I’m Akarsha Koonal A present fifth-year undergraduate student at Wadiyar Centre for Architecture in Mysuru, India. In the past four years, I have tried to understand what architecture is, which I have not fully understood yet. I believe in the essence of the space than Physical Architecture.

STUDIO BRIEF & INTENT The studio looked at the aspects of designing a Urban Space in the City of Mysuru taking clues from the immediate Context and Surroundings.

Introduction | Mysuru Mysore geographically dates back by a millennium where it held the role of a humble agricultural patch while being handed down from dynasty to dynasty of the Dravidian empire.

But the city originated in its entirety under the Vijaynagar Empire (1495-1524). The current built history dates back to the 18th century under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan and the empire centered in Srirangapatna, and 19th-century development as the Princely state of British India.

Independence reached the state of Karnataka (then Mysore) six years late, in 1953 when the monarchy was dissolved.

Mysuru is located at the foothills of the Chamundi Hills about 145.2 km towards the south west of Bangalore and spread across an area of 286.05 km2. Mysuru City Corporation is responsible for the civic administration of the city, which is also the headquarters of the Mysuru district and the Mysuru division.

STUDIO BRIEF & INTENT The studio looked at the aspects of designing a Fashion Institute in the City of Mysuru taking clues from the immediate Context and Surroundings.

Mysuru is a city with stimulating experiences of both urban and rural milieu.

The idea is to design a campus involving all the activities together.

A central courtyard which is visible from all the floors acts as a main part of the campus.

The multi functional amphitheater in the courtyard can host small events.

The circulation inside the campus is designed in a way that interactions can happen at multiple interventions.

The program arises out of observing the existing condition of the built heritage that is undergoing slow decay. Ways of rejuvenating the place were deliberated upon. This included queries regarding how to keep the culture and the built heritage alive.

The program involves exploring ways of modulating scale to create a presence at the precinct level but an appropriate one at street level considering the proximity of the heritage buildings flanking the site it would also have room to look at the source of heritage and dwell in means of expressing it architecturally.

INTENT The basic idea was to provide a space for recreation for the senior citizens in the neighbourhood. Involving Cultural workshops such as dance and music to the main program to bring in younger generations also.

The playground next to the site that is attached to the school can be the place where the elder and children can meet.
