I begin this welcome with a standing ovation to you, our audiences, for your support of our Pantomime Charity Partners. We raised funds for RNLI Chiswick –our local branch of the Lifeboat Institution with whom a member of our team has volunteered and provided lifesaving response – and the Richmond Theatre Trust – an independent charity which enables our Creative Learning department to undertake additional, ambitious outreach work with young people and carers in our community for whom theatre would ordinarily be inaccessible. We are incredibly grateful to you for believing in the work of these vital organisations, with both receiving almost £10,000 in donations over the festive season.
We are delighted to share our fresh season of shows with you, welcoming returning titles and premiere productions alike to our stage. The Rocky Horror Show’s return will be sure to thrill, while Little Women will warm hearts. Children can learn about the gory parts of the past with Horrible Histories, and we have a top selection of famous faces visiting us for one night only, including Nick Mohammed, Guenther Steiner, Rory Bremner and Jay Rayner

Tracy-Ann Oberman delivers impact as a 1930s female Shylock in The Merchant of Venice 1936.
Shakespeare’s enduring classic is transported to 1930s East London against a backdrop of political unrest and the Battle of Cable Street, when the Jewish community was targeted by the British Union of Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley. Mosley’s Blackshirts marched through the area, only to be confounded when the non-Jewish community stood by their Jewish neighbours.
This striking and impactful interpretation holds personal significance for Tracy-Ann Oberman who plays strong-willed single mother Shylock who runs a pawnbroking business in London’s Jewish East End.
Tracy-Ann says, ‘The women in my family were as tough as nails. They had nicknames like Machine-Gun Molly and Sarah Portugal. They came to London from antisemitic Eastern Europe at the turn of the last century, and despite all odds managed to build a life and make a living.’ She continues, ‘My female Shylock is based on my great grandma, a Jewish widow who stood up to the marching fascists, and was supported by their Irish, Afro-Caribbean and working-class neighbours. The message in the play feels more pertinent than ever. It’s one of unity and standing against hatred and the production’s impact has been beyond my wildest hopes and ambitions for it.’
In this production, Shakespeare’s harsh plot snaps brilliantly into place against a backdrop of rising fascism. Shylock, a Jewish moneylender becomes entangled in the affairs of wealthy non-Jews and suffers terribly for it. In this new version, Oswald Mosley inspires Antonio, the
merchant who takes a loan from Shylock and offers a seemingly fanciful penalty for defaulting: a pound of flesh.
Reclaiming the play from a Jewish perspective has proved a transformative experience. Antonio and Portia are chilly foils to this Shylock. The result is funny, upsetting – and unexpectedly moving as the events of the play meld with the heightened drama of the Battle of Cable Street.
Tracy-Ann says, ‘playing Shylock as a woman isn’t about softening the character – I didn’t want to make her a victim or change her role in the story’. The production vividly summons a febrile moment in British history. ‘My dream is that the Battle of Cable Street will be taught as part of the British civil rights movement. Mosley had been sending his Blackshirts to smash doors, break windows, attack synagogues and people on the streets, but my great grandmother reminded me that the whole community stood together. That was a beautiful moment.’

How award-winning Paul Hendy’s love of comedy began, and how it inspired him to write and direct The Last Laugh.
Christmas Day, 1972. I’m six years old, sitting cross-legged on the brown swirly carpet in front of the television. Two men in brown suits are on the screen. The tall, funny one with glasses, holds a 12ft-long comedy leg. My whole family is laughing hysterically. I start to laugh too, and even now, fifty-two years later, that moment still makes me smile. Those men were Morecambe and Wise, and that scene sparked my lifelong love of comedy. My wife might call it an obsession.
I’ve always been fascinated by what makes something – or someone – funny. I wrote The Last Laugh to explore those questions, to examine comedy’s mechanics. How a pause, a look, or one word can change the way a joke lands – or doesn’t.
People ask why I chose Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse. Each had a unique comedic style. Tommy was naturally funny – he couldn’t help it. Even when his material wasn’t the strongest, he made it work just by being Tommy.
Bob Monkhouse, in contrast, wasn’t naturally funny. He was a master craftsman, a brilliant writer, and a meticulous joke-teller who honed his material until it was perfect.
Eric Morecambe was somewhere in between. He had impeccable timing and is (arguably) Britain’s greatest comedian, certainly the most beloved. But he and Ernie understood early on that great writing was key to their success.
Another reason I chose these three was because I had the actors to play them.
As you’ll see, Damian Williams is the perfect Tommy Cooper, Bob Golding embodies Eric Morecambe’s essence, and Simon Cartwright is Bob Monkhouse. Thank you to these incredibly talented actors for their professionalism and dedication – I think they’re more obsessed than I am! (Damian even has a bar in his garden called Cooper’s Bar, and Bob named his son Ernie!)
The Last Laugh is my love letter to the golden age of British comedy. They were comedy gods to people like me, dreaming of a career in entertainment.
When the play debuted at the Edinburgh Festival in 2024, the reaction was overwhelming. It was incredibly emotional to see how these three comedians are still loved decades after they passed. Whether you grew up watching them or are discovering them today (check them out on YouTube), I hope The Last Laugh brings some of the joy and laughter that these three men brought to so many.

