INSTALLATION HS P A R G O T O H P

Richard G. Underdown obles, words cannot express the heart warming feeling of having been elected Potentate of Khedive Temple for 2013. I pledge to measure up to the confidence you have placed in me to lead and represent our Temple, along with the capable Divan you also elected. We look toward moving Khedive Temple forward in 2013. The theme for this year is ”Measure Up For Kids”. It is the responsibility of each Noble to measure up for your Temple, your lodge and your Unit or Club. How! by stepping up and participating in Temple fund raisers such as the Rodeo, Seafood Fest and helping in the Golf Classic and Oyster Bowl. It is with the upmost importance that we keep our dues paid and up to date. Without these things we cannot ”Measure Up For Kids”. So come out and measure up with your fellow Nobles as we have fun while supporting the greatest 22 Hospitals that help kids have a future for themselves. Yours in the Faith,

N

fund-raising

It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fund-raising activities, including circuses, to make certain that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach. Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable by laws: §335.3 USE OF NAME "SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN." The use of the name "Shriners Hospitals for Children" or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fund-raising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited. §503.10 The use of the name "Shriners Hospitals for Children" or reference to the hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained. Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: 1. Fund-Raising for Fraternal Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations, shall engage in any fund-raising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof. (b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. (c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it complies with §335.3 and §503.9 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws. (d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fund-raising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and, additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws. (e) A copy of the temple potentate's written consent shall be mailed to the Imperial Recorder. Further, such written material pertaining to the fund-raising activity, as requested by the Imperial Recorder, shall be promptly mailed to him. 2. Fund-Raising for Charitable Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fund-raising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Permission therefor must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. This request for written permission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President—Fraternal, Imperial Council, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356.

>

(b) 100% of the net proceeds from charitable fund-raising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of any existing General Order. (c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fund-raising activity within sixty (60) days of the activity, to Shriners Hospitals for Children, on the Shrine Charity Activity Form (CAF) provided to the temple. (d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of The Imperial Council. (e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman. of the Board of Trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial accounts audited pursuant to §§334.5 & 337.8 of the bylaws of The Imperial Council, shall have its financial accounts audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to The Imperial Council within 120 days of the activity. 3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure: (a) Every fund-raising activity must contain factual information on its solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents regarding the use of the proceeds. Examples “Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Temple) (Shrine Club) activities.“ “Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.“ (b) Every fund-raising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets and documents that "payments are not deductible as charitable contributions." (c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any existing general order by U.S. temples. 4. Compliance with Applicable Laws: It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple's fundraising activities. 5. Financial Records: (a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records per taining to all fund-raising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and disbursements shall be maintained in such financial records. (b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven (7) years. (c) There must be compliance with the Financial Reporting on Charitable Funds and Activities provision of any existing general order. 6. Notification to Nobility: A copy of the Fund-Raising Activities provisions of this General Order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year. 7. Discipline: Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fund-Raising Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of The Imperial Council.

Assistant Rabban Elwood Paschal would like to thank all of you who came out to the annual meeting and election of officers. Thank you for supporting my big step to Assistant Rabban. Congratulations to our two new Divan members – two great additions. Ill. Sir Rick has put me in charge of membership and informed me he would like to initiate at least 100 new Nobles this year. It’s a big task, but with all of us working together, I know we can accomplish this goal – after all, we are Khedive Nobles. We also need to work on our demits and suspensions for non-payment of dues. I understand we cannot stop the Black Camel, but ”we” do have a say in the other losses. As part of the Membership Committee this year, I would like all Blue Lodge Ambassadors and representatives from each of the Units and Clubs to be part of the

