CUSTODIAL TRAINING COURSE (MAINTENANCE/FACILITIES)

After successful completion of the custodial training course, learners gain the skills needed for professional employment. They’ll understand cleaning techniques, equipment use and repair, chemical safety, and recycling. Training covers infectious waste disposal, deep cleaning of various facilities, tile and carpet care, and soil prevention, ensuring they’re prepared for custodial roles in today’s job market. FUNDAMENTALS OF ACCOUNTING

Make good decisions when managing a budget for home or business. Learn accounting concepts to deal effectively with the chart of accounts, assets, liabilities, and equity accounts. ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE SPECIALIST

This course emphasizes the core skills of accounts receivables. Besides AR processes, students are introduced to Customers, Invoicing, Sales Orders, Payments, AR Policies and Procedures, and AR Reporting. Training will be performed using Quickbooks. Improve your bookkeeping knowledge-register for the AR Specialist Course.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS AND DESIGN

Adobe’s software is the industry standard for today’s creative technologies. With classes in Photoshop and InDesign, students will have a solid base on which to build their creativity and job skills. Students can subscribe to Adobe software at the Students and Teachers rate which is substantially lower than the professional fee. There is a 7-day free trial period.

ADOBE INDESIGN

InDesign brings text and images together to create high-quality design for print and digital documents from simple one-page flyers and multi-page newsletters and brochures to multichapter books. It is considered a useful skill for many different professions. Basic design principles are included. Fun, creative, and practical.

Mountain Dulcimer is easy & fun to play. You’ll be playing a tune from the beginning! For players with some familiarity with their instrument. You will explore scales, finger-dexterity exercises, chords, and at least two tunings. New tunes will be presented each week in the chordmelody and cross-string techniques. Ornaments, such as hammers, pulls, and slides, will be incorporated into lessons & applied to tunes.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP: DOCUMENT YOUR LIFE STORY

The goal of our workshop is to jump over the hurdle of getting our memoirs onto the page, in a supportive environment. We’ll examine different techniques in current non-fiction and become more comfortable writing about ourselves in a literary way. Students will leave with up to 40 pages of writing. ASSESSMENT TESTING

Placement tests are required for all Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Secondary Education (ASE), and High School Equivalent (HSE) classes.

FOUR STEPS REGISTRATION & ENROLLMENT PROCESS

1. Complete the online registration form online or in-person at BAS. (Only NEW students need to fill out the registration form. You are considered NEW, if you did not attend BAS for the Spring 2025 semester.) If you are NEW, click on the black ‘Register Now’ button - after you complete the form, you will receive an automated email from “registration@asaponlinereg.com”. (Check your spam or junk mail folder if you do not see it in your inbox.)

New students: Please submit your high school transcripts to our office. You may email transcripts to joanneriverabalino@berkeley.net or betseyhoyt@berkeley.net. This is highly recommended before meeting with our counselor.

2. Attend an ORIENTATION & CASAS TESTING SESSION. Allow up to 3 hours for the orientation testing as they are required before students can enroll in classes. See the website for exact dates and location, bas.berkeleyschools.net

Immediately after your orientation session, take the CASAS Reading / Math Assessments to determine your proficiency level in English/Math. Allow about 90 minutes for the test. There are alternative dates to take the CASAS as well.

3. Complete the intake questionnaire and writing sample test online (either at school or from home). Links are emailed to you after you register. They are also on our website.

4. After you have completed Step 3, schedule an appointment with the academic counselor, Betsey Hoyt, to enroll in classes and plan the educational program that best meets your needs. (The appointment link is emailed to you after you register. It is also on our website). Once you are enrolled, Ms. Hoyt will give you the schedule with the location of your classes.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR

The counselor facilitates and supports the academic achievement, personal/ social well-being, and career development of our students. Academic and personal counseling, transcript evaluations, educational planning, assistance and planning for transition to college/career training are also provided. All students meet with the counselor at intake, periodically throughout the year and upon completion.

We are only an official testing center for HiSET now while we are in our new locations. BAS is an official testing center for the HiSET exam. Adults can earn their high school equivalency from the State of California by passing exams. See our testing dates on the website - click on “finish your diploma” then High School Equivalency.

