Mixed Typology is Introduced along with Residential and commercial.

The site consists of 8 major open spaces which sum for the built up in different spaces . The main spine connects the arterial and the subarterial streets in a way that makes people inclusive with the built environment in the street.

FSI set radially to increase height variance and visual connection from outer range towards the centre.

Presence of shared sidewalk and MUZs allow larger range of activities.

Tessellation is defined as an arrangement of polygons in a repeated pattern .The tessellation concept is based upon the shaping derived from the angles and slopes created from the crowding data and the physical dimensions of the existing site. This definition exists in the urban fabric too with the need to be identified and worked upon.

The LOS being large creates a buffer between the street and the user load generated by the built to the street.

The walls and barriers in the site are the character of kamala mills today. It’s deprivation of connectivity and nature of inaccessibility could be related to the heavy dominance of private ownership. The high end development has led to social segregation amongst people as it caters to a specific strata of society. The site lacks green open spaces and public spaces.

The vision for the site is therefore to break the notion of exclusivity which over the years has shaped the city of Mumbai. The aim is to make it amiable to the public such that it caters to every section of the society making it inclusive which would create a universal and comprehensive surrounding in response to the exclusiveness present in kamala mills today.

//The Bus stand is placed in the centre to be connected to the hawkers who settle near and the public utilities. It is also getting seating support from both the lawns’ slope and the steps of the hawkers’ area.//

//The vending space is created within the complex for women to reach easily. The cycle stand is added near it for shortening the distance women have to walk from it or the two wheeler parking.//

The red areas represent service and utility areas present, while the arrows represent their connection to other such areas.

The Blue areas represent resting and leisure spaces which can be used for various public interactive activities. The arrows show their connectivity to movement paths.

The elements have been arranged in such a way that for usage of service space when women pass through resting spaces it enables the presence of other women while increasing convenience for them for both accessibility and mobility.

The studio gave the students an oppurtunity to develop an understanding of the community residing, and facing problems, in Nehrunagar, Surat. The way of living had a different character which cannot be contained in a high rise. The solution is in designing a housing to these migrants in a way that instead of them adapting to new dwellings, the dwelling adapts to this vibrant community.

THE PRESENCE OF TREES ON COMMERCIAL STREETS INCREASES INFORMAL VENDING ACTIVITIES INTRODUCTION Vendors and thelas in the streets of Ahmedabad are a common sight.

So while we flock to them for snacks, we also keep our eyes open for a place to get seated to eat and chat.

This piques our interest as a topic for public space research. We are trying to find the significance of trees in the street life of Indian public spaces that silently lend themselves to activities like social interaction and informal vending. And so, We hypothesize that the presence of trees on a commercial street increases informal vending. Let us test

THE PRESENCE OF TREES ON COMMERCIAL STREETS INCREASES INFORMAL VENDING ACTIVITIES CONCLUSION Collating our observations, we have noticed that there are sites where trees are not only there to give shade but become part of the entire arrangement of the informal vendors.

Even though the trees are an influential factor for the placement of vendors, the latter’s presence is also determined by factors such as the surrounding building use, kinds of commercial establishments, ROW, parking and even the kind of trees present.

Hence there is no black and white answer to support our hypothesis however what emerged as an interesting finding was that apart from giving shade, trees act as anchor points for social interaction and support for small scale activities that further attract people.

BIO// Hi, my name is Akshat and I am currently completing my 5th year in Bachelors of Urban Design (BUD) at CEPT University (Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology), Ahmedabad, India.

For the past five years I have been engaged in academic studios of both Architecture and Urban Design faculties and have had experiences of being part of workshops of both community participation as well as architectural and construction based projects.

I am currently writing a novel in my free time and have an active poetry collection of over 100 poems. I have written 4 professional plays and acted in over 10.

Apart from designing I am really enthusiastic about Theatre, Poetry and Outdoor exploration. I love to spend time exploring both scenic landscapes and new cities with my family, friends and colleagues.

If there are two things I cannot live without, it’ll be Music and an organized kitchen. I am apolitical and am an atheist, even though I was raised in a very religious and political household.
