LET’S GET ROCKY

We talk to The Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O’Brien about the musical’s enduring appeal.

What was your original inspiration behind The Rocky Horror Show? Someone asked me to entertain the Christmas staff party at the EMI Film Studios and so I wrote a song (Science Fiction Double Feature) and with the help of some jokes, performed to much laughter and applause. In the New Year I thought it might serve as the prologue to an idea that I had for a musical. I shared that thought with Jim Sharman and away we went.

What do you think makes it as successful today as it was over half a century ago? It is simply a musical comedy and as long as it rocks, and the audience are laughing what more could you wish for? It’s very inclusive, it’s very easy to watch. Brad and Janet are a couple that we kind of recognise – we can all relate to them. It’s also a fairy tale which allows us to feel comfortable with its rites of passage storyline: Hansel and Gretel, with Frankfurter as the wicked witch.

What is it about the show that makes audiences feel comfortable joining in? The innocent rather naughty fun of it draws not only a ‘theatre’ crowd but also people who want a fun evening.

What was happening in your life at the time you wrote The Rocky Horror Show? I was a recent father and out of work when I wrote the show. 1972 – 73 was a moment of change. Glam rock and overt sexuality was around, gay people were coming out and

there was a ‘buzz’ in the air. There are certain parts of the world where we are more free to be ourselves. London is certainly one of them. Back in the seventies you had gay bars, but now you don’t need to because if you walk into most bars in London there will be a gay man behind the bar. That is rather nice.

Do you have a favourite character? I would have loved to have played Rocky, that would have been cool. But one thing is essential, you have to be handsome, and muscular and that ain’t going to work. I could have played Janet. They’re all so stupidly wonderful these characters, they’re iconic.

How do you think the live shows compare to the film? The live show has an energy that the movie doesn’t have – it wasn’t intentional, but the film was very slow. Once some fans came up to me and said, ‘did you leave the gaps between the lines so that we the audience could say our lines?’. I said, ‘Well, okay yes’. But no, we didn’t. The movie is a very surreal, almost dreamlike journey, the live show is far more rock and roll.

What’s your favourite part of the show? The noise at the end of Rocky is wonderful – it’s empowering, exhilarating and joyous. The nightly laughter and roars of approval leave the whole cast with a sense of wellbeing and accomplishment that you rarely get from any other show.

The Rocky Horror Show

Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical, The Rocky Horror Show comes to Stokeon-Trent as part of a new world tour.

The Rocky Horror Show is the story of two squeaky clean college kids – Brad and his fiancée Janet. When, by a twist of fate, their car breaks down outside a creepy mansion whilst on their way to visit their former college professor, they meet the charismatic Dr Frank’n’Furter. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, filled with fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity.

Directed by Christopher Luscombe, The Rocky Horror Show is the biggest party and features timeless classics, including Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and of course, the pelvicthrusting, show-stopping Time Warp. Ages 12+

ENJOY THE MAGIC, MOVEMENT AND MUSIC OF NARNIA

As it celebrates its 75th anniversary, C.S. Lewis’s classic The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe leaps from page to stage in Stoke-on-Trent.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, C.S. Lewis’s magical tale, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe remains as wonderful and relevant today as it was in 1950. Leaping from page to stage, audiences in Stoke-on-Trent have a unique opportunity to lose themselves in Narnia, home to an array of enchanting characters many of which are brought to life with incredible puppetry.

Lewis’s enduring fantasy translates so beautifully into live action that it became a BBC TV classic in 1988 and was made into a film in 2005. Director Michael Fentiman, whose stage credits include Amelie and The Windsors: Endgame says, ‘In 200 years’ time, Lewis’s book will be like one of our Mystery Plays. The reason it’s a classic is that it has a sort of palpable mythic-ness that pulls from something older that we can understand subconsciously’.

The vivid and colourful production has a cast of 23 actors, musicians and dancers, including Katy Stephens as the White Witch and puppetry director, Toby Olié who began as a performing puppeteer in War Horse.

‘I moved from the back legs of Joey to the head,’ he laughs. He believes the joy with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, is the extent to which the puppets come embedded in the narrative. ‘They exist in the fabric of the story, as well as an extension or manifestation of it. They’re there to heighten the emotions as well as emphasise the theatricality: if the puppets came out of the story, the narrative wouldn’t be the same.’

Set in wartime Britain, the four Pevensie children are evacuated to a house where they tumble through a wardrobe and into the beautiful and strange world of Narnia. It’s a tale of escapism, wonder and adventure in an uncertain world.

Katy Stephens said, ‘Audiences won’t believe their eyes and ears! For two and a half hours, they’ll be completely transported. It’s a show that will captivate both adults and children alike. The level of talent on-stage is incredible. I’ve laughed, I’ve been moved, and I feel so privileged to be part of this production. I know the audience will feel the same way. It’s the most enchanting spectacle you could imagine.’

BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF

From BAFTA-winning TV to acclaimed stage production, this timeless story continues to be an anthem for the working class.

Boys from the Blackstuff took Britain by storm when it first aired on TV in 1982. Britain was in the grip of social unrest. Unemployment was at a record high, and workers’ unions were at war with the Thatcher government. Written by Alan Bleasdale, Boys from The Blackstuff was seen as a portrait of working-class culture during one of the country’s more unsettling transitions as heavy industry and the idea of a ‘job for life’ was losing momentum and the message from the top was to ‘get on your bike’.

In 2024, Boys from the Blackstuff is still a stark snapshot of reality. Everyone must make a living, pay the rent, provide for the family, but if the means to do that is taken away, what’s the alternative? One of the original TV characters, Yosser Hughes became an unlikely workingclass hero with his relentless mantra, ‘Gizza job – I can do that!’ Desperately grasping onto the hope of being given any menial task to support his kids.

James Graham has taken this powerful story from screen to stage, and it remains a criticallyacclaimed portrayal of unemployment, social inequality and community resilience. Like the popular TV show, the play’s unique blend of humour and pain captures the essence of working-class life.

The play is a collaboration between two visionary writers, Alan Bleasdale, its creator and James Graham who worked with Alan on the stage adaptation. It was commissioned by the independent-minded Royal Court Theatre Liverpool in conjunction with the National Theatre and the legendary Liverpudlian impresario, Bill Kenwright. There is something very fitting that this story – with which he had such a great personal connection – should be his last production.

Bill and Alan Bleasdale first worked together over forty years ago, when Bill produced Alan’s musical play Are You Lonesome Tonight? The show was one of Bill’s first great successes. In an interview in 1991, Bleasdale said: ‘Other producers turned away in horror from Are You Lonesome Tonight? but Bill saw its potential… He’ll go further than anyone I know to make a show work.’

With sell out seasons in Liverpool, at the National Theatre and in the West End when Boys from the Blackstuff premiered, its enduring legacy as a play for all time was properly assured.

Boys from the Blackstuff

Direct from a sold-out run at the National Theatre, James Graham’s acclaimed adaptation of the BAFTA Award-winning TV series.

‘Gizza job. Go on, gizzit.’ 80s Liverpool. Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie and Yosser are used to hard work and providing for their families. But there is no work and there is no money. What are they supposed to do? Work harder, work longer, buy cheaper, spend less? They just need a chance.

Life is tough but the lads can play the game. Find jobs, avoid the ‘sniffers’ and see if you can have a laugh along the way.

Directed by Kate Wasserberg, James Graham’s criticallyacclaimed adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s groundbreaking television series, is coming to Stoke-on-Trent direct from the National Theatre and West End. Ages 15+

Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers tells the captivating tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production ran for more than 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘Brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval.’ (Daily Mail).
