Riverdance – 25th Anniversary Show returns next year with the stirring music and thrilling energy of its Irish and international dance. Celebrated the world over it continues to be a firm favourite. Originally starting out as a low budget Irish film, the international award-winning musical Once is filled with live music and is a spellbinding and uplifting story of hopes and dreams. If you loved South Park and Avenue Q, don’t miss the outrageous musical comedy and worldwide sensation The Book of Mormon. Come and say ‘Hello!’ when it visits next June. Natural Woman The Story behind Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.

At the age of just four years old, Carole Joan Klein’s parents realised she had absolute pitch – a rare talent that enabled her to correctly name a note just by hearing it. Her music-loving mother was delighted and began giving her piano lessons – raising her height on the stool by stacking phone books so she could reach the keys. And so began the career of one of the 20th century’s most prolific singersongwriters. Carole King, as she would soon be known to the world, has written or co-written 118 pop hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 61 UK hits. Her career has been the soundtrack to millions of people’s lives since the early 1960s and many international artists have burst onto the world stage singing her songs; Billy Fury’s ‘Halfway to Paradise’, ‘The LocoMotion’ for Little Eva, and the Shirelles’ number 1 hit ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ to name but a few. King even inspired the much-loved hit ‘Oh, Carole’ penned in her honour by a childhood sweetheart called Neil Sedaka! Carole King’s success continued to endure into the latter half of the 20th century, winning four Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song – the first woman to receive the award.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells her inspiring true story – that of an ordinary American girl with an extraordinary talent; it explores the love-story between her and her husband and writing partner, Gerry Goffin, their friendship and creative rivalry with fellow writers Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and her meteoric rise from heartbreak to become one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Her sensational music is the backdrop to the story of her rise to stardom, and includes tracks from Tapestry, one of the best-selling albums of all time as well as countless classics such as ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’, ‘Take Good Care of My Baby’, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’, ‘So Far Away’, ‘It Might as Well Rain Until September’, ‘Up on the Roof’ and ‘The Locomotion’. Given Carole King’s enduring popularity, it’s little surprise that Beautiful enjoyed a highly successful West End run of two and a half years and a sell out tour in 2017/18. This year, the Tony® Awardwinning show is back in Edinburgh to thrill audiences with tracks that are recognisable to countless people across several generations. It really is a show that lives up to its name – and one that’s not to be missed.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier Award-winning West End and Broadway show is coming back to Edinburgh. Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof and The Locomotion.

A Perfect Match We catch up with Daniel Healy who plays ‘Guy’ and Emma Lucia who stars as ‘Girl’ in the 2020 UK tour of Once.

10 | ATGTICKETS.COM

FROM DECEMBER 2019

Daniel, do you remember the first time you played the role of Guy? I got to play ‘Guy’ in the West End, so that was a special night. My parents came and all the friends who could be there. I remember giving it absolutely everything as I thought it would be my last time playing the role. How wrong I was! I’m just so blessed to be able to tell such a beautiful story. Why do you think Once resonates with audiences? D: Glen Hansard’s music is timeless, Enda Walsh’s script is perfect and the story is conveyed by a stellar cast. We have all had that once-in-a-lifetime moment when we’ve met someone who turned on the light in our eyes and reminded us of our true selves. Did we fall in love and sail into the sunset? Did we let it fall away due to outside circumstances or timing? Was it only for that moment? You’ll have some questions for yourself after you see the show. I think that’s why people love it. What do you think, Emma? It’s a story of love and friendship that isn’t romanticised. Often in theatre, decisions are tailored to ensure that the piece ends ‘happily ever after’ which isn’t always how life is. Once is truthful and bare, with the most heart-wrenching music you’ll ever hear. Tell us a bit about Girl. What’s she like? ‘Girl’ is a beautiful example of someone who’s experienced a huge amount of pain, but refuses to let it taint her outlook on life. She quite literally laughs in the face of cynicism and is constantly trying to uplift and inspire others. Daniel, you’ve cowritten songs with Ronan Keating, who you met through Once. How was that? Ronan is someone I consider a great friend. We met on Once and I’ve played in his touring band for the last four years. I wrote six songs on