I

committee. A date for the second meeting will be announced shortly. I do believe we have great leadership with Ill. Sir Rick and the other Divan members. We are all here to support YOUR Temple. As Nobles of Khedive Temple, we all need to ”measure up for our children”. If there is anything I can do for you feel free to contact me. I welcome your questions, comments and suggestions. Oriental Guide John Howe irst and foremost, I wish to say thank you to everyone who supported me in the January election. It’s a very humbling experience to be elected to the Khedive Divan, and I certainly appreciate the confidence and trust that you have put in me. I’m looking forward to serving you, the Nobility, in the upcoming years. The Temple belongs to each and every one of us as a group and your thoughts on the issues that face us over the next few years will always be welcome. Please don’t hesitate to call, e-mail or drag me off to the side at an event if you have something on your mind. For the benefit of those of you who don’t know your new Oriental Guide very well, I’ll take this one opportunity to give you a little background. I was raised in a small town in eastern Maine, very close to the New Brunswick border. I enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from high school and served roughly 10 years of enlisted service and 19 years as an engineering officer, retiring in 1998. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration while in the Navy. I worked another 13 years as a Program Manager for a ship management company managing the maintenance and operation of Government-owned, contract-operated ships, retiring again in 2012. I’m a Senior DeMolay and Past Master Counselor, Past Master of Warwick Lodge #336 in Newport News, a member of Warwick Royal Arch Chapter and the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite. In 2010 I served as President of the Peninsula Shrine Club and as Captain of the Motor Patrol in 2012. The Potentate has asked me to coordinate the HiNoble Booster Program this year. For a mere $10 a year, you can support our Temples quarterly publication that helps keep you up to date on the your Temple’s news, upcoming events, the musings of the Divan, Units and Clubs heads, a few commercials from Shriners and others businesses and a listing in each edition of the current Hi-Noble Boosters. I encourage each of the Units and Clubs to continue their tradition of becoming Boosters as a group, and also encourage those Nobles who are not members of a Unit or Club to sign up individually using the form in the most recent edition of the Hi-Noble. uring our annual meeting in January, the drivers were asked to raise their hands according to the number of trips they had completed. This was done in increments of 25, up to 100 trips. While this recognition was greatly appreciated, there are several Nobles who deserve special recognition: Noble Raeford Eure has over 250 trips flying patients to our hospitals, Noble Greg Taylor has about 250 trips, Noble Floyd Brogden has about 190 trips, and a newest member passing 100 trips Noble Ed McAlpine. It takes a lot of personal dedication to make that many trips. Well done, Nobles. Remember, it’s the drivers who really know what being a Shriner is about. Most of us are familiar with the general categories of conditions that we treat at our hospitals, but DID YOU KNOW there are many conditions within those categories that we treat?

For instance, did you know that we treat those reddish birthmarks? We see a number of them, but don’t give them much thought. Next time you see one ask the family if they would like to have it treated. Did you know that we treat ear deformities? How about minor and some uncomplicated moderate burns? How about scaring from dog bites, treadmill injuries, or lawnmower accidents? We treat all of these at our Burn Center in Cincinnati. Over the last couple of years we have delivered to our Greenville hospital 7 wheelchairs (2 powered), 3 walkers, and 10 pairs of new crutches. Our hospitals do not have a budget for repairing these items. If you have any of these items in like new condition and don’t know what to do with them, we’ll be glad to deliver them to one of our hospitals. However, the crutches must be the metal ones. Nobles, once again let me express

my appreciation for those who helped raise funds for Transportation during 2012. For the first time in about 4 years, we raised more than we spent. Here’s hoping that we can repeat the effort in 2013. Thank you for your continued support. Isn’t it great to be a ”Khedive” Shriner!

“Noble Raeford Eure has over 250 trips flying, Noble Greg Taylor has about 250 trips, Noble Floyd Brogden has about 190 trips, and newest member Ed McAlpine passed 100 trips”

obles and Families, Greetings From Greenville! All is going well. Our patient count is up and we are busy! We would like to thank all of you for what you do to support the hospitals. Remember, each and every one of you are respresentatives of our Hospitals. Now that we know the world didn’t end in December (only the year did), we can welcome 2013 with open arms and a positive outlook. We are Masons, we are Shriners. We have the best hospitals, bar-none. This is no secret! We have all heard about the shot heard around the world and the greatest story ever told. What about us? We have our obligation, our children. Be proud of who we are and what we do. A whole lot of chidren are leading better lives because of us! My friends, it gets no better than that. Each and every one of us plays an important part in this. A lot of you have been giving a hundred and ten percent for a long time and are still giving. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can’t say thank you enough! Remember the two western movies, ”Support Your Local Gunfighter” and ”Support Your Local Sheriff”? How about ”Support Your Local Shriner”? My Noble friends and families we need help getting the word out and reaching all of those children who need us. We can do it one child at a time. If you are uneasy approaching families (yes, we are strangers to some), we have info cards you can give to them! The cards speak for themselves. We have plenty of them. I would rather approach someone and be embarrassed, then do nothing