Peek into the world of our most popular monarch and the image she presented to the world.
Daisy Goodwin’s debut play, By Royal Appointment, offers an intimate exploration of the unique relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and her long-serving dresser, the daughter of a working-class family. During her 30-year tenure in the royal household, The Dresser evolved from personal dresser to the Queen’s close confidante, holding the official title of Personal Assistant, Adviser and Curator to Her Majesty the Queen (Jewellery, Insignias and Wardrobe). Their bond was characterised by mutual trust and a shared sense of humour, often providing candid advice on attire and accessories.
The late Queen was around 5ft 2ins in her later years and she is famously thought to have said ‘I have to be seen to be believed’. The play explores the influence of fashion in the royal family, with Queen Elizabeth’s distinctive look –
namely her striking hats and bright neon or bold colours – being managed by a team, most powerfully by her Dresser, the woman who held the most sway when it came to advising the Queen on her appearance. From her lipstick colour to her distinctive hats and stylish dress coats, the Queen’s wardrobe served as an expression of her thoughts and decisions, emphasising how what she wore could convey far more than words ever could. The Queen herself wasn’t naturally interested in fashion, she felt most at home in her country attire of tweeds and plaid skirts. It was her Dresser who held the key to unlocking her public persona. The Dresser, however, faced the temporary nature of royal favour, and it’s this unsettling fact that lends poignancy to the story. Through this relationship, the play explores the emotional and power dynamics of the monarchy and is an extraordinary insight into how the pair balanced a strong personal bond while maintaining professional distance.
Written by the creator of award-winning ITV drama Victoria, Daisy Goodwin is no stranger to tackling royal subject matters. Her four novels have been New York Times bestsellers and translated into ten languages.
By Royal Appointment is directed by Dominic Dromgoole with Anne Reid as Queen Elizabeth II, and Caroline Quentin as The Dresser. This beautiful play will appeal to those interested in both the human and the fashionable side of monarchy; its compelling narrative, gives audiences an intimate look at the Queen’s most influential relationship behind the throne and of how her image was carefully curated –one garment at a time.
By Royal Appointment is a behind the scenes peek into the world of our most popular monarch and the image she presented to the world.
Starring national treasure Anne Reid as The Queen and star of stage and screen Caroline Quentin as The Dresser. The new play is written by Daisy Goodwin who created the hit ITV series Victoria and directed by former artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe, Dominic Dromgoole
The Queen herself is uninterested in fashion, her look is managed by her designer, her milliner and most powerful of all, her Dresser who was a working-class girl who goes from advising The Queen on the colour of her lipsticks to the real power behind the throne. But the Dresser, like all royal favourites is living on borrowed time.

How do you feel about directing the first-ever stage adaptation of the iconic detective, Inspector Morse?
I remember my parents really enjoying Morse on television when I was a child. I know how much the character is respected and loved by thousands of people so it’s a great honour to be able to create a stage production of Morse. This story has a brilliant plot; it’s a murder investigation which unfolds inside a theatre. There are many layers for Morse to fathom his way through. What is real and what is imaginary? The worlds of crime and drama become intertwined – it’s thrilling.
Will there be similarities between the stage character of the detective, played by Tom Chambers, and the character in the longrunning TV series, played by John Thaw?
Yes! Tom and I have talked in detail about the character of Morse and how he’s going to portray him. I’ve worked with Tom before. Like John Thaw, Tom is also from the north of England, and is exactly the same age as John Thaw was when he played Morse.
Do you need to know anything about Inspector Morse before seeing the production?
No. Morse and his sidekick Lewis are classic detective characters, like Holmes and Watson; solving crimes to bring about justice and make the world a better place.
Crime and mystery stage plays are really popular at the moment – what do you think audiences will love most about the show? Unlike other crime fiction on-stage – where the audience might be aware of certain things ahead of the detective – in this play the audience discovers clues and facts at the same time as Morse does. The mystery, the suspense, the intrigue remains at fever pitch and the audience will find themselves inside Morse’s thought process as he works his way toward the truth.
Are the stage characters similar to how they appear in the novels by Colin Dexter?
Playwright Alma Cullen worked closely with Colin Dexter on the creation of these characters. and was one of the main writers of the television series. Dexter describes Morse as ‘Someone who can do a crossword in two minutes. He has a quickness and ability to come to an immediate conclusion – even if it’s the wrong one! He’s melancholy rather than morose; a quiet humour’. The stage characters Alma has written are as Dexter created them for his novels.
What do you enjoy the most about directing for stage? I love it. It’s an endless guessing game – every night, hundreds of complete strangers sitting in the dark – what will they think? Will they be scared? Will they laugh? What will they think about it?
All of these questions are in my head as I sculpt the storytelling on-stage. It’s a thrilling job and it has just as many twists and turns as a good crime fiction!