his last album ‘Time of My Life’. It was an amazing experience that’s opened up a lot of doors for me. I signed a publishing deal with Concord Publishing and have since worked with artists and production houses all over the world. Emma, you play the piano on stage – is that an added challenge? One of the unique aspects of Once is that the music is played live by the actors. I’ve been playing the piano since I was seven years old and it’s always been a kind of outlet for me – so to combine the two is really special. There are so many different instruments in the show, especially for the swings who cover several parts, so the challenge comes with playing everything live. Daniel, are you excited to head out on tour? I’ve toured with the band but I’ve never toured with a theatre show before, I can’t wait! Emma, what’s your favourite part of the show to perform? I love ‘Falling Slowly’ because it’s the moment Guy and Girl connect with each other. I also love when the whole company perform ‘When Your Mind’s Made Up’ for the first time. Both scenes give me goosebumps every time! Why should people come and see it? E: Once really is the most relatable musical I have ever come across. When I did the show last year, so many of my friends and family came to watch – from my 80-year-old granny who loves crosswords and classical music to my 17-year-old brother who generally dislikes theatre and only listens to heavy metal... Everyone loved it. Once isn’t just a big emotional love story. It’s also hilarious. For a night out at the theatre it has everything you could ever ask for. Great music, laughter and a beautiful story that everyone can relate to. See page 12 for show dates and times.

TUESDAY 26TH – SATURDAY 30TH MAY

Once may be enough for you Once ATGnot 141x145 updated.indd 1 to see this multi awardwinning Broadway and West End hit musical. Based on the critically-acclaimed and much-loved film, you will meet two lost souls – a Dublin street busker and a Czech musician – who find each other unexpectedly and fall in love. You will fall in love too, with this brilliant musical, filled with live music, from lush ballads to barnstorming reels. Once is the spellbinding and uplifting story of hopes and dreams. Once has won awards across the world, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, eight Tony® Awards and an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music.

9 TO 5? More like 5, 6, 7, 8! With 9 to 5 The Musical movin’ and shakin’ its way into theatres, we decided to give our TheatreCard Members the chance to dance like Dolly at our latest exclusive event at The Palace Theatre, Manchester. The evening started with a toe-tappin’, hip-bumpin’ workshop led by the musical’s own dance captain, Sierra Brewerton. Members spent 45 minutes learning a dance from the show, with expert instruction and plenty of exciting choreography! Members who felt more comfortable in a cosy theatre seat than up on their feet were also able to enjoy the class. A mum who decided to spectate said: ‘I’m watching my daughter up on stage, she’s doing really well. It looks really good fun. As a parent, I’m really proud!’ After all that two-steppin’, complimentary refreshments were provided in the bar... in the form of a signature ‘Cup of Ambition’ cocktail of course! Members were able to kick back, relax and socialise before sitting down to enjoy the evening performance. Everyone had a fantastic time, both at the dance class and the musical itself. They loved being able to perform a routine from the actual show, which they watched back later – this time performed by the cast as part of the storyline. One Member sent us a lovely note afterwards, saying:

‘We very much appreciated all your help throughout the event; my daughter Taylor was in her element. We’d like to extend our best wishes to Sierra, who was brilliant throughout. Please also send a message to the cast of the show, who were tremendous. It was a great show – everyone was amazing – and we’ll be telling everyone to go and watch it!’ Not a Member yet? Simply sign up for TheatreCard Classic or TheatreCard Plus – you’ll enjoy a huge range of benefits, including ticket offers, fee-free booking, priority seats, access to exclusive content... and invitations to backstage experiences like this at your local theatre.

‘Thank you so much for the enjoyable pre-show entertainment. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. We were so looked after by all the staff involved in the workshop.’