Yes, it can be difficult, but it happens to us everytime we go to a furniture store, restaurant or car dealership. However, we are not selling anything, we are offering the best care for their child, at one of 22 hospitals, regardless of their ability to pay, with no strings attached. But wait, there’s more. We will also provide transportation and lodging for the family, if needed. By the end of 2013, I would like to hear one complaint from all the Hospitals, ”it’s too crowded”! Khedive Shrine Band G

By DirectorJeff Davis

reetings Nobles! December turned out to be pretty busy for the Khedive Band. We held our first paper drive in a number of years at Pembroke Mall and even played some swinging Holiday Music while we were there. We also shared our swinging Holiday Music with our friends over at Beth Sholom near College Park. But even with all that, we’d like to thank the Ladies of Zulekia Court # 35 for allowing the Khedive Band to finish up 2012 in style. Our 17 piece dance band, the ”Khedive Notables”, played swing dance music for their Top Hats and Tierra’s New Years Eve Party held at the Lady Shrine Center. Everyone had a blast and the event was a success for the ladies. If you weren’t there you missed a great party and even missed hearing me sing. Well, maybe you didn’t miss that part so much. Even if you did miss it, you’ll have lots more chances to hear the band and hear me sing in 2013! Despite having a busy 2012, I’ve got a lot of things planned for the band this year. The Concert Band has already played at the annual meeting and our brass quartet also played at the memorial service. I’ve planned 9 paper drives at Pembroke Mall this year already. The Concert Band is gearing up for the Saint Patrick’s Day parade in March. The Dixieland band will be preparing for the Spring Open House. The Khedive Notables will start the year off by playing at the Band’s Annual Spring Swing Dinner & Dance Fundraiser at Khedive Temple on Friday, April 26 and again at Westminster Canterbury’s Dance on Friday May 24. If you haven’t heard the Dance Band then I suggest you get your tickets from any band member and come on out. I’ve been told by many that the Dance Band is just plain awesome and we should be playing a lot more. We’ve recently purchased some new sound equipment and we’d love to play for your group for any occasion or activity. Just give me a call at 831-1635 or email me at jeffscottdavis@hotmail.com and I’ll strike up the band for you!

Take Part In Our Fun Join a Unit and/or Club

khedive band at pembroke Mall

In order to help grow the band, we’ve continued our recruitment efforts by inviting local musicians to play with us. As a result, I’m happy to say that 2 of those local musicians, Shelby Barber and Jim Hollinden, are in the process of joining the Masons and Shrine as a result. We look forward to having them become a part of our Masonic family. Our latest addition to Khedive Band is Right Worshipful Jerry Walters, past District Deputy Grand Master for 36th Masonic District. He came out to our dance band rehearsal with guitar in hand and had a blast. It’s just so nice to see our band growing. We’re coming up on the Khedive Band’s 100th anniversary in 2015 so if you play a musical instrument or have played one in the past, come out out to a rehearsal and join in the fun. Our Dance Band rehearses the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 7:30 pm and the Concert Band rehearses on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:00 pm in the Temple band room. We’d love to have you join us. Finally, we’d like to congratulate our New Divan on their election and hope their year goes well. We’ll be here to help Khedive Measure Up For Kids in 2013! Sincerely, Jeff Davis Director, Khedive Bands

Congratulations to Beach Bum Brother John Howe. If you have seen us riding in various parades, we do our best to interact with the folks along the parade routes, especially the young children. Their expressions as we ride up to them and speak with them are amazing. The Beach Bum Brothers are beginning their fourth year in Khedive and are excited about being a part of the various Shrine events. We are planning to participate in everything our schedules allow. January at the Club was Illustrious Sir Rick Underdown`s official visit and it was somewhat well received. Our numbers are still down from years past so once again if you have any ideas on how to rekindle the spark please let us know. We are actively looking for interesting speakers so if you know of someone please again let us know. Nobles, WHO MAKES THE BEST CHILI IN THE HAMPTON ROADS AREA? Well we are going to find out come February 24th as once again we will be holding the 3rd Annual Chili Cook off at the Khedive Shrine Center. Last year’s competition was fierce as Unit’s battle against Unit’s to see who made the best Chili. The Motor Corps came out victorious in the Noble Class by 1 vote while Noble Gary King’s daughter-in-law Cathy King took the prize for best overall for the 2nd year in a row. Now that’s some good Stuff!!! For those of you who were there last year know what a Great time we had, so here it is again!!! Have your Unit or Club come out and participate in this year’s event as we

