co-ordinate (together with EMSA) the AMEE Student taskforce, ensuring diversity and excellence. Manage the AMEE Students Likepage and keep sharing positive experiences from the STF on the page.

Ensure strong presence of IFMSA at AMEE 2020 through a wide array of presentations and strong advocacy stances on theme-related discussions (more when the provisional program is out).

Continue to represent IFMSA professionally on the AMEE Aspire Social Accountability Panel.

Greater engagement of IFMSA and members in AMEE activities/opportunities - AMEE Student Grants, AMEE MedEd Newsletter, AMEE Medical Teacher Reviewers etc.

Advocate for capacity building opportunities eg: free/reduced spots for students in AMEE workshops/courses.

1. Advance External Representation and IFMSA Visibility 3. Stepping up communication Share at the beginning of the term an IFMSA Events Calendar Sheet with externals that includes the dates and themes of the main IFMSA events (General Assemblies and Regional Meetings) allowing opportunity for externals to express interest early on. Note that it shall be regularly updated during the term, and will not substitute the official invitation of externals to RM's/GA's at least 90 days prior to the meeting dates.

Provide quarterly updates on IFMSA work in Medical Education to all externals through the mailing system. This may encourage greater involvement of externals in our work (through collaborations on projects that might be of interest them) and professionally reflect the broad impact we have as IFMSA. Within IFMSA- input collection prior to meetings where relevant, social media presence during external meetings and blog posts/outcome reporting post meetings.

4. Increase IFMSA visibility in literature Publish articles on the internal work done by IFMSA with regards to medical education eg: PH in medical curriculum, SA Toolkit, Discrimination in Medical Education etc.. Aside from the benefits of sharing evidence, increasing IFMSA visibility in literature fosters greater international recognition, broader networking and strengthens our advocacy attempts.

5. Broaden ER within IFMSA Greater regional involvement in ME ER is one of my main focuses for this term.

Strengthening through the ER assistants and Regional Directors the relationships with WFME Regional Associations including but not limited to attendance of Regional WFME meetings and invitation of externals to regional meetings.

Supporting the development of ME related regional priorities with the RDs thereby effectively promoting context related advocacy.

Mapping of the main ME stakeholders in the region at the beginning of the term in collaboration with the ER assistants and navigating opportunities for joint projects/work.

2. Address the Global Priorities IFMSA Global Priorities guide our advocacy hence they shall be at the center of my work during term.

Actions stated below are tentative and will be slightly adapted to align with the external goals for the GPs after their adoption as well as consultations with relevant TOs. 1. Global Priorities 2019/20

→ Global Health Workforce

GHW is a very important area that is gaining considerable global attention. In the upcoming term, I plan to; 1. Continue representation of IFMSA and youth on the WHO GHWN Strategic Advisory Committee; GHWN Education Hub (working on the finalization of the Global competency framework for universal health coverage among other tasks) as well as the GHWN Youth Hub, efficiently leading and creatively contributing to the work of the Youth Hub. 2. Advance collaborations with ILO in regards to HW challenges (building up on discussions with the previous LME at the WHA) on possible projects that address the gap between health-workforce education and planning.

3. Hold at least one PreGA/RM workshop on youth advocacy & global health workforce delivered in collaboration with relevant externals (WHO, ILO) 4. Continue advocating for education (through social accountability, transformative learning experiences and strong accreditation & quality assurance systems) as an essential strategy in addressing of global health workforce imbalances during all relevant meetings such as the WHA, WHO RC’s etc.

→ Access to research and research education

Much progress was achieved this term with regards to ARRE. I plan to build up on the work done during this term through; 1. Working on the review and endorsement of the Basic research competencies framework, involving relevant externals 2. Reflection of ARRE survey findings on relevant external meetings as substantial evidence supporting our policy document.

3. Continue our collaboration with SPARC in the organisation and attendance of Open Con as well as IFMSA participation in open access week, OA 2020 movement.

