Op TypOSAFARI IN CAMBRIDGE Werkweek GO3 januari 2014

‘Cambridge is een stad waar ‘in het wild’ heel wat fraaie en of interessante typografie te zien is. Bekende typografische ontwerpers als Eric Gill en David Kindersley lieten er hun sporen na. Je zult deze sporen ongetwijfeld aantreffen wanneer je in de stad op ‘typosafari’ gaat en goed om je heen kijkt.’

it vormde het begin van de opdracht waarmee de 41 derdejaars studenten Grafisch Ontwerpen in januari hun werkweek ingingen.

Maar wat is een typosafari?

In groepen, samengesteld met studenten uit zowel Breda als Den Bosch, zijn de studenten de straat op gegaan om de typografie vast te leggen die ze op straat tegenkwamen.

Fotograferen, filmen, schetsen, het zogenaamde rubben (zeer populair in Engeland) en zo goed mogelijk determineren wat er te zien was: Wanneer is het gemaakt? Door wie? Wat voor soort letters zijn er gebruikt?

Hun missie: de liefde voor typografie visualiseren die in Cambridge aanwezig is in gevelbeletteringen, beletteringen op monumenten en straatnaamborden en te laten zien hoe typografie een stad kan verrijken. Om uiteindelijk te komen tot een ontwerp voor een mini-typografiemuseum of typografiemonument ergens in de openbare ruimte van Cambridge.

Gewapend met een wandelroute samengesteld door typografiefanaat Will Hill, tevens onze gastheer aan de AngliaRuskin University (van beroep: typograaf, publicist, illustrator, auteur van het boek ‘The Complete Typographer’ en docent typografie aan de Anglia-Ruskin University) gingen onze studenten op pad.

Ook de thuisblijvers, een paar studenten die helaas niet mee konden naar Engeland, zaten niet stil. Zij kregen een aangepaste opdracht aangezien typografie in Nederland een iets andere rol heeft in de samenleving en stadgezicht. Zij hadden juist de missie om de Nederlandse typograaf en de typografie meer bekendheid te geven doormiddel van een

ontwerp voor een mini- museum of mini-monument te maken in de openbare ruimte.

De stad werd doorgeploeterd en verkend, er werd vastgelegd, overlegd, gebrainstormd, geschetst en ontworpen. Op woensdag was er een klein uitstapje naar Londen om de studenten ook nog de bredere context van de Engelse cultuur te laten verkennen. Bovendien ging er nog een kleine groep studenten (omdat er niet meer plaats was) in Cambridge langs bij de Cardozo Kindersley Workshop; opgericht door wijlen David Kindersley en momenteel gerund door zijn weduwe Lida Lopes Cardozo. Een uitgebreide uitleg over alles met betrekking tot het letterhakken wat zij daar tot in de puntjes in de vingers hebben, om uiteindelijk allemaal het letterhakken zelf eens uit te proberen. Tot grote hilariteit van de studenten werden ook de docenten (zelfs ondergetekende als theoriedocent!) uitgenodigd om het letterhakken te proberen.

Na vele kilometers typosafari, duizenden foto’s, krakende hersens, eindeloze schetsen, heel veel rubbing en verschillende in steen gehakte schreefjes, presenteerden de studenten vrijdagochtend hun projecten. Hele praktische, direct uit te voeren tentoonstellingen en herdenkingsplekken; maar ook meer utopische visies op het overbrengen van de liefde voor typografie. Van een ode aan de wijdverspreide Cambridge instructiebordjes in de vorm van een do-it-yourself Cambridge typografie-kit; een monument bestaande uit rubbings van typische Cambridge typografie; een Google Maps plug in voor high definition beelden van straatnaamborden; en vanuit Nederland het voorstel voor de Typografiets!