are looking to double the number of entries as last year. So come out, decorate your area, display your Chili and let the competition begin. Also invite your friends and family members who think that they are known to make a good pot of Chili to the competition. Professional restaurants are also welcome This is absolutely the best time of year for spending a Sunday afternoon with your friends tasting Chili watching the Daytona 500 and sucking down a few cold suds supplied by Hoffman Beverage The Chili Cook Off is sponsored by the Khedive Shriners with all proceeds benefiting Khedive Shriners Transportation Fund. The Cook Off will be at the Khedive Shrine Temple on Sunday, February 24th starting @ 12:30 and going through 4:00, or the end of the race… Thank you and May God Bless You. appy New Year Nobles! We had a great 2012 and I know we’ll have a great 2013 as well. We had a really fun time during our annual Christmas party and installation. Thanks once again to Noble Jeff Ewell for opening his home to us for this event. I’d like to give very special thanks as well to John Presto for stepping up for the 3rd time in his career to be Chief! We really appreciate it. Lastly, a special someone (ME!) won the Fire Brigade Member of 2012. Thank you all for that honor. Let’s take a moment to congratulate our 2013 Officers! ~ John W. Presto- CHIEF, Joshua D. Ramsey – ASST. CHIEF, Kevin M. Gurecki - BRIGADE MASTER, Robert P. Travis, Jr. - SECRETARY / TREASURER, Robert T. Allen – Chaplain, Edward McAlpine (Big Ed)- 1ST Lieutenant, Gerald R. Moore, Sr. (Bob) - 2nd Lieutenant and Stephen T. Alcox – Sgt. at Arms. Well done Brothers! In case you didn’t know, Past Chief, Ray McCoy has stepped down as Secretary/Treasurer after many years in that position and we wish him the best. We look forward to spending time with him on a less official setting and continuing to have a lot of fun. Special thanks to Past Chief, Bob Travis, who has volunteered to step up to Secretary/Treasurer. We know and trust you will do an outstanding job and will help in any we can. Nobles, as our Officers have stepped up to perpetuate our fine Unit and philanthropy, please do all you can to support your Unit this year. It really does take each and every one of us to keep the wheels turning. There is so much negativity and stress all around us these days. We MUST remain diligent. Lead by example with hope and kindness and with fortitude and tenacity. Light beats back the darkness every time. We are entrusted to carry the lantern for our community and especially our children. They are counting on us and we are all the right men for the job. Be sure to stay abreast to our events by reading the emails Bob Travis sends you, checking the Khedive web page and on our Facebook page. We are always looking to build our ranks. If you would like to ride with the best unit around, drop by before one of our monthly meetings or give us a call. We meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Khedive Shrine Center (Rm#7) at 7pm. Fellowship and dinner is served promptly at 6:15. If you haven’t checked out our Facebook page, come on over and “friend” us. Search for us as http://www.facebook.com/khedive.firebrigade. See you online and everywhere else!!

reetings Nobles and Happy 2013 to all. Let me start off by congratulating our newly elected Potentate ILL. Sir Rick Underdown and his Divan for 2013. We look forward to supporting you in the ensuing year. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our new PC Les Aker and his Lady Linda for a great 2012 and wish him success in his new position as President of the Virginia Beach Shrine Club. Motor Corps participated in the Oyster Bowl Parade and later sold Programs during the game. It’s good to again be partnered with ODU and to see the event be so successful. Later in November we headed to Urbanna to participate in the Oyster Festival and had a great weekend of fun and fellowship. PC Kevin Dawkins always brings his BIG screen outdoor theater system and plays movies into the wee hours of the night. This year we even had the owners of the Motel come out and join us, what a great weekend. In December we were invited to participate in the Lynnhaven Colony Christmas Parade, the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Christmas Parade and the Smithfield Christmas Parade. Our annual Christmas Party and Installation of Officers was again held this year at the Smithtfield Station. I would like to thank everyone that attended the party. It

was nice to have so many friends there. I would also like to thank my Installing officers, ILL Sir Joe Register and ILL Sir Buddy Curran and to congratulate all the newly elected Officers of the Motor Corps. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Potentate’s Ball and in March at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. So until then stay safe and never forget our real purpose. Ernie Ayers Captain

