GO CRAZY! TV Stars on the Joys of Touring Gershwin
14 | ATGTICKETS.COM
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
After a stint on TV’s Casualty as Sam Strachan, actor Tom Chambers won the hearts of viewers by picking up the Glitterball trophy on Strictly Come Dancing. Co-starring as Irene Roth on the new UK tour of Crazy For You is actress and TV presenter Claire Sweeney. We caught up with them both to get the lowdown on a toetapping show that features glorious Gershwin numbers such as I’ve Got Rhythm, They Can’t
Take That Away From Me and Embraceable You.
What attracted you to the show? TC: Taking on Crazy For You was a no-brainer for me. It is absolutely my favourite all-time musical. It was the very first live musical I ever saw onstage and it just filled me with so much entertainment and wonder. It was amazing to see what they did with the theatre space and how the story was told. It was the only bit of theatre which truly inspired me. CS: I remember seeing Crazy For You the first time around with Ruthie Henshall. The music is just great and I absolutely loved it then and I still love it now. What makes this show so special? CS: There is lots of laughter, pathos and wonderful performances - the cast are super-talented. I’ve never done an actor-musician show before and to work on a show where the band are onstage is amazing. You can see just how incredibly talented these people are as they sing, dance, act and play instruments onstage. TC: I think Crazy For You has the absolutely perfect balance of humour, story and singing. There are so many musicals that are heavy on
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
just one element but this show has the perfect combination of everything. It is a bit like the show dance on Strictly with everything slotting into place in the right order. Is there something particular about Gershwin you love? CS: It was the Gershwin score that made me really want to play Irene - anything Gershwin is fantastic. Someone to Watch Over Me is just beautiful and I get to perform Naughty Baby, so I’m really looking forward to that one. TC: After seeing Crazy For You as a teenager, I went and bought the original score. When I was at drama school, they used to say, ‘Will you stop singing Gershwin?’ I love Cole Porter as well but Gershwin has that sex appeal and more style, more jazz and a bit more pizazz. What do you enjoy about touring in a show like this? TC: The best thing about touring is being able to bring something to you rather than you having to make the epic journey to London. Producers eventually want their material there because it is the theatrical capital of the world and is so loved and respected, but as a provider and giver to the public, it is really important to be able to make sure people can see these shows in their own areas. CS: It’s great getting to see the country and to spend time in lots of wonderful towns and cities, and being able to explore them - but I would only advise doing it if you don’t mind being away from home.

BEING GREEN An interview with the star of Shrek The Musical From the swamp to the silver screen, Shrek has been everyone’s favourite ogre for years. But the switch from the original picture book to the movies and now to the gruelling world of a touring musical has meant adapting to different formats, often appearing in theatres far, far away from home. We caught up with the loveable green ogre to find out how he’s coping with life on the road in the hugely popular musical adaptation of his story. Shrek, you’ve made the big jump from movie to theatre, how are you finding it? It’s brilliant, in the theatre I get to see my audience, it’s a totally different relationship. The move from the big screen to the big stage has been a big adventure and this is a BIG show. The movie was a huge success but in the theatre you get to really feel people’s enjoyment of our story first hand and there’s nothing quite like that. So what can we expect from the show? I mentioned the adventure – it’s an adventure that the audience shares. There’s a lot of laughter, great songs, amazing sets and costumes, there’s a dragon, oh and a talking donkey. Obviously it’s a story about friendship and a quest. Everyone’s favourite fairytale characters play their part and above all else it’s a great night out. There’s something for everyone.

You are working with Lord Farquaad in close quarters every day – is there any tension behind the scenes?! Well he’s certainly got a big ego but he makes up for that with his short stature. Everyone loves me but he has his own showstopping moments and I have to give him some credit for being the so called villain of the story. I’d say that beneath the surface rivalry, there’s a degree of respect. Behind the scenes who is the biggest diva? Farquaad definitely primps and preens more than the rest of us, but then he’s not from the swamp like me. Everyone in Duloc takes a lot of pride in their appearance. Donkey is here too, is he still as annoying as ever? Is he singing in the shower backstage? He talks a lot but he means well. I spend so much time with him in the show but our dressing rooms are not actually close enough for me to hear if he sings in the shower, you’d have to ask Pinocchio, he’s next door to Donkey, and if he wasn’t telling the truth, you’d know. Finally, can you teach me how to do “the roar?” Take a deep breath. Start low, deep in your gut. Build up the volume and open your mouth as wide as possible and let rip. RRROOOOAAAARRRR.

BOURNE TO DANCE How I Came to Create a ‘Blitz’ Cinderella An interview with Matthew Bourne
20 | ATGTICKETS.COM
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
Sir Matthew Bourne has been described as “the world’s most popular living dance maker”. His interpretation of the classic fairytale Cinderella is set during the Blitz and has, at its heart, a wartime romance between Cinderella and a dashing young RAF pilot. Bourne’s vivid version takes audiences into the heart of Prokofiev’s magnificent score, as well as the sights and sounds of war-torn London. Here, Sir Matthew describes how he came to create his extraordinary version of the story. Why did you choose to set the world’s most famous fairytale during the London Blitz in 1940? Prokofiev’s Cinderella was premiered at the Bolshoi in 1946 but I was intrigued to hear that Prokofiev had actually written the score during the Second World War, and this got me thinking: was this dark period in our history somehow captured within the music? Darkly romantic in tone, it speaks of a period when time was everything, love was found and lost suddenly, and the world danced as if there was no tomorrow. Your love of classic films is well known. Were there any particular movies that inspired you? My guiding light with this production has always been the incredible Powell and Pressburger classic A Matter of Life and Death (1946), starring David Niven and Kim Hunter. Niven’s character, Peter Carter, an RAF pilot, miraculously survives almost certain death when his plane crashes into the sea. It soon becomes clear that he has cheated death and the heavenly agents and angels have made a mistake. He hovers between life and death, but guided by a male guardian angel, and the woman he loves, he is given a second chance.
A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8
My Cinderella does not tell this exact story, but its fanciful and particularly English whimsy and romance is, I hope, captured in our story of wartime love and conflict. How historically accurate is your ‘Blitz’ Cinderella? The crucial incident for us is the famous bombing of the legendary Café de Paris on 8 March 1941. On this particular night, the club received a direct hit, killing or seriously injuring nearly 100 dancing couples, cabaret artistes and staff. Our magical Act Two bombed ballroom, with its ghostly dancing couples and the haunting waltzes of Prokofiev, owes much to this tragic night. It represents Cinderella’s dream, as well as her nightmare. Lez Brotherston won an Olivier Award for his Cinderella designs in 1997. Has the concept changed for this new production? Lez and I have had a chance to take a fresh look at the piece from every angle. This is essentially a new production created to tour throughout the UK and beyond. It beautifully captures the realism of our ‘darkest hour’ along with the escapism and glamour of Hollywood. Did your own family experience the Blitz? I dedicated the original production of Cinderella to my grandparents, who kept their families together in London during the Blitz. My parents, living streets away from each other in the East End, survived the nightly onslaught, I’m happy to say, and they both loved to tell me stories from this time - the excitement, the fear and the friendships made.