Hoewel niet iedere student natuurlijk een even grote voorliefde heeft voor typografie, bleek aan het einde van de week dat elke student typografisch Cambridge in ieder geval wel in zijn of haar hart te hebben geslote. Ons bezoek werd er een om nooit meer te vergeten, met dank aan de enthousiaste inzet van de studenten, de gastvrijheid van Anglia Ruskin, het inspirerende bezoek aan Lida Lopes Cardozo en onze betrokken en gezellige buschauffeur Alex Eversen!

APPLICATION We made an application to create recognition about the typical Cambridge typography. In this application you follow five steps, where you choose from elements that are characteristic for typography in Cambridge. When you are finished you can send your perfect, awesome and sexy typography to your email address. You can print your design or use it online.

During our typographic research in Cambridge we stumbled upon an even more interesting phenomenon; the British politeness. We could constantly hear somebody say either “Excuse me?”, “I’m sorry.” or “Thank you!”, even when there was no reason to do so. We couldn’t only hear this politeness, but could also see it. Of course we knew that this was present throughout the whole country, but we concluded that the citizens of Cambridge were amongst the politest people in Great-Britain. The other thing that was striking was the rich historical typography that was present in this city – the reason we actually came here –.

What was a pity, was the fact that the visible politeness – we could not only hear the politeness but also see it – didn’t suit the mentality of the citizens and the city of Cambridge.

The excuses, sorry’s and thank you’s were present on signs, in shop windows and on terrible looking white A4-prints. We thought this was very paradoxal because the - in a lot of cases - horrible typography doesn’t look polite at all. In most of the cases it was even set in uppercase, which made it compulsory instead of a favour. Sometimes all this politeness made us feel rude, while we didn’t actually do anything wrong.

We thought that we should show the beauty politeness could have, which is not present at this moment. We wanted to create awareness amongst the British and non-British about their politeness. Our monument strives to be both a homage and a creator of consciousness.

Our monument exists of stone walls with inscriptions of the polite signs. The placing of these walls are based on the map of Cambridge.

This results in a maze-like structure with a lot of corners and narrow streets. Walking through the maze therefore also feels a little like walking through Cambridge. Next to the polite inscriptions, the street signs are also present in the inscriptions, which ensures a direct link to Cambridge and the typographic heritage. Because of the narrow streets people will have difficulties passing each other, which will lead to even more polite excuses, thank you’s and sorry’s.

Our monument is located on the small square at the backside of the Holy Trinity Church in the middle of the old town. Furthermore this location will emphasise the contrast between the old church and the modern shops.

There is a lot of typography to see in Cambridge. The typical Cambridge typography is becoming less visible because of the advertising signs. We want to create more awareness for the typical Cambridge typography. There will be a tour through the city with 26 different spots, each spot with it’s own

letter (A - Z). The letters will be physical objects with information about the typography.You can also walk the tour with an app. If you pass a spot that is on the tour, you will get a notification.You can also see more information about the typography you’re looking at.

De straten van Cambridge zijn gevuld met de prachtigste typografie. De meeste mensen lopen er echter voorbij zonder er enige aandacht aan te besteden. Dat is jammer, want het gaat hier om een oude typografische traditie zoals je die eigenlijk nergens anders ziet. Dit erfgoed van Cambridge zou meer onder de aandacht gebracht moeten worden, maar dan wel op een manier die past bij deze tijd. Daarom hebben wij de interactieve typografietour bedacht.

Centraal gelegen in de stad komt het star tpunt van de route. Deze wordt gemarkeerd door een groot scherm. Op dit scherm wordt je gevraagd de app te downloaden. Wanneer je met je smar tphone of tablet inlogt in de app, wordt je welkom geheten op het scherm. Daarnaast komen er op het scherm foto’s voorbij die mensen hebben gemaakt van punten op de route en andere interessante typografische schatten in de stad.

APPLICATION Wanneer je bent ingelogd in de app kan de typografietour beginnen. De app wijst je de weg en weet waar je bent aan de hand van gps-gegevens.