public relations By Chairman Cliff Atkinson

G

reetings Nobles. Illustrious Sir Rick Underdown has appointed me as the Chairman of the Public Relations Committee and the Khedive Speaker’s Bureau, replacing John Howe, who was elected as our new Oriental Guide at the January business meeting. At the Units and Clubs Association orientation meeting, John spoke about what constitutes a public relations event. Whenever we participate in a parade, hold a fundraiser or appear at functions such as the Oyster Bowl activities where the public is in attendance, it’s a public relations function. In that regard, each and every one of us are ambassadors of the Temple to the public. It’s incumbent on each one of us to ensure that we all represent the Temple in a favorable light, and to be especially aware of the message that our appearance and actions send into the public domain. Public relations isn’t just providing information to the external public. There’s also a significant amount of information that is disseminated to the internal organization, i.e., to the Nobility. In that regard, Noble Wayne Kelly maintains an e-mail list that

we all use to send out information to the Nobility, including information ranging from the Imperial Potentate’s monthly updates to sickness and distress, meeting dates and fundraiser information that pertains to the Temple. If you’re not on the list, please sign up with Wayne. The Hi Noble is our internal publication, mailed to every Noble four times a year. It includes articles from each member of the Divan, the Units & Clubs, the Temple calendar, information regarding upcoming fundraisers and yes, even some advertising paid for by various businesses in the Tidewater area. We need to ensure that the message that we send to the public, especially during our parades and temple events. Please look at your signage and your displays. The words ”handicapped”, ”crippled” and ”disabled” are out. Phrases such as ”Returning Childhood to the Children” and ”We Work/Ride/Walk so that Children can Walk” are in. If you have any questions in this regard, please give me a call or stop by the Temple and we can discuss your specific issue.

There are some exciting opportunities coming up this year to present ourselves in the best possible light to the public, the first being Shrine night at the Admirals on March 9th. I’m looking for volunteers to help man our two Khedive Information Booths at the Scope during the evening. If you would like to help, please give me a call. Don’t forget that we can provide public relations material for your unit or club functions. There’s a pretty good supply in the Golf Office, but if you need a large quantity of anything, I can have it drop-shipped right to your door. Please visit our Khedive website at www.khediveshrine.org and the Imperial website for Shriners at www. shrinersvillage.com. You can refer your friends and Masonic Brethren to www.beashrinernow.com for further information on becoming a Shriner. Please don’t hesitate to give me a call at 757-635-2599 or drop me an e-mail at shepherd4kids@gmail.com if you need assistance in publicizing your event or with any public relations type questions. APPY NEW YEAR Nobles and may this be your personal best year and also the best for our wonderful fraternity. I would like to congratulate the Divan on the election to their positions. Special congrats to Noble John and Noble Woody on their entrance to the Divan. I know they will do a fantastic job. Illus. Sir Rick has come up with a great motto for the year and it should be noted that we will have BIG duties to fill this year to show the kids already enrolled in our Hospitals and the new kids to come that we will never let them down. The Divan is the face of our Temple but we all are the body. We will have to be willing to work harder this year just to keep up with the progress we have made in years past. With the Divans leadership and the membership

pitching in the sky is the limit. I do not believe that I have met one noble who is in the Shrine for their own benefit. All the Nobles are working only for our kids and with that said know that I am especially proud of our Temple and all our Units and Clubs. Thanks to each and every Noble for all you do. The Tidewater Shrine Club is already full ahead on our plaque program and we will be looking for a record setting year thanks to leaders Jon Beck and Randy Rogers. The Paper Drive is already scheduled and we will need volunteers for that. We will be pitching in to help the PSC at the Langley Speedway event and we have other plans to bring in New Money to the coffers. We meet the third Thursday of the month and we have added a new venue for the meetings. This year we will have a monthly meeting and also our Ladies Night at the Brickwood Grill (formerly Goodfellas) on Rt. 17 about 6 miles from the Coleman bridge. The Feb. meeting will be at Nicks at the bottom of the bridge and the March meeting at Brickwood Grill. If you get confused give me a call at 804-694-7074 for details on where we meet. Enough said for now my Brother Nobles, come and join us and other Units and Clubs through the year. Make this the year you join and work with everyone. I look forward to seeing all of you throughout the year at our many events. Finally Nobles as we always say, AIN’T IT GRAND TO BE A SHRINER. Noble Scott Traner TSC

