Welcome to What’s On! Welcome to a rich, exciting summer and autumn at the Palace and Opera House... It’s a great time to enjoy all Manchester has to offer and we look forward to welcoming you for a fantastic night out at our venues this season! When I arrived as Theatre Director six months ago I wasn’t sure what to expect. Like so many who grew up in the North West, I’d visited these two landmark buildings as a child and, coming back to the city after an absence of 25 years, I couldn’t wait to get inside them again and to meet the audiences and staff who make these theatres what they are today. Without doubt, the greatest thrill is being in a full house at curtain call when 2,000 people get to their feet to show their appreciation for a wonderful evening of live theatre. It’s exhilarating to be part of the electricity shared between audiences and performers on these nights. If you were lucky enough to see Miss Saigon you’ll appreciate the sheer scale of this spectacular musical and the capabilities of our venues. Seeing the work that goes into getting these larger shows onto the stage has been a revelation: the enormous technical demands, the huge mechanics and the numbers of highly skilled people needed behind the scenes who make helicopters fly and transport us from Saigon to America and back again. I watched as over 100 people worked for three days round the clock to put the Miss Saigon set into the Palace – it was an impressive drill – and, just 10 weeks later, it’s back on the trucks and off to Bristol.

The staff at the Palace and Opera House are one of the most positive and enthusiastic teams I’ve had the privilege to work with. They have a deep love of theatre and the historic theatre buildings we are custodians of, and a great attitude towards supporting each other which I know translates to our visitors. Our audiences are right at the heart of our future plans with new projects across both venues to raise customer service standards and make sure more people across the North West know about the great shows and events we have on. We are also embarking on new ventures with local communities, businesses and artists, as well as working with local partners on some inspiring new events made here in Manchester. Throughout the year we will be unveiling even more fantastic productions, including shows that have never been seen outside London and launch their first UK tour here in Manchester, so watch this space. We look forward to welcoming you soon Sheena Wrigley, Theatre Director

CHILD’S EYES How Roald Dahl Came to Write Matilda

A U G U S T – N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8

In just a few short years, Matilda The Musical has become a phenomenon in musical theatre. Based on the book by Roald Dahl and first staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company in its temporary theatre the Courtyard in 2010, Matilda transferred to London’s Cambridge Theatre the following year and has picked up countless awards since then.

parents and teachers always telling you what to do. He, however, could recall those feelings with visceral accuracy. This was never more apparent than when describing his schooldays. He remembered what it was like to be bullied at boarding school, to be an outsider. He also believed that most children could find their way out of adversity if they used their imagination.

It opened on Broadway in 2013, followed two years later by touring productions in North America and Australia. With book by playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the show is now embarking on its first tour across the UK and Ireland.

Strangely, as a boy, he was often left to his own devices. His father died when he was three and though he described his mother as ‘the primary influence’ on his own life, many of his boyhood adventures happened while her back was turned. While he was a strong family man, he knew that children were natural survivors. Many of his child characters are orphans and semi-orphans or, even worse, have parents like Mr and Mrs Wormwood.

Here, Donald Sturrock, Roald Dahl’s biographer, looks at the life of the author and how he came to write Matilda: ‘Roald Dahl had many talents. He was an aviator, a spy and an antiques dealer - as well as the author of adult short stories. But it was not until 1958, when he was in his early 40s, that he started writing his first children’s book, James and the Giant Peach. A master of the elegant sentence, Dahl always possessed a mordant wit and a vivid, subversive imagination. He also had a rare gift that many adults found unsettling: he was able to see the world through a child’s eyes. Roald told me once that within 10 minutes of settling down in his little writing hut at the bottom of the garden, he could go back to being 6, 7 and 8 again.

As a writer, Roald was a perfectionist and often went through many drafts of his books. Matilda was no exception. He started writing it when he was 70 and the first draft took him nearly a year to complete. But it was not right. Matilda, for example, was an unattractive character who was eventually killed. ‘I had awful trouble,’ Roald later admitted. ‘The main character, the little girl, kept changing.’ So he went back to the drawing board and rewrote it. When the final version was published, it was an immediate success. Roald died two years later, in 1990, with unfinished stories still left in his writing hut.’

In old age, he often proudly described himself as ‘an infantile geriatric’. Roald thought most adults had forgotten what it was like to be tiny, with

Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece: a full-blooded ballet of love, luxury and passion. The young and naïve Manon is torn between two lives: privilege and opulence with the wealthy Monsieur GM, or innocent love with the penniless student Des Grieux. Wanting it all will be her downfall. Beggars and aristocrats, harlots and courtesans fill the stage to take you from a gambling den in 18th century Paris, to a desolate Louisiana swamp, while English National Ballet Philharmonic soars through the haunting score by Jules Massenet. This is one of British ballet’s most dramatic stories.

It was choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan – one of the greatest ballet choreographers of the 20th century. INTERVIEWS

Connor McIntyre

Les Dennis

After being on Coronation Street, obviously playing an Ugly Sister is quite different. Were you purposely looking for something more light-hearted for your next role? I wasn’t particularly looking for anything! My great mate Les Dennis offered the idea up and when I heard it, I thought what a great idea. What a perfect antidote to playing Pat Phelan and playing somebody so awful for so many years. It’s a great idea, hopefully it will be great fun and playing to North West audiences – fantastic!

You’ve done a lot of pantos in your time! Can you tell us a bit more about your panto career? My panto career began in Stockport at the Davenport Theatre when I worked with Russ Abbot. It must have been around 1982 and since then I’ve done 21 pantomimes, so I’ve done most of them! I’ve done Cinderella about 5 times and I love this particular show; it’s the classic pantomime and I’m so looking forward to being an Ugly Sister, especially with my other sister who I’m so excited to be related to for the first time!

There’s obviously a history between you and Les from Coronation Street - are you looking forward to working together in something that’s more comical? I very much am, and I’m very much looking forward to learning at the feet of one of the masters. I mean really, Les is very experienced and this is his domain so it will be great fun… for everybody I hope!

How did you react when you found out that you would be working with Connor again? I was really excited about it. I came to see Dick Whittington last year and saw in the back of the programme that Cinderella had been announced and I just remember getting onto Michael Harrison and suggesting it, and they went with it! When they did I was so excited because it’s Michael and Phelan back together, and it’s Michael’s chance to get revenge.

And what are you most looking forward to about panto? Well, it’ll be very different to what I’ve been doing for the last couple of years. A lot of fun, high-energy stuff and I’m learning a lot. It’s the complete counterpoint to Pat Phelan, although I suspect there will be a lot of Pat Phelan references and even the audience will be bringing those. Given the public’s strong reaction to Phelan and the panto announcement, how do you think audiences will react to seeing you live on stage? I think they’ll love it. I think it will be a relief for lots of people to see I’m not actually like that! And I’m sure they will enjoy it. The audience will be getting confused, they will be shouting ‘Michael, he’s behind you!’

A U G U S T – N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8

Do you have any fond memories of visiting pantomimes yourself? Pantomime was the first thing that I saw in Liverpool when I was a kid. I saw Tommy Steele in Jack and the Beanstalk. I sat there and I remember thinking that’s what I want to do! I want to be climbing that beanstalk and getting to the top and fighting that giant! So it kind of got me into the business. It was so enjoyable and I think that the actors in panto have a real responsibility because a lot of kids are seeing theatre for the first time and if they love it, they will come back and see other things.

Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet is the perfect marriage of a powerful dramatic musical score with a passionate love story – every dancer’s dream. Swan Lake is a signature piece of MCB’s repertoire.