4. Strengthen regional relations with SPARC Regional associations/Open Access regional movements.

2. Address the Global Priorities 2. Overarching concepts

→ Global Health Education (*Specifics related to IFMSA exchanges shall be addressed separately) IFMSA is one of the main proponents for GHE. I plan to continue advocacy efforts through;

Launch of GHE worldwide project (working in collaboration with SCOME & SCOPE-D as well as relevant externals) aiming to analyse the extent of GH in curricula in medical schools around the world. Results will be shared with relevant externals and presented in external meetings strengthening our advocacy through evidence.

Developing and publishing a report that reflects IFMSA’s exchange system and the worldwide impact over the years in advancing GHE. The main objective is to showcase the immense work done currently, and the impact over a defined time period from IFMSA establishment in 1951 (almost 70years of contribution) gaining international attention, increasing endorsing organizations and possibly funding ?

→ Social Accountability

Social accountability is one of the important pillars of our work ! After winning the Charles Boelen Award on Social Accountability in 2017, IFMSA has and will continue to lead efforts in advocacy for SA through; Maintaining representation in all the important SA meetings and partners, namely THENet and The Network Continuing the SA implementation SWG with the goal to assess the use of the SA toolkit, update the toolkit, promote it further and continue translation to different languages.

Follow up on the Pilot SA Online course in collaboration with GOSA AMEEMR and consider the possibility of having subsequent versions for the course.

Review the IFMSA SA Action plan and ensure that it is being implemented.

Collaborate with SNO to hold a pre-conference program on student advocacy in SA or a conference workshop at TUFH2020.

Strengthen collaborations with WONCA (in collaboration with LPH) especially at a regional level with regards to social accountability as a measure to foster HW retention and promote Primary Healthcare.

3. Strengthen Advocacy a. IFMSA Policy documents IFMSA Policy documents represent the official organisation's stance and hence form the base of all advocacy efforts in external meetings. Although there shall be an anticipated structure change to include a separate IFMSA Policy officer, I plan to continue ensuring the maintenance of existing policies, and lead/support the development of new ME-related policies; Assess and improve usage of current policy documents through NMO reports and capacity building respectively.

Propose new policies in unexplored areas within ME; I. Meaningful student engagement in medical education - This policy document will be of much benefit for NMOs supporting local and national advocacy.

II. Interprofessional practice and education b. Reflecting Internal work Medical education forms the foundation of IFMSA’s work. Often, standing committees/program coordinators/NMO reports have relevant ME related initiatives/projects/data that are worth reflecting eg:

*New Areas are merely ideas, that will need to be discussed with respective Directors and International teams !

c. Bottom-Top Approach Advocacy is strongest at a local level, hence in an attempt to encourage local and national advocacy, I plan to support NMOs wishing to develop national medical education policies, as well as ensuring capacity building of members on policy making and advocacy through GA sessions, RMs, online webinars etc..

4. Enhance Recognition of IFMSA Exchanges A bulk of LME’s work is directed towards exchanges and seeking recognition. In the upcoming term I plan to work closely with SCOPE and SCORE Directors + External Development Assistants to; Analyse the current externals database and endorsement status, understand where we are at the moment and map the the upcoming term’s priority departments.

Continue to approach associations and academic societies in an attempt to gain recognition/endorsement of exchanges as well as input in the development of department specific handbooks.

Support NMOs in attaining recognition for their exchange programs through capacity building eg: webinars, sessions during RMs and GAs etc.

Support SCORE IT particularly with SCORE Research Camp- gaining endorsement for the event, inviting externals and exploring opportunities for funding.

5. Explore Opportunities What is interesting about liaison work is that you live in a world of limitless possibilities ! Throughout the term, attendance of external meetings, discussions with externals etc. opportunities beneficial to IFMSA and our members may and will unexpectedly arise ! I plan to stay observant to all new opportunities that align with our priorities but even more, maintain the existing opportunities IFMSA has; Internships - Sustain the current WFME internship program, ensuring selection of excellent interns and reporting + follow up after their period; Explore new internships with regional associations or other partners.

Taskforces - Consider the establishment of taskforces/delegations to important medical education meetings of the term eg: Ottawa 2020 and work on reinstating the student taskforce to UNESCO World Bioethics Conference.

