125 YEARS ON DISPLAY
We are incredibly fortunate to have not only a stunning, historical theatre, but lots of beautiful artefacts relating to its history in our possession. From old programmes and posters, signed headshots and portraits of performers, to press cuttings and architectural drawings. Many of these items are on display throughout the building in our bars, foyer, box office and dressing rooms.
Throughout the Stalls Bar are framed items showcasing the early days of Richmond Theatre. A personal favourite are the photographs of the previous ‘Richmond Theatre’ located on the adjacent side of The Green, on display around the corner as you enter the bar. You can also find plans from the theatre’s early days, showing the original seating layout, which offer a clue as to the location of the ‘Stalls Exit’ sign (also on display).
Not all items relating to our history are small. Have you noticed the mahogany corner unit in the Dress Circle? It dates back to 1899 and was originally located in the bar under the foyer in the space now occupied by the Stalls Toilets.
The Upper Bar displays a more modern record of the theatre’s history, in particular its 110th year in 2009 –2010. Taken by Peter Schiazza, this series of portraits highlights just some of the world-class performers who graced the stage that year. Richard E. Grant appeared in God of Carnage in 2009, Ken Stott appeared in A View from the Bridge and Bonnie Langford was in that year’s pantomime of Peter Pan alongside Simon Callow.
Backstage, our dressing rooms are decorated with posters and production images from some of our biggest shows including Vanya, A Little Life, Animal Farm and panto!
To see more material from our archive, come along to the Open Day on 21st September or book a tour to learn more about the items on display both front and back of house.

Here You Come Again

Prior to the West End.
For the first time ever, all of Dolly Parton’s biggest hits can be experienced together in a rollicking and joyous new musical comedy.

Packed with the iconic songs Jolene, 9 to 5, Islands in the Stream, I Will Always Love You, Here You Come Again and more, this lively and touching new musical tells the story of a diehard fan whose fantasy version of international icon Dolly Parton gets him through trying times. With her wit, humour and charm, Dolly teaches him a whole lot about life, love and how to pull yourself up by your bootstraps… even if your bootstraps don’t have rhinestones!
Here You Come Again was originally written by two-time Emmy Award-winning comedy and song writer Bruce Vilanch with Gabriel Barre (who also directs) and Tricia Paoluccio (who also plays Dolly) and has now been adapted for the UK by acclaimed British playwright Jonathan Harvey (Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and Coronation Street)

LEST WE FORGET
Former EastEnders star, Max Bowden takes us on an emotional journey through the trenches of World War I as he returns to the stage this October in Birdsong.
You’re coming back to Birdsong having appeared in a production back in 2015–16. How does it feel to be returning playing Jack Firebrace and can you describe his character? Jack is a sapper, one of the Royal Engineers, and he has a lot of heart and charisma. He’s a real testament to the ‘keep calm and carry on’ spirit of the time. He’s always lifting others, even though he’s suffering from missing his family.
Does it help having seen other actors play the role? No. Because Jack is fictional, the ball’s in my court, so I’ll try to find my own take on who he really is.
Sebastian Faulks’ novel is 30 years old, why does it continue to resonate with people? Thematically, it’s as pertinent as it’s ever been. Sadly, we’re living in a world in conflict. The story contains all the beauty and cruelty of mankind and I think it’s important to show young people what their ancestors went through to fight for their freedom.
What does it mean to honour the memory of men like Jack Firebrace? He represents the everyman who fought in the trenches, so for me it’s just so important to keep telling his story.
You teach acting. What sort of advice do you give to your students? Teaching is my biggest love. I love giving back and helping someone else learn the process and then flourish. My major piece of advice is to educate yourself. Go to art galleries, listen to classical music, read history and immerse yourself in stories. If you want to be truly great you have to put the graft in.
You recently left EastEnders after five years playing Ben Mitchell. How did that experience shape you as an actor? EastEnders is one of the hardest gigs in acting, because a lot of the time you have to strip away your technique and rely on impulse. It’s shaped me in that I no longer approach anything with fear, so I’m very grateful for my time there.
How do you relax away from the stage? I love to play golf and spend time in nature. I also watch a hell of a lot of films – including military ones, which doesn’t sound very relaxing, but it is!
Are you looking forward to hitting the road in Birdsong? I can’t wait. A great thing about touring is the way the story hits differently in different locations. I did Billy Elliot in Richmond when I was 14, and have played there a few times since, including the previous tour of Birdsong. It has a big rake at the front of the stage, and I always worry about falling off as I’m pretty clumsy!

