What’s On | From September 2023
Big. It’s Huge! Pretty Woman:
It’s
The Musical comes to Glasgow

Welcome back to The King’s and Theatre Royal

I am delighted to present such a thrilling season ahead, with dazzling musicals, such as Pretty Woman and the return of The Bodyguard, productions fresh from the West End, including 2:22 A Ghost Story, and electric touring work, such as Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet. The stages of The King’s Theatre and Theatre Royal feel like the places to be right now.

For families there’s always opportunities to make memories together. In 2024, you can look forward to the arrival of the spectacular Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical, and of course we’re feeling the first stirrings of festive spirit.

There’s going to be no better place at Christmas, as we look forward to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at The King’s and Scottish Ballet’s magical new Cinderella story, Cinders!, at the Theatre Royal. Outside of Christmas you can expect more great offerings from our national performing companies as National Theatre of Scotland arrives with their gothic, all-female and non-binary reimagining of a classic with Dracula: Mina’s Reckoning and Scottish Opera offers a stellar new season from start to finish. On behalf of everyone at our theatres, I would like to offer my thanks to you all for continuing to make them truly special places. There’s no audience quite like a Glasgow audience.

As ever,

Scan to Book

We are delighted to welcome you to our venue, where we want everyone to enjoy the show. With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy the performances on-stage. We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for all – you can help by ensuring the professionals on-stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and being kind to our dedicated staff, who are here to keep everyone safe. Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated.

A round of applause to you – all our audience members who have welcomed our charity partners at The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice with such generosity in the first half of 2023. Thanks to you, we’ve seen great success with bucket donations, money raised through our reusable Stack Cup scheme and in fundraising events, such as our Gin and Jammies night earlier in the year.

This is a particularly special year for the hospice as 2023 marks the 40th year of their gold-standard palliative care. While the charity receives a small proportion of funding from the NHS, it heavily relies on public donations and the contributions you make to continue their vital work.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Rhona Baillie, Chief Executive for The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, remarked:

‘For 40 years, staff and volunteers have been dedicated to providing the best possible end-of-life care to people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses and their families. We are proud to provide this vital service with care and compassion for all.

We could not offer our services, however, without the unwavering and supremely generous support from the people of Glasgow and further afield. We believe we have the best supporters in the world.’ With this in mind, we hope you can continue to help us do our bit in aid of a wonderful cause, which may, one day, need to look after one of our own.

Under the buzzing lights of a 19th century psychiatric hospital in Aberdeenshire, Mina Murray recounts her encounters with the most terrifying of beasts: Dracula.

Morna Pearson’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic is filled with her trademark humour and taste for the strange, gothic, and grotesque. In this breathtaking production that transposes the action to the Scottish landscapes that inspired the novel, we witness the addiction, intoxication and empowerment of Mina.

The Million Pound Question

An interview with Rory Bremner, star of thrilling new ‘quizroom’ drama, Quiz: The Coughing Major Millionaire Scandal.

You’ve only starred in one other play before, Noël Coward’s Relative Values, what made you say yes to this? And what are you looking forward to most about touring this production?

Loved Relative Values – for someone used to stand-up, it’s great to be part of a team. With Quiz, I’m really looking forward to the challenge of playing a character over a whole play, not just a short sketch. Also, Chris says he hates my impression of him, which makes it even more fun!

You’re an impressionist, what is it that helps you most get into a character when there is often so much information out there about a person in the public eye?

Always the voice. Once you get that, the rest often follows. It’s an instinctive thing with impressionists. But playing a character is going to involve some acting. Luckily both the writer and the director are as good as they come. That’s really exciting and makes me want to raise my game.

How familiar were you with the scandal of ‘The Coughing Major’? Had you seen the play when it was on in the West End back in 2018, or seen the ITV adaptation which aired in 2020?

I knew about it and enjoyed the TV version with Michael Sheen (who’s cornered the market in playing well-known figures on film – I must meet his agent) and Matthew McFadyen, who’s terrific in everything he does – especially Succession. His character Tom Wambsgans reminds me of Peter Mandelson. I’d love to see him play that part. I’ve deliberately avoided watching Quiz again though, as Daniel Evans (the director) told me not to. It’s the first note he gave me and I’m doing what I’m told! I’m also not starting too soon, as it’s enough for my wife to live with Chris Tarrant for four months. Six would be too much!

If you could star in a play centred around the life of another of your well-known impressions, who would you like bring to the stage most? Or which do you think audiences would have the largest appetite for?

Maybe Boris or Trump. I enjoy doing them, but I can’t stand either of them, so it might drive me mad. I helped Kenneth Branagh and Dominic West with Boris and Prince Charles respectively. We spent most of the time laughing.

Who would be at the top of your list of impressions you wish you’d done (or have yet to do!)?

Playing myself. That’s the hardest one of all and I still haven’t nailed it yet.

THE COUGHING MAJOR MILLIONAIRE SCA N DAL

In a shockingly shameless scam, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was duped out of £1,000,000. Or was it?

Rory Bremner stars as Chris Tarrant and Charley Webb (Emmerdale) as Diana Ingram in Quiz, the thrilling and entertaining ride through the infamous Coughing Major scandal which engulfed the world’s most popular TV quiz show.

The story remains a mystery and had over six million people glued to their screens watching ITV’s adaptation of this West End smash hit play.

QUIZ is a fictional imagination based on real events which took place in 2001 following an episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It is not in any way connected with the makers of the programme or any of the individuals portrayed. The television programme Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is produced by 2waytraffic.

A Time to Fear

Writer Danny Robins talks to us about his hit play, 2:22 A Ghost Story

Can you tell us a bit about 2:22 A Ghost Story? It’s definitely best going into 2:22 knowing as little as possible about the production, but I can say that the story revolves around a married couple, Jenny and Sam who are redecorating their new home, and Jenny is convinced they’re visited by a supernatural presence every day at 2:22am.

It’s a jump-out-of-your-seat, spine-tingling psychological thriller, but also a really great night out. It’s a good way to get to know your neighbour as well, as you’ll probably need an arm to grab for support!

What were your inspirations for writing

2:22? It was inspired by a friend of mine who said she’d seen a ghost, who’s not the type of person I’d expect to have that kind of experience. I was immediately fascinated by the idea that different people would react to her in very different ways – some people might believe her and some people might laugh at her.

I then thought, what if you distil that range of opinions into a couple, where one person believes there is a ghost in the house and the other person adamantly disagrees. What then happens to their relationship?

There are also some uncanny parallels between my life and the play. I was redecorating an old

Victorian house with my partner that was once owned by an elderly woman – sadly, we weren’t haunted by the supernatural!

What’s the working relationship like between you as writer and all the creatives who bring the script to life? I’ve been very closely involved in the production – I work with every new cohort of actors at rehearsals and am still a regular in the audience. As we’re on our fifth iteration in the West End, my involvement does become less necessary, but it’s a project that has been life-changing for me, so it’s always a joy to come back to.

Do you believe in ghosts? Have you had any supernatural experiences? I always call myself a skeptic who wants to believe, but I’m not quite there yet. I’ve never had a supernatural experience, but I still live in hope!

What will audiences love most about the show? Sometimes theatre can feel a little stuffy, and audiences are asked to sit quietly – but this play gives you the license to gasp, scream, and yelp!

2:22 is an adrenaline-fuelled experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. I’m sure that all families, couples, and friends who see the show will spend the rest of their evenings haunted by possibilities of the supernatural!
