AGA KHAN EDUCATION SERVICE, INDIA
Dr Trisha Sen, Head of Academics, Aga Khan Education Service, India (AKESI
Greetings AKESI family!
It’s great to be back! As many of you know, I am back in this role after a hiatus of six years and I am overjoyed to reconnect with the old timers and connect with the newer members. As I review the happenings in these past two quarters of 2023, my heart fills with pride and joy and I am reminded of why I am back and why a piece of AKESI forever stays with us even when we step away.
We hope you all enjoy, as much as we did to compile, the top stories and events that took place across the network in the first half of this year. In the following pages, you will be transported from the Home of the Asiatic Lion, the Gir Forest, where our students learned about the importance of the conservation of wildlife to the Thane Flamingo Sanctuary, where our students were awestruck by the Flamingo’s habitat in the dense mangroves, and learned about looking after our environment by experiencing it. You will get a snapshot of the myriad of events that have taken place in the past six months such as “RISE,” our first face-to-face teacher training program for AKESI section heads from all our units since the pandemic, our online events, in-person celebrations that often involved our dear parents, the opening of our network’s first Virtual Reality Lab and of course, events such as the graduation ceremony of our tiny tots, who are making the oh-so important transition from preschool to the primary section. Happy reading!
As we start our new academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to share some of the initiatives and priorities for this year. Post the pandemic induced lockdown, students across the globe have experienced learning losses, and this is true for many of our students too. To address this, we have made foundational literacy and numeracy, in the primary years, a focus of our curriculum planning and teaching to ensure that all our students are reaching the minimum levels of learning in English and Mathematics in the next two years. To make this a reality we are ensuring our AK schools are aligned with the National Education Policy recommendations. We are using technology and the skills honed during the lockdown via mobile tech labs that have been setup in all our schools. Our teachers and students now have regular access to laptops to enhance their teaching and learning. Focus on a school culture that is emphasizing excellence, sustainability, transparency, ethical practices, empathy and collaboration continues to be our priority. Cleanliness and maintenance of the new additions, washrooms and renovations in our facilities continue to be of utmost importance this year. This year is also about reconnecting with our alumni and strengthening our communication with all stakeholders, especially our parents. Thank you for being a part of and contributing to this continuous journey towards excellence.
“In a fast-paced and rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt and continue learning is an essential skill to develop in order to take advantage of emerging opportunities.”

INQ’ED: an interesting play on words, conveying the significance of this newsletter.
Pronounced as “Inked”, it conveys information “captured on paper”. Further, in the spirit of blended learning, it uses a blend of “Inq” for “Inquiry” and “Ed” for “Education”. Thus, it signifies the importance of Inquiry-based Education.