The High School program is designed for adults who wish to earn a High School Diploma. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Total credits required to earn your BAS Diploma is 140. Required courses are offered in the fields of science, mathematics, social science, computer literacy, and language arts.

ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES PROGRAM

GOALBALL

A lively and fast-paced team sport designed for people with all levels of vision impairments. Participants play in teams of three and compete to throw a basketball-size ball embedded with bells into the opposing team’s goal. All players wear blacked-out goggles. Newcomers to the sport are welcome as well as experienced players. We also encourage sighted friends and family to come and play.

Afast-paced team sport that challenges participants to improve their fitness and refine their ball handling and teambuilding skills.

Anyone with a lower limb disability is encouraged to join us, regardless of athletic experience or skill. The program is mixed gender, supportive, and welcoming. Participants often forge lasting friendships. Sessions start with skill drills and are followed by a friendly pick-up game. The coach is on hand to support you. Basketball wheelchairs are provided if needed. Interested participants can also join the competitive teams.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

English as a Second Language (ESL) courses provide English language learners with college, career and life enrichment skills with the opportunity to improve speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary development and grammar.

For students who want to enroll and attend in-person classes at the school our address is 1939 Ward Street, Berkeley. Enter on Milvia:

1.Students are enrolled in the appropriate ESL class, and given the teacher’s name, class time and room number.

2. If the class is currently full, students will be added to a waitlist and contacted by the school when space is available.

For students who want to enroll and attend online classes, via Zoom:

1. Students register at the main office and take CASAS tests

2. Students are enrolled in the appropriate ESL class.

3. Assigned teacher will welcome you with an email including class Zoom link and time.

4. Online classes are offered in the morning and in the evening, but not in the afternoon.

*Online students need a working email account, preferably Gmail. If needed, online students may borrow a Chromebook from the BAS office.

WAITING LISTS

Classes sometimes become full (too many students). In this case, students are placed on a waiting list. When the class has room, students on waiting lists receive a phone call or email from the teacher inviting them to attend.

ATTENDING CLASS

If you stop coming to a class, or did not start class the next week after you registered, we will drop you from the class. If you want to come back, email your teacher. If your work schedule or family responsibilities change and make it hard to come to class regularly, talk to your teacher about transferring to a class at a different time.

ADMISSION AND ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENT

Classes are open to adults (must be 18 or older) regardless of residency or citizenship.

Berkeley Adult School classes are for people who live in Berkeley and the surrounding communities. Funding for these classes comes from the State of California. We cannot serve people who live outside of California.

Transcripts can be obtained by visiting the website bas.berkeleyschools.net. On the homepage header click on More, Students and Transcripts. Then download the transcript form. Please fill out the form completely. Incomplete forms cannot be processed. The cost is $5.00 per transcript. Your signature is required. Please allow 3 to 5 days for processing.

FEDERALLY FUNDED CLASSES

Classes supported by federal funding (Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, English as a Second Language) have no registration fees.

CLASS SIZE/CLASS CLOSURE POLICY

CTE, Life-Long Learning, and Community Education class fees vary. Classes with low enrollment (fewer than 15 students) or low attendance may be canceled. In the event of a class cancellation, full refunds will be given.

REFUND POLICY FOR CAREER TECH ED, COMMUNITY ED, AND SATURDAY CLASSES

Please select classes carefully. Refunds requested by students will be given up to one business day before the start of the first class meeting. After that, no refunds or transfers of fees will be issued.

TRANSPORTATION

■ Bus: BAS is accessible by AC Transit bus.

■ BART: BAS is within walking distance to the Ashby BART station

■ Driving: Follow guidance posted on street signs for where, when, and how long to park. Restrictions for on-street parking are set by the California Vehicle Code and by section 14 of the Berkeley Municipal Code.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS

The BAS Learning Specialist supports all students with distance learning and works particularly close with students who have learning disabilities. I hereby give my consent for school personnel to authorize any and all emergency medical treatment. Unless otherwise indicated I consent to the school’s use of any photographs or video that are taken of me while participating in this program for use in publicity materials.