Wanneer je bij een belangrijk punt op de route komt, krijg je daar automatisch informatie over. Zie je andere interessante typografie die niet in de tour is opgenomen? In de app zit de mogelijkheid om foto’s te maken die vervolgens op het centrale scherm geprojecteerd worden. Zo kan iedereen meehelpen de tour uit te breiden en te verrijken.

Al lopende door Cambridge werd ons bevestigd dat de diversiteit aan typografie erg groot is. Om wat gerichter aan het werk te kunnen gaan hebben we besloten om ons aan een thema te houden. Met het thema opliggende en diepliggende letters zijn wij op pad gegaan in de stad.

Omdat Cambridge verschillende rondleidingen door de stad aanbiedt, wilden wij een nieuw bezienswaardigheid aan de ‘must-sees’ toevoegen: de Typography Checkpoint. Dit monument zal een verzameling worden van de diepliggende en opliggende letters die te vinden zijn in het historisch centrum van Cambridge.

Een monument met een stukje typografische historie.

Het monument zal geplaatst worden in Parker’s Piece, een groot park vlak bij het centrum van Cambridge. We hebben voor deze locatie gekozen, omdat hier ook een belangrijk object staat: de Reality Checkpoint.

De Reality Checkpoint is een lantaarnpaal in het midden van het park en duidt de grens aan tussen de centrale universiteitswijk van Cambridge (Reality Bubble) en de ‘echte wereld’ van niet-academische locals.

Het monument laat alles zien wat er op typografisch vlak is gebeurd en fungeert als rubbing-hotspot waarop alle typografische hoogtepunten van de stad verzameld zijn.

Het kan dus gezien worden als een typografische realiteitscheck.

Hoe zal Typography Checkpoint eruit komen te zien? Op de foto’s is een impressie te zien van Typography Checkpoint.

We hebben gekozen om het woord Cambridge te plaatsen in het park. De letters zullen van laag naar hoog oplopen, om zo de visie naar de toekomst naar voren te brengen. Op de letters zullen alle opliggende en diepliggende naamborden, gevels en andere uitingen geplaatst worden. Om het geheel in balans te houden, zullen de opliggende letters op de lage delen geplaatst worden en de diepliggende letters op de hoge delen van Typogaphy Checkpoint. Door de verschillende hoogtes en dieptes van de letters wordt het een monument om aan te raken en te voelen.

Cambridge heeft een lange geschiedenis wanneer het gaat om typografie. Dit mag niet zomaar vergeten worden of ongezien blijven. Door Typography Checkpoint zullen voorbijgangers er even herinnerd worden aan de typografische historie van de stad.

ONDERZOEK Na de wandeling door Cambridge van dinsdag 14 januari zijn we tot de volgende conclusies gekomen over de typografie van Cambridge: Het viel ons op dat de typografie op de huizen en straten erg ambachtelijk was. Er is veel rekening gehouden met de omgeving. De typografie vormt een geheel met de architectuur, waardoor het door de eenvoud en klasse juist opvalt. De moderne typografie is ondanks dat het vaak schreefloos is, vormt het wel een geheel met de oude typografie. Je ziet dat er veel respect is voor de oude typografie.

Het is te zien hoeveel aandacht er wordt gegeven aan de typografie in Cambridge.

HET MONUMENT Donderdag 16 januari hebben we besloten om een monument te ontwerpen. Als eerbetoon voor de stad Cambridge. De plek die we daarvoor hebben uitgekozen is de rand van de stad ‘West road’. Het staat symbool als de entree van de stad. De poort wordt één met de omgeving en de stad. Wat ook een verwijzing is naar de typografie. Met een mooie spreuk:

‘Reading the voice of Cambridge’.

Hiermee willen we de komende bezoekers van Cambridge bewust maken van de typografie op een poëtische wijze.