he Williamsburg Shrine Club would like to congratulate Illustrious Rick Underdown on his assent to Potentate, to Randy Murphy and Elwood Paschal on their advancements, to Noble Woody Brown on being elected High Priest and Prophet, and to Noble John Howe on being elected Oriental Guide. What a great group of officers our Temple has, and what a bright future. In November Ms. Susan Kern, who has served as an archaeologist for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation and is currently a Visiting Professor at W&M, presented the program for our Club. She talked about her book, The Jefferson’s at Shadwell. This book brings out some fresh and relatively unknown facts about Thomas Jefferson and his beginnings, as Shadwell was Jefferson’s birthplace and the home of his parents. In December we had our annual Ladies Night and Christmas Party. This year it was held at the Colonial Heritage dining room and at the conclusion of the evening, then Chief Rabban Rick Underdown, installed our 2013 Club officers, with the assistance of Ill. Joe Register. It made for a fitting conclusion to a great evening. The program for the Club’s January meeting was presented by Noble Cliff Atkinson, from the Speaker’s Bureau, who presented a program on our Hospitals and who gave us even more knowledge to add to our treasure-trove of information about our Hospitals and their operation. Finally, a huge THANKS to Illustrious Joe and the 2012 Divan for a great year, and all of the support they gave the Williamsburg Shrine Club. The Club accomplished much this past year, and without your support, it would not have been possible. And what a joy it was to have the Divan and their

families at our various functions throughout the year. As always, we hope you will take the opportunity to come over and see us. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Holiday Inn on Bypass Road (US 60) in Williamsburg. The social hour begins at 6:00PM with dinner at 7:00PM. Come enjoy the fun, fellowship and food. Directions to the Holiday Inn are easy. Take I-64 to Williamsburg. And when you get here, take the “Camp Perry” exit . Turn onto Rt 143 EAST. Pass through the first stop light, then turn right at the next stoplight, and then turn right again at the next stoplight. That is Bypass Rd., or US Rt 60. The hotel is located at the top of the hill, on the right, next to the Knights Inn 1776. Please call Noble Dick Jones (757-566-0506) by the Friday before the meeting to make a dinner reservation.

FIRST QUARTER 2013

Yacht CLUB By Vice Commodore Bill Hammett

T

ravis Twiford set the 2013 course for the Yacht Club as he assumed command as Commodore at the Club’s 2012 combined Christmas party and installation. He was also installed as the Fleet Captain, Mid-Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs (MAASYC) last September. The installing officer was then Chief Rabban Richard Underdown and our now newest past potentate Joe Register and Lady Holly were in attendance. The photo above includes (L-R) Ill Richard Underdown, Commodore Travis Twiford, Vice Commodore Bill Hammett, Rear Commodore Clyde Dixon, Past Commodore Don Super, Secretary Ray Clyburn, and Treasurer Ron Filer. For the past three years Khedive Yacht Club has won the prestigious Evers trophy awarded for the most outstanding MAASYC Yacht Cub as well as the Burroughs trophy as the most outstanding Yacht Club participating in the annual MAASYC rendezvous. There are several criteria used in determining which of the Yacht Clubs that comprise the MAASYC organization receive these awards.

39

Membership participation is critical to winning; however, there is a far bigger award that comes with participation. By attending member club Commodore Balls and the MAASYC annual rendezvous many Yacht Club members have established friendships over a wide geographic area some of which have lasted many years. This is one of the many unwritten benefits for any active Shriner. Participation is the key. A happy Shriner is an active Shriner. The biggest reward all MAASYC member Yacht Clubs receive is the attention given to our Children’s Hospitals and burn centers during the MAASYC rendezvous. Part of this event includes boat decoration competition. The MAASYC commodore chooses a theme for the decorations. For example, last year the theme was Christmas in July. Others in the host marina notice the decorations and aside from the friendly competition it is a proven and effective way of spreading the word about the great work we do for our children. It is one of the ways the Khedive Yacht Club measures up to our kids. Like any Unit or Club the Yacht Club is always looking for new members. Although we are a boating organization, boat ownership is not a requirement for membership. The Yacht Club is looking for Shriners with an interest in boating. With or without a boat, club members provide invaluable support. For example, during boating season the club hosts several boating rendezvous to various marinas located within the lower Chesapeake Bay area. Ground support plays an important part in the success of these rendezvous. Anyone interested in Yacht Club membership is highly encouraged to contact any of the club officers or the Khedive’s business office. Our ladies attend the meetings. Meetings are normally held the second Tuesday of the month either in an area restaurant or a member’s home. A social hour precedes the meeting followed by dinner.