Online courses - SA online course; consider launching consecutive, improved versions of the course, incorporating feedback from the pilot version currently ongoing; keep working on NEST Online Course with Scholar Rx and devise a follow up strategy for the course participants; explore new opportunities for online capacity building courses.

MedEd Calendar/Opportunities - Update and restructure the existing MedEd Calender to include regional tabs, and other ME related opportunities, readings etc..

Grants - Follow up on ScholarRx grant and assess the possibility of sustainable funding; co-ordinate AMEE Student grants; look for new grant opportunities in collaboration with the VPE and VPF. Awards- Together with the LO team, stay on the look-out for awards in relation to youth advocacy, education etc. that IFMSA is eligible for.

6. Support Teams and NMOs Working in teams and engaging with members is one of the many merits of IFMSA as it exposes you constantly to incredible people who end up being family ! I commit to be constantly available and approachable during the term, supporting whenever needed and regularly incorporating feedback in order to improve my work !

Availability Status- Currently we are on academic hold which means I am fully available for IFMSA. Once we resume studies, I will have 3 months left to graduate after which I shall also have 100% availability for IFMSA.

a. SCOME International Team After 2 years of working in the SCOME IT, I am aware of the role the LME plays in supporting IT. I plan to not only fulfill that role, but step it up as well through; Greater involvement of the IT in LME work through - Regular reporting (meetings/monthly reports/LME Meetings sheet), [FYI][EM] xxxx Thread (For your Information - External Meeting) where input prior to important to an external meeting and post meeting outcomes/reflections will be shared whenever relevant/feasible etc.

Support through input and insight on main IT projects, session preparation and delivery at general assemblies and regional meetings etc.

Together with the SCOME-D work to ensure smooth leadership as well as mentorship, personal development and mental health support of IT members throughout the term.

Greater involvement of externals in IT work eg: invitation to relevant webinars, quarterly updates on IFMSA ME related work/projects, invitation of externals to Regional Meetings and General assemblies etc..

Availability and attendance of IT meetings, discussions, webinars etc. b. SCOPE & SCORE International Teams I find myself quite excited/looking forward to working with these ITs (if elected) not only because it will be new ground, but because I am quite sure that there is much we can do together. As above, I plan to support both ITs, share important/relevant external meeting updates and involve relevant externals in the exchanges work !

6. Support Teams and NMOs c. Team of Officials Aside from LME work, being a TO entails having a different set of responsibilities and work. I look forward to playing a positive role in the TO through; Attendance of most TOMs, engaging in discussions, offering critical input, being openly receptive to feedback and representing not only my committee (SCOME) but my region as well.

Liaison Officers Team: Work with the LOs + VPE I. Generally in improving external representation of IFMSA, updating the ER guide, input on all ME relevant statements etc.

II. Inter-sectional topics; that include but are not limited to, Interprofessional Education, Public Health in Medical curriculum, Global health workforce with the LOSO, LPH and LWHO respectively.

III. Reporting on the Global Priorities 2019/20 and giving input for Global Priorities 2020/21 SCOME/PE/RE Directors: As usual, support IT work and communicate regularly to reflect on how better the the LME can support work.

Regional Directors: Work closely with RD's on establishing medical education related regional priorities, supporting their communication with medical education organizations/externals in their region and sending invitations for Regional Meetings etc. d. National Member Organizations All our work is in service of IFMSA, its members and NMOs. Throughout my term, I aspire to ensure that NMO needs are at the forefront of my annual working plan and that the voice of our members is at the core of our contributions/speeches/statements in external meetings through; Widening input through calls for input prior to external meetings whenever relevant/feasible.

Regularly updating NMOs on LME work through the LME Meetings/Updates Sheet that shall be shared on mailing systems and social media.

Convey ME-related opportunities that are beneficial to members (through our MedEd calender and social media).

Support National Officers and Local officers in the development of policy documents, capacity building of members with regard to external representation and ME etc.

Be openly available and approachable during IFMSA meetings and online, fulfilling one of the “hidden” roles of IFMSA TOs- empowerment.