ALAN BENNETT AT HIS BEST
The History Boys is an unmissable comedy-drama that’ll have you contemplating life and all its small glories.
If the role of a writer is to be an observer –someone who keeps their eyes open when everyone else’s are shut – then Alan Bennett has spent a lifetime doing just that. His 2005 collection of prose is titled Untold Stories, and it’s hard to think of another writer who has dedicated their career to uncovering the tales of those living on the periphery.
The History Boys is no different. A ragtag bunch of Sheffield teenagers on the threshold of adulthood and yearning for a life outside the mundanity of their school bubble. Their sights set on the most illustrious universities and their ticket out of the humdrum: Oxford and Cambridge. As the play unfolds, we discover their soaring hopes, their crippling fears and their heart-stopping sadness but all the while with Alan’s trademark sparkling wit coursing underneath.
The magic of Alan’s work is that it speaks so truthfully to so many. Sitting in the audience for one of his plays you can feel the collective unbuttoning as hundreds of people acknowledge their own sadness, their own loneliness, their promises unfulfilled and their hopes that came to nothing. He can be wickedly mischievous and casually devastating all in a single sentence. He has such glorious big-heartedness and such withering wit. He is curious and caring, honest and absurd, uproarious and dazzling.
He’s an all-out entertainer and the finest painter of the ‘long littleness of life’ (Quote from On Rupert Brook by Francis Darwen Cornford) we have.
It’s a privilege to be reviving The History Boys in Alan’s 90th birthday year.
90 years of Alan Bennett.
90 years of Untold Stories.
I hope you can join us.
By Seán Linnen (Director of The History Boys)
The History Boys
Considered a classic, ‘One of the finest plays Alan Bennett has ever written’ (The Daily Telegraph), The History Boys is one of the National Theatre’s biggest ever hits, winning over 30 major awards, and voted the nation’s favourite play.
A group of bright, funny and unruly teenagers with the best grades their school have ever seen are in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is taking them through an eclectic timetable and is at odds with a young, shrewd teacher, and a headmaster obsessed with results and league tables. A hilariously funny and exceptionally moving play packed with witty one-liners and infectious energy, it is both a celebration of the buoyancy of youth and an elegy to lost traditions.
Alan Bennett has been a household name for more than 60 years. His numerous plays include Forty Years On, Enjoy, The Madness of George III, Single Spies, Talking Heads and The Lady in the Van.

CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS
Following the sell out run of Fiery Angel’s And Then There Were None in 2023, we are delighted to bring you another Agatha Christie classic this autumn.
Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, detective Hercule Poirot must identify the murderer – in case he or she decides to strike again.
Written 90 years ago, Murder on the Orient Express is one of Christie’s greatest literary achievements and the eighth novel which featured the iconic Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, who was a staple in Christie’s works from 1920–1975. In a rare interview where she was asked which was the best Poirot novel, she revealed after some hesitation that it was probably Murder on the Orient Express!
Though Murder on the Orient Express is a work of fiction, Christie was inspired hugely by her real-life experiences and travels. Christie had long professed a love of the Orient Express, finally achieving her dream of travelling on it in 1928 with her first solo trip abroad. In writing the story, she painstakingly noted the details of the carriages; clues such as the position of door handles would prove vital to Poirot’s investigation. There was even a real-life case where the Orient Express was caught in a snowdrift (though thankfully, Christie was not aboard the train at that time)!
With numerous radio, television, stage and film adaptations, the first of which was the awardwinning 1974 film starring Albert Finney as Poirot, Murder on the Orient Express is a truly iconic, internationally adored title. Whether you are familiar with the story, or this is your first time experiencing this ingenious murder mystery, audiences can be assured they’ll be in for a deliciously thrilling ride!