We hebben David Kindersley en Eric Gill gekozen omdat zij een grote invloed hebben gehad op Cambridge, Eric heeft de font Gill Sans en Perpetua ontworpen. David Kindersley heeft de Octavian ontworpen. Daarnaast is David de leerling geweest van Eric en daarom hebben we hebben we Eric boven David geplaatst op de poort. De fonts van Gill en Kindersley zijn nog steeds te zien in heel Cambridge.

MONUMENT CAMBRID

Zoals duidelijk moge zijn, bezit Cambridge een rijke geschiedenis van typografen.

Een eerbetoon aan deze 20e eeuwse ontwerpers is daarbij zeker op zijn plaats.

Het is heel duidelijk te zien hoe de stad, net als elke andere, is overspoeld door moderne reclame uitingen. Het gevaar dreigt dat deze uiteindelijk de traditie zal doen verdwijnen. Met dit project willen wij een grotere belangstelling losmaken bij de bezoekers en bewoners van Cambridge. Er bestaat nu nog een afstand tussen de klassieke typografie en de kennis ervan. In dit project richten wij ons op de kunst van het letters snijden in steen. Het monument is een eerbetoon aan de belangrijkste

We started our typographic safari through Cambridge by following the route provided by Will Hill.

On this route we stumbled across some weird typographic contradictories. This is the starting point of our research and we picked the theme: contradictory At first sight the city looks very well organised and everything seems to be in harmony. But when you start using your eagle eye you will notice small differences throughout the journey. The pictures here are showing some of the contradictories that Cambridge have, and what we experienced. Perhaps they try to much to have it clean and neat, but what really happens is that the old typography gets lost or that in the example on the left the readabilty gets blocked by a rainpipe.

« During the tour we saw these very nice designed garbage bags, from there we started to sketch out some ideas. At first we thought to make a monument with that idea in the back of our minds.

But not much later we decided not to do it. So on to the next idea.

» The next idea was to design a 3D model from the letters C and B. The C would stand for the capital letter from Cambridge but aswell for correct. The b would be from bridge and from bad. The purpose was to select our good and bad photo's to eventually collage them on to the letters. It started to look at something but then there it was.

Stefan went to the David Kindersly workshop and learned more about the ingraving of stones. With his experience and our new idea we came to the concept op finding a large field of grass to place our monument. The idea was to take different kind of plants, that have different kind of ages. We wanted to write a word with the plants and they would disappear one by one.

Still we had that feeling that we didnt digged deep enough , and this could cause some problems. The journey continues...

« We wanted to promote our monument to make more use the idea of contradictory. One poster would instruct you to go to the park, while the other poster would say not to listen to that poster with the instruction. Eventually we decided not to use this but its a step in the proces.

« The place is known, the text is clear. We got ourselves a monument. After a long process we finally came to the point to devellop our idea.

TYPOGRAfiets Een ode aan Nederlands typografen

TYPOGRAfiets Nederland is rijk aan goede typografen. Het probleem is dat deze niet opgemerkt worden. Dit gaan wij veranderen. Zodat ze de waardering krijgen die ze verdienen.

Nederland staat bekend om zijn fietsen. Met dit uitgangspunt brengen wij een eerbetoon aan zes toonaangevende Nederlandse typografen. Omdat wij denkendat een bewegend object meer aandacht zal trekken dan een statisch object. Iedere fiets is gebaseerd op de typografische stijl van de ontwerper met een een eigen kleuraccent. De ontwerpers die wij in de spotlight zetten zijn Jan van Krimpen, Sjoerd van Roos, Wim Crouwel, Gerard Unger, Martin Majoor en Lucas de Groot

DEfiets Wij leggen ons niet vast aan een bepaalde locatie, maar gebruiken de Nederlandse fietspaden als canvas.

Stuurlint Het stuur wordt gedecoreerd met een stuurlint met het alfabet van het font waar de fiets op gebaseerd is.

projectielamp Om in het donker de aandacht te krijgen hebben we een speciale lamp bevestigd waarbij op het wegdek een afbeelding geprojecteerd wordt. Hierdoor onstaat een rijdende expositie van de ontwerper.
